Riley, Christopher, and guest Morgan Aldous take you back to the true inner meaning of alchemy. That’s right, alchemy! If you are among those who think alchemy is just misguided proto-chemistry, you’re in for a big surprise! As Morgan put it, “While we tend to see alchemy as a primitive, mistaken form of chemistry that was redeemed by the Scientific Revolution, in reality, alchemy lost its sacred meaning and became mundane science.” While it’s true the Scientific Revolution took the exoteric (i.e., the outer) practices of the alchemists denuded from their esoteric (i.e, their inner) meaning and brought us many mundane conveniences we all take for granted today and seemingly couldn’t live without, we lost more than we gained in losing the esoteric meaning of those exoteric practices. For alchemists, the outer practices of alchemy were signs and symbols of deeper inner meanings. The gold the alchemists sought was not common gold. Morgan, Riley, and Christopher take you through both the esoteric and the exoteric meaning of alchemical practices from antiquity through the Renaissance and Reformation to the Restoration and current applications of alchemy, revealing lost inner meanings of the gospel’s ordinances from baptism and confirmation to the temple endowment and the marriage sealing. By elucidating the metaphoric language of alchemy, Morgan, Riley, and Christopher delve into alchemical symbolism not only in the above-mentioned ordinances along the covenant path, but in the story of the Brother of Jared in Book of Ether in particular, and in the Book of Mormon in general, and even in the person of the Savior himself, offering you the possibility a deeper, richer experience and understanding of gospel ordinances, the scriptures, and even the Savior Himself, as Morgan walks you step-by-step through an esoteric alchemical practice you can easily apply in your own spiritual practice to gain the benefit of alchemy in your personal relationship with the Savior in walking the covenant path back to your Father in Heaven. Walking the path to exaltation and eternal life is an alchemical practice. Understanding that elucidates and facilitates that path.

This week I am joined by my good friend, business partner, and fellow yogi, Morgan Rodriguez. Morgan and I walk down memory lane, recalling how we got into the yoga industry at a young age and how it impacted us as teachers moving forward. This interview is extremely informative and eye-opening, we go back to the roots of sacred words and practices. Morgan debunks the word “tribe” and its misuse in the yoga and spiritual community. Morgan speaks out about the trauma she experienced leaving a toxic studio space and how it has impacted her moving forward. We then dive into the art of witchcraft and what it means to be a witch. As Morgan speaks her truth in the episode, it inspired me to speak my own, and I hope it inspires you to do the same! The Album: James Brown: In the Jungle Groove (1986) This is the first of what will eventually be four episodes, released quarterly, that focus on the art of sampling. As Morgan explains in this episode, sampling isn't simply a key aesthetic within pop music styles, especially hip-hop, it's also an important way through which the past becomes present, allowing us to rediscover artists of yore. No artist in the 1980s benefitted more from this than James Brown. By the end of the decade, Brown's long funk discography had seemingly been mined thousands of ways over but if you had to trace things back to a ground zero, you'd find In the Jungle Groove, the 1986 compilation from Polydor that practically felt designed for sampling, especially by highlighting some of Brown's fiercest and funkiest tracks, complete with new edits and remixes, none more far-reaching than "Funky Drummer," a former 45-only jam that the comp not only released in its full form but also took Clyde Stubblefield's iconic breakbeat and looped it into its own standalone track.  For our inaugural Art of Sampling episode, we revisit In the Jungle Groove and talk about both our favorite songs off the comp as well as our favorite uses of those various tracks. Listen to how we give it up and turn it loose.   More on In the Jungle Groove Album reviews (Rolling Stone 500 and Pop Matters) Sampling database (WhoSampled) "The natural history of the 'Funky Drummer' break" Show Tracklisting (all songs from In the Jungle Groove unless indicated otherwise): Funky Drummer Digable Planets: Where I'm From N.W.A.: Fuck Tha Police Public Enemy: Fight the Power Funky Drummer Nas: Get Down The Incredible Bongo Band: Apache Nas: Made You Look Masta Ace Incorporated: Boom Bashin' George Michael: Waiting For That Day Skull Snaps: It's A New Day The Winstons: Amen Brother Public Enemy: Bring the Noise Funky Drummer Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose Talkin' Loud And Sayin' Nothing Keek and Qagee: Don't Say It, Sing It Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved Gang Starr: Gotch U CeCe Peniston: Finally (Remix) Full Force: Ain't My Type of Hype Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved Hot Pants I Got To Move Showbiz and AG: Diggin' In The Crates Cypress Hill: How I Can Just Kill A Man (Blunted Remix) Funky Drummer Here is the Spotify playlist of as many songs as we can find on there. Finally, after years of denying it, The Walking Dead creator has just announced the unthinkable. The Walking Dead will crossover with Fear the Walking Dead.   At The Walking Dead's panel at New York Comic Con, Robert Kirkman confirmed the news to fans.   "All joking aside, I'm really excited," Kirkman said. "I get that question all the time. I think that we've finally gotten to a place with Fear the Walking Dead where it has its own identify...there are two Walking Dead shows, I'm not going to name them, but there are two...There is one character that is going to go from one show that will go from one show and appear in the other show, that I will not name."   "Are we going to see a Walking Dead character's backstory play out in Fear the Walking Dead? Or are we going to see a Fear the Walking Dead character show up in The Walking Dead? What could happen? Or is it going to be different than that?"   In the three years since Fear the Walking Dead premiered, the creative team behind the zombie franchise has continued denying a potential crossover between the two shows. It's also been hard to envision a crossover for a while because Fear took has been a couple of years behind The Walking Dead in terms of story.   There's no telling, at this point, which show the crossover will take place in or which characters will go from one show to the other.   AMC CONFIRMS THE 'F-WORD' CAN NOW BE USED: During The Walking Dead press conference at New York Comic Con 2017, the cast and producers confirmed that indeed they will be able to use that particular profanity when season 8 arrives, with Negan actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan telling reporters, "Fuck yes! Fuckin’ fuck! It’s a year fuckin’ late! That’s was all I got on that. I’m real excited. I think we should’ve had that rule.”   Television as a whole (but especially network cable stations) have been pushing the boundaries of what is profanity, all along. On the one hand, The Walking Dead using "cuss words" isn't so outrageous, given all the violence and gore the show displays; however, it's equally true that it's a slippery slope, and once one show breaks that glass ceiling, other shows can take it too far.   For now however, those with more conservative opinions about vulgar language shouldn't be too worried. As Morgan later revealed, "You only get two in a year so we’re gonna be fighting for them.”  DC Universe:  The FINAL trailer for Justice League has arrived:           The trailer was nice  the effects are improved, the colors look amazing,  THE HYPE is real!   CONSTANTINE: officially announced to return to season 3 of
