The turn of the century was a significant period for the nu metal scene, with the genre building off the back of a string of breakout bands from the mid to late 90s onwards that saw the rap/metal hybrid style of music surge in popularity. Bands such as Korn, Limp Bizkit, System Of A Down and Linkin Park dominated headlines, but there was also an ever-growing list that included Sevendust, P.O.D, Drowning Pool and more that played just as big a role in the development of the genre. Two of those bands were hed (pe) and Nonpoint, both of whom released memorable albums in the height of nu metal's expansion. For hed (pe) it was their second album, Broke, and for Nonpoint it was their debut, Statement. Both albums elevated the respective bands' career trajectories, and that success led to numerous tours involving hed (pe) and Nonpoint that forged an unbreakable bond between the two bands that continues to this day. Both of those albums turned 25 this year, with both remaining as poignant and relevant today as they did upon release. So much so that both bands are uniting once more for a road trip from Hell, with Australia firmly in their sights early next year. Known for their legendary live performances and explosive tracks such as Bullet with a Name, What a Day, Ruthless, and more, Nonpoint has consistently captivated audiences with infectious riffs, compelling lyrics, and an uncompromising raw energy. Their discography and stagecraft have made them staples at rock radio and fixtures on festival line ups, earning them a dedicated international following. And now they have one more reason to celebrate, one more reason to tear up the stage, and one more reason to deliver Australian audiences a full-blown sonic assault rarely seen or heard on these shores. With anticipation for the February tour intensifying by the day, HEAVY accepted the offer to spend some time with Nonpoint frontman Elias Soriano to delve into the history of Nonpoint and what we can expect from their impending visit. One of the topics of discussion was the pairing of hed (pe) and Nonpoint on the same line-up and the sense of impending doom that has developed because of it."Yeah, those guys put on a great show," he smiled. "We're glad to team up with them again. The last run was really, really fun, so we're definitely going to be enjoying some good times on this one."The two bands have been touring and playing together since the turn of the century, and we asked Elias what his memories were of those early days and if the mentality of the earlier nu metal bands was more of an us-against-them feeling."At that time, everything was really moving in a big way," he recalled. "There were a lot of bands touring at that time. The big festivals and the touring festivals were really popular, especially with OzFest and Warped Tour and festivals like that. So being a part of that and being a part of the meld of hip-hop and rock that was happening at our time, that was an interesting culture that a different type of fan gravitated towards. So it's good to tour with bands like that, that share those types of fans and share that type of show."In the full interview, Elias talks more about the upcoming tour and what to expect, Nonpoint's first visit to Australia as part of Soundwave in 2010, the early days of nu metal and what it was like playing what was essentially a new cross-pollination of music to a non-existent fan base.He recalled his first reactions to hed (pe)'s album Broke and outlined similarities between that record and Nonpoint's release in the same year, Statement. Talk diverted to the early days of Nonpoint and the musical climate that gave birth to the band, the birth and sustainability of nu metal, new music and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

LJ talks about the new Sevendust album, his ghost encounter at the Rave, and what he's cooking up for Thanksgiving.
Cory Marks discusses his latest album, 'Sorry For Nothing Vol. 2,' his upcoming tour with Sevendust and more in this new interview.
Cory Marks doesn't fit into boxes, and he's not interested in starting now. The Canadian singer-songwriter has built a career on bridging the gap between country and rock, two genres that don't always play well together in the industry's carefully segmented landscape. But Marks isn't concerned with what should or shouldn't work. From touring with hard rock heavyweights like Theory of a Dead Man and Sevendust to ending his high-energy shows with just an acoustic guitar and raw vulnerability, he's carved out a unique space that honors his influences from Merle Haggard to Ozzy Osbourne. With the release of Sorry for Nothing, Volume Two, Marks continues to push sonic boundaries while staying true to his roots as a drummer-turned-songwriter. When he's not on stage or in Nashville's writing rooms, you might find him 10,000 feet in the air. Marks is also a licensed pilot who finds creative inspiration among the clouds. In this conversation, he opens up about the emotional power of acoustic performances, the challenges of Nashville's intense writing culture, his unforgettable experience flying with the Canadian Snowbirds, and why sometimes the best thing a songwriter can do is take a step back and just live.
Few bands in history have left such a lasting impression in music as Santa Barbara funk metal outfit Snot.Forming in 1995, Snot released just one album before having their career cut short by the tragic death of frontman Lynn Strait. Despite their short time as a band, such was the impression left by Lynn and Snot that after his death, a tribute album called Strait Up was recorded in his honour, featuring everyone from Slipknot to System Of A Down to Sevendust paying tribute to the man and his music.Snot's fusion of genres - before it was common to do so - stood them out from other bands of the era, with their blending of hardcore, punk, nu metal and funk combining for the masterpiece that was their debut album Get Some. The band have flirted with the idea of reigniting the flame with a new frontman several times since Lynn's passing, but until recently, and buoyed by the resurgence of nu metal, have failed to find that elusive spark that ignited three decades ago to create pure musical magic.Next January, for the first time in over a decade, Snot return to Australia for a run of shows with Soulfly and Nailbomb - including Froth & Fury Festival - with vocalist Andy Knapp (Stronger Than Machines) to introduce a new generation to the power of music. HEAVY spoke with bass player John Fahnestock to find out what to expect. We start by running over the three touring bands - Soulfly, Nailbomb and Snot - and reiterate the quality of music in one package."Soulfly and Nailbomb, right," John laughed. "They are good friends of ours. We have known each other for, God, going on 25 years or more. Mikey (Doling, founding member and guitarist) also played in Soulfly after Snot, after Lynn had passed. So, we're out on the road with family again. We played with Soulfly in Mexico City back in May and rekindled our friendship, and here we are coming to Australia now."We ask John about their new vocalist, Andy Knapp, and what they were looking for in a frontman after trialling two previous vocalists in Tommy Vext and Carl Bensley."I think the whole thing is a lot different now," he measured. "We are pretty much saying Snot is back at this point. We finally found in Andy what we basically were dreaming of having, and I'm not saying anything negative on the past singers that we had. Before, when we put Snot back together, it wasn't like 'we're reforming, we're back', anything like that. We were just more doing it for fun, for the love of music, the love of Jamie and Mikey and myself playing together. And we were like, let's go out and play the songs, you know? But it wasn't seriously saying we're back and coming back here to stay, like we are now. It's a blessing to have found Andy and what he's doing, and obviously, the response from the fans has been nothing but positive."In the full interview, John spoke more about the upcoming Australian shows, what has changed with the band in the decade since they were last here and what we can expect. He spoke more about welcoming Andy Knapp as frontman and what sorts of things Snot were looking for in their new vocalist. He told us about the first show with Knapp and how old time fans reacted, how Snot's music relates with modern audiences, and how their sound shaped a generation of bands. We talked about the early days of Snot and the musical climate that gave birth to the band, their initial sound and how they found the balance between genres, including how to know when or if they had gone too far in one direction or not far enough in another. We spoke about the impact of Snot's debut album, Get Some, and the band's initial feelings on the album, including Lynn Strait's early vision for Snot and his musical passion. John delved deeper into the tribute album Strait Up and the contributions of the many bands, new music the band have written and if that will translate into a full album and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Canadian musician Cory Marks has succeeded where many others have failed - or weren't even game enough to try - by managing to bring elements of rock and metal into his country-oriented music and, more importantly, make it accessible to all sides of the musical fence. It is a musical amalgamation that by every letter of the law should not work, but somehow Marks not only makes it work. He makes it breathe.Whether by design or by plain old-fashioned luck, Marks has made the transition even easier over the course of his career by enlisting the talents of some of hard rock and metal's biggest names with Sully Erna (Godsmack), Mick Mars (Motley Crue) and DL (Bad Wolves) providing notable guest appearances across Marks' three existing albums. By having these names attached to his music, Marks has managed to form a gateway between genres that has flowed through into his whole catalogue of music, to the point that on his latest album, Sorry For Nothing Volume 2, Marks dispenses with guest musicians and delivers 11 original songs of his own volition. And it still works.HEAVY caught up with Marks on the eve of the October 3 release of Sorry For Nothing Volume 2."It's crazy to think that this is my second album in less than a year," he smiled. "Volume 1 came out in December 2024, and this is all music that I love, and I'm very proud of and excited to finally have out into the world. I'm excited, and I think it's a perfect blend of country rock and hard rock."We ask if Volume 2 is a continuation of Volume 1 or if it is more of the same."I would say it's a continuation," he said after a moment's thought. "I think there's some really great country stuff on there. Again, it might be a biased opinion, of course, but there's some heavier stuff like what you've heard so far already, with songs like Hangman and Are You With Me?. And there's some different stuff on there, too, with a song like Someone I Hate, which you even hear some metal screams in there. I'm maybe channelling my Phil Anselmo or my Chester a little bit (laughs), which is different for me on the record and even that style of song."In the full interview, Cory talks more about the songs on Sorry For Nothing Volume 2, the singles released and how they represent the album as a whole, plus the reasons why he chose to put all of the songs with guest artists on Volume 1.He spoke about the blending of genres and how he makes them fit together on an album, as well as the moment when he first had the thought of blending country, metal and rock. Cory told a great story of how that idea became reality and set him off on the path he is on today. We spoke about his upcoming tour with Sevendust as well as the possibility of an Australian tour and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

This Week on America's Podcast: Coheed and Cambria Strap on your space helmets and tighten your prog-rock seatbelts, because this week on America's Podcast, we descend into the melodically twisted, comic book-fueled universe of Coheed and Cambria—specifically, their tongue-twisting opus Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness. (Yes, that's the full title—breathe now.) We wrangled in the ever-insightful Favio Vegas to help us untangle this prog-rock Rubik's Cube. Is this album a poetic masterpiece that'll make you grab your 10-speed bike and ride toward destiny? Or does it leave you staring into the void, waiting to be Welcomed Home by better decisions? No spoilers—but expect plenty of interdimensional confusion, some mild existential dread, and a whole lotta guitar wizardry. Tracks of the Week slap harder than a caffeine crash at 4AM: Marc goes full nocturnal with “4am T.M.” by Heavy Bones—because nothing says productivity like insomnia and power chords. Jerry walks the straight and sinister path with “Devils Row” by The Reality of Yourself—spooky, soulful, and possibly cursed. Favio chooses the narrative path with “The Story” by Envy of None—turns out even envy has layers. And Mooger closes it out in true Mooger fashion with “I Might Let the Devil Win” by Sevendust—because sometimes, evil just has the better riff. So until next week: grab that 4am TM, start writing your own prog saga, and if you find yourself on Devil's Row… maybe just walk really fast. #coheedandcambria
Clint Lowery, renowned guitarist and founding member of the hard rock band Sevendust, has recently experienced a profound spiritual transformation, embracing a renewed faith in Jesus Christ. Born on December 15, 1971, in Jacksonville, Florida, Lowery's musical journey has been marked by both critical acclaim and personal challenges. Despite a foundation in a Christian household—his grandfather was a Methodist preacher—Lowery's relationship with God was, for many years, distant and undefined. It wasn't until a significant health scare in 2024, involving unexplained neurological symptoms, that he fully surrendered his life to Christ. Lowery came to understand the true meaning of salvation and committed himself wholeheartedly to his faith. This spiritual awakening has deeply influenced Lowery's personal and professional life. He completed his first tour as a "saved Christian," describing it as the most profound and spiritual experience of his career. He noted a newfound freedom from resentment and judgment, attributing this transformation to his relationship with Christ.Lowery's journey from addiction and personal turmoil to spiritual renewal serves as a powerful testament to the transformative power of faith. His story offers hope and inspiration, illustrating how surrendering to God's grace can lead to profound personal change.

This potent collection contains twelve songs that clearly celebrate the band's strengths – strong anthems with blistering guitars and powerful vocals – while weaving classic rock roots with strands of modern melodic hard rock. Return To Dust embodies the sound of shedding the weight of the past while embracing the promise of tomorrow. The Los Angeles-based quartet—Matty Bielawski [guitar, vocals], Graham Stanush [bass, vocals], Sebastian Gonzalez [guitar], and London Hudson [drums]— brings a fresh perspective to alternative rock. Their music fuses powerful harmonies, fuzz-laden riffs, and seismic grooves, fueled by the raw energy of four Gen Z friends jamming in a garage. What may seem like a traditional approach on paper feels like an act of rebellion today, rippling towards a real turn of the tide. As the story goes, the band settled in Los Angeles to record with producer Jim Kaufman [Everclear, Danny Worsnop, Night Riots, Helmet]. 2024 saw them unveil their independent self-titled full-length debut, Return To Dust, featuring single “Belly Up” which surged online, organically gathering over 2 million Spotify streams. Distorted Sound hailed it as “a grungy, punky thrill ride,” while Revolver applauded the group's “Alice In Chains-inspired form of modern-day grunge.” In the aftermath, they lit up the stages at major festivals like Inkarceration, Welcome To Rockville, and Sonic Temple, while also joining rock legends Chevelle and Sevendust as support on their respective tours. Signing to LAVA Records/Republic Records with more music on the horizon, the group is poised to stand at the forefront of the next generation of rock music.

Myles Kennedy Interview | The Brett Allan Show | The Art of Letting Go Alterbridge and Slash As a prolific songwriter, powerhouse vocalist, and skilled guitar player, Myles Kennedy tunes into the rhythm of his surroundings and goes with the flow. Fronting Alter Bridge, his soaring vocals, open-hearted lyrics, and airtight riffs have fueled the group's global impact as a critically acclaimed, arena-filling force of nature over two decades-plus. On the microphone for Slash and The Conspirators, his towering range and magnetic stage presence has consistently stunned audiences since 2010. Becoming a celebrated collaborator, he's the rare presence just as comfortable on a track with Disturbed, Halestorm, and Sevendust as he is with Gov't Mule and Darryl “DMC” McDaniels. It's why he's generated over 1 billion cumulative streams, earned gold and platinum certifications worldwide, uplifted countless fans, and KERRANG! christened him “one of rock's finest vocalists.” It's also why he's carved out his own lane. With two solo efforts under his belt and sold-out headline tours in the rearview, a sense of keenly honed intuition guides his third full-length LP, The Art of Letting Go [Napalm Records]. “I've been going through a massive Bruce Lee kick, no pun intended,” he smiles. “His quote, ‘Be water, my friend', always stuck with me. On a grander scale, it represents the record. It's an exercise in removing prior restrictions and shattering the parameters I set up for myself as a solo artist. This is a rock record. In the past, I thought rock might be a little too close to the other projects. Instead, I just let go and embraced my essence as a singer, guitar player, and writer. This is who I am. This is my DNA. Instead of being apologetic and shying away from it, I'm letting go and being myself.” Connect with us on our website for more amazing conversations! www.brettallanshow.com Have you got some feedback? Is Nü Metal the most divisive music subgenre of the 1990s? It sure seems to generate a lot of hate, but is also beloved by millions of fans. Eschewing the traditions of classic NWOBHM bands (guitar solos, leather, fist-pumping athems), Nü Metal rose from the same underground that embraced both hip-hop and mosh pits, with its own style (baggy pants, tracksuits, baseball caps) more reminiscent of Run D.M.C. than Judas Priest. In the same way that punk was a response to the bloated stylings of 70s corporate and progressive rock, Nü Metal stripped away the overindulgence of previous metal incarnations and focused on rhythm and catharsis. Bands like Korn, Papa Roach, and Linkin Park wrote about the dark underbelly of suburban home life, with varying musical approaches, while others like Slipknot, Mudvayne, and Static-X added a layer of theatrical presentation in their looks. We revisit not just the Nü Metal period, but also what came before it, bands like Anthrax and Public Enemy teaming up, the alternative approaches of Primus, Faith No More, and Rage Against The Machine, and explore the looks, the sounds and legacy of Nü Metal.
