What the Riff?!?
1989 - December: Nine Inch Nails "Pretty Hate Machine"

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 30, 2023 42:08

The industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails is the creation of singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Trent Reznor.  While living in Cleveland in 1987, Reznor worked as an assistant engineer and janitor at Right Track Studios.  He had free access to the studio between bookings, and took inspiration from Prince to play all instruments himself to produce his material.  The name Nine Inch Nails comes from a quote by Al Jourgensen, lead singer of the metal band Ministry - "Listening to Ministry is like having a nine inch nail hammered into your head like a hole."  The debut studio album entitled Pretty Hate Machine was released by TVT Records in October 1989.  It has an industrial synth feel, with dark lyrics driven by angst, despair, and betrayal.  Unlike much of the industrial rock of the time, songs on Pretty Hate Machine feature catchy riffs and hooks, and the song structure employs a traditional verse and chorus approach rather than continually repeating electronics.  The result would prove to be both a commercial and critical success, reaching number 75 on the US album charts.Although Reznor produced and performed all the instrumentation on the album, he soon found himself in need of a touring band, particularly when he was brought in to open for Guns N' Roses on their European Tour.  Many musicians have been brought into the Nine Inch Nails over the years, but Reznor remained the only permanent member until his frequent collaborator, Atticus Ross, was brought in as a member in 2016.Lynch brings us this pioneering industrial rock album for this week's podcast. Head Like a HoleThe opening track to the album was the second and most commercially successful single, reaching number 28 on the US Alternative Airplay charts.   It also took inspiration from the quote from Al Jourgensen of Ministry.  The song is about the control that money has over people and the pain and suffering associated with it.  Terrible LieThis song reflects the anger and despair of a person going through a bad time in their life and blaming it on God.  "(Hey god) why are you doing this to me?  Am I not living up to what I'm supposed to be?  Why am I seething with this animosity?  (Hey god) I think you owe me a great big apology."SinWhen we give in to our darker impulses, perhaps driven by desire or betrayal, we can find ourselves in a spiral of self-destruction and sabotage.  The song is about the pain and destructiveness that can lurk below the surface.Down In ItThis is the debut single from the album.  During the making of the video, a camera attached to a weather balloon became detached and flew 200 miles away.  When found in a farmer's field the FBI was called in to investigate what appeared to be a gang or cult slaying of Reznor. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the motion picture "Christmas Vacation 3" The success of "Christmas Vacation" inspired a number of sequels. STAFF PICKS:Higher Ground by the Red Hot Chili PeppersRob's staff pick is  a cover of a song Stevie Wonder originally released in 1973.  While the original went to number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, the energetic remake by the Red Hot Chili Peppers also achieved commercial success, reaching number 26 on the US Mainstream Rock chart.  It was the first RHCP song to chart.Bad Love by Eric ClaptonBruce brings us the second single from Clapton's eleventh solo studio album.  This is a comeback album, as Clapton had recently become sober after dealing with alcoholism.  It hit number 16 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.  This song features Phil Collins on percussion and backing vocals.  and would be awarded the Grammy for Best male Rock Vocal Performance in 1990. Good Work by the BoDeansWayne features a rockabilly party song from a Wisconsin group.  The BoDeans have been called roots rock, heartland rock, and alternative, but their retro 50's sound and driving live performance makes them a great band to see.  They performed extensively with U2 on The Joshua Tree tour, and remain popular in the US Midwest. The Last Worthless Evening by Don HenleyLynch closes out the staff picks with a hit from Henley's album "The End of the Innocence" that went to number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.  The lyrics are a plea from an ex to just move on.   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Pacific 202 by 808 StateThis Manchester electronic music group takes its name from the Roland TR 808 drum machine.

We continue our Oscars ‘91 series this week with yet another dark movie about Hollywood. Though this version has a twist: it's the Coen brothers, and they're making things incredibly weird, as they're known to do. For a movie written about writer's block by two writers dealing with writer's block, it happens to be a fairly decent movie. It's just that the Coens hadn't struck that balance of digging up obscure references and making them instantly relatable. John Turturro and John Goodman give truly incredibly performances, but the Coens seem to have internalized the story a bit too much. John Singleton, right out of film school, created a narrative that was so authentic and poignant that it didn't matter how predictable the story arc was. The plot isn't complicated, the characters are relatively simple, but it's the reality of life in South Central LA that makes this movie so incredibly powerful. From 1986 to 1990, The Jack Rubies released a clutch of singles and two albums on TVT Records - 1988's comp Fascinatin' Vacation and 1990's See The Money In My Smile - balancing the band's indie pop hooks and penchant for "cowboy songs" that explored the darker side of life. In this episode, we bring you part 4 of "The Roots of the Demon," tracing the lineage and musical pedigree of each member through various precursor bands predating Night Demon. As the story resumes, Jarvis found an outlet for his love of horror-punk by joining Hybrid Moments, essentially a Misfits cover band with original songs, and gigging locally during downtime from No Motiv.  Meanwhile, Armand became heavily immersed in recording work following the split-up of From Satellite. One of the bands he recorded was Le Meu Le Purr, a quirky, experimental, indie noise rock band that signed to TVT Records.  After being cornered at the bar late one night, Armand agreed to join the band. Other members of Le Meu Le Purr eventually helped him build the recording studio now known as The Captains Quarters. At that time, Jarvis was feeling lost following the dissolution of No Motiv. He resolved never to be an expendable band member again, but always to lead from that moment forward. On a lark, Jarvis wrote and recorded a doo wop / rockabilly / roots rock song that led to him forming Jeff Hershey & The Heartbeats for what was intended to be a single one-off performance. Elsewhere, a talented new guitarist to the Ventura area named Brent Woodward was recruited to join a stoner-meets-hardcore outfit called The Fucking Wrath. The band, which also featured drummer John Crerar, evolved into a more metallic beast with the infusion of Brent's NWOBHM-inspired riffs and writing. Welcome to the Today is the Day Changemakers Podcast, episode 22, 'The Power of Music' with Jason Spiewak, Founder & CEO of JLS Artist Management & Noble Steed Music. JLS Artist Management: a full-service entertainment management company, built to represent a music-centric client base that is active worldwide.   Noble Steed Music: a record label with distribution through DashGo, as well as an artist services company offering world-class service to independent artists. In this episode Jason shares how he connected to music early on in his life. He started with piano lessons when he was just 11 years old.  Jason says, "music has given him everything". He also plays the drums. Jason moved forward and took the stage and the road playing in a band. After 5 years of playing in the band, he then moved on to be an assistant at a record label. You will hear more about this part of his journey. During this time he was then mentored by several who really helped him launch his career.  Jason learned the music business on the independent side of the record company world, with early work experience at Artemis Records, Studio E Records and TVT Records.    He was  co-founded the Warner Music distributed-label Rock Ridge Music in 2004, later to be named that company's President.  Under Jason's leadership, the label enjoyed the success of high-charting releases by Sister Hazel, Rachel Platten, Five.Bolt.Main, and a #1 jazz record by former baseball great Bernie Williams to name a few.He currently manages artists including: Constantine Maroulis, Toby Lightman, and many more that you can view on www.noblesteedmusic.com. The passing of Jason's Dad made him really look at things a bit differently. Jason says, "if there is something that has arisen in you, don't let that be fleeting. Act on the impulse. Too many of us get the signal, ignore it, and than the flare is gone". Jason shares that he is just Dad with his kids, but that the gold records he has are somewhat cool to them. Additionally, Jason donates his time to the Music Is Love Exchange, a charitable organization that leads groups of musicians and fans to Guatemala annually for week-long service trips. Listen in to hear how Jason became a Grammy voting member and his answer for the question, if you knew then what you know now, what would that be?Please subscribe on the Today is the Day Changemakers YouTube Channel and stream on all popular sites. Records. Prior to launching the AntiFragile Music label, Tom has run Esther Creative Group, where he's managed the careers of artists such as Lou Reed, Bryan Ferry/Roxy Music, Rickie Lee Jones, CAKE, Against Me!, Blonde Redhead, and many others. For the 11 years prior to starting ECG, Tom served as a Grammy-winning Senior A&R executive at various major labels including Universal Records, Arista Records, MCA Records, A&M Records, and TVT Records, working with the likes of The Roots, Nine Inch Nails, Erykah Badu, Blink-182, Annie Lennox, Mos Def, Imogen Heap, DJ Shadow, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, and so many others. Tom has also produced several feature films, having served as Film Producer for two acclaimed features, Red Shirley and Lou Reed’s “Berlin”, and as a Producer for MTV’s annual television special on his Shortlist Music Prize. AntiFragile Music was established as "a reaction against some of the established big labels who are not doing enough for artists anymore." On this Music Growth Talks episode, Tom Sarig explained how their approach to working with artists is different, mentioned how he discovers new talent, shared an interesting artist success story, and outlined terms of a typical AntiFragile's record deal. We also talked about the impact which placements in popular Apple and Spotify playlists have on the label, and how those placements alone never "break" an artist – it's the job of an artist's team to develop them, and turn passive listeners into fans.
