Jace joins Robert Kirkman and David Finch at the press room for Skinbreaker at SDCC 2025. This is a project that is over 7 years in the making. The success Robert has had with other long-term series such as Walking Dead and Invincible has allowed this project to unfold at a slower pace and give David the chance to take his time and put as much detail into the art as he wanted. Plenty of talk about the process, detail and collaboration as well as the decision to release the project as single issues rather than the initial over-sized one-shot originally planned. The creators were a bit cagey about details of the story, but only because they want the story to be discovered by the audience on its own.
Another San Diego Comic Con has come and gone, but have no fear! This is just the first of multiple episodes we'll be dropping over the next couple weeks to keep that sweet sweet SDCC dopamine rush coming! We sit down with Robert Kirkman and David Finch to discuss Skinbreaker, their upcoming series from Image and Skybound. In this roundtable we are joined by Hector Navarro (Heroes Reforged) and Jace Milam (The Comic Source), as well as a couple more outlets which I regrettably did not get information from to include them in this section. With that being said, we hope you enjoy this roundtable discussion with Robert Kirkman and Davis Finch! Special thanks to our friend Stephen who did an amazing job leveling the audio from this interview. Roundtables can make for some rough audio, but Stephen made this recording sound SO much better than the original. I just may, whaddya say? Comic-Con came and went this year, and maybe because the MCU and DCU were so muted, but there were still some good announcements. Xbox says game pass revenue is up, so is it profitable? Wolfenstein is heading to TV, and EA says no to $80. Air Bud is returning and I have serious questions, South Park takes time in its return, Star Trek goes all in on Comic Con, plus reviews of Happy Gilmore 2 and Fantastic Four!
Writer Robert Kirkman joins the show to talk about his wild ways in the direct market and work on comics like the upcoming Skinbreaker and Transformers. Kirkman discusses his feelings about San Diego Comic Con, a typical day for him, the Skybound side of things, his unconventional approach to the direct market, the impact of experimentation, paying attention to the market, creating vs. connecting, why the Energon Universe worked, building excitement, learnings from the Invincible show, the magic of comics, David Finch's work on Skinbreaker, how he built that series out, the unique collaboration on that book, his love of working with artists, creator-owned comics, the possessiveness of fans, taking over Transformers, how he's approaching it, 2025 in comics, the evolution of comics, and more.
SDCC 2025: Roundtable with Robert Kirkman & David Finch (San Diego Comic Con 26/07/2025) This weekend, the biggest pop culture celebration event returns to San Diego for four days of panels, exclusives, fandom and enthusiasm - San Diego Comic-Con! The Convention Collective's Senior Editor Dan Berry is very lucky to be on the ground as Press, taking in the sights and sounds. Here, he takes part in a roundtable interview, along with other invited press, to talk to writer Robert Kirkman (THE WALKING DEAD) and artist David Finch (ULTIMATE X-MEN) about a comic project years in the making: SKINBREAKER. Thanks to Comic-Con International for this amazing opportunity.
Rob Liefeld returns to the CBH podcast talking about Youngblood hitting its stride, Extreme Studios becomes a hothouse of new series: Brigade, Bloodstrike, and nearly two dozen more, all while he mentors rising talents Dan Fraga, Norm Rapmund and more. Mounting costs inside Image spark sharp discussions with Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, and Mark Silvestri, nudging Liefeld to open Maximum Press for experiments like Battlestar Galactica and Avengelyne. He talks about his exit from Image and his stint on Marvel's Heroes Reborn, where his Captain America made headlines amidst Marvel's bankruptcy. Recharged, he launches Awesome Comics, partners with Alan Moore for an Award‑winning Supreme, and joins Golden Age legend Joe Simon to shield Fighting American in court. A family walk through Greek ruins now feeds the mythic spark in Cable, Deadpool, and their Fortnite cameos. Royalties still arrive, proof that owning your stories keeps the dream alive, which is a lesson his friend Robert Kirkman echoes with Walking Dead and Invincible. #RobLiefeld #Youngblood #ExtremeStudios #ImageComics #CreatorRights #HeroesReborn #CaptainAmerica #MaximumPress #AlanMoore #Deadpool Support the show

Episode Summary:This week, Peter and Eden dive headfirst into the high-octane world of Daniel Warren Johnson's Transformers comic run, exploring its explosive art, emotional beats, and G1 nostalgia. Along the way, they unpack the pains of modern TV consumption, vent about doomed adaptations, and gush over goth rock albums and short-form sci-fi. It's a heartfelt mix of media love, mild despair, and giant robots punching each other in the face—with feeling.Show Notes:Peter kicks things off with a July 4th check-in and a quick rundown of what he's been reading and listening to, including Atomic Habits and the debut album by High Parasite, a side project involving My Dying Bride's Aaron Stainthorpe.Murderbot adaptation on Apple TV+ gets a thoughtful breakdown: Peter shares his appreciation for its tone, visuals, and how closely it mirrors Martha Wells' novella All Systems Red, especially its deadpan view of humanity and delightful Sanctuary Moon cutaways.Discussion veers into TV trust issues—how shows like Paper Girls and Wheel of Time were abandoned too early by streamers like Amazon and Netflix, and why Apple TV+'s longer-term faith in its properties (Slow Horses) earns praise.Eden questions the fractured nature of modern TV popularity, riffing on Yellowstone's massive reach despite their total ignorance of anyone watching it.A segment on Eden's short-lived journey into the glitchy, chaotic world of gacha game Re Memento: White Shadow, complete with mistranslations and catastrophic layoffs.Peter shares exciting news about planning a trip to Japan for his 27th wedding anniversary—and the hurdles of learning Japanese through Duolingo. For our main topic, we dive into the first arc of Daniel Warren Johnson's Transformers comic:Eden provides background on the series and its creative team, praising Johnson's gritty, wrestling-inspired action sequences and nuanced character work.Peter offers perspective as a lifelong fan reconnecting with the property, reflecting on the emotional impact of Optimus Prime, especially how the comic echoes the trauma of Transformers: The Movie (1986).Highlights include gruesome Starscream moments, human character development (especially Sparky's sacrifice), and Optimus wielding Megatron's blaster arm. Both hosts discuss the comic's balance between fresh storytelling and homage to classic G1 design and lore.Closing thoughts touch on the excitement (and dread) around Robert Kirkman taking over the series soon, and how this arc was a rewarding, if nostalgia-heavy, entry point for fans old and new.

What part of his history were you most excited to dig into, and what makes your take on the Goblin stand out?Norman's been a villain, a businessman, a politician, and sometimes even a twisted version of a hero. How do you approach writing a character who's constantly shifting between personas?Your Godzilla: Escape the Deadzone series introduces a walled-off wasteland, kaiju lore, and the myth of a half-man, half-kaiju survivor. How did you approach building suspense and worldbuilding in this isolated, almost post-apocalyptic setting?Writing Godzilla means balancing spectacle with humanity. What's your approach to telling grounded stories in the shadow of kaiju-level destruction? Now onto Blink and You'll Miss It — the tone and premise feel so personal and unique. How did this story come together, and what inspired you to tell a love story with a sci-fi twist? There's a big emotional core in Blink and You'll Miss It, but also some wild time-manipulation ideas. How did you balance the heart with the high-concept hook? You're juggling three very different projects — a Marvel villain origin, a giant monster epic, and a bittersweet romantic mini. How do you shift your mindset between such wildly different tones and genres? All three books deal with identity in some form — Norman's fractured psyche, a couple navigating time, and characters caught between humanity and monsters. Is that a theme you're consciously exploring across your work, or something that just naturally emerges?Fun one to wrap things up: If the Green Goblin got his own kaiju-sized glider and showed up in the Godzilla universe… how long would he last, and which monster would absolutely wreck him first?

What drew you to the exquisite corpse method as a structural framework—and how did it shape your writing process across collaborators?2. You've said before that horror lets you explore personal fears in metaphorical ways—what fear sits at the heart of Exquisite Corpses for you personally?3. This project is filled with shifting tones and visual voices—how did you maintain thematic cohesion across multiple artists and chapters?4. You've tackled horror through multiple lenses—from psychological horror in The Nice House on the Lake to body horror in Something is Killing the Children. Where does Exquisite Corpses fall on your personal horror spectrum?5. You've spoken about burnout and choosing joy in your writing—did this collaborative process reawaken anything in you creatively?6. There's a class warfare element baked into the DNA of Exquisite Corpses. How important was it for you to make that commentary explicit rather than just subtext?7. You're known for big ideas in genre fiction. Was there ever a version of Exquisite Corpses that could've been a prose project or TV pitch—or was comics always the only way this could work?8. What's one element in Exquisite Corpses—a character, twist, or scene—that you're most excited for readers to finally experience, but can't say anything about yet?

With the Invincible animated series propelling more and more fans to the comic books, now is the perfect time for Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley to reteam on a new series. In a universe populated with numerous rich, wild characters, they could have revamped an infinite number of ideas. They chose Battle Beast, the white lion-like humanoid cursed with an unquenchable rage, and in doing so, Kirkmann and Ottley create an opportunity to reframe the character's original narrative. Battle Beast first appeared in Invincible #19 (2004) and did not return until Invincible #55 (2008). Between those comics is a massive swath of time, and the new series, Invincible Universe: Battle Beast, will explore it fully. The first issue arrives in comic shops next Wednesday. If it's any indication, when this series is over, it will radically alter our understanding of Battle Beast's narrative and its place within the larger Invincible storyline. This week, we trap Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley in our Zoom room. We examine how this first issue challenges our previous interpretation of the title character, the pain at Battle Beast's core, and the brilliant action that erupts from it. Having built a utopia on his homeworld through violent combat, Battle Beast seeks an end through a worthy opponent.
