The Energon Universe isn't slowing down. At San Diego Comic-Con 2026, The Comic Source went inside the Skybound press room for an extended conversation with Robert Kirkman, Void Rivals artist Conor Hughes and Skybound publisher Sean Mackiewicz about the past, present and future of the interconnected universe. Kirkman discusses rebuilding ROM for a new continuity, including the research he did into the character's Marvel history and why he worried ROM's damaged appearance could be interpreted the wrong way. Hughes explains why that damage represents sacrifice and "scars of war," while Mackiewicz details how ROM and M.A.S.K. became part of Skybound's larger Energon plans. The conversations also reveal that Matt Trakker was included in Skybound's original pitch to Hasbro and was once intended to appear in Duke before Clutch ultimately filled that role. Mackiewicz and Kirkman both tease major developments beginning in M.A.S.K. #3, while Kirkman discusses the Energon Universe animated project currently in development and his hope that the comics may eventually reach their own version of the story represented by 1986's The Transformers: The Movie. And when asked whether there's a limit to how far the Energon Universe can expand, Mackiewicz's answer is simple: "no limits."   00:00 – Kirkman Teases the Energon Universe's Transformers: The Movie 00:12 – Sean Mackiewicz on M.A.S.K., ROM & Expanding Energon 02:40 – How ROM & M.A.S.K. Robert Kirkman is building an expansive new superhero universe with Terminal, and at San Diego Comic-Con Jace from The Comic Source sat down in the press room with Kirkman, Andy Kubert, Arthur Adams and David Finch to talk about what makes the series different. Kirkman discusses the influence of '90s X-Men and the desire to bring that same bold, in-your-face energy back to superhero comics, while creating two opposing factions where readers may not immediately know who the heroes and villains actually are. The conversation explores Kirkman and Joe Casey's long-term plans for a story designed to dramatically evolve by issues #12, #25 and even #50, Arthur Adams returning to interior work, David Finch tackling a different visual world after Skinbreaker, and Andy Kubert balancing the energy of his classic X-Men work with everything he has learned since. Kirkman also explains why Terminal may be his most collaborative individual comic yet, with Kubert, Adams and Finch contributing character designs, influencing one another's work and being given the freedom to change pacing, layouts and even expand moments from the script when they see a better visual solution. Plus, Kirkman addresses comparisons to The Walking Dead, why he wants Terminal to become its own thing rather than "the next" anything, and why making the best comic possible will always come before thinking about potential film, television or animation adaptations. One of the biggest comics announcements of San Diego Comic-Con was the reveal that Matthew Rosenberg will become the next ongoing writer of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and this week he's here for his first in-depth interview about the series. Rosenberg opens up about initially turning down the job before IDW came calling a second time, why his run is inspired by the raw energy of the original Mirage comics, and how he plans to put the turtles through a relentless fight across New York City. We also discuss his love of Eastman and Laird's work, collaborating with artist Juann Cabal, bringing forgotten characters back into the spotlight, and why this story will embrace every corner of TMNT history while carving out its own identity. Those are some massive touchstones. What qualities from those stories became your creative north star for this new era of TMNT? Your story begins immediately after Gene Luen Yang's "The City That Never Dies" storyline, which sounds like it leaves the city fundamentally changed. How did Gene Luen Yang's finale create opportunities that wouldn't have existed otherwise? One of the biggest hooks is that the Turtles are being hunted over the course of a single night. What made that compressed timeline appealing, and how does it change the pacing compared to a more traditional TMNT story? You said the team hunting the Turtles is assembled specifically for this mission. Without spoiling who's involved, what makes this group uniquely equipped to challenge all four brothers at once? 10:59 Juann Cabal has shown he can handle kinetic action and expressive character work across Marvel and DC. What is it about his storytelling you're excited to see in TMNT?  You've mentioned your love for Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird's Mirage Studios era. Were there specific themes or storytelling techniques from those early comics that you wanted to bring back for modern readers? Your comics often balance brutal action with sharp humor and strong character voices. How do you approach writing the Turtles so each brother feels distinct, especially when they're under constant pressure? You've written everything from street-level crime stories to huge superhero events. Where does TMNT fit creatively for you, and does it scratch a different storytelling itch than books like What's the Furthest Place From Here? or your Marvel work? You're taking over with issue #25, which already feels like a milestone. Looking ahead, what do you hope readers say about your TMNT run after they've finished that first story arc? Terminal throws readers right into a chaotic, violent world. When you were building the first issue, how did you approach onboarding readers without giving too much away? The book opens with some striking and surreal imagery, especially the eye and the idea of Maculox. What was the origin of that concept, and how central is it to the larger mythology? There's a clear tension between evolution and destruction running through the story. How did you want to frame that conflict without falling into a simple good versus evil dynamic? The first issue makes some bold narrative choices in terms of expectations around who the story might follow. Without getting into spoilers, should readers expect that kind of unpredictability to be a core part of the series? Robert and Joe, how does your collaboration work on a project like this? Are you breaking story together, dividing scripts, or building off each other's strengths in a specific way? Andy, the character designs, especially on the more villainous side, feel really eclectic and distinct. What were your inspirations when developing the look of this world and its characters? There's a bit of a “hidden world” structure here, where a regular person is pulled into something much bigger. What drew you to that kind of setup, and how do you keep it feeling fresh? The series feels like it has big, long-term potential, but also a very focused central idea. Is the plan for Terminal to be a long-running series, or are you working toward a more defined endpoint? For all three of you, what was the moment in developing Terminal where you realized this was something special or different from other superhero books you've worked on or read?

In this first half of a two‑part deep dive, Tony revisits the explosive beginnings of Invincible, the groundbreaking adult animated superhero series created by Robert Kirkman for Amazon Prime Video. Based on the Image Comics series he co‑created with Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley, Invincible redefined what superhero storytelling could be—violent, vulnerable, and unafraid to interrogate legacy, identity, and the cost of power. This episode brings together three of the creative forces who shaped the show's emotional core: Steven Yeun (Mark Grayson / Invincible), J.K. Simmons (Nolan Grayson / Omni‑Man), and Robert Kirkman (Creator / Executive Producer). Steven Yeun reflects on what drew him to Mark: a teenager caught between expectation and self‑discovery.  J.K. Simmons dives into the layered psychology of Nolan Grayson, On What initially attracted him to the role Robert Kirkman breaks down the creative decisions on crafting heroes who feel distinct from their comic‑book counterparts SAVE 17% ON PLUS TO GET THIS EPISODE COMMERICIAL FREE

Play NowEpisode 397 of the Seibertron.com Twincast / Podcast begins with the cast providing impressions and their preordering decisions for recent listings including the Collaborative FIFA Optimus Prime, an awkwardly timed patriotic Star Eagle, and the collector-centric Monstructor boxed set. Prompted by the dramatic story events within, a lengthy discussion occurs about Skybound's 30th issue of their Transformers comic book series, leading to criticism about its execution and pacing in the midst of praise for Robert Kirkman's willingness to try something new. This leads to a listener question about the brand's pivot into focusing on its legacy, with the cast providing potentially unpopular suggestions for how to re-boot the franchise in radical new directions. Listener questions about Overgear and triple-changers round the topics out before the episode concludes with the recurring "Bragging Rights" segment.

It's been a month or 2 since we last record, but we're back with technical issues.  We catch up, then talk about Robert Kirkman, the Academy Awards, and Guillermo Del Toro.  We attempt to do a little homework, but the recording abruptly cut off; we did talk Sorry Baby, The Baltimorons, The Rip, Fly Me To The Moon, and Twinless before we lost the audio. The beer for the episode was Evil Twin Brewing's Even More Irish Jesus. The featured track is "Attention Span" by the Dollyrots; you can find them:  Website | Facebook | Twitter/X | Instagram Check us out at our website and on social media.  Don't forget to rate and review the podcast on iTunes or wherever you listen to your podcasts.
