In this Episode of Crue Cast, a podcast is all about the most infamous band in rock history Motley Crue! I, Jason the resident CrueHead share a snippet from an interview I did with Morgan Rose of Sevendust on the time he filled in for Tommy Lee during Cruefest 2. SEVENDUST drummer Morgan Rose filled in for Tommy Lee at MÖTLEY CRÜE's last three shows of Cruefest 2 in 2009. On August 14 at the Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati, Ohio; August 15 at Clarkston, Michigan's DTE Energy Music Theatre; and August 16 at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's Post-Gazette Pavilion. Lee was off his kit for several Crüe Fest 2 shows after burning his left hand while playing with a set of sparklers. "Rose came charging in like a knight in shining armor" according to a note on bassist Nikki Sixx's MySpace page. Lee, who had his left thumb and forefinger wrapped in bandages, still took part in the shows, coming on first to explain his absence — "First of all, I suck. I was having fun and I burned myself," he told crowds at the various concerts— then handed a bottle of Jagermeister to the crowd and, during the encores, he played piano on "Home Sweet Home" and thumped on a drum with his right hand for "Girls, Girls, Girls", according to Billboard.com. The last time Lee was forced to sit out a MÖTLEY CRÜE gig was June 12, 2007 when he was he recovering from another arm ailment. EVANESCENCE/DARK NEW DAY drummer Will Hunt filled in for Lee at that show, although Tommy did manage to take to the kit for one number — the immortal "Kickstart My Heart". A Sympathetic Antipathy is the culmination of a few years of musical collaboration. The project was produced & co-written by Morgan Rose along with Leonard Cerzosie Jr., Corey Lowery, and Jim Taylor. In its various stages of recording, engineering talents include Jose Urquiza, James "Fluff" Harley, and Mike Ferretti. The initial inspiration for the EP was the passing of Lenny's mother after years of battling ALS. Tracks like "Miracle" were written about that struggle. Rose & Cerzosie have a history of writing & recording together and included a remastered version of a song they wrote with The Infinite Staircase in 2013 called "No Amends". Other musicians featured on the EP include Chris Caffrey of Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Justin Taylor of Alborn. Lenne has plans to play in support of their new EP throughout 2022. The current band line up consists of heavy hitting, Maryland musicians Mike Slaski, Rob Landon, and Stephen Hybdzinski; alongside Evan Crider ,Taylor from PA and Cerzosie from NY. Electric artists have been playing acoustically since the beginning of recorded music. Usually, the slower ballads and the prettier mellow songs by rock artists were accompanied by acoustic guitars. This week we are celebrating bands that can re-imagine an up-tempo song with acoustic instruments and still rock! We are pulling the plug… and gasping for air guitars! What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we discuss the FORGOTTEN. Mtv started a series in 1989 called “unplugged”, and almost every mainstream relevant act started producing acoustic albums or versions of their songs. This week we listen to some artists that you may have never considered as having acoustic interpretations of their songs.Songs this week include:Sevendust – “Seasons” from Southside Double-Wide Acoustic Live (2004)Thundermother – “Dogs From Hell (acoustic)” from Heat Wave Deluxe Addition (2021)Diamond Head – “Lightning To The Nations” from Acoustic First Cuts EP (2002) Los Kung-Fu Monkeys – “Common Chord (acoustic)” from Common Chord (2020)Clutch – “Basket Of Eggs (acoustic)” from Blast Tyrant Deluxe Addition (2011)Haunt – “On The Stage” from Unplugged Vol. 1 (2021)Suicidal Tendencies – “Get Your Right On! Red talks to Sevendust drummer Morgan Rose about their new release "Blood & Stone".
Morgan Rose is better known as drummer and founding member of Atlanta metal monster Sevendust. As well as banging the skins with Sevendust, he also provides harsh and clean back up vocals that are an essential part of the bands sound but until recently his solo outings have consistently revolved around his drumming expertise.Last month - and surprisingly to most of the metal community - Rose dropped his first solo album Controlled Chaos, taking vocal duties as well writing and producing. The resulting EP showcases a musical side of Rose that many did not know existed to the extent it does, but also successfully separates this project as a stand-alone project rather than Sevendust with a different singer."It's been crazy," Rose enthused on the EP's reception, "way more than I thought it was gonna be. It was really more kinda like a little project, like a hobby, but there's really nothing going on right now so what better time to do something that I've been thinking about doing for a while. Me and Clint got together and put together some songs and I was able to put some pretty heavy vocals on them, some vulnerable lyrics, and I guess some of those words hit home. In the climate - especially over here right now - I think that some of them caught people so it's been received really well."While Controlled Chaos blindsided all but his most dedicated followers, Rose admits that it is an idea that had been festering for some time, albeit a seldomly discussed one."I had talked about it," he measured, "but it was really more me and Clint talking about it. He said, dude, you really need to do a solo record and it's constant Sevendust. Sevendust is just a constant train, so he ended up doing a solo record and I really wanted a break. I'd been sick last year in December - almost a year to the day, tomorrow will be a year since I was put in the hospital - so I wanted the break." In the full interview Morgan goes into the five songs on the EP a little deeper, writing separately with Sevendust guitarist Clint Lowery, the importance of making the music distinctly separate from Sevendust material, things he learnt about himself musically making the EP, the potential for more solo material and more.
Sevendust resident stick wielder Morgan Rose has a new solo record and no one seems more surprised than him. Listen in as he explains to Ozz how "Controlled Chaos" came to life See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Together with American Songwriter we had the pleasure of interviewing SAUL over Zoom video! They turn the tables, defy expectations, and emerge victorious. The rise of SAUL resembles a classic underdog story. The band quietly clawed their way out of the Midwest and into the national limelight with six million-plus streams and the endorsement of tastemakers such as Revolver, Guitar World, Loudwire, and many more. The Iowa quartet - brothers Blake Bedsaul [lead vocals] and Zach Bedsaul [lead guitar, backup vocals], William McIlravy [bass, backup vocals], and Myles Clayborne [drums] - embody this timeless tale on their 2020 full-length debut, Rise As Equals [Spinefarm Records].“Our approach was to completely come out swinging,” exclaims Blake. “That was our main goal. We wrote each song like it was the last song we were going to write. We focused on lyrical content that would mean something to everybody who heard it. We harnessed this positive energy out of real-life experiences.”As the story goes, SAUL steadily grinded it out since 2017. In between sharing stages with the likes of Bush, Fuel, 10 Years, HELLYEAH, and Nonpoint, the musicians sharpened a signature style. Sonically, the boys struck an elusive balance between jackhammering polyrhythmic guitars and sweeping melodies. During 2019, the four-piece independently launched “Brother” (dedicated to their late brother Caleb) to #1 on Sirius/XM Octane as it took over radio across the country. Within a year, it eclipsed 3.7 million Spotify streams and 1.3 million YouTube views. The group continued their momentum with the band's Aeons EP as “Trial By Fire” surpassed 870K Spotify streams and 190K YouTube views. Along the way, the musicians pieced together what would become Rise As Equals - only to endure tragedy once more.“Our mom was battling cancer at the time,” says Blake. “She passed away last year. We were struggling in the studio while she was at home and our dad was trying to take care of her and work full-time. It was tough, for sure.”However, SAUL made it through. In addition to “Brother” and “Trial By Fire,” they will unleash “King Of Misery” as the lead radio single from their new album. The musicians co-wrote the track with Disturbed frontman and rock legend David Draiman over Zoom while in quarantine.A chugging riff snaps into clean verses before a hypnotic and hard-hitting hook. “The song is reflective of our dad when our mom was in hospice,” he goes on. “He always joked, ‘I’m the king of everything. This is my domain’. At that point, he was the king of his domain, but he was also the king of misery at the same time. I’ve been listening to Disturbed since middle school. When David said he was a fan of our band, it was totally mind-blowing. It was a dream come true and a blessing to work with him.”The boys also teamed up with powerhouse songwriter Erik Ron [Godsmack, Issues, Sylar] on “Here And Now.” Once again, detuned thrashing gives way to magnetic melodies “about rebuilding what we thought we were and starting over fresh.” Sevendust drummer Morgan Rose hopped behind the throne for the syncopated shockwaves of “Inside,” while “Looking To Fight” sounds a call-to-arms.“When times were down and we weren’t doing music, it was about my inner struggle being bitter at myself and my life,” Blake states. “It’s really personal. Zach and I agreed this would be our last hurrah if ‘Brother’ didn’t hit. Thankfully, it did.”Meanwhile, the title track transmits a message directly to the group’s legion of fans affectionately referred to as “Equals.” Glistening electronics and keys pierce through thudding grooves as Blake screams, “This is my time, these are my people, standing with pride, you are my equals.” “It’s a mantra for the crowd,” he smiles. “It’s such a good feeling. We wrote it specifically for our fans. We all fight together. We’re all equals.”In the end, SAUL stand for and with those equals forever. “Not only is this band a family, but all of our fans are a part of that family,” he leaves off. “We don’t stray away from that. When things get tough, stay positive, keep fighting, and do what’s right. We’ll never stop.”We want to hear from you! New booking agent for 3 Years Hollow. New music coming in April. New project with Morgan Rose from Sevendust. Plenty of projects with The Attic in Geneseo. Jose Urquiza talks production and I geek out a bit about studio stuff. A ton of cool things happening with Jose. I'm glad he came in!
"It was only Morgan (Rose, drums) and John (Connoly, guitar)... there wasn't a band yet", recalled Sevendust vocalist Lajon Witherspoon of his first introduction to what were to become his bandmates for the next 25 years. "They came to a bar I was working at - and this is a true story - and it was Morgan, John and Vinnie (Vince Hornsby, bass) and John had never played guitar, he was a drummer, he never even had a guitar strap! (laughs) They said man, we really love what you do and I used to always go and see those guys jam - except for John, he was in Piece Dogs and played drums for them. They were signed to Energy Records so I was already impressed with him, he was a signed artist already, but he never played guitar so that was a little bit weird (laughs). It was great and Vinnie and Morgan were in the band Snake Nation and they almost got signed by RCA records but the A & R guys signed Dave Matthews instead - which I think was a great move for him (laughs). So these guys showed up in a spot I was working at and I was playing on a Monday night in a little band I had and they said they'd really like to get together and to come down to the rehearsal place but it wasn't a band. It was just us jamming and that's what started it. That's what started the seed of Sevendust right there, in that room and we wrote 'Black' and we wrote a song called 'Crazy' and we were so excited about this little band that we had that we went out to a local bar and we just jammed and everyone showed up because they knew us from previous bands and we only played those two songs and they asked us to get up there again so we played the same two again (laughs). We rocked it, man, so it was like, we have to put a band together and that's what we did; that's where it started".Rising from the Atlanta music scene in 1994, Sevendust garnered their reputation the old fashioned way through relentless touring and taking their music to the masses. So much so that Witherspoon jokes that fans in their hometown weren't sure whether or not the band had fulfilled their dream or merely faded into the shadows of many others that had followed the same path."We were just on the scene in Atlanta", he laughed. "That was the only place we ever played and then we got a record deal and I remember leaving from the Midtown Music Festival and we never went back to Atlanta for a year or two because we were on the road. It was like we got thrown from our home scene to the world. It was like wow, we've left Atlanta and never went back. I don't think they ever realised what we were doing out there on the road because we'd been gone so long (laughs). We'd really been working and paying dues - and we still are - but we went out there in a van and toured the world and went from a van to several vans to several R.V's! One time I remember the bus pulling up and we all said wow, all our rock and roll dreams have come true but in reality, the nightmare had just begun. We didn't know that yet but (laughs). It's been an incredible journey. We started in Atlanta with bands like Sunk Mojo, and The Black Crowes were coming out of there but we weren't really that big yet. We were growing. We knew that we had a good thing going on and once we hit the road it kind of hit man and we just never stopped"!Sevendust released their self-titled debut in 1997 and while it is widely respected now hardly set the music world on fire then, selling poorly in its first week. Rather than let that dampen the young band's spirits, Witherspoon says that the members were largely oblivious to the fact it had failed to ignite."No way, no way"! he reiterated when pressed if it was an issue. "Not for me. I was 21 years old, I had a record deal, we didn't care about the numbers. I don't even... not even today. It's still just an honour to be relevant in the music business when it's so crazy and you can be here one minute and then you're gone so for me it's that same feeling of I'm still here, you know? I really didn't look at the numbers back then. I don't care about them. I just felt wow, we're signed, we're touring the world and going to places we've never been before and people were singing our songs back to us! We were on Ozzfest all of a sudden with Ozzy and Lemmy from Motorhead was my buddy. That was what I was thinking about back then and getting back in the studio and making another album. Back then we didn't care about what was going on in the business, we just cared about the art".In 2004 Sevendust put out what was at the time a groundbreaking release from a metal band. They recorded and packaged a live DVD/CD set named Southside Double Wide: Acoustic Live from a show recorded at the Georgia Theatre in Athens. It was ambitious, innovative, and risky, showcasing a softer side to the band and their music that ran the risk of alienating their diehard metal fans. It was a sign of a band at the peak of their powers, unafraid to bare their musical soul, and was to become a worldwide hit with both hardcore fans and those seeking something a little fresh and adventurous."That's something we come back to from time to time", Witherspoon shrugged. "A lot of the time a song starts with an acoustic guitar when jamming and it was really cool to show people we could be under the microscope and jam and still bring the same energy to the acoustic set that we bring to the live set. That was something that we captured then and something we capture now whenever we break out the acoustic. We did another acoustic album years later, but it's something that we feel is important. Especially for me, because doing this allows me to showcase more of my vocal ability and to sing more and not necessarily sing over the guitars and the loudness. It brings it down. We're still doing a heavy song but you can hear it (laughs)".That same year original guitarist and backing vocalist Clint Lowery left the band to play with his brother Corey in Dark New Day. Although the split was amicable and Lowery was to return four years later, Witherspoon admits that musically the adjustment was difficult."That was a weird period for us", he reflected, "because that's our brother and for me, I loved writing with Clint but for us, I think... we continued. It was something that made us work harder and we had our brother Sonny Mayo from Snot there for a while and it was a great opportunity for us all and for him too and it was a pleasure to play with him but like anything I think when you leave home sometimes you've gotta come back and I felt that was what happened. When Clint came back to the band for me it was the missing link that we needed back, even though we didn't stop. For me, this band is the original band. The guys that started it and are still here. There's a certain air about it when we're all together in a room writing music that is like no other".One of the strengths of Sevendust, particularly in the live arena, is the passion and emotion exuded by their enigmatic frontman. Witherspoon not only gives voice to the songs that have nurtured Sevendust, but he also feels them. It is not uncommon for him to be seen on the brink of tears during their performance, unashamed to let the essence of the music shine through in his actions."Oh man, it gets emotional just thinking about it when you ask me the question", he managed, obviously choking up at the thought. "It's my serenity. When I'm on stage it's a place where I go and feel from the soul. I feel the energy from the people and I get emotional because I can look out and there can be one person in the crowd that is looking at me and I can see the effect and what's going on and maybe it's even something going on in their lives. You can feel that pain or that energy. It goes both ways, any time. You never know what can spark emotions and it's a rollercoaster ride of happy, sad, exciting - it's every emotion that you can possibly feel and fit in your body on that stage for me and I love it every time I go on it".Sevendust return to Australia this April on the back of last years album All I See Is War, an album which many critics believe harks back in sound to the early days of the band."It's crazy", Witherspoon enthused, "because the first thing the producer said when he came in was listen, you guys don't need any help so let me know if I can do anything and it was just like he was policing things. He said I want you guys to just be Sevendust. Let's go back to the old sound. Let's not get crazy and that's what we were able to do with him. I guess with any artist you want to grow and expand but it wasn't hard for us just to be Sevendust and I think we were able to - not on all of the tracks - but on some of the songs we got that old feel back and it was really cool to do that". It is not uncommon for fans - especially those from the beginning - to demand each new album has some sort of throwback to earlier releases, but Witherspoon agrees that what gets lost in the cries is the fact that it is not quite so easy to replicate a period and feel that was captured in a time when innocence was the best virtue of their chosen artist."It's not easy at all", he shook his head. "You want to evolve and you want things to... especially as an artist you're your own worst critic and you definitely don't want to keep doing things the same. I've always felt that Sevendust is Sevendust and we've never really gotten away from that Sevendust sound. On this album we were able to get back to a more... familiar side of it".Kris Peters

F. is a theatre production by Riot Stage, a youth theatre company based in Melbourne. It is part of Poppy Seed Festival, Poppy Seed is in its second year, it aimed producing shows made by independent and emerging theatre companies. F. followed a lives of a group of teenagers, it was composed of short scenes playing out different stories throughout the show, they sometimes became connected and it all ending in a huge stylised movement and piece. These explored all sorts of themes around being in the world as a teenager in modern Australia. It focused a lot on mental health, queerness and sexuality, the internet and consent. F. felt like a devised show, but it was written by Morgan Rose, the writing was very naturalistic, almost as if it was verbatim. Stylistically it was very beautiful it had a strong and clear aesthetic and mood, the lighting design was very beautiful and precise, although I liked the sound design, I felt like I wanted a bit more, the space F. was performed in was pretty big, sometimes the space felt empty, I feel like it could have been filled up with a creative use of sound design. The performances from the ensemble were fantastic; it’s great to see a youth theatre still going strong after the youth arts funding cuts. I was sad to see that only the names of the ensemble were listed in the program and they didn’t get a full bio, I can’t wait to see what these performers move onto next. I felt very connected with many of the characters, the stories they told were very relatable and very realistic. F. was a delightful, dark and intelligent work by a fantastic ensemble of young people. It gave a great insight into what it is like growing up in Australia today in the age of the Internet. F. has been the most diverse show in Poppy Seed, the lack of diversity within this festival has been disappointing, I hope to see more diversity in years to come, including cultural background, ability, and it would be great to see Poppy Seed giving space for theatre companies from a rural area. I also feel disappointed in the lack of accessibility to the festival venues, the butterfly club has no wheelchair access and I called the trades hall in Carlton and they said wheelchair access was very tricky. To me, being a theatre maker and artist should mean allowing access to people of all abilities to your shows, this may mean diverting funds from other places to book venues that are a bit more expensive but accessible, making sure there is Auslan interpretation and audio description, these things may be expensive but I think it is important, theatre and art should be for everyone. These issues aside Poppy Seed is an excellent initiative, should and needs to be supported so that they can afford to make the changes they need to with accessibility and diversity, they give independent and emerging artists a great space to explore and put up work on at a main stage, which is exciting and a great addition to Melbourne’s theatre scene, so let’s keep supporting it and making sure future theatre makers get the same opportunity. F. is showing at The Trades Hall in Carlton South until December 11th.Written by Ebony Beaton.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
F. is a theatre production by Riot Stage, a youth theatre company based in Melbourne. Fun Saturday topic: Men! How do you choose them, why are they are just not what you planned on to fullfill you in life? Are they dried up bread, like snakes in the grass or heavy as lard? Today we are going to have fun discussing men and sharing stories and thoughts around all their qualities. Do we really need a man to complete us and take out the garbage? Perhaps it is time for us to empower ourselves and not look for men to carry the load, we truly can carry our own load and it is a whole other level when looking for a man when you have stepped it up.Casual conversation today with Morgan Rose, author of On Becoming NaughtABimbeaux: The Smart Woman's Guide to Finding her Prince without ever Kissing another Frog.
