An interesting movie mix for you this week on BEHIND THE LENS thanks to director DUNCAN SKILES and his new film NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH, and director LORCAN FINNEGAN and his latest THE SURFER. As different as night and day, both films showcase storytelling creativity and some incredible – and indelible – performances, most notably from Nic Cage in THE SURFER. First up, NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH. Directed by DUNCAN SKILES, who you may know best for directing THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER, NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH rises and falls on the compelling mystery plot and the performances by Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Ed and Jack Quaid as Simon. As you will hear from Duncan in this pre-recorded exclusive interview, he was drawn to writer Sean Farley's script for its unique and heartwarming dynamic between Ed and Simon. Duncan found it sweet, bittersweet, and not overly sentimental. The script had a mix of elements – thrills, mystery, and comedy – which appealed to him, and which he brings to life with a naturalistic look and feel thanks to cinematographer Luke McCoubrey. After THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER, Duncan was looking for something lighter, and this script was an easy read where he found himself rooting for the characters and wanting to spend time with them. Then we switch gears and hit the western coast of Australia with the sun and the surf with director LORCAN FINNEGAN and THE SURFER with a total mind fuck, batshit brilliant performance by Nic Cage. Needless to say, I love this movie! A psychological thriller directed by Lorcan Finnegan, a man identified as "The Surfer" – played by Cage – returns to the idyllic beach of his childhood to surf with his son, played by Finn Little of "Yellowstone" fame. But his desire to hit the waves is thwarted by a group of locals led by Scally – maniacally played by Julian McMahon – whose mantra is "don't live here, don't surf here." Humiliated and angry, "The Surfer" is drawn into a conflict that keeps rising in concert with the punishing heat of the summer and pushes him to his breaking point. Take a listen as Lorcan breaks down THE SURFER from Cage to story to casting to cinematography to editing to sound to score, and even the appearance of native snakes and a kookabura. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Before taking off for the upcoming Chicago Critics Film Festival (May 2-8) which they program, Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy review nine movies this week. They include the latest from Francois Ozon (When Fall Is Coming) and a Jim Henson-like fantasy from A24 (The Legend of Ochi). Jack Quaid and Jeffrey Dean Morgan make for unique investigators of a kidnapping (Neighborhood Watch) and a new video game adaptation is decidedly less unique (Until Dawn). Daisy Edgar-Jones and Jacob Elordi have secrets in the 1950s (On Swift Horses) and we take a trip through the careers of one of the most famous comedy teams of all-time (Cheech & Chong's Last Movie). David Cronenberg takes us on a conspiratorial meditation on grief and death (The Shrouds) while Gareth Evans has Tom Hardy deliver so much death (Havoc) and, nine years later, Ben Affleck's lethal autistic numbers cruncher returns with bro Jon Bernthal (The Accountant 2). 2:56 - When Fall Is Coming 9:44 - Neighborhood Watch 15:08 – The Legend of Ochi 19:42 - Havoc 33:46 - Until Dawn 41:19 - On Swift Horses 52:58 - Cheech & Chong's Last Movie 1:06:30 - The Shrouds 1:19:35 - The Accountant 2

This April, we're spotlighting the freshest and most fear-inducing new arrivals to Shudder — and kicking things off with a bloody bang. First up: Bloody Axe Wound, a twisted coming-of-age slasher that's equal parts gory and gripping. Starring Sari Arambulo, Molly Brown, Billy Burke, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, the film follows Abbie Bladecut (Arambulo), a teenager grappling with the terrifying legacy of her blood-soaked lineage. As the daughter of infamous serial killer Roger Bladecut, Abbie's journey to self-discovery is anything but ordinary. Haunted by her past and stalked by a copycat killer with a vendetta, Abbie must confront the darkness that runs through her veins — and decide whether she's destined to follow in her father's footsteps or forge a different path. Bloody Axe Wound blends slasher nostalgia with sharp modern edge, making it a standout entry in Shudder's April lineup. Stay tuned as we continue to explore the must-watch horror dropping this month.

CELEBRATING WOMEN IN HORROR, PART 1 I had the absolute honor and pleasure of speaking to Sari about her role in Shudder's Original “Bloody Axe Wound” where as this movie has been categorized as a coming-to-age film. Although a mixed bag of nods to other horror movies, I would have to say that this movie is nothing short of a slashing prodigy. Sari nailed the role of Abbie, and her co-stars were in their absolute best by delivering to me what is one of the best horror comedies that has been offered in 2024. We spoke about her perspective of Abbie and what it was like to portray her along with what she thought was her inspirations to her role and the film. And she did admit that she is a Twilight fan, so acting alongside Billy Burke was a total fan girl's dream come true. Although she did present some challenges in the role and movie, all in all, I can see that she genuinely loved being a part of it. The only small detail that I was slightly disappointed with is that Jeffrey Dean Morgan didn't have a baseball bat with him in the opening scene. Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, and I highly recommend watching it as soon as you can. With the end scene of Sam resurrecting from the dead, there may be a sequel to this movie, and I truly hope that there is. Overall, it's a fun ride with a wild twist to the horror genre. 5 out of 5, no doubts.

So the Halloween Boutique Psychotronic Reviews podcast decided to do an episode on the 2009 movie WATCHMEN but our discussion went a bit long as we discussed the background to the movie, and its source material. So we decided to break it into two episodes. The second is all about the movie itself.Directed by Zack Snyder, written by David Hayter and Alex Tse, and starring Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Good, Jackie Earle Haley, Patrick Wilson, Carla Gugino, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, was not the success that the studio had hoped. With the usual debate between the fans of the graphic novel and superheroes in general, backlash and praise were both the norm. Now fifteen years later, the movie has become somewhat of a cult classic. With its fabulous special effects, splendid acting, and changes to the story to make it fit within a movie length, the film, though polarizing, continues to find audiences through streaming. Your cohosts take a look at the film itself and give their thoughts.

Eric: Not counting wrestling, Im saying honourable mentions would be from the 1990s my childhood that i go back and watch: Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Murder She Wrote, Columbo, Matlock, Spiderman Johnny Bravo, Criminal Minds, Law and Order, Living Out of your Car, Bored To Death, Burn Notice, How To Make It In America, Hell On Wheels, Breaking Bad, early Walking Dead, The Wire, Will and Grace, Quantum Leap, all of the Star Treks. Top 5: 5 - Bosh - Police procedural featuring Titus Welliver, I read the first four books in a row, currently heading on book five of like 35, once I finish another book i'm on. It's amazing. If you could literally pick anyone who captures Bosh, it's Titus Welliver. 4. Brooklyn Nine Nine - I've seen every episode twice, it's outstanding. Jake Peralta and Charles Boyle are hilarious. 3. Highlander from the 1990s, I remember watching it pre knowing about the films it was based on and thought for Canadian content it was great. 2. Celebrity Name Game - Craig Ferguson hosted this guessing game where Celebrities and fans would team up to try and win the fan some money. 1 Law and Order SVU - Easily the best police procedural of all time. Olivia Benson and her team have seen it all. Also shout out to Law and Order Organized Crime where they gave Stabler basically his own show so neither he or Benson can feel overshadowed. X: @E_Freeds IG: @NatteringWithE Brundan Honourable mentions: Oz, Simpsons, Entourage, Game of Thrones, Stranger Things, Ren and Stempy. Top 5: 5 - Sopranos - Dug a lady, but dug the show more, saw one episode and was hooked. Most rewatches of any show I've seen. 4 - Futurama - When it first came out it was excellent. When it went to Adult Swim I was hooked on everything. Had my friends over to watch. Until it was brought back it had the best ending. 3- Letterkenney - Turned on to that during pandemic, blew through it, it's one of the most bingeable shows I've ever watched. Great ending, sad to see it end. Jared Keo as Wayne Shoresy, is fantastic. 2- Law and Order SVU - Watching it for 20 years, loved every episode, every character change, every story ark. Munch the best character, dark and sad but very good watch. 1- The Venture Brothers - My favourite show of all time, ran for 7 seasons 81 episodes, 4 specials, every single one of them was great. Drop subtle hints in the early seasons then pay off in later seasons. Brock Samson phenomenal character. Johnny Quest rip off originally then became it's own show. X: @Irishmisfit Follow: ShiningWizards, ROH Revelry, SJ: Honourable Mentions: SOA, Law and Order Franchise, Metalocalypse, Robot Chicken, Rick and Morty, Big Mouth, Oz, Orange Is The New Black, Fringe Top 5: 5 - Saved By The Bell - Favourite since I was a kid, gave good lessons and advice, great characters. Present day Zach Morris is trash. Lazy at home show, tons of seasons to watch. Favourite Episode: Jessie addicted to caffeine pills. 4 - Beverley Hills 90210 - Learnt things, great teen drama, storylines, Dylan McKay was my bad boy first crush. 3- American Horror Stories - 2021 series, spin off of American Horror Story, Daphney episode where it's like Alexa but a psycho version. A lot of good freaky horror gore stories. Always famous people, and Kim Kardashian 2- American Horror Story - Twisted episodes, messed up themes, one of my favourite seasons were season 1 murder house, coven, hotel with Lady Gaga, the season where they did 1984, very 80s murder based, season 9 was 1984. I love everything horror and gore. 1- Walking Dead - Religiously hooked from season 1 to season 9 or 10. Ordered in take out just to watch it. Discovered Norman Reedus aka Darryl Dixon. Jeffrey Dean Morgan showing up was excellent too. SJ: @KarnivalofKhaos Follow: Frigid Eh every Wednesday, Good Cop Bad Cop, Markin Out With Tom!
