Matt Taibbi discusses the controversial new developments surrounding possible corruption in the Biden family. Taibbi takes us back to the original controversy of Biden’s supposed pressure on the Ukrainian government to dismiss prosecutor Viktor Shokin when Biden was Vice President. The mainstream press, says Taibbi, remains united in their view on this issue: the dismissal had nothing to do with Hunter Biden’s activities on the board of Ukrainian energy company Burisma, and anyone claiming otherwise is just spouting right-wing talking points. In his latest series of articles, Taibbi reexamines some of the circumstances surrounding this story. He also ties it to more recent revelations about Hunter Biden’s laptop, a story that has received even more disdain from the mainstream media. Taibbi is deeply concerned about tech company censorship of news organizations, fearing that this could signal a trend that spells the loss of a free press in America. According to Barna researcher Brooke Hempell, "More than any other segment of the population, white evangelicals demonstrate a blindness to the struggle of their African American brothers and sisters.” Why is this? In this episode, Don tackles this question from several angles, and addresses the myth that we live in a post-racist society.Links to go with the show:Black Christians Deserve Better Than Companies (And Churches) Like Relevant Media Group: https://medium.com/@andrehenry/black-christians-deserve-better-than-companies-like-relevant-media-group-42aed44528c9This Topic Got Me Censored and Removed from Conservative Catholic Radio: https://medium.com/@don_43125/this-topic-got-me-censored-and-removed-from-conservative-catholic-radio-6ebbe3c142b9Summary of Ferguson DOJ Report: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2015/03/04/the-12-key-highlights-from-the-dojs-scathing-ferguson-report/I Can't Breathe: A Killing on Bay Street: https://www.amazon.com/Cant-Breathe-Killing-Bay-Street/dp/0812988841/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=i+can%27t+breathe&qid=1571810439&sr=8-2The Case for Reparations: https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2014/06/the-case-for-reparations/361631/
Steve Adubato goes one-on-one to talk with Rolling Stone contributor, Matt Taibbi, about his book “I Can’t Breathe: A Killing on Bay Street” about the controversial death of Eric Garner. Taibbi also discusses the challenges in covering the Trump administration.
Journalist and author Matt Taibbi joins the show to talk about his latest book chapter, titled: “It's official: Russiagate is this generation's WMD: The Iraq war faceplant damaged the reputation of the press. Russiagate just destroyed it” and we discuss some corporate media reaction to the piece. We think back on the changes to American policy and American life brought about by the WMD lies, the Iraq War and the War on Terror and the likelihood of serious, real world consequences of the Russiagate conspiracy. This is one of the reasons why it’s so important to re-examinine the origins and details of the Russiagate story now that it has collapsed. But even as the Russiagate conspiracy collapses, the curiously bipartisan consensus on the matter of Russia being a threat to our democracy lives on -- or at least the establishment and national security state are working hard to make sure it survives even if all or most other aspects of the narrative die. Four years ago this week, on July 17, 2014, Eric Garner died in Staten Island at the hands of a New York City police officer. We probably wouldn't have known if it hadn't been for a cellphone video that captured his arrest, the excessive force that killed him, and his final words. The national media couldn't look away, until they did look away. Matt Taibbi is a journalist and author of the book, I Can't Breathe: A Killing on Bay Street, an exploration of Eric Garner's life and death in the media — and of his real life, too. Brooke spoke to him last year. On the Media is supported by listeners like you. Support OTM by donating today (https://pledge.wnyc.org/support/otm). The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Matt Taibbi, Author of I Can't Breathe; A Killing on Bay Street. I CAN'T BREATHE takes the reader to Bay Street before Garner's death, introducing us to friends, family, rivals – and Garner himself. Taibbi traces the history of gentrification and policing as it intersects with Garner's personal narrative. Weeks after Garner's death, two New York City police officers were killed by a young black man from Maryland, in what he claimed was revenge for Garner's death. Those killings in turn led to police protests, clashes with New York's new liberal mayor. MATT TAIBBI, author of the New York Times bestsellers The Divide, Griftopia, and The Great Derangement, is a contributing editor for Rolling Stone and winner of the 2008 National Magazine Award for columns and commentary. @mtaibbi
