Hunter Biden is an American attorney, businessman, and author and the son of President Joe Biden. Born in Delaware and shaped by profound personal tragedies and a diverse career in finance, policy, and international ventures. His mother and sister passed away in a car accident when he was young, and his brother, who survived the accident, later passed at age 46 from brain cancer. Married to Melissa Cohen, with whom he has one child. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Georgetown University and earned a Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School, before working briefly as a Jesuit volunteer in Portland, Oregon, and transitioning into banking and politics. Biden built his early career at MBNA America, then served at the United States Department of Commerce, focusing on e-commerce policy during the Clinton administration. In 2001, he co-founded the lobbying firm Oldaker, Biden & Belair, which worked on issues including online gambling. He served as a board member of Amtrak and is a founding partner of Rosemont Seneca Partners, an investment and advisory firm. He previously was on the board of BHR Partners, a China-based private equity firm, and from 2014 to 2019, he served on the board of Burisma Holdings, a Ukrainian energy company owned by Mykola Zlochevsky, amid political investigations. In 2013, Biden joined the U.S. Navy Reserve as an ensign, but was discharged in 2014. Biden has publicly admitted to struggles with addiction, detailed in his 2021 memoir Beautiful Things, and has been sober since 2019. He faced public controversies, including the 2018 laptop scandal, and was under federal criminal investigation for tax matters and firearm possession. In 2024, he pleaded guilty to failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes from 2016 to 2019 on foreign income, which he spent on drugs and luxuries. The story we've been told is simple: in February 2022, Vladimir Putin woke up one morning, decided to invade a peaceful, democratic Ukraine, and launched an “unprovoked war.” That's the official narrative. But history is never that simple.From the 1990s onward, Moscow warned that NATO expansion into its backyard was a red line. Gorbachev and later Yeltsin were assured that the alliance would not creep eastward. Yet step by step—Poland, Hungary, the Baltics, talk of Georgia and Ukraine—NATO advanced. To Washington, enlargement was “stability.” To Moscow, it was encirclement.The real break came in 2014. Ukraine's elected president, Viktor Yanukovych, leaned toward Moscow on trade and energy. That was unacceptable to Washington and Brussels. When mass protests erupted in Kyiv, the U.S. wasn't a bystander. Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland and Senator John McCain both appeared on the ground, cheering the crowds. In a leaked call, Nuland infamously dismissed Europe's hesitance—“F*** the EU”—while handpicking who should form the next government. To Moscow, this was regime change with CIA, State, and USAID fingerprints all over it.The revolution ousted Yanukovych and installed a Western-leaning government. Overnight, Ukraine shifted from Moscow's orbit to Brussels'. What followed wasn't peace. In Donbas, the Russian-speaking east rose in rebellion. Kyiv responded with force. Shelling, rockets, and artillery fire turned towns into rubble. Between 2014 and 2022, more than 14,000 people died in a grinding low-intensity war. For people in Donetsk or Luhansk, the war didn't begin in 2022—it had already been burning for eight years.This backstory matters because it reframes 2022. Putin didn't invade a neutral neighbor out of nowhere. He acted after decades of ignored warnings and eight years of bloodshed in the Donbas. Was the invasion brutal? Yes. Was it unprovoked? Hardly.Critics will call this “carrying water for Putin.” But acknowledging how the West lit the fuse doesn't absolve Moscow of blame. It explains why Russia saw the stakes as existential. When Ukraine amended its constitution to commit to NATO membership, Moscow heard one message: eventually, U.S. missiles could sit 300 miles from Moscow. For a nuclear power that lost 27 million lives in World War II, this wasn't abstract.The West believed sanctions would collapse Russia's economy and that Putin would face regime change. Instead, Moscow built its own military-industrial base, deepened ties with China, India, and the BRICS bloc, and weathered the storm. Far from isolating Russia, the war accelerated a global realignment away from dollar dominance.Meanwhile, Ukraine—brilliant engineers, fertile farmland, energy transit routes—has become a pawn. Western politicians invoke democracy while oligarchs, defense contractors, and energy interests profit. Hunter Biden's Burisma board seat was not an outlier; it was a symptom of how entangled Washington had become in Ukraine's internal affairs.This isn't a defense of Russia's invasion. It's a reminder that wars don't appear overnight. They build. They escalate. They ignite only after a fuse has been laid. In Ukraine, that fuse was NATO expansion, the 2014 coup, and the long, bloody stalemate in Donbas.The world didn't start burning in 2022. We just finally saw the explosion.

I just spent three hours watching Hunter Biden, and I have a lot of thoughts. The interview, done by Andrew Callahan for Channel 5, is something like a confessional crossed with a stand-up set crossed with a Twitter thread that never ends. It's raw, it's chaotic, and weirdly, it's compelling. If you're a politics junkie, a media analyst, or just curious about the human side of scandal, there's a lot to pick apart.First off, the man is online. Not just vaguely aware of what's being said about him — he's terminally online. He knows the jokes, the subtext, the usernames. I'm convinced he has burner accounts. He's tracking how people talk about him in real time, and it bleeds through every answer. He's got a list — Tapper, the Pod Save crew, Alex Jones, Stephen Miller, and on and on. He names names, and he torches them. It's Seth Rollins with a flamethrower.But what's interesting is how seriously he talks about addiction, sobriety, and crack — yes, crack specifically. He draws lines between drugs, dives into the stigma, and explains how being labeled a “crack addict” shaped public perception of him. These are by far the most honest and lucid parts of the interview. And they reveal someone who's done the work of recovery — while still slipping into the old reflexes of deflection when the political heat turns up.He has this quote about “an evil symbiosis between money and power” — and I couldn't help but think, does he hear himself? He's talking about systems he's literally a product of. And yet, he stays focused on everyone else's money. When he brings someone up, it's almost always first by how rich they are. Soros, Tapper, Bannon — doesn't matter who it is, the cash comes first. There's this constant undercurrent of scorekeeping.He also confirms, in his way, that the laptop is real — then turns around and champions the “hallmarks of Russian disinfo” letter like it was gospel. The tension never resolves. He owns up to some things, skirts others, and delivers just enough contradiction to keep everyone debating. Even when he talks about Burisma, he says the quiet part out loud: “I had connections.” That's the trick, the real reason he was on that board. And he knows it.What stuck with me, though, was his resentment. Not anger — that's expected — but a deep, lingering bitterness toward the people he feels used him, abandoned him, or dismissed him. It gives the whole interview a kind of edge that goes beyond politics. When he talks about the media, about Democrats who've distanced themselves, or even about his father, there's a tension. Like he's still waiting for someone to publicly say they screwed him over. He wants vindication as much as he wants attention.And that's where it lands. This wasn't an attempt to reset the narrative — it was a live demo of the very chaos people accuse him of embodying. He wants to be understood, but not too clearly. He wants to admit things, but only on his terms. He wants to lash out, but still come off sympathetic. It's maddening, self-aware, and oddly human. Not everything related to any Democratic politician needs to be held in contrast to him. It's lazy at best and corrosive at worst.* AddictionI don't often play this card, but I am the son of an alcoholic and was raised by a problem gambler. Both went to 12-step programs for their issues. Addiction is a multi-faceted problem that deserves sophisticated empathy, but it is NOT an enchantment shielding you from the consequences of your actions. Quite the opposite: the 12-step program is designed to rebuild your sense of responsibility by repairing the damage you caused while afflicted.The pardon not only reveals the 46th president as a craven cardboard cutout of a decent man, but it also expands the bounds of presidential pardons in a uniquely selfish direction under the sickening guise of loyalty to family.But no one should be surprised if you've followed this story from the beginning. It is one unforced error after the next. One hapless mistake after another defended by unhinged self-indulgence. Let's walk the timeline that led us to the most recent crimes:* Hunter Biden's LaptopHunter leaves a laptop at a computer repair shop and forgets it. The shop owner realizes who owns it and turns it over to the FBI. After nothing is done and Joe Biden's campaign makes statements the shop owner knows to be false, the laptop is leaked to the press.* Joe Biden's ResponseHis campaign denies fault, deflects blame, and hides behind Hunter's addiction.* 51 intelligence experts sign a letter calling it Russian disinformation.* Biden repeats this during a debate.* Twitter and Facebook are pressured to suppress links to coverage.The laptop is later proven real.* Tax InvestigationIn 2020, Hunter announces he is being investigated for tax fraud (ongoing since 2018).In 2023, a plea deal is reached. Hunter agrees to plead guilty to two misdemeanor tax charges and enters a pretrial diversion program for a felony firearm offense (illegal possession of a gun while using drugs). The deal is expected to avoid jail time.* IRS WhistleblowersTwo IRS whistleblowers testify before Congress, alleging misconduct and interference in the Hunter Biden investigation. They claim their efforts to pursue charges were stymied by higher-ups in the Justice Department.* The Plea Deal CollapsesDuring a court hearing, U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika raises concerns about the plea deal's scope, particularly its immunity from future charges. Hunter pleads not guilty.* Specifically, the deal reportedly included an agreement not to prosecute Hunter for any federal crimes going forward:"The United States agrees not to criminally prosecute Biden, outside of the terms of this Agreement, for any federal crimes encompassed."* Hunter's MemoirThe gun charge stems from Hunter's own admissions in his memoir, Beautiful Things, where he describes active crack cocaine addiction during the period he purchased the firearm.* Quote: “I used my superpower—finding crack anytime, anywhere.”* Despite knowing his addiction, he lied on ATF Form 4473 when purchasing the gun.Hunter sabotaged his own sweetheart plea deal by overreaching for immunity. He was the star witness for his own prosecution because he had to write a book about his new found sobriety.But if Joe just commuted Hunter's sentencing for these crimes, it wouldn't be as big of a deal. Sure he'd be a hypocrite but what's the real world damage? Hunter didn't spend a month in prison? He avoided probation?But that's not what Joe did. He did something far greater and no one should forget it.Joe Biden granted his son a blanket pardon for any and all crimes committed from 2014 to 2024—an unprecedented eleven years.This goes beyond Hunter's tax crimes and gun charge, extending into the period when Hunter joined the board of Burisma—the focal point of influence-peddling allegations against the Biden family.For context:* Ford's pardon of Nixon aimed to move the country past Watergate.* Biden's pardon serves his own family and raises fresh suspicions about influence peddling.The White House's defense: the incoming Justice Department might weaponize its authority to target the Biden family on exaggerated charges.I would say for the forever power hunger Joe, that same logic fueled Trump's resurgence from a pariah to a potential two-term president. Maybe they should have let it happen.Instead, this pardon undermines Biden's credibility, damages the perception of the presidency, and sets a dangerous precedent for self-serving executive overreach.So let's get to the “But Trump…” of it all. Trump issued two pardons that are similar to this one.* Kodak BlackTrump pardoned the rapper after serving a year of a 46-month sentence for lying on a federal gun form.* Charles KushnerConvicted and served time for a 2005 charge. Pardoned to clear his record.Both of them spent time in prison for their offenses. Either got blanket pardons that extended beyond what Dick Nixon received.TheTrump pardons may be gross but don't set new precedent. They don't personally benefit the president.Biden's pardon of Hunter does.Hunter never paid a price. Joe Biden's legacy should. This is a public episode.
