How do you determine which books are the "right" books for your children? Charlotte Mason said they must LIKE their books, right? Or did she? We explore the nuances of children's taste and how much a role that should play in our choices of their lesson books in this episode. “The children must enjoy their books." (3/178) "What manner of book will find its way with upheaving effect into the mind of an intelligent boy or girl? We need not ask what the firl or boy likes. She very often likes the twaddle of goody-goody storybooks, he likes condiments, highly-spiced tales of adventure. We are all capable of liking mental food of a poor quality..." (3/168) "[T]he happiness of the child is the condition of his progress; that his lessons should be joyous, and that occasions of friction in the schoolroom are greatly to be deprecated." (1/178, emphasis added) "Our conception of a child rules our relations towards him. Pour s'amuser is the rule of child-life proper for the 'oyster' theory, and most of our children's books and many of our theories of child-education are based upon this rule. 'Oh! he's so happy,' we say, and are content, believing that if he is happy he will be good; and it is so to a great extent; but in the older days the theory was, if you are good you will be happy; and this is a principle which strikes the keynote of endeavour, and holds good, not only through the childish 'stage of evolution,' but for the whole of life, here and hereafter. The child who has learned to 'endeavour himself' (as the Prayer Book has it) has learned to live." (2/254) "Your opinions about books and other things will very likely be wrong, and you will yourself correct them by and by when you have read more, thought more, know more. Indeed, no wise person, however old, is sure of his opinions." (4/I/183-84) "A child has not begun his education until he has acquired the habit of reading to himself, with interest and pleasure, books fully on a level with his intelligence. I am speaking now of his lesson-books, which are all too apt to be written in a style of insufferable twaddle, probably because they are written by persons who have never chanced to meet a child. All who know children know that they do not talk twaddle and do not like it, and prefer that which appeals to their understanding. Their lesson-books should offer matter for their reading, whether aloud or to themselves; therefore they should be written with literary power. As for the matter of these books, let us remember that children can take in ideas and principles, whether the latter be moral or mechanical, as quickly and clearly as we do ourselves (perhaps more so); but detailed processes, lists and summaries, blunt the edge of a child's delicate mind." (1/229) "A corollary of the principle that education is the science of relations, is, that no education seems to be worth the name which has not made children at home in the world of books, and so related them, mind to mind, with thinkers who have dealt with knowledge. We reject epitomes, compilations, and their like, and put into children's hands books which, long or short, are living. Thus it becomes a large part of the teacher's work to help children to deal with their books; so that the oral lesson and lecture are but small matters in education, and are used chiefly to summarise or to expand or illustrate." (3/226) "We are apt to believe that children cannot be interested in the Bible unless its pages be watered down––turned into the slipshod English we prefer to offer them." (1/247-48) "We are determined that the children shall love books, therefore we do not interpose ourselves between the book and the child. We read him his Tanglewood Tales, and when he is a little older his Plutarch, not trying to break up or water down, but leaving the child's mind to deal with the matter as it can." (2/231-32) "The teacher's part in this regard is to see and feel for himself, and then to rouse his pupils by an appreciative look or word; but to beware how he deadens the impression by a flood of talk. Intellectual sympathy is very stimulating; but we have all been in the case of the little girl who said, 'Mother, I think I could understand if you did not explain quite so much.'" (3/178) "The real use of naturalists' books at this stage is to give the child delightful glimpses into the world of wonders he lives in, to reveal the sorts of things to be seen by curious eyes, and fill him with desire to make discoveries for himself." (1/64) "This sort of weak literature for the children, both in any story and lesson books, is the result of a reactionary process. Not so long ago the current impression was that the children had little understanding, but prodigious memory for facts; dates, numbers, rules, catechisms of knowledge, much information in small parcels, was supposed to be the fitting material for a child's education. We have changed all that, and put into the children's hands lesson-books with pretty pictures and easy talk, almost as good as story-books; but we do not see that, after all, we are but giving the same little pills of knowledge in the form of a weak and copious diluent. Teachers, and even parents, who are careful enough about their children's diet, are so reckless as to the sort of mental aliment offered to them, that I am exceedingly anxious to secure consideration for this question, of the lessons and literature proper for the little people." (1/176) "In their power of giving impulse and stirring emotion is another use of books, the right books; but that is just the question––which are the right books?––a point upon which I should not wish to play Sir Oracle. The 'hundred best books for the schoolroom' may be put down on a list, but not by me. I venture to propose one or two principles in the matter of school-books, and shall leave the far more difficult part, the application of those principles, to the reader." (3/177) "Children cannot answer questions set on the wrong book; and the difficulty of selection is increased by the fact that what they like in books is no more a guide than what they like in food." Returning guest, author Amie Kaufman heads back to the Chalk with Liz and Ben to face the rough music in a bumper-size discussion of the penultimate Tiffany Aching book, 2010's I Shall Wear Midnight. Tiffany Aching, nearly sixteen, is no longer an apprentice. Now two years under the witch's hat, she cares for those as can't care for themselves, and deals with the harsh realities of rural life. But all is not well in the Chalk: the unending need for its only witch is pushing Tiffany to the edge, and an act of violence - and its consequences - test her limits. Roland, the Baron's son, is engaged - but not to Tiffany. While he's away, the old Baron dies, and Tiffany must fetch him home to take his place. And on top of all that, something is stirring: something old and evil that stirs up old prejudices and fears about witches - and is aiming them directly at Tiffany Aching... Content note: this episode contains discussion of (fictional) intimate partner and family violence, miscarriage and suicide. If you or anyone you know needs help, use the Wikipedia list of crisis lines to find one local to you. Nearly three years after she danced the Dark Morris and kissed the Wintersmith, we rejoin Tiffany Aching, who is discovering that even fixing her mistakes can have consequences. But is this really a book for younger readers - or even young adults - when it includes some of the heaviest stuff of any Discworld novel? Does it all hang together, or are there a few ideas fighting each other in this plot? Who knew what and when about the Cunning Man, and is he Pratchett's creepiest villain yet? What spill words do you not say when you're listening to the show? Join in the conversation using the hashtag #Pratchat66 on social media! Returning guest Amie Kaufman is the author of (so far) twenty novels for middle grade and young adult audiences, including the Illuminae Files and Aurora Cycle sci-fi trilogies with Jay Kristoff; the Elementals, Starbound and Unearthed series with Meagan Spooner, and the World Between Blinks books with Ryan Graudin. For Pratchett fans she recommends her upcoming YA fantasy novel Isles of the Gods, launching in May 2023. As mentioned in the episode, Amie also produces two podcasts about writing: Amie Kaufman on Writing, a 10-minute masterclass on writing techniques, and Pub Dates, in which she and co-writer Meagan Spooner take you behind the scenes on writing and publishing a novel, and what comes after. This week on the Millionaire Car Salesman Podcast, L.A. Williams dives into the ultimate success story. From the streets of Peru to top salesmen on the showroom floor, listen in as this week's guest discusses how to overcome hardships and create a better life for yourself. Joining L.A. this week is Ernesto Servan, the General Sales Manager of Garlyn Shelton Buick GMC based in Temple, TX. Ernesto has been in sales since he was six years old selling lollipops on the beaches of Peru. After his days selling lollipops, Ernesto moved to the United States, joined the military and began selling phones as a part time job. One day he met someone at the mall who was looking to get into the automotive business and asked Ernesto to go with him to the dealership. He has been in car sales since June 2001. His first month he sold 17 cars with minimal knowledge of the industry. His former finance manager and role model, Terry Cameron, trained the sales people that they should practice without customers so they would be better prepared in front of them. From that point on, Ernesto dedicated himself to training and learning to do more, be more and achieve more, as Sean V. Bradley would say. Ernesto held the title of top salesman of the month for approximately two to three years at his first dealership. That's when he transitioned from the sales floor to the internet team where he and the internet director averaged selling 50-60 cars a month. It wasn't long until opportunity came knocking again - this time as a management position. In his management career, Ernesto strives to train his team to be the best. He has implemented a number of practices that keep his team well trained and prepared for the sales floor including Automotive Profit Builders. One of the biggest mistakes a salesperson can make is getting too smart for the game. Make sure you cover the basics and don't skip any steps in the road to the sale. About Ernesto Servan Ernesto Servan was born in Lima, Peru. His dad passed away in 1985 a month before Ernesto's sixth birthday. About a year later, his brother, Carlos, lost his right hand and his vision from a grenade while in the military. Carlos came to America seeking medical help and when the doctor's did all they could, they sent him to a rehab center in Albuquerque, New Mexico where he would learn to live without his vision. Carlos began attending the University of New Mexico on a scholarship when the paperwork came through for Ernesto and their sister to move in with him and his wife. Together, they lived in a one bedroom studio apartment. In 1997, Ernesto graduated high school and enrolled in the army. After four years in the military, Ernesto got an additional part time job selling cell phones. He worked from 5:00am to 10:00pm Monday to Friday and all day on the weekends to save what he could. When the opportunity came to work in car sales, Ernesto's life changed once again and he doubled his income within the first 30 days in automotive sales. What he loves most about the industry is changing people's lives the way the industry has changed his life. To learn more about Carlos and his take on life, be on the lookout for his book “Began to Run Again,” the second-best selling memoir at the International Book Fair in Lima, Peru. Everyone loves the story of an underdog. A tale of someone with all the odds stacked against them, and manages to come back and surprise the world with their amazing feats. The type of person who has Islands named after them and can inspire a nation Someone who is so impressive at what they have accomplished, you can almost forget and forgive their flaws. Horatio always had a poor disposition. His stomach afflicted him in ways he barely handled. When he was born, his mother didn't believe he would survive infancy, and in fact he nearly died. As a child Horatio suffered many illnesses such as measles and marsh fever. He was afflicted constantly by coughs and colds. Being born in 1758 and the sixth of eleven children, Horatio knew that his only chance of leading a successful life was to join the military. Horatio had an uncle in the navy who was a captain, and at the age of twelve he went to his uncle and told him of his intent to enlist. In response, Horatio's uncle, the Naval Captain Maurice Suckling, was surprised and remarked: ‘what has poor Horatio done, who is so weak, that he above all the rest should be sent to rough it out at sea?' They might not have known it at the time, but was a premonition of what was yet to come. SHOW NOTES: Sickly Seadog While life at sea made Horatio much more robust than in his childhood, he was still extremely susceptible to illness. Over his years of service Horatio suffered from malaria, yellow fever, scurvy, tuberculosis and dysentery. All of which he bore stoically. Nelson Fights a Polar Bear One of Horatio's first voyages was on the bomb vessel HMS Carcass as a coxswain on a voyage of exploration in the Arctic to try and reach the North Pole. He was only 15 years old at the time. When they set sail on their expedition in 1773 there was a theory circulating around the world there was an open sea near the North Pole. Inevitably the two ships in the expedition quickly became stuck in the ice. While stranded, young Horatio spotted a polar bear in the distance. He set off across the ice with his musket, intending to run the creature down. Coming to a halt, Horatio paused and studied his hand, then pulled the trigger. Unfortunately his gun misfired. Nelson Fights the Walrus While in the arctic, two of the ships' boats were sent off to try and find a passage out of the ice. During their expedition, one of the boats decided on a little bit of sport with a walrus. They managed to shoot and wound one, but the beast dived down into the sea, escaping from his hunters. When the walrus resurfaced, he came with reinforcements. Several of the walruses proceeded to attack the boat putting it at risk of being overturned. Horatio, in the other boat, raced to their rescue and chased the walruses away. Promoted to Captain Just 5 years after the arctic expedition, Horatio was promoted to Captain. The now captain was given command of a frigate and took part in operations against Spanish settlements in Nicaragua at just 20 years of age. After the American Revolution Captain Horatio Nelson returned to England, but was soon dispatched to the West Indies again. It was in the West Indies where he met his future wife, Frances and her son, Josiah. No Eyes, No Arms Not only was Horatio Nelson sickly, but he ws rather prone to injury as well. In 1794 he Horatio lost partial sight in right eye. The incident occurred while he was engaged in an operation to capture the island of Sardinia. While on shore a cannon ball landed nearby. The shot showered his face with debris. There was no wound on the eye and it is likely that he suffered from a detached retina. He would never properly see from his right eye again. Just a few years later he was stuck by a musket ball in the arm during the Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Who was Nelson? Horatio Nelson, Viscount Nelson of the Nile and Burnham Thorpe, in full, is one of Britain's greatest heroes. He sits atop his column revered as a national icon. Many stories have been written about him; many true, many false and most embellished in some way. He was a flawed and controversial hero. He possessed the moxie and the leadership, but lacked the constitution. He was weak and sickly and he disobeyed orders. But he was charismatic, lucky, and a tactical genius who inspired great loyalty. Nelson's Love Life While Horatio was a hero on the battlefield, he didn't uphold quite the same reputation in his personal affairs. His love life was spectacular but it was hardly was a gentleman or lady would call honourable. He met his wife Frances, or ‘dearest Fanny' as he called her, at the age of 27 when he was stationed in the West Indies. While The Agamemnon was in the Mediterranean, Horatio met the British Ambassador to Naples, Sir William Hamilton, and his wife Emma. Emma struck a cord with Horatio, and he was smitten. After the battle of the Nile Nelson returned to Naples and immediately took up relations with Emma Hamilton. The two became inseparable as he once again fell head over heels in love. Their affair quickly became public knowledge and it both outraged and fascinated polite society. When they returned to England in 1800 Emma his mistress, and Fanny, his wife met for the first time. It is safe to say that they did not hit it off. Emma called Fanny a 'vile Tom Tit', and 'a very wicked, artful woman'. During the argument Horatio sided with Emma. He never saw Fanny again. Before setting off for the battle of Trafalgar Nelson and Emma attended communion together and in an informal ceremony they exchanged betrothal rings. They were as good as married, except in the eyes of the law. Things did not turn out well. Nelson was killed at the battle on October 21st, 1905 from a gunshot wound. Spelcirkeln har spelat ännu ett obskyrt och relativt okänt indiespel. Denna gång det franska och enmansutvecklade NaissanceE - ett abstrakt walking sim med plattformande och pusslande, som liknar en hel del annat i populärkulturen men samtidigt ändå inte. Oliver, Leo och Alex pratar även andra spel, som vanligt. För vi gillar ju att prata spel här i Spelcirkeln, till skillnad från andra spelpoddar i Sverige. Ehh.. (Chinese) Supreme Master Qing Hai tells a story about a man living in Buddha’s time who had no eyes, ears, nose or tongue. What merits did he earn to be born into a wealthy and noble family? And what bad karma had caused him to be born without five sense organs? Supreme Master points out that it’s not easy for us to be a good man or to keep our level of integrity and cleanness in this world. We are sometimes subject to bad influences, frustrations and threats which may lead to our loss of moralities. ...

A mother and her inspiring six-year-old son who was born with a gap in his face is raising awareness of the treatment of people with facial differences. Christian Buchanan from Woodbury, Tennessee, was born with Tessier cleft lip and palate, a rare condition which has only been documented 60 times in medical history. In today's episode of The Sales Evangelist, we discuss the immediate steps you can take to begin growing your influence. Whether you are in sales or not, everyone, at one time or another, needs to increase their influence. I'm reminded of a coworker of mine who really knew how to connect with people. Tom had that ability to influence others. He just understood people and prospects and he knew how to speak to them. He could point out potential problems before they became problems. As such, when he spoke, his clients listened. He was respected. My guest today, Stacey Hanke, is here to talk about how we, like Tom, can grow our influence. [00:01] Stacey is the author of two books, a Certified Speaking Professional, and CEO of StaceyHanke, Inc. Stacey and her team work with directors, to C-Suite, and with sales professionals to make them more aware of the level of influence they really have versus they level of influence they believe they have. They accomplish this with keynotes, with mentoring, and through workshops. They increase awareness by giving practical how-to advice so their clients know how to use both verbal and non-verbal methods of influence every day of the week. [03:25] INFLUENCE: WHAT IT IS AND WHAT IT ISN'T Stacey has worked with a lot of individuals and organizations over the past 16 years. And though she sees it happen quite often, Stacey believes that influence is not something that you should turn on and off. For example, you've got a high stakes phone conversation, meeting or sales pitch and you decide to ‘turn it on.' There's nothing authentic about that. There's no integrity to it. [04:46] Influence is when your verbal and non-verbal communication remain consistent at all times and in all situations. It is congruent with your priorities and purposes. Influence is having the ability to move people to take action long after the interaction has occurred. It takes discipline and hard work. It is hard because we often get caught up with worrying about how we are perceived. Will they like me? Am I going to say the right thing? Switch your thinking. What is important to my client? What is their experience with the topic? Why is this conversation happening? To really drive home the value of your product or your service – whatever you're trying to influence the person to act on – it first has to resonate with the client. [05:36] So, be genuine. Stacey recently helped a client to realize that he was putting more time into marketing materials and PowerPoint slides than into the actual delivery of the product. It is not the experience his clients were looking for. [06:46] FEEDBACK: WHY YOU NEED IT. As a sales rep, one of the first steps to increase your influence is to ask for real feedback. You have to plan for it and ask for it. Ask someone who you can count on to tell you the truth to listen to you as you practice. Ask them to listen, pay attention and give you feedback. When you can prepare in this way, the person providing the feedback is more likely to be direct and constructive with their comments. We don't need to be told how great we are. We have to figure out our weaknesses in order to grow. It takes discipline to handle feedback and even more discipline to act on it. Don't sabotage yourself by asking a subordinate or someone who is likely to tell you what you want to hear, instead of what you need to hear. Put your pride aside. Strive for honest answers. [07:39] Stacey has encountered many in her workshops who are hesitant to pursue feedback. She attributes this to the stigma that surrounds feedback as meaning you've done something wrong. Feedback instead means that you are already doing well. You wouldn't be in the position you are in if you didn't know what you were doing. Feedback provides opportunity to become even better. It encourages constant growth. [09:41] LEADERSHIP In a study conducted by Joseph Folkman of over 51,000 leaders, it was realized that leaders who frequently ask for feedback rank in the top 86% for leadership effectiveness. On the other hand, leaders who rank in the bottom 15% for leadership effectiveness are in the bottom 10% when it comes to asking for feedback. [10:20] So how does this translate to working with a prospect? Stacey reaches out to her clients every three or six months to find out what has been working for them during that time. She frequently asks her clients why they continue to work with her team. What keeps them coming back? Then she flips the coin. What can her team do to make things easier? How can they provide more value on a long-term basis? This allows the client to tell you how best to upsell them by letting you know what other services they might want or need. Your clients can disappear at any point but if you deliver the value that you promise and you truly care about your clients, then the ability to upsell based on their feedback provides a service to them. [11:31] Being influential is not the same as being manipulative. The more you practice asking for, setting up, receiving, and dealing with feedback, the more you'll start to crave it. It sounds crazy but sometimes the feedback is completely different from how you felt during the conversation or how you thought you came across. Sometimes feedback can be harsh. But the toughest feedback often comes during periods of growth or transition. You might hate it at the time but it will help you grow. [13:42] GET COMFORTABLE WITH BECOMING UNCOMFORTABLE Feedback can be hard to embrace if it requires a change that takes us out of our comfort zone. Make feedback common practice. You can apply it to everything in life. The more uncomfortable you get, the faster you grow. Once you get over the hurdles, once you stop hitting your knees every time, you will start to see improvement. Staying in our comfort zone only makes us lazy. Resting on our laurels or believing that we already know everything comes across in our performance. When you are feeling strong and landing deals, Stacey says that is the time to feel uncomfortable. Work hard even when times aren't tough. Imagine going to the gym only when you want to lose weight. It isn't going to last. It is too painful. Instead, be consistent to get consistent results. [17:09] Talk to your clients like you would talk to a friend. They don't need somebody pushing a product down their throat. They want someone who is trying to meet their needs so ask how you can do that for them. What is the best way to communicate with them? How frequently do they want to hear from you? When can you call or email them next? To have more influence from a personal standpoint, try seeing yourself as your audience does. Record yourself on your phone. The level of awareness that develops from observing your own verbal and non-verbal cues can be truly eye-opening. Everything about our behavior translates into the experience that people have with us. Influence doesn't happen during the conversation. It happens after the fact. Focus on your thoughts. [20:26] NO EYES? NO TALK. Focus your eyes on a single point and practice as if you are speaking to individuals there. When you focus your eyes, you become focused in your thoughts. When you lose focus on the point, you will find that you also lose your train of thought. Make every interaction purposeful. When you are trying to connect with someone, only speak to them when you can see their eyes. Make it a meaningful conversation. Anytime you need to look away, stop talking. It creates trust. Without trust, nothing else matters. You save time when you stay focused and speak less. [22:30] Many of us forget that the people we are trying to influence may not be as excited about our years of experience or about our product as we are. If you only have two or five minutes with a client, think about how to provide the greatest value in the shortest time. Make it memorable for them. They don't have to say ‘yes' today but you can increase their interest today. Let them know how to reach you tomorrow. [24:31] CONSISTENCY If you want to use social media to increase your influence, be sure to be consistent among the platforms. Stacey cites the common problem of using cellphones to send emails, namely, that disclaimer at the bottom to ‘please forgive any grammatical errors.' Why would you ask a potential client to do that? Influence comes through with everything we do. Be sure your messages are consistent. Don't bash other companies. Remember that your tone of voice does not convey to the written word. Avoid the risk of coming across as unprofessional. Think before you post. Your reputation is on everything that you do. You choose the reputation that you want people to have of you. Starting off 2019, we take a spotlight on New York City's DJ PlayPlay. PlayPlay initially reached out to us for an opportunity to do a guest mix; our first listen to their productions and mixes ended with an immediate "Yes, absolutely feature this work". Mixes and productions featuring samples of known work intermixed with genre bending beats gave hint towards a deeper drive in PlayPlay's music. The real delicacy of an artist's drive like that of PlayPlay's comes from the diverse angles to which they approach understanding music: academia and teaching of the art of DJing, research in oppressed communities and dance music, activism and expansion of female and gender non-conforming artists, an expansive multi-genre understanding of music, and residency at Queen's Flux Factory where these factors are utilized to instill an informed approach to their mixes. In addition to their current residency at Flux Factory, you can find PlayPlay's work on Knightwerk records, Worst Behavior, and Cybersonic LA. We thank PlayPlay not only for their wonderful mix, but for their depth in approach to the art of music and culture itself. These elements are deeply understood by this artist and presented in a clear, beautiful, and intricate manner. In breaking news, Andy and Dave discuss the Dota 2 competition between the Open AI Five team of AIs and a top (99.95th percentile) human team, where the humans won one game in a series of three; the Pentagon signs a $885M AI contract with Booz Allen; MIT builds Cheetah 3, a “blind” robot that has no visual sensors but can climb stairs and maneuver in a space with obstacles; Tencent Machine Learning trains AlexNet in just 4 minutes on ImageNet (breaking the previous record of 11 minutes); researchers at MIT Media Lab have developed a machine-learning model to perceive human emotions; and the 2018 Conference on Uncertainty in AI (UAI) may have been held 7-10 August in Monterey, CA – we’re not certain (but what is certain is that Dave will never tire of these jokes). In other news, IBM Watson reportedly recommended cancer treatments that were “unsafe and incorrect, and Amazon’s Rekognition software incorrectly identifies 28 lawmakers as crime suspects, about which Andy and Dave yet again highlight the dangerous gap in AI between expectations and reality. Lipton (CMU) and Steinhardt (Standford) identify “troubling trends” in machine learning research and scientific scholarship. The Institute for Theoretical Physics in Zurich describes SciNet, a neural network that can discover physical concepts (such as the motion of a damped pendulum). A paper by Kott and Perconti makes an empirical assessment of forecasting military technology on the 20-30 year horizon, and finds the forecasts are surprisingly accurate (65-87%). "Elements of Statistical Learning Data Mining, Inference, and Prediction," is available online. Andy recommends the Ellison classic story, I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream, and finally, a video by Percy Liang at Stanford discusses ways of evaluating machine learning for AI.

Johnny Corporate - Sunday Shoutin' (Robosonic Rework) [Defected] Biography: In a now long forgotten world, many generations ago, a bird like shape emerged from wooded dark- ness, floating and fluttering, drifting and dreaming. Backlit by a bright glow of iridescent light, the undecipherable form wore a dazzling golden mask. Its long beak swooped down like an inverted horn and since then, people have referred to the mythical being simply as Claptone. Years spending wandering medieval landscapes have informed Claptone’s view of the world, experi- encing both magical mystery and muted melancholy he enchanted onlookers with occult instruments and beguiling sounds. Forever surrounded by a sense of intrigue, the world soon cottoned on to the elusive yet enchanting musical powers of this otherworldly beast. The results are that today his sha- manistic sonic powers take him all around the world. Whilst Claptone has continued to roam in his own circles, 2012AD proved to be a year dominated by his infectious ‘Cream’ track. It became an immediate hit, topping new world charts at Beatport and RA, whilst the sonic conjuring of the ‘Night On Fire’ EP also lured all those who heard it, with the result another Top 20 hit. But that’s not all, for the creativity flows freely in our hero, and his ‘Another Night’ also proved to be just as successful on the dancefloor. Deep and woozy, the Claptone sound pairs theatre with tragedy, feel good vibes with acute melancholia and imbues each groove with a Rhodes laced funk, an organic string hook and myriad earthy elements. Up to the present day, Claptone releases have been birthed on Germany’s influential Exploited label, picking up props from the likes of Pete Tong, DJ Sneak, Soul Clap, DJ Hell, Jesse Rose, A-Trak along the way. Who or whatever Claptone is, it is alive, with a life of its own, evolving and revolving in equal measure, exploring new sounds naturally and forever taking inspiration from long gone and occult worlds. So far, esteemed and influential dancefloors at clubs in Berlin, London, Paris, Melbourne, Shanghai, New York and many others around the world have fallen under the sonic spell of this secretive alche- mist. The future is unpredictable for Claptone, but a new release ‘Wrong’ including the track ‘No Eyes’ with the inimitable JAW from French funsters dOP is on the horizon. Beyond that, your guess is as good as ours... exploitedghetto.de // facebook.com/claptone.official // label contact: info@exploitedghetto.de // press contact: press@claptone.com

Nocturnes 3.0 Third and most probably last instalment of the Nocturnes series. Keeping up with the nightly vibe with some cheeky edits and my first original mash-up with “It’s You I Touch”. If you feel like having a laugh scroll to 58:46.. The added sample is priceless.. Best way I can describe the final set is as an attempt to blend Deep with Progressive house with a NYC undercurrent vibe. Nocturnes 3.0 fits snuggly in the series and I believe it is a tidy way to wrap it up. Playlist: 2013 It’s You I Touch [Xtian Mash-Up Original Mix vs Soda Panorama Bar]. Buraq & Patrick Podage and FCL 2013 Leaves Falling (Mario Basanov Dub). Kruse & Nuernberg feat Nathalie Claude 2013 Sky In Your Eyes (Original Mix). Betoko 2013 Going Crazy (Original Vocal Mix). Ran Salman 2010 Cooler Couleur (Voyou Remix). Crookers feat. Yelle 2012 Start Again (Teenage Mutants Remix). Grass Is Greener 2013 No Eyes (Original Mix). Claptone feat Jaw 2013 Follow The Step (Original vs. Kink Mix). Rachel Row 2013 Get Serious (Original Mix). Def Mike 2013 Black Room Boy (Maor's Deep Room Mix) [Xtian Get Connected Edit feat. Kev Kruz]. Above & Beyond 2012 Just a Game (Let’s Play) (Lucas Remix) [Xtian To The Underground Edit feat. Kev Kruz]. The Stereo Fighterz feat. Suzanne 2012 All Cats Are Grey (Original Mix) [Xtian Love Feeling High Edit feat. Ed Weathers]. DJ Le Roi 2013 Falling (Full Vocal Mix). Matthias Vogt feat. Andrew Herbertson 2012 Spectra (Madloch, Yunta & Beat Syndrome Remix). Mauro Norti and Travis MacDonald feat. Ashley Benjamin 2013 Moon (Original Mix). HVOB Highlights Bar “Cooler Couleur », which is the only weak track and here because of the french accent sample, all tracks in the playlist are worth running to Beatport and Traxsource and paying for the original versions. “It’s You I Touch” is my first real attempt at a mash-up. "Touch" by Buraq & Patrick Podage vs. "It’s You" by FCL. I hope someone with real talent will pick up what is a good idea and make it great… Because those 2 tracks are begging for it. ”Leaves Falling” progressive trancy track with a Balearic tinge. It reminds me of early Chicane and Café del mar. “Sky in Your Eyes” you will recognize the main pads line and it will take you back! “Going Crazy” and “Start Again”, two solid tunes, with great male vocals and perfection of a bass line.. “No Eyes” from Claptone, with “Follow The Step”, the real gem of the set. I love the bass line, the production is beyond reproach, deep, sexy, progressive… Into “Follow The Step”, which was the discovery of the Miami Winter Music Conference (WMC), I am not sure I am giving the tune the credit it deserves and I will came back to it further down the road. Fairly satisfied with my 2 edits of “Black Room Boy” and “Let’s Play” giving them the NYC remix treatment with a Kev Cruz sample I hope put to good use. “All Cats Are Grey”, if you are an adult check the tune (starting at 58:46) you will have a laugh.. I stumbled on the Ed Weather sample a few months ago.. Priceless.. Finishing with "Spectra" and "Moon", 2 fantastic progressive gems... I may start the following progressive mix with "Spectra" to give the tune a bit more exposure. Not quite sure where I will go next, most probably soulful or if I have the time I will prepare an edit set for some freinds of mine dropping in over the weekend.. We shall see. In the meantime.. Enjoy Xtian
