Duran, a socialist sympathizer but not a communist, was under intense CIA surveillance through wiretaps and cameras, and was viewed as a potential future asset due to her past affair with a Cuban diplomat.The CIA's Mexico City station chief, Winston Scott, bypasses protocol and uses his covert LITEMPO network—high-level Mexican officials on CIA payroll—to order Duran's arrest via the brutal DFS secret police. We are coming to the end of the Sylvia Odio story. In episode 6 we finish up this min-series on Sylvia Odio,  by picking up the story  in 1976. Amid intense public pressure and shocking revelations about clandestine intelligence activities from the 1960s, Congress formed the House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) to reinvestigate the assassinations of President Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. A key figure in this effort was investigator Gaeton Fonzi, who examined the FBI's original files and the Warren Commission's cursory dismissal of Sylvia Odio's testimony, concluding that the incident "absolutely cries conspiracy." The HSCA vowed a thorough inquiry, reaching out to Sylvia, her family, her doctors, and the anti-Castro mercenaries previously cited to discredit her. Sylvia initially responded with profound distrust, feeling exploited by the Warren Commission, which she believed had no interest in her story. However, after establishing trust, she consented to provide sworn testimony in a private executive session, marking a significant shift from her prior experiences.The committee began by thoroughly debunking the Warren Commission's alibi, which rested on the unreliable claims of anti-Castro mercenary Loran Hall. Under oath, Hall confessed his story was fabricated, while his alleged associates, Lawrence Howard and William Seymour, denied any connection to Odio. Critically, the HSCA confirmed through records that Seymour was employed in Florida throughout September 1963, rendering his presence in Dallas impossible. The report lambasted the FBI's identification methods as deeply flawed and hastily concluded, affirming that the visitors were not Hall, Howard, or Seymour, and exposing the Warren Commission's dependence on a baseless narrative to close the case prematurely.To establish Odio's reliability, the HSCA pursued pre-assassination evidence for corroboration. Sylvia's sister Annie submitted a sworn affidavit verifying the late September visit by two Latinos and an American, and recalling Sylvia's distraught cries of "Leon did it!" upon seeing Oswald on TV during the assassination coverage. Psychiatrist Dr. Burton Einspruch, under oath, described Odio as truthful and cooperative, attributing her 1963 distress to real-life hardships rather than delusions, and confirmed she had recounted the encounter in therapy sessions before November 22. A letter from her father, Amador Odio, penned from a Cuban prison in December 1963, cautioned her about these self-proclaimed "friends," further solidifying the event's timeline and authenticity.Weighing the evidence—including the invalidated alibis, Annie's and Dr. Einspruch's testimonies, and Amador's letter—the HSCA's final report delivered a stunning verdict: Sylvia Odio's account was "essentially credible," with a "strong probability" that one of the men was or resembled Lee Harvey Oswald. This governmental acknowledgment challenged the lone gunman theory, suggesting Oswald or an impersonator was deliberately linking himself to anti-Castro militants weeks before Dallas, possibly to fabricate ties implicating Cuban exiles in the plot. While unable to fully decipher the visit's purpose, the findings opened a chasm of intrigue regarding intelligence machinations and the assassination's deeper truths, forever altering historical perspectives.

Terrified for their lives and their parents still imprisoned in Cuba, the sisters swore they would never speak of it. But secrets that big refuse to stay buried. Through a tangled Dallas grapevine the story reached the FBI, and the authorities came knocking.What followed became one of the Warren Commission's most explosive and embarrassing chapters. Sylvia proved to be a reluctant yet ironclad witness—consistent under oath, never chasing the spotlight. Her account placed Oswald with anti-Castro extremists in late September 1963, a detail that would demolish the “lone nut” narrative. The Commission knew it was radioactive. Their only defense was a tightly constructed timeline claiming Oswald was already on a bus to Mexico City. Case closed… or so they thought.Desperate for an explanation, the FBI produced Loran Hall, a colorful soldier of fortune who conveniently claimed he and two companions—one who supposedly resembled Oswald—had visited Odio's apartment instead. The Warren Report rushed this unverified story into print, literally admitting the FBI hadn't finished checking it. Then the truth unraveled at lightning speed: Hall's companions denied the visit, employment records proved one was in Florida the entire month, and Hall himself retracted everything. When the FBI showed Sylvia and Annie photos of the supposed visitors, both sisters instantly rejected them. None of the men matched.Yet the Warren Commission published its conclusions anyway, dismissing one of its strongest witnesses as “mistaken.” For years the Odio incident lay buried in the 26 volumes—until the government quietly admitted the Commission had gotten it wrong. This is the story of how the official investigation confronted devastating evidence of conspiracy, found a tidy lie to bury it, and watched that lie collapse before the ink was even dry. The proof of the plot, as researchers have called it, was swept under the rug… but it never really went away.

In our last episode, we traced Sylvia Odio's fall from Cuban aristocracy—wealthy, U.S.-educated, and immersed in high society—to a destitute exile after her parents, Amador and Sarah, funneled their fortune into the anti-Castro underground. Their arrest and imprisonment by Fidel Castro in October 1961 devastated the family and set Sylvia on a path of heartbreak.Today we follow her survival in the aftermath. Abandoned by her husband in Puerto Rico, Sylvia suffered a shattering emotional breakdown and terrifying fainting spells. With help from her sisters in Dallas and a generous local benefactor, Lucille Connell, she relocated in March 1963 and found psychiatric care under Dr. Burton Einspruch, who later called her truthful, cooperative, and brilliant under oath.This episode builds the critical backdrop for one of the most important pre-assassination sightings of Lee Harvey Oswald. We examine Sylvia's fragile mental state, her complicated new life in Dallas, the people around her, and we travel bacl to  the exact apartment where history was about to knock. Finally we find ourselves  right there when  the knock on the door occurs. Three strangers stood in Sylvia Odio's lighted vestibule. Two Cubans calling themselves Leopoldo and Angelo claimed to be members of JURE, the anti-Castro group her own parents had helped build. With them was a quiet, pale American they introduced as “Leon Oswald.” They knew intimate details about Sylvia's imprisoned father and asked her to help raise money for arms. She turned them down. As they drove away in a red car, Sylvia was left uneasy—but she had no idea how deeply this brief encounter was about to haunt her.

Paul Abbott has been researching the assassination of President Kennedy for over thirty years, his book "Death To Justice" is about the shooting of Lee Harvey Oswald by Jack Ruby. This discussion will look at Paul's trip to Dallas for the JFK conferences that are held every year and we will also be discussing Jack Ruby and some of the holes in the official narrative of how Ruby gained access to the basement.

Episode 310 is the twenty-second episode on  the Tippit  murder and  very well may be our final  episode of  this  mini-series. Of all the mini-series we have produced , this one may have been the most illuminating when it comes to solving the crime...of who killed President John F. Kennedy.  In this final episode on Tippit,  we explore, one more layer down in the depths of Oak Cliff, the chance that there was a second police car there on the scene...at the moment that Tippit was murdered. That the event  at 10th and Patton was more than random and  likely  involved more than one officer.  We do that today through the eyes and ears of Lad Holan, the son of Doris Holan. Both were present as witnesses  that day in Dallas and both had material roles as witnesses in this tragic event. Lad is interviewed by Researcher Gavan McMahon about his recollections on that day and the recollections of his mother Doris Holan who clearly saw the second vehicle. Lad addresses a missing piece of film footage that likely was his mother. Lad was shown that film footage by researcher Dale Meyers. Footage that Lad believes contained portions showing his mother speaking and describing the car in the driveway and alley way BEHIND the house on 10th street. A vantage point that she could clearly see from the second floor window of her apartment at 113 1/2 Patton Avenue.... but the footage has disappeared. Meyers has, apparently,  never made it publicly available for scrutiny.So, what are we to believe?  This isn't just a discrepancy; it's a profound contradiction at the heart of the case. THE FUNERALS AND MARGUERITE'S ERRATIC BEHAVIOR Colleague Paul Gregory. This segment contrasts the global mourning for President Kennedy with the lonely burial of Lee Harvey Oswald at Rose Hill, where reporters served as pallbearers. Marina Oswald was in a daze, emotionally devastated by watching Jackie Kennedy and the state funeral on television. Meanwhile, Marguerite Oswald became increasingly difficult, arguing over trivialities and insisting her son was an innocent hero and intelligence agent. Her erratic behavior and refusal to accept facts caused significant friction with the Secret Service agents protecting them. The Gregory family spent Thanksgiving in a "fog," discussing Marguerite's instability, a detail Paul notes was largely absent from the official Warren Report despite its significance in understanding the family dynamic. PROTECTING THE FAMILY AND THE BACKYARD PHOTOGRAPH Colleague Paul Gregory. Following the assassination, Oswald's mother, Marguerite, contacted Pete Gregory seeking shelter for herself and Marina. Petecoordinated with the Secret Service to move the women to a hotel at Six Flags to protect them from the press and facilitate interrogation. Authorities were particularly focused on a photo of Oswald holding a rifle; Marina initially hesitated to admit she took it, fearing legal consequences. Pete Gregory helped bridge the trust gap between Marina and the Secret Service. The situation escalated when the family learned Lee Harvey Oswald had been shot. Marguerite and Marina were taken to Parkland Hospital to view his body, after which Marguerite began demanding he be buried in Arlington National Cemetery. NUMBER 5

MEETING LEE HARVEY OSWALD AND THE SEARCH FOR EMPLOYMENT Colleague Paul Gregory. This segment traces the relationship back to June 1962, when Pete Gregory first met Lee Harvey Oswald. Oswald, seeking employment that utilized his Russian language skills rather than manual labor, was referred to Pete for a language evaluation. Pete wrote a letter vouching for Oswald's fluency, though he noted Oswald was not a native speaker. Oswaldwas bitter about working as a welder for low wages and hoped to avoid the "blue-collar trap." The segment also introduces the first meeting between Paul and the Oswalds at Robert Oswald's home, where Paul observed Lee's poor grammar despite his fluency. Last year in 2024, we presented a bonus episode, recorded live at the Texas Theater in Dallas, Texas with Ernie Kovacs award winner, Gerald Casale from Devo at VideoFest. This year, we'd like to present this year's VideoFest's Ernie Kovacs Award recipient, comedian Fred Armisen. This is just one of the ways we keep the legacy of both Ernie and Edie Adams going and frankly, it's really a major impetus for this podcast itself. How better to keep someone's legacy alive than via the children of those who knew them best, their children? Recorded on November 23, in the very same theater where Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested for the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, exactly 62 years prior, this episode exists only because of one person and we wanted to thank Dev Shapiro of Selig News for his recording. You see, we recorded this directly from the sound board for ideal sound quality but when we got the digital files, they were corrupted and unusable. Thankfully, it was Dev to the rescue and while Dev was not recording directly from the sound board, I think we can all forgive the minor audio issues because well, he saved our bacon by just being there. Bestselling author and noted historian Mark Shaw returns to Commonwealth Club World Affairs to discuss his latest research and his newest book. They strengthen his conclusion that New Orleans mafia don Carlos Marcello was the point person pulling the strings behind the murders of JFK and famed journalist Dorothy Kilgallen. And, for the first time, he also links Marcello to the murder of Robert Kennedy. In his previous books, Shaw established the connections between Marcello, Oswald, Ruby and Kilgallen and Marcello's use of Kilgallen's lover to silence her before she could expose Marcello's involvement in the JFK assassination. In his latest book, Abuse of Power, Shaw lays out compelling evidence that Marcello's pattern of using patsies to exact his revenge culminated in his setting Sirhan Sirhan up to take the fall for the assassination of RFK on June 6, 1968.  Shaw's new research includes his examination of the JFK assassination records recently released by the federal government. In those files is a December 1985 FBI transcript in which Carlos Marcello was taped “confessing” to his role in JFK's death: “Yeah, I had the son of a b---h killed. I'm glad I did. I wish I could have done it myself.”  Shaw investigates whether Marcello decided on a similar approach when it became clear in early 1968 that RFK could become president. Shaw says that since Robert Kennedy, as attorney general, had ordered Marcello deported in April 1961, charging him with racketeering, Marcello had no intention of allowing RFK to get in his way again and so had Bobby killed.  Shaw alleges that Marcello used his “associate,” mobster Mickey Cohen, who controlled the Southern California racetracks, including Santa Anita, and knew the layout of the Ambassador Hotel where RFK was killed, to “recruit” 24-year-old Sirhan just as the mafia don had recruited Lee Harvey Oswald to assassinate JFK. Evidence for Shaw's allegation is a never-before-published, eyewitness, video-taped account from John Shear, a celebrated paddock captain at Santa Anita Racetrack. He had hired Sirhan to work as a “hot walker” at the racetrack and considered him “easily manipulated.”  Shortly before RFK was killed, Shear noticed that Sirhan was all dressed up, had money and was hanging around nearby Hollywood Park Racetrack with “two hoodlums” despite being poorly paid and having gambling debts. Shaw says that shortly after RFK's murder, it was Shear who first identified Sirhan for the LAPD and the FBI from the photo of Sirhan being shown on TV—but Shear was never contacted by either the LAPD or the FBI about Sirhan, pointing to a cover up.  Then, just as twice before regarding JFK's and Kilgallen's deaths, the trail of evidence quickly and suspiciously went cold. On the morning of November 22, 1963 Vinson boarded a flight at Andrews Air Force Base bound for Lowry Airforce Base in  Colorado.  He was hitching a ride to his duty station at Ent Air Force Base and the plane was empty with the exception of Sergeant Vinson, the pilot and the copilot. Shortly after take off, the crew announced president Kennedy's shooting in Dallas and the plane made an immediate detour south. It was not long before they were over Dallas, a city that Vinson recognized as he peered out the window. They would soon land on a sandy strip of land along the Trinity River in Dallas, and without shutting down the aircraft engines, would take on two passengers. From there they would fly to Roswell Air Force Base in New Mexico. The purported landing area would have put the plane close to  Oak Cliff.  One of the men who boarded in Dallas was Latino. The other was a taller Caucasian man. The pilots and the two men would hastily depart the aircraft upon landing at Roswell. A departure from the original flight plan, Vinson was forced to stay overnight at Roswell and catch a plane the next day to Colorado. But that night he would see pictures of Lee Harvey Oswald on television and feel certain that one of the passengers on the plane, the Caucasian, bore a striking resemblance  to Oswald. Episode 303 is the sixteenth episode of our mini-series on the Tippit murder.  David Belin, the celebrated Warren Commission attorney called  it the "Rosetta Stone" of the JFK assassination. In  this sixteenth  episode, we tell the story of the Dallas police squad car appearing in front of Oswald's rooming house right at about 1:00PM as he was changing and about to exit. The car approached slowly, honked twice and then proceeded slowly away. This was clearly observed by housekeeper Earlene Roberts.  From her window, she clearly saw a cruiser with two uniformed police officers contained in it. And she clearly identified it as car 207 in three separate documents including two FBI interviews in the first week after the assassination with  the first occurring on November 23rd and the second occurring on November 29th. Paul Gregory argues that Lee Harvey Oswald's primary motive was a profound belief that he was special and destined for greatness, fostered by his mother. Gregory insists Oswald is often underestimated, highlighting his achievements as a master manipulator who deceived the Soviets and planned the General Walker assassination attempt. A secondary but major factor was Marina, who constantly scorned his intelligence and manhood, making him feel worthless. Oswald's trial was meant to be his glorious moment to demonstrate his brilliance to the world and Marina. Paul Gregory discusses his book, The Oswalds, focusing on his father, Pete Gregory, a Russian-speaking oil engineer. On November 22, 1963, Pete was near the Texas Hotel in Fort Worth when President Kennedy departed. Later that afternoon, Paul, a student in Oklahoma, learned the president had been shot and watched the news. When the bruised suspect was brought in on television, Paul immediately recognized him, declaring he knew that guy. Paul was picked up the next morning for interrogation by the Secret Service and local police due to his association with Lee Harvey Oswald. Guest: Paul Gregory. 1963

Paul Gregory recounts how his father, Pete Gregory, first met Lee Harvey Oswald in June 1962 after being contacted by the Texas Employment Office. Oswald, recently returned from three years in Minsk, sought work utilizing his Russian language skills. Pete, a fluent Russian speaker, tested Lee and, finding his Russian fluent but grammatically poor, wrote a letter supporting him. Later, Paul met Lee and Marina and proposed taking Russian lessons from Marina to practice with a native speaker. The Oswalds were very poor, living off Lee's tight $56 weekly earnings. Marina eventually earned $35 for the lessons, which she considered a fantastically large amount of money. Guest: Paul Gregory.

Paul Gregory reveals that in April 1963, Lee Harvey Oswald, agitated and shaken, confessed to Marina that he attempted to assassinate General Edwin Walker in Dallas. Marina found a note giving her directions if he failed to return. Though she realized he was deeply disturbed, she kept the event secret until the Warren Commission. Shortly after, Oswald moved to New Orleans, seeking to build credentials as a "radical operative" for Fidel Castro, hoping to secure a Cuban visa that would lead to a Soviet visa. Paul Gregory notes that despite his growing delusions, there was absolutely no indication whatsoever that he was planning to assassinate the president of the United States at this time. Paul Gregory chronicles Lee Harvey Oswald's burial at Rose Hill, which was quiet, with reporters carrying the coffin. Marina, in a daze, performed Russian rituals when viewing the body and was deeply impacted by watching the Kennedy funeral on television. Margarite's difficulty was evident as she persistently asserted her dead son was innocent, claiming he was a hero and clashing openly with Secret Service agents, who grew exasperated knowing he was guilty. Margarite was living in a fantasy world, later claiming agents wanted to murder her. Pete Gregory maintained strict secrecy regarding the women's location, even from the FBI.
