Sitting at a free desk in the second-floor retail advertising department of the Dallas Morning News, the 52-year-old nightclub owner spent his morning writing out longhand copy for his weekend advertisements, completely oblivious to the fateful motorcade scheduled to pass just blocks away. When employees from the newspaper  burst into the room with the devastating news that shots had been fired, Ruby sat holding the morning paper in stunned disbelief. He was pale, ashen, and speechless—the loudest man in Dallas suddenly rendered completely silent as his city descended into chaos.As the afternoon unfolded, a mysterious gap of nearly forty minutes emerged between his departure from the newspaper office and his arrival back at the Carousel Club. This segment of his day remains one of the most hotly contested chapters in assassination lore. A respected national reporter who knew Ruby well, Seth Kantor, swore under oath that he spoke with Ruby at Parkland Hospital at 1:30 PM, where a frantic Ruby asked him whether he should close his clubs in mourning. While the Warren Commission brushed this encounter aside to protect their narrow timeline, years later the House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) and even the Commission's own staff attorneys would admit their skepticism was likely misplaced. This gap is further complicated by the claims of a local housewife who also reported seeing Ruby at Parkland, only to receive chilling, anonymous telephone calls warning her to keep her mouth shut.Simultaneously, Ruby became obsessively hyper-focused on a full-page, black-bordered advertisement in that morning's paper. This obsessive sensitivity to his heritage eventually drove him that evening to slip into the back of Temple Shearith Israel for a solemn memorial service, standing afterward awkwardly  while making small talk over coffee with members of the congregation.But the day was far from over. Determined to position himself at the center of the action, Ruby shut down his clubs and headed to the Dallas Police Headquarters, carrying sandwiches for the officers and blending in with reporters by carrying a notebook. Just before midnight, he managed to slip unnoticed into the basement assembly room for a packed press conference showing Lee Harvey Oswald to the world. It was there, standing at the back of the room, that Jack Ruby stepped into history by speaking up to correct District Attorney Henry Wade on the exact name of Oswald's political group: the Fair Play for Cuba Committee. Hour by hour, from writing advertising copy to standing inches away from the accused assassin, we trace the well  documented and deeply haunting footsteps of Jack Ruby on the longest day of his life.

When Jack tried to fire Jada and tear up her high-priced contract, the union intervened as a referee, forcing a miserable, cash-strapped Jack to endure her presence on his runway for three tense months. The friction peaked in late October 1963 when a terrified Jada marched into a Dallas courthouse and secured a formal peace bond to protect herself from Jack's notorious history of physical violence.Finally, we unravel the bizarre, heavily debated events of November 22, 1963. We explore Jack's frantic, jealous phone calls on the morning of the assassination to local sports writers, warning them to stay away from the "evil" Jada. We also document her highly unusual mid-morning car accident near Texas Instruments on Lemon Avenue, where her Cadillac struck a pedestrian just hours before the president's motorcade entered Dealey Plaza. On August 8, 1959, Jack Ruby boarded a plane to Havana, embarking on what he would spend the rest of his life claiming was a simple, eight-day vacation to visit his close friend, syndicate gambler Lewis McWillie. But official Cuban immigration cards, flight manifests, bank records, and the memories of eye-witnesses at the famous Tropicana casino paint a far more complex and troubling picture. Jack wasn't just on vacation; he was traveling back and forth to the island, even making a mysterious, unexplained one-day round trip to Miami. Decades later, congressional investigators would look at this erratic, secret itinerary and draw a chilling inference: that the "Dallas strip king" was serving, at a very minimum, as a courier for international gambling interests desperately trying to move their cash and assets out of the reach of Fidel Castro's newly installed revolutionary government.We also dig into the official paper trail of Jack's underworld associations and his bizarre relationship with federal law enforcement. Long before his fateful moment in the Dallas police basement, the FBI's Dallas office recognized his proximity to the criminal element and attempted to cultivate him as a potential criminal informant. We also look at the terrifying jailhouse conversation recalled by carousel comedian Wally Weston, where a shaken, imprisoned Ruby whispered that the authorities were finally going to "find out about Cuba... the guns... and everything."Finally, we examine the shocking moment on the night of November 22, 1963, in a crowded hallway at Dallas Police Headquarters. On November 24, 1963, Jack Ruby stepped out of the shadows of a crowded Dallas police basement and shot Lee Harvey Oswald live on national television, silencing the accused assassin of President John F. Kennedy forever. In a single moment, Ruby opened a canyon of doubt and conspiracy that has never closed, cementing himself as one of the most mysterious and controversial figures in modern history. To the public, he was a Dallas strip club owner and midnight hustler, a man of wild and irreconcilable contradictions who could beat a patron into the concrete  one moment, and weep over a sad news story, buy groceries for a struggling mother, or cook tender lamb chops for his beloved dogs the next. But who was the man beneath the dark fedora? In this first episode of our deep-dive series, we takes a wander back to the core of the JFK story to understand the volatile behavior of this highly complex individual by looking past the neon lights of the Carousel Club and rewinding the tape to where it all began.To trace the roots of Ruby's explosive violence, we travel back to March 25, 1911, and the crowded, impoverished immigrant streets of Chicago's West Side. Born Jacob Rubenstein, he was the fifth of eight living children born to Joseph and Fanny Rubenstein, Polish Jewish immigrants who had fled the violent, repressive rule of Tsarist Russia. Growing up in what his own family described as a below-middle-class ghetto on Morgan Street, Jacob's world was defined by coal smoke, ethnic street fights, and extreme domestic trauma. The Rubenstein home was a toxic pressure cooker of parental strife and heavy violence, driven by his father's severe alcoholism and explosive rages, leading to constant police interventions and an eventual family disintegration when Jacob was just ten years old.As his family collapsed, Jacob watched his mother, Fanny, descend into severe, tragic mental illness. Plagued by a bizarre, lifelong delusion that a sharp fishbone was permanently lodged in her throat, she spent years dragging her children to clinics, eventually slipping into intense paranoia and being committed to Elgin State Hospital in 1937. Left to run wild, Jacob dropped out of school by the eighth grade to become a street hustler, earning the lifelong nickname "Sparky"—a name born of his awkward walk or lightning-fast temper, which he so thoroughly despised that he would instantly attack anyone who dared say it to his face. Despite the childhood neglect, Jacob remained deeply devoted to his mother, internalizing her frantic anxieties and intense volatility in ways that would profoundly shape his adult life.By age eleven, Jacob's truancy and incorrigible behavior at home led to an evaluation by the Institute for Juvenile Research. The resulting 1922 psychiatric report is a chillingly prophetic document, describing an egocentric, quick-tempered, and highly erratic child desperate for attention he could never receive at home. Declared a dependent ward of the state, Jacob was torn from his siblings and isolated in foster homes, fostering a desperate need to "be a somebody" that would follow him all the way to the Carousel Club. If you visit Westlawn Cemetery just outside Chicago, you'll find a simple granite headstone for the man who silenced Lee Harvey Oswald on live television. But carved right in the center of that marker is a bracketed childhood nickname: Jack "Sparky" Ruby. In part two of our special miniseries, we rewind the tape to the cobblestones of 1920s Chicago to meet the teenage Jacob Rubenstein long before the strip clubs, the mobsters, and the history-shattering events in Dealey Plaza. This is the story of a boy running wild on Roosevelt Street—a kid who refused to sit at a school desk, refused to work for a boss, and violently beat anyone who dared call him by his own name.Following his designation as a dependent ward of the state in 1923, young Jacob was temporarily exiled to a rural Illinois foster farm—a quiet landscape that must have felt like another planet to a boy raised on the pavement of the Maxwell Street ghetto. Though his fractured family was loosely patched back together a couple of years later, the household remained a chaotic, disorganized pressure cooker. To some, he was a gentle, polite boy who idolized world welterweight champion Barney Ross. The topics range widely with a crowd like this. We dip into how RAW differs from a lot of superficially similar cultural figures. While scams, cults, and thought leaders (cringe) might identify real problems, they almost inevitably just end up replacing the status quo with their own half-baked ideas. RAW purposely went a different way. Instead of spoon feeding a replacement belief system, he encouraged people to stick with questioning and to keep interrogating reality (my words). We also bump into chaos theory, get into some gritty details about Discordianism, its founder Kerry Thornley (aka Omar Khayyam Ravenhurst, aka Ho Chi Zen) and how he happened to know Lee Harvey Oswald before Kennedy's assassination, and so many other fun digressions. Inevitably, we keep coming back to the conclusion the chaos is unavoidable but how we respond to it is not. Instead of suffering under its weight, our time is better spent influencing our worlds with intention and valuing curiosity over certainty. In 1982 Ruth's brother told police she had confessed that on August 8, 1980, a second brother held Rolf down while she shot him twice in the head, after which the body was dismembered in the bathtub, burned in a backyard barrel, and scattered on the manure pile. A search turned up replaced carpet over bloodstains, spatter on the ceiling, and a bloodstained .38-caliber Smith & Wesson hidden in Ruth's dresser, tying her to a killing that began as a fight over the roughly $80,000 she had quietly moved into an account bearing only her name; convicted in 1985 and sentenced to twenty years, she maintained her innocence until her death at seventy-three.The episode closes with nineteen-year-old Nell Cropsey, who walked onto the front porch of her family's Elizabeth City, North Carolina home with her suitor Jim Wilcox on the night of November 20, 1901, and was never seen alive again. Her body surfaced in the Pasquotank River on December 27, her death caused by a violent blow to the left temple, and Wilcox — the son of the local sheriff, known for a fierce temper — was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to thirty years before Governor Thomas Walter Bickett pardoned him in 1918. Jeb and Blake tackle In Search Of...'s S05E03 topic of Lee Harvey Oswald. Episode Summary This In Search Of episode examines the assassination of President John F. Kennedy through the lens of (at the time this aired) newly discovered acoustic evidence and Cold War intrigue. We pick the story back up  just as the JFK assassination takes place on November 22nd, 1963 and events almost simultaneously begin to unfold and  overtake her. The  harrowing story of Sylvia Duran, a 26-year-old Mexican consular secretary at the Cuban Consulate in Mexico City is one of the most confounding in  the  JFK's assassination story.  Amidst the chaos following President Kennedy's assassination on November 22, 1963, Duran's  name surfaces in Lee Harvey Oswald's address book, linking her to his September visit where he sought a visa to Cuba.
