Disrupting MedTech: Turning the Smartphone into a Life-Saving Medical Device with Gennadi Saiko

In this episode of Disruption/Interruption, KJ sits down with Gennadi Seko, founder and CEO of Oxilight, who is revolutionizing wound care diagnostics by transforming smartphones into powerful medical imaging devices. Gennadi shares his personal journey from Bay Street finance to medical physics, driven by his grandmother's diabetic foot amputation. He discusses how his company is disrupting the medical device industry by making diagnostic technology portable, affordable, and accessible—moving critical wound care assessments from expensive hospital labs to patients' homes. This conversation explores the intersection of deep tech innovation, healthcare accessibility, and the power of multimodal diagnostics in saving lives and limbs. Four Key Takeaways [26:19] Multimodality is the Game Changer - Instead of multiple expensive single-purpose devices sitting on shelves, combining three technologies (multispectral imaging, fluorescence imaging, and thermal imaging) into one $200 smartphone attachment provides a 360-degree view of wound health and dramatically improves diagnostic specificity. [9:29] The Diabetes Crisis is Escalating - 27% of seniors (65+) in the United States have diabetes, and the disease is now affecting people as young as 25. Diabetic foot complications account for 80% of all non-traumatic amputations, making early detection critical. [21:44] Mobility Saves Lives and Money - Moving diagnostic technology to patients' homes solves the compliance problem and enables early intervention. Preventing one amputation saves healthcare systems 10x in costs while dramatically improving patient quality of life. [14:50] Physiological Imaging Beats Anatomical Measurement - Traditional wound measurement with rulers only tracks size over time, requiring multiple visits. Physiological imaging provides immediate prognostic information from a single snapshot, identifying whether a wound will heal normally or requires intervention. Quote of the Show (23:27): “I don't want to improve hospital healthcare. I want to improve healthcare in general." - Gennadi Seko Join our Anti-PR newsletter where we’re keeping a watchful and clever eye on PR trends, PR fails, and interesting news in tech so you don't have to. What happens when a wealth manager applies institutional discipline and global insight to hospitality investing? In this episode of Sharkpreneur, Seth Greene interviews William Huston, Founder and General Partner at Bay Street Hospitality, who discusses his journey from a call center business to creating global hospitality-focused funds designed to deliver high yields through quant-driven strategies. William shares deep insights into hospitality investment, covering topics from student housing in Hong Kong to tourism growth in India, and how his firm's data-driven approach maximizes returns for institutional investors. He explains how combining local market intelligence, government partnerships, and strategic acquisitions has enabled Bay Street to scale rapidly while maintaining high-quality service for asset owners, operators, and developers worldwide. Key Takeaways:→ Long-term success depends on backing proven operators and developers—not just attractive properties. → Student housing shortages in Hong Kong, India's tourism boom, and Australia's Olympic-driven infrastructure investments all represent distinct, time-sensitive market drivers. → The same disciplined frameworks used in wealth management, including risk assessment, alignment, and scalability, can be successfully applied to hospitality. → Hospitality is an experience-driven business, shaped by human connection, culture, and memory. → Growth should align with life priorities. In 2018, William Huston founded Bay Street Hospitality, where he currently serves as General Partner. Bay Street started as a call center based in El Salvador, structured as an LLC, serving his own investment fund rather than other companies' clients. The firm operates globally across public and private markets and applies a proprietary quantamental investment framework that integrates quantitative scoring models with fundamental underwriting discipline and targets hospitality operators, developers, and asset owners, offering equity, credit, and hybrid capital solutions. In May 2025, Huston launched a $430 million hospitality investment fund aimed at combining financial returns with positive social impact, targeting underinvested hotel markets globally, with a particular emphasis on India's fast-growing tourism sector. Tommy DiMisa is back for the first Philanthropy in Phocus episode of 2026 with his trademark “day-in-the-life” energy—ringing in the new year, celebrating his 48th birthday, and broadcasting not from the attic this time, but from the worldwide headquarters of Vanguard Benefits. Along the way, he shares highlights from a packed week: supporting a Queens Chamber of Commerce nonprofit needs assessment with local leaders, jumping on calls about mission-driven work (including efforts supporting incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people), and continuing to show up as “The Nonprofit Sector Connector” who helps organizations amplify their stories. This week's featured guest is Tracy Mitchell, Executive Director of Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor (BayStreet.org). Tommy brings Tracy on because he's intentionally challenging himself to learn more about the arts and culture space—especially as Bay Street Theater becomes a semi-finalist in the Long Island Imagine Awards. What follows is a lively, heartfelt conversation about the power of the arts to change moods, open minds, and build community. Tracy shares her remarkable path from being a child performer to producing work in television and film—including large-format projects like Back to the Future: The Ride, and an ABC primetime documentary special hosted by Oprah. Together, they reflect on how technology transformed storytelling, lowered the barrier to entry for creators, and expanded who gets to make and share meaningful work.Tracy then pulls back the curtain on what makes Bay Street Theater special: it's an intimate 299-seat professional regional theater that operates year-round, bringing in Broadway-level talent while producing new work and reimagining classics. She explains the scale of their summer season—multiple mainstage productions running eight shows a week—plus comedy, concerts, and special performances that keep the venue buzzing beyond the traditional theater calendar. One of the biggest missions Bay Street embraces is developing what's next: supporting writers and artists through opportunities like their New Works Festival, where scripts are selected, performed by professional casts, and refined through audience Q&As. Tracy makes the case plainly: you don't find “the next Hamilton” without taking chances on original work.A centerpiece of the episode is Bay Street's Literature Live program—created to ensure more students experience professional theater while they're still in school. Tracy describes how the program adapts curriculum-connected books into 90-minute productions (with full sets, lighting, costumes, and professional actors), and brings middle and high school students in for free—schools just cover transportation. The real magic, she says, is what happens when students from different backgrounds watch the same story and take away different insights, sparking conversation, empathy, and connection. Tommy ties it back to the heart of the show: when art creates understanding, it strengthens community—and that's nonprofit work in action. To close, Tracy shares how listeners can help: volunteer support (they need about 10 volunteers per night), donations, and community investment keep the theater thriving, since ticket revenue covers only part of what it takes to operate. Tommy leaves the door wide open for future collaboration—hinting at an upcoming visit, tour, and promotional content to help Bay Street reach even more people. It's a high-energy, feel-good episode that spotlights how arts organizations don't just entertain—they educate, inspire, and create the shared experiences that hold communities together.

Send us a text message and tell us your thoughts.Celebrate the holidays with us with a throwback episode as we open a window onto a season where streets become stages, kitchens turn into archives, and every drumbeat and carol carries a story. From the clatter of cowbells in Nassau to the smoky crackle of a roast pig on Christmas Eve, the region's holidays reveal how history lives in sound, taste, and togetherness. We start with the pulse of festival culture: Junkanoo's lavish costumes and goatskin drums marching down Bay Street in the Bahamas, and the Boxing Day launches in the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Kitts and Nevis, Belize, and Montserrat. Each celebration stitches heritage to the present—months of planning, bursts of creativity, and a shared promise to meet at dawn. Then we head to St. Vincent and the Grenadines, where Nine Mornings wakes neighborhoods at 4 a.m. with concerts and games, culminating in a joyful jump up that proves community thrives when people gather before sunrise. Our journey continues into homes and churches. In Suriname, Godo Pa—Dearest Daddy—arrives on December 6 with gifts and poems, a post-independence figure who replaces Old World icons with a reflection of local identity. Across the Spanish Caribbean, Noche Buena brings families to the table for lechón, yuca, and music that lasts late into Christmas Eve, while Three Kings Day keeps the season open into January as children leave grass and water for the camels and wake to gifts beneath the bed. These customs hold the region's layered past while nurturing the joy that keeps people close. No Caribbean holiday is complete without music. Parang bands roam neighborhoods in Grenada, and parang-soca lights up Trinidad and Tobago with door-to-door harmonies. We share favorites—from Scrunter's Christmas classics and Bindley B's celebratory anthems to Carlene Davis's reggae carols—curating a playlist that can transform a winter commute into a warm-weather fête. By the end, you'll hear how a festival becomes a bridge, how a song becomes a keepsake, and how a meal becomes a map back home.Press play, share your family tradition, and tell us the holiday song you return to every year. (CSE: SUR) has strategically positioned itself across two commodity cycles through its April 2025 acquisition of the Cimarron gold project in Nevada whilst maintaining a diversified lithium portfolio anchored by a 300,000+ ton LCE resource at Clayton Valley, California. This dual-commodity approach provides investors with exposure to gold's current bull market and lithium's structural electrification demand.Following recent meetings on Wall Street and Bay Street, President and CEO Steve Hanson reports renewed institutional appetite for junior and mid-cap mining opportunities. Major banks including JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, UBS, Deutsche Bank, and HSBC forecast gold reaching $5,000 per ounce in 2026, driven by central bank accumulation, interest rate dynamics, and geopolitical tensions. Simultaneously, lithium markets show stabilisation following the 2023-2024 correction, with institutional interest returning to quality projects. The Cimarron gold project, located in Nevada's prolific Walker Lane trend approximately 35 kilometres south of Kinross's Round Mountain mine, benefits from extensive historical work conducted by Newmont and Echo Bay during the 1980s-1990s. Surface Metals has digitised this historical database and created three-dimensional geological models, positioning the company to commence phase one drilling in early 2026 with clear targeting rationale. The programme aims to confirm historical high-grade intercepts, validate a non-43-101 compliant resource, and expand towards a million-ounce target. Shallow oxide mineralisation suggests potential heap leach processing economics - a lower-cost development pathway relevant for junior companies.Surface Metals' lithium portfolio demonstrates geographic and geological diversification across three projects. The Clayton Valley brine project sits immediately northwest of Albemarle's Silver Peak operation - North America's only producing lithium brine facility operational since 1966. The company targets a preliminary economic assessment in 2026, evaluating direct lithium extraction technology offering faster processing and higher recovery versus traditional evaporation ponds. Neighbouring operator SLB's 2025 demonstration facility successfully produced lithium from similar brine chemistry, de-risking technology application.Fish Lake Valley represents exposure to sedimentary claystone lithium mineralisation, sitting contiguous to Ioneer's Rhyolite Ridge project backed by Ford, Toyota, and Panasonic offtakes with 2026 construction commencement planned. Surface Metals actively seeks joint venture partners to fund initial drilling. In Manitoba, NASDAQ-listed Snow Lake Resources earns into the company's pegmatite project through funded exploration whilst Surface Metals maintains carried interest without capital outlay.Capital efficiency distinguishes Surface Metals' approach. The company has reduced operational costs whilst advancing projects through partnership structures and targeted technical work avoiding dilutive capital raises during unfavourable market conditions. Sector consolidation reduced lithium-focused companies from 200-250 to approximately 60, with Surface Metals amongst survivors maintaining intact portfolio positioning to capture recovery momentum.Management contemplates multiple value realisation pathways including asset sales, joint ventures, or corporate restructuring to separate gold and lithium portfolios. In market conditions where commodities experience distinct cycles, portfolio separation could unlock valuation disparities whilst providing shareholders direct exposure to preferred commodity themes. All projects benefit from tier-one North American jurisdictions with established infrastructure, proximity to operating mines, and relatively streamlined permitting. Nevada exploration permits typically achieved in 90-120 days. As gold supply deficits emerge from major producers exhausting high-grade reserves, and lithium supply security achieves strategic priority, Surface Metals' portfolio positioning addresses structural market dynamics favouring quality junior mining opportunities in premier jurisdictions.View Surface Metals' company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/acme-lithiumSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

Radhika (aka: Rad) Lakhani Esq., LLM JD, is an expert in human conflict resolution and relationship dynamics. She has thousands of hours of experience as a divorce lawyer, mediator, children's lawyer, court appointed dispute resolution officer, and educator.   In 2022, after almost 20 years in law and ADR, Rad transitioned from family law lawyer to family IN-powerment educator.   Rad's mission is to help families experience greater peace and harmony. She believes that when parents and children are IN-powered, with the right tools, they not only resolve their own conflict, but begin to truly THRIVE.  Rad believes that every child deserves to be raised in a peaceful home.  Rad left law to help families heal conflict at the ROOT (which she realized the legal system is not designed to do). Her experimental group-courses led to dozens of clients stating that they felt more empowered, less anxious, happier, & more at peace in 1-2 months.  The results were incredible, and better yet, they were starting to positively impact her client's children.     Rad's clients have called her their “life guru”, “Yoda” and “soul activator.”  Her desire is to help people transform their greatest challenges into their greatest miracles, to help them experience rapid transformation with greater ease, and provide a new pathway for families to resolve conflict in a lasting and empowering way.
