This episode of Friends Who Argue features a discussion panel with three lawyers who have made the transition from BigLaw to found very different types of small or solo legal practices. Our speakers include Alexi Wood, Ryan Breedan, and John McIntyre. Our panelists discuss the very different reasons why they decided to found an independent legal practice, the myths and misconceptions of starting a small law practice, what challenges they overcame, and why they value the freedom of small or solo practice.Alexi Wood graduated law school in 2000 and started out carrying out non-private practice work relating to international development and the Canadian Civil Liberties Association. Alexi transitioned to BigLaw six or seven years after law school, and valued the commercial litigation training she received working in BigLaw for the decade that followed. Alexi struck out to found a law practice that was more flexible, diverse, and responsive to a mission statement that she could champion (as well as to benefit from conflict of interest referrals).Ryan Breedon made partner at a “big” Bay Street litigation boutique and was essentially content with his career. However, circa 2015 his wife and him wanted to relocate their young family back to Barrie, Ontario, where they had roots. Remote working was not yet a thing that law firms did at this time, which led Ryan to found his own solo practice. This eventually led to hiring some associate or two, and, recently, a partnership. While not his purpose, Ryan very much valued the flexibility and ability to make independent decisions that being a solo/small practitioner provided him. John McIntrye gained valuable experience in the health law specialty while articling and being an associate in BigLaw. John began to feel increasingly constrained by the bureaucratic environment he was in. He therefore left legal practice to pursue a master of public health at John Hopkins in the United States, intending to continue his career in the health sector but not necessarily legal practice. With the pandemic having very much put remote work on the table, John initially carried out Canadian health law work as something of a side practice while in graduate studies. In 2022, however, he joined forces with Jessica Szabo and embarked on a business development spree to found a boutique health law firm. This was successful, although a growing business leads to its own challenges. “What I want Canada to be, and I think this is where Pierre can take us, is a country that is so full of opportunity that we need to open our doors even bigger to have the best and the brightest come in because our economy is growing.”In a time when politics, business, and economics feel like a house of mirrors, this episode breaks down why Canada still matters—and what it will take to keep it that way. From affordability crises to bloated bureaucracy, it's not about ideology anymore—it's about survival. This conversation draws a sharp line between stakeholder control and individual freedom, between bureaucratic sprawl and a thriving economy rooted in opportunity.Ian Robertson reflects on lessons from Mike Harris' era, where clear communication, common-sense leadership, and policy courage turned third-place polls into governance victories. He outlines how Pierre Poilievre's focus on clarity and urgency parallels that legacy, and why the fight today is not just political—it's structural. Whether it's reforming immigration policy or slashing government bloat, Ian argues that Canada must choose between decline or regeneration.Ian Robertson is a seasoned political strategist and corporate advisor. Chris Wong, chef and co-owner of Lilijana Eatery in Port Melbourne, brings a unique culinary story to Melbourne's food scene. A former professional hockey player who spent nearly a decade travelling to and from Scandinavia for the winter season, Chris was inspired by the comfort and tradition of the Nordic cuisine he ate in his friends' homes. His restaurant, named after his wife Christine's grandmother, Lilijana, blends Scandinavian and continental European flavours with a focus on house-made sourdough, smoked salmon, and pickles. Chris actually trained and worked in industrial design, but always wanted to work with food. With lockdown and more time on his hands, he volunteered at Gradi to learn some skills and he worked with various mentors in the hospitality industry. Chris and his wife, Christine initially started with a food truck making pizza before transitioning to running Lilijana Eatery with Christine's sister, Steph. The café's thoughtful menu, warm hospitality, and Chris's commitment to sustainability have already earned it a spot in Good Food's top 20 cafes, a testament to their hard work and passion. Chris is a driven chef with an insatiable desire to learn more and he loves sharing everything that he learns with his customers both in the café and in the classes he teaches upstairs on Bay Street. I loved hearing Chris' story and I can't wait to go back to Lilijana Eatery to try more Scandinavian treats.

On this episode of the "House of Hockey" Podcast, Rae and her guest co-host Joe Cangelosi, dive deep into the latest NHL news, PWHL news and share candid opinions on the hottest topics in the hockey world. Joe is a two-time guest of the podcast and a former pro hockey player most recently playing for the Carolina Thunderbirds. We dive right into the NHL frenzy, starting with the Florida Panthers vs. Carolina Hurricanes showdown that seemed to involve everyone throwing punches. And speaking of fights, who could forget Brandon Tanev of the Seattle Kraken taking on Connor Garland of the Vancouver Canucks? And let's not overlook the confrontation between Bobrovsky and Tkachuk, adding more fuel to the fire in the NHL rivalry department. But the drama doesn't stop there. We discuss the rollercoaster week for the NY Rangers' Matthew Rempe, from his eventful first game on the outdoor rink to controversial hits and game-winning goals. Plus, Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs reaches a milestone with 50 goals this season in his home state of Arizona, while the Arizona Coyotes face controversy with Adam Ruzicka's contract termination after a troubling social media post. In AHL, we celebrate the Rochester Americans' unique initiative of putting nicknames on jerseys for a good cause, and goaltender Jaxson Stauber's impressive night for the Rockford Icehogs. The PWHL takes center stage with the historic Battle on Bay Street at Scotiabank Arena, where Montreal faced off against Toronto in front of the largest pro women's hockey crowd ever expected and the newest sponsor of the league. We also delve into the lighter side of hockey fandom with a social media viral video call-out involving a disgruntled Toronto Leafs fan and a tossed hat. Emeryville is a tiny town – less than 2 square miles. It's nestled between Oakland and Berkeley, right at the foot of the Bay Bridge, and most people probably think of it as a place to go shopping. Two major freeways cut through Eville and from your car, while you're inevitably sitting in traffic, you can see giant signs for Ikea, Target, and Bay Street mall. If you're not from the Bay Area, you might know it as the home of Pixar. This era of Emeryville as a mecca of cartoons and commerce is relatively new. A generation ago, the landscape looked drastically different. Media often described it as an “industrial wasteland” due to the toxic pollution left behind by factories that fled in the 1970s and 80s. It was also known as a place where corruption festered during the reign of an allegedly corrupt police chief who “ruled the town with an iron fist,” according to former city manager Joe Tanner. Flash forward to 2024 and Emeryville's brand new mayor Courtney Welch, the first Black woman to hold that position, can legitimately claim that the town is “having a bit of a renaissance.” Brand new parks, apartments, and shops now occupy land that was littered with junked cars, rusty warehouses, and crumbling buildings. Taking notice of this transformation, I wrote about some of my favorite things to do in Emeryville recently for SF Gate and the article got a huge response. So, since a lot of people seem to be checking out Emeryville for the first time, I though it would be a good opportunity to look back at Emeryville's history and ask some important questions… Like: How did it become such a hell hole in the 80s? How did it transform so radically since then? Why does this extremely unique tiny little town even exist? Spoiler alert: The answers to all these questions are pretty crazy. There's a good reason why former Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren famously called Emeryville “the rottenest city on the Pacific Coast.” Today's episode features interviews with Rob Arias, publisher of The Eville Eye community news site, and creator of the Emeryville Historical Society's new Park Avenue District walking tour; and also Joe Tanner, who served as Emeryville's city manager in the 1980s. https://eastbayyesterday.com/episodes/rotten-city-no-more/ Note: Note: To hear my previous episode about the history the “Emeryville shellmound” and battles over Ohlone sacred sites, click here: https://eastbayyesterday.com/episodes/where-are-those-ancestors-now/ This episode is sponsored by UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals.
