Ray McGovern is back to discuss the recent talks between Putin and the Biden Administration. McGovern observes that the talks, framed as a tense battle over Ukrainian sovereignty, appear to have actually steered towards a discussion about arms control in the region. A discussion that's grown in necessity since the Trump Administration abruptly left a nuclear treaty with Russia. Scott and McGovern also talk about the collapsing narrative that the Russians are set to invade Ukraine any day now.  Discussed on the show: “Peeking Past the Pall Put Over Arms Talks With Russia” (Antiwar.com) Ray McGovern is the co-creator of Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity and the former chief of the CIA's Soviet analysts division. Scott celebrates eleven years on the radio by interviewing Gareth Porter about Biden's first year in office. They discuss the negotiations between the Administration and Iran over a return to the JCPOA. Despite many crossovers with the team that reached an agreement with Iran back in the Obama years, Biden's people appear set on squeezing more concessions out of the Iranians. But Porter points out that, as he had predicted, the U.S. reluctance to return to the deal led to hardliner victories in Iran's last elections. But even with a more anti-American regime, Porter sees no evidence they'd actually produce a nuclear bomb. Scott and Porter also talk about Afghanistan and the humanitarian crisis the so-called champions of Afghan freedom seem completely uninterested in helping to relieve. Discussed on the show: “When the Ayatollah Said No to Nukes” (Foreign Policy) “The Civilian Casualty Files” (New York Times)  Gareth Porter is an investigative historian and journalist on the national security state. He is the author of Manufactured Crisis: The Untold Story of the Iran Nuclear Scare and, with John Kiriakou, The CIA Insider's Guide to the Iran Crisis. Scott interviews Lyle J. Goldstein, who now works at Defense Priorities. Goldstein challenges the idea that a war with China over Taiwan would be fundamentally different from the war in Afghanistan. In fact, he thinks the U.S. had a better chance of victory in Afghanistan. He explains how China could render all U.S. carrier groups useless and force the Americans to rely completely on their submarines. But neither would that be a path to victory because of China's anti-submarine capabilities. Goldstein also points out that it's by trying to destroy these Chinese ship-killing missile launch sites that the stage is set for dangerous escalation. Discussed on the show: “Like Afghanistan, a War for Taiwan is Unwinnable” (National Interest) “The Scary War Game Over Taiwan That the U.S. Loses Again and Again” (Real Clear Investigations) “The War Nerd: This is how the Carriers Will DIe” (The Exiled) Lyle J.
