An official Opening Day roster will be finalized before the Nuts open their 30th season at Jackson® Field™ at 6:05 p.m. on Thursday, April 2, vs. Dayton. A closer look at the roster for the 30th season of Lugnuts baseball, featuring 14 returning players and 16 newcomers to Michigan's state capital: Starting Rotation - Lansing's rotation is expected to combine 2025 Nuts Steven Echavarria, Kyle Robinson, and Tzu-Chen Sha with newcomers Zane Taylor, Samuel Dutton, and Jackson Finley. All six pitchers are right-handed. The 20-year-old Echavarria led the Nuts last season with 25 starts, while Robinson posted seven quality starts, and Sha was part of Chinese Taipei's 2026 World Baseball Classic squad. Taylor, the A's 2025 fifth-round pick from UNC Wilmington, led all D-I pitchers in K/BB ratio and WHIP; Dutton, drafted in the tenth round from Auburn, led the Tigers in wins and strikeouts and was named All-SEC; and Finley, a two-way standout at Georgia Tech, returns to action after missing the 2025 season. Bullpen - Here there be southpaws, namely 2025 Nuts Jack Mahoney and Ryan Magdic plus newcomers Tucker Novotny, a standout at Minnesota, and Riley Huge, who struck out 20 batters in a sensational 7 2/3-inning gem while at Winthrop University. More familiar faces abound, too, with Jake Garland (2023-2025) entering his fourth year in Lansing, Jose Dicochea (2023-2024) making his third appearance, and Luis Carrasco (2024) returning after a season lost due to injury. Ryan Brown, one of the Pac-12's top closers at Oregon State, also returns to action after missing 2025. A trio of new A's acquisitions top things off: Abel Mercedes from the Houston Astros and Darlin Pinales from the Arizona Diamondbacks, both selected in the Rule 5 Draft, and Gerlin Rosario, picked up from the Tampa Bay Rays in a trade for former Lugnut Cooper Bowman. Led by manager Javier Godard, the 2026 Lugnuts first take the field against the Michigan State Spartans in the Crosstown Showdown on Wednesday, April 1, at 6:05 p.m. at Jackson® Field™ before opening the season with a three-game homestand vs. Dayton from April 2-4. Bend Cubs Edged Out by Lugnuts 6–5 Despite Gallagher’s 12 K Gem Lansing, MI — The South Bend Cubs came up just short in a tough 6–5 loss to the Lansing Lugnuts on Saturday night at Jackson Field, despite a stellar outing from starting pitcher Ryan Gallagher. The 2024 sixth-round draft pick delivered a career-best performance, striking out 12 batters over six innings and allowing just five hits. Unfortunately, two pitches proved costly — a two-run home run by T.J. Schofield-Sam in the second inning and another two-run shot by Sahid Valenzuela in the fifth. Down 4–1 entering the sixth, the Cubs rallied. Drew Bowser lined a two-run single to cut the deficit to one, and the game was tied moments later when Miguel Pabón scored on a controversial fielder’s choice. The Lugnuts failed to turn a double play, and while the throw appeared to beat the runner, the umpire ruled the defensive player wasn’t in contact with second base while possessing the ball. Lugnuts manager Darryl Kennedy strongly disputed the call and was ejected from the game. The Lugnuts regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth on a catcher’s error, and added what turned out to be the game-winning run in the eighth on a throwing error by the right fielder. South Bend mounted a final rally in the ninth. Brian Kalmer scored on a line-drive single to right by Ivan Brethowr, but Brethowr was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double to end the game. Right fielder Jared Dickey fired to shortstop Joshua Kuroda-Grauer, who applied the tag to secure the final out. Despite the loss, South Bend out-hit Lansing 9–6, and Gallagher’s dominance on the mound was a bright spot as the Cubs look to bounce back in the series.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

South Bend Cubs Fall to Lansing Lugnuts, 4–1 Evan Aschenbeck delivered six strong shutout innings for the South Bend Cubs, but ran into trouble in the seventh. The Lansing Lugnuts struck for four runs in the bottom half of the inning—two of them charged to Aschenbeck—as they rallied to defeat the Cubs 4–1 at Jackson Field. Lansing outhit South Bend 10 to 9, and the Cubs missed key chances at the plate, going just 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position and stranding nine men on base. South Bend’s only run came in the top of the fourth, when Andy Garriola doubled home Jefferson Rojas. The Cubs will look to bounce back in the next game of the series after letting this one slip away late.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Work in Sports Podcast - Insider Advice for Sports Careers
Getting the right experience early in your sports industry career is critical to establishing yourself to future employers, and minor league sports is one of the best places to do so. Minor league organizations run on lean staffs and budgets but are expected to put on a major-league quality sporting event regardless. Those expectations lead to staff members wearing many hats and fulfilling various roles (ticket sales, marketing, fan engagement, media relations, and broadcasting) throughout each season. That versatile experience is why minor league sports should be part of everyone's sports internship strategy.Today's guest on the WorkInSports Podcast is Greg Kigar, Lansing Lugnuts' Assistant General Manager for Stadium Events and Operations. Kigar has spent nearly three decades working in minor league and college sports and has also taught aspiring sports professionals as an adjunct professor. Throughout his career managing stadiums and facilities, he has supervised hundreds of workers at countless sporting events and observed the traits of those who reach their career goals and those who fizzle out of the industry early. He and VP of Content and Engaged Learning Brian Clapp discuss:• What a typical game night looks like in Minor League Baseball stadium operations• How Kigar identifies and develops talent for minor league sports jobs• How MiLB helps MLB evolve, and how else baseball can modernize itselfEnjoy the full episode to learn more about Kigar's experiences and who he looks for when hiring his staff each season.
