In an email sent out last Monday, Long Beach State President Jane Close Conoley announced that the university has officially lifted its in-class mask requirement. Masks are now strongly recommended in indoor campus settings, but will not be enforced. Beach community members are asked to continue self-monitoring for COVID-19 related symptoms, and to respect the choice of students and staff members who continue to wear facial coverings. President Conoley received a 28% salary raise from the California State University Board of Trustees. Her raise starkly contrasts hat of faculty members, who received a 3% this year. Long Beach State faculty members and students are expressing their discontent with President Conoley's raise, and are raising questions about the allocation of university funds. We spoke to the Daily Forty-Niner's News Assistant, Vincent Medina, for more on the story. While gas prices are falling nationally, they are on the rise again in California. State officials are putting the blame for the high prices on oil companies, though production problems at refineries, high industry regulations, and California's state gas tax are all contributing factors. Some California residents will begin to receive inflation relief payments in the coming weeks as a part of Governor Gavin Newsom's $11 billion inflation relief package. To quality for a relief payment, residents must have filed income tax in California and earn less than $500,000 a year. The last two remaining candidates for Long Beach mayor, Rex Richardson and Suzie Price, are scheduled to participate in a forum in the USU Beach Auditorium this Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 5:30pm on the Long Beach State campus. The one-hour forum, hosted by ASI and the Long Beach League of Women Voters, is free to enter and open to all members of the public. The Daily Forty-Niner's latest print issue is out today! Focused on graduate school, this issue tackles an array of topics from dealing with anxiety about graduate school to advice on succeeding in graduate school. Whether you are in grad school, are interested in attending, or know someone who is, be sure to pick up a copy at one of the newsstands located on campus. In Season 9: Episode 4 of Beach Weekly, we are taking a look at how recent weather events are impacting Long Beach State students, on-campus mask policies, and the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Southern California's record-breaking heatwave continued through last week, with temperatures reaching nearly 100 degrees on Long Beach State's campus. While all students are being affected by the extreme weather, Fine Arts students are experiencing it worse than most others. Buildings within the Fine Arts Department have lacked air conditioning since their construction in the 1950s, and Long Beach State has not attempted to improve building conditions amidst the recent heatwave. On Wednesday, Fine Arts students and faculty members staged a walkout of classes to protest the building conditions and demand action from the university. Daily Forty-Niner News Editor Hannah Shields provides more coverage of the walk-out and where the situation stands now for the Fine Arts Department. Tropical Storm Kay hit Southern California on Friday afternoon after traveling north along the coast from Baja California. Though initially categorized as a hurricane, Kay was downgraded to a tropical storm upon hitting California. An extremely rare occurrence, the storm brought rain, high winds, surf warnings, and slight flood damage in some areas. While many Long Beach State students and faculty members expected the in-class mask requirement to be lifted by now, the university has not mentioned any plans to do so. Mixed opinions are held about the policy, as mask-wearing is not required in many settings on campus and because Los Angeles County has not enforced indoor masking in most settings for several months. Long Beach State has not mentioned any plans of listing the mask policy for in-class settings. Queen Elizabeth II died last Thursday at the age of 96, after serving as Great Britain's monarch for more than 70 years. Though Queen Elizabeth worked to modernize British society and has seen the monarchy through the progress and turbulence of the last near-century, her legacy is laced with the reality of Britain's history of colonization and violent oppression of numerous Asian, African, Caribbean, and South American countries. Following Queen Elizabeth's death, her son, Charles, has now been crowned King Charles III. In Season 9: Episode 3 of Beach Weekly, we are covering major state-wide topics and the return of two favorite Long Beach events. Southern California is now in its second full week of the largest heatwave of 2022. Though it is believed that the peak of the heatwave was experienced over Labor Day weekend, high temperatures will continue to be felt this week. Long Beach and Los Angeles will see temperatures into the 90s, while the Inland Empire is expected to see temperatures as high as 115 degrees. The heatwave has brought forth a slew of additional concerns across California. The Route Fire is continuing to rage near Castaic Lake, and has threatened neighborhoods and burned more than 5,000 acres of land. Rolling blackouts for the entire state may be looming in an effort by the California Independent System Operator to prevent the overtaxing of the state electrical grid. The state has been sending "Flex Alerts" to its residents' mobile devices to stress energy conservation in an effort to such prevent blackouts. At Long Beach State, the extreme heat has prompted some students to voice their concerns over insufficient air ventiliation on some parts of campus. Last Thursday, Sep. 2, the California Legislature passed bipartisan bill AB 2273 in an ettempt to protect the data privacy of minors online. The bill is the first of its kind in the nation, and is designed to regulate how social media and online platforms use data accumulted from users under the age of 18. AB 2273 is now being considered by Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has until Sep. 30 to veto the bill or sign it into law. Long Beach State's annual festival, Smorgasport, is being held for the first time in two years. The event is for Long Beach State students only, who only need to show their student identification cards and sign a waiver to enter. The festival will include carnival rides, a roller rink, laser tag, a maze, photo booths, food trucks, and much more. Smorgasport will be held from 6pm-10pm on Saturday, Sep. 10 in Parking Lots G3 and E1 on the Long Beach State campus. Students who are in need of disability-related accommodations for the event will need to complete the Bob Murphy Access Center Event Request Form. On Sep. 8-11, the Long Beach QFilm Festival will in downtown Long Beach. The QFilm Festival is the longest-running film festival in Long Beach, with 2022 being the 29th year of the festival. The QFilm Festival will feature independent documentaries, short films, and tributes about the diversity and experience of LGBTQ+ communities. Festival goers can purchase tickets online at qfilmslongbeach.com. Host: Isabel Silagy Edited by: Calla Delos Reyes Like, comment, and follow us on your favorite platform for more content! For Season 9: Episode 2 of Beach Weekly, we are bringing you all the major headlines from the second week of the Fall 2022 semester. With the Fall semester now well underway, Long Beach State is experiencing an overall increase in student enrollement. According to the CSULB Office of Public Records, Long Beach State's enrollment is now at 38,200 students. The rise of enrollment is due in part to the university's 30% decrease in online classes this semester as compared to Fall 2021. Long Beach State has announced that Ted Kadowaki will serve as the Interim Executive Director of Athletics starting on Sep. 1. Kadowaki will be filling the role vacated by Andy Fee, who was hired as Beach Athletics Director in April 2017. Kadowaki is expected to serve as the Interim Athletics Director through Summer 2023, at which point the university plans on recruiting a new permanent director. Week of Welcome will take place from 11am to 3pm on Aug. 30 and 31 along the Central Quad and Speaker's Platform. Beach Pride Events is anticipating the participation of 280 organizations, the largest turnout for Week of Welcome in recent years. With the persistence of COVID-19 cases and the recent rise of the monkeypox virus, questions are being raised about Long Beach State's campus safety policies. The university has not announced any policies related to the monkeypox virus, and there are doubts as to whether it will continue to enforce its current masking policy to reduce COVID-19 emission. Long Beach State is continuing to require that all students receive booster shots of the COVID-19 vaccination as part of its immunization policy. Face coverings are required indoors with the exception of the Student Union building and library for those who are fully vaccinated. Eligible first-year students in need of a laptop or tablet can participate in the CSULB Technology Loan Program and use the devices through the completion of their degree. Additionally, CSULB's Division of Information Technology is working on expanding outdoor Wi-Fi on campus. CSULB is beginning to make its transition to Canvas this academic year. The university will continue to utilize both BeachBoard and Canvas throughout the 2022-2023 academic year, and plans to move completely to Canvas in fall 2023. A new mental health initiative is being launched this year with the implementation of new strategies for a more holistic approach to students' mental health treatment. Long Beach State Athletics Director Andy Fee, who has served as LBSU's Athletic Director since April 2017, announced his departure from The Beach on August 8th and will be heading for the University of Washington. LBSU's Women's Soccer season started off yesterday night against USC, resulting in a 1-0 loss. LBSU's Women's Volleyball season begins on Saturday in the Portland State Tournament. Resilient. That would be the best word to describe T.J. Bruce. After his playing career ended, he decided he wanted to get into coaching. When he first started coaching junior college baseball he was making 5k while supporting his wife who was still in school. He was passed over three times while he was a volunteer assistant at Long Beach State for the paid position. He never gave up. After he became the head coach at the University of Nevada, he had a player pass away, and then two weeks later, his dad passed away. He held it all together and became a stronger man. He did all of this while becoming known as one of the best college recruiters in the country, won a national championship, and have a family. SHOW NOTES:[1:49] Why did you decide then to transfer to Long Beach State?[3:27] When you say the style of play, what do you mean?[5:58] So you're a graduate assistant when you came back and then did you transition into just a full-time assistant coach?[9:17] During those four years was there ever a point where like I need to get a real job?[13:19] Do you have a game plan of like what you want to do?[15:08] Do you have to go out and watch just as many games as a mid-major school or can you just go to the big tournaments and just kind of pick and choose the best ones because it is UCLA?[18:01] What was your recruiting pitch to someone who was drafted pretty high but obviously, still wanted to go to school with you?[19:27] What do you think makes you a good recruiter?[21:21] Why did you end up taking that big instead of staying at UCLA?[24:28] How do you balance having a family with four kids and a wife plus being the head coach of a Division one baseball program?[25:53] What was one thing that was unexpected that you found whether it be a good or bad thing about being a head coach that you didn't know you would kind of feel or figure out?[28:08] How were you able to kind of hold everything together and just keep it going?[29:36] When you got there what did you put in a completely new, system-like philosophies for offense and pitching and everything, Or how do you kind of go about changing the baseball culture?[31:35] Do you man pretty much the offense?[34:13] Have you implemented anything in terms of helping guys with their mental game?[39:19] How do you decide how much an incoming recruit gets?[41:49] What do you make of that of those bigger schools sometimes recruiting players and I've seen it even in the fall the guys coming in the fall and they don't play well They're on a big seller ship in the spring there at a junior college?[43:50] Do you look at junior college players?[44:16] If I'm a recruit right now listening to you what are some of the best things that you can kind of describe about going to the University of Nevada and playing baseball there? Key Points, Top Takeaways, and Memorable Quotes“In 2017, I was just kinda doing life, had two little kids and a house, a pool in the backyard, and a job.  It was 120 degrees outside, but to get back to the cancer story.” 3:54“One thing I didn't know about Testicular Cancer is that it's the most common type of cancer in white males between the ages of 18-34, which is a very big eye-opening thing; I was diagnosed at 38.” 7:54“Besides being told you have cancer, to me, the scariest thing about it was just the word chemotherapy.” 9:21“I played volleyball during chemotherapy with friends and I felt pretty good.  I had to take it easy and chemotherapy made you a little more sensitive to the sun, and obviously, energy levels are a little lower.” 14:50“I'm very grateful that I responded the way that I did to chemotherapy.” 15:14“I compared it to sports and this was the path that I needed to do to get better for cancer and chemotherapy was the vehicle.” 16:21“There's a reason middle blockers don't set.” 16:45“The key is to check yourself; self-exam (hate to say it and laugh but) or have someone check for you.” 21:44“The social connection and the physical exertion was so big for me for my own mentality knowing that I could be going through chemotherapy but I'm still able to play volleyball.” 23:19“When other friends of mine go through life adversity and troubles and tests, I always want to be there to help them and make them know that I'm there to help them if they want my help.  They have to come to me; I'll make myself available.” 24:35“A good mental check for me to know that I could still compete.” 34:02“When I was playing full time, I would train harder than the matches were so that the matches seemed easier.” 37:46“What it felt like to have that emotion flow through me from volleyball, but then from all challenges and to overcome them and to get back to a place where I was satisfied with volleyball.” 50:58“When I was coaching at the college level, there was no social media.  There was none of this pressure from external factors, from opening up instagram and seeing yourself get blocked on repeat every single ten seconds.” 56:36“Accept it. It's volleyball. You got blocked. Big deal.” 56:59“Let them try all the sports, they'll pick whichever sport they want to play, then when they get to the level where it's more serious, there's other dedicated full-time coaches for them to get coaching.” 58:14“I really do enjoy talking about volleyball without it being to a team that I'm coaching or seeing faces and having to kind of rearrange your talk track a little bit.” 1:02:43“I know that I need to have a goal athletically that's physically challenging for me to work towards, for my own personal psyche, and how I operate when I'm with my kids, what I want to do and where my focuses are.  1:14:33“It's not about going back and changing what's happened in my life to have gotten me to where I am today.  It's analyzing and thinking about the choices I've made given the situations that I was in that have brought me to where I am today, and what I can take from them moving forward for myself and the most important people around me in my life, whether it's family or friends.” 1:22:39“It's not looking back in regret, but it's learning from the choices and helping me make the right choices moving forward so it puts me in the place to be the things that I wanna be for myself, and as a parent for my kids or a friend or whatever I need to be for that day.”  1:23:12“Realize where you are, what you have, take it, and be better for it.” 1:23:58 Guest Bio - Matt Prosser was born and raised in Ventura, California and now lives in Hermosa Beach. He is a 43 years old father of two young boys Nolan (8) and Welles (6).  Matt started playing volleyball at the age of 13 after playing nearly every youth sport, once he found volleyball he was hooked.  A self-described “volley-nerd” in middle school and high school Matt was a Junior Olympic Champion in 1997 and went on to play NCAA volleyball at Long Beach State where he was a 3-time All-American, team captain, and NCAA finalist.  After graduating with a broadcast journalism degree in 2001 Matt went on to play one season of professional volleyball for OK Maribor in Maribor, Slovenia.  Matt started playing beach volleyball in high school and during the summers of college in Ventura and decided to play professional beach volleyball in 2003.  Matt played on the AVP tour for 13 seasons, and made the 2010 AVP Hermosa Beach Open Finals as the 13th seeded team with John Mayer but lost in the finals to Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers.  Matt won the 2011 AVP Champions Cup in Huntington Beach with partner and childhood teammate Matt Olson. Overall, Matt competed in 105 professional beach volleyball events between 2003 and 2018.  His final main draw appearance was in the 2018 Manhattan Beach Open when he partnered with Eric Beranek as the Q34 seed winning four matches to qualify for the Main Draw approximately one year after being diagnosed and recovering from testicular cancer.  Matt turned his love of indoor and beach volleyball into an emerging career in international and domestic broadcasting, doing play-by-play and color commentary for Long Beach State Men's Volleyball, Volleyball World, and Italian Professional Indoor Volleyball.  Matt broadcasts VNL matches and will join AVP events later in 2022.  Outside of volleyball, Matt enjoys coaching his sons sports teams, and stays physically and philanthropically active, supporting the Arthritis Foundation and will ride in the California Coastal Classic Bike Ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles.Show Notes 0:00 - What I Meant to Say Podcast Intro0:18 - Introduction1:57 - Comeback Story2:10 - Cancer Survivor Story2:52 - From the Beginning4:19 - During the Physical Exam5:49 - Diagnosed March of 20176:20 - What's the Course of Action?8:48 - 5 Years Clear in May9:11 - 9 Weeks of Chemo then Back to Volleyball10:28 - Chemotherapy Was Very Scary13:12 - Raw Vegan13:48 - Grain Brain Book14:30 - An Athlete's Perspective on Cancer Treatment15:54 - Only 28 Days 16:31 - Blocking Analogy and the Importance of Setting18:29 - Back to Your Chemotherapy Approach19:06 - My Hair Came Back19:28 - There are Reminders20:02 - Relying on the Data with Confidence21:21 - What is Your Advice to Men?22:58 - Fortunate to Play Volleyball During Chemo23:51 - Feeling Comfortable and Safe 26:09 - Is it a Challenge to Get People to See the Doctor?27:15 - The blessing of family support28:12 - Effects of Chemotherapy28:57 - Timeline to Hermosa Beach 201729:46 - 2017 Hermosa Beach AVP Qualifier 32:49 - Playing Stadium Court34:02 - Reality Check34:27 - 2017 Manhattan Beach AVP Qualifier35:59 - Mentoring Eric Beranek37:19 - Playing with Eric's Energy Levels38:24 - 2018 MBO Top Ten Video Clip40:56 - Different Mindset in Austin42:31 - Work Responsibilities Spiked42:58 - 2018 MBO AVP Qualifier47:14 - Last Match to Get In48:37 - One of My Biggest Moments49:17 - Jason's Compilation of Top 5 Qualifier Matches in Last Decade50:28 - Well of Strength in Overcoming Challenges52:21 - Similarities with Tri Bourne53:30 - Culmination of Playing AVP55:35 - Journey of Athlete to Parenting56:36 - College Athletes and Social Media57:42 - Separation Between Being Parent and Coach59:04 - Taking a Step Back and Broadcasting 1:00:28 - Color Commentary at Long Beach State1:02:30 - Opportunities1:03:22 - Where Do You Go from Here in Your Athletic Journey?1:04:38 - 2018 Labor Day CalCutta1:07:26 - No Wins on Saturday = No Sleep1:08:16 - Something Happened Sunday and We Clicked1:09:18 - Winning and Finding Fulfillment1:12:50 - Do You Have Fun Playing For Fun?1:14:00 - Ran First 10K Super Bowl Sunday1:14:49 - Half Iron Man and California Coastal Classic Bicycle Ride1:15:54 - Set a Goal and Go Achieve It1:17:10 - Comfortable Discomfort with Challenges1:19:20 - Longest Running Event or Distance1:20:55 - Iron Man Challenge1:22:15 - Wisdom to Yourself or the Younger Generation1:23:58 - Be Better1:24:38 - Where Can People Find You?1:26:28 - WIMTS Podcast Closing Links & Where to Find MattArthritis Foundation - DONATE HEREhttps://events.arthritis.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donate.participant&participantID=261153See More from Wendy JoneBroadcasts on ESPN+ Plus for Long Beach Men's Volleyball www.NVAUSA.comwww.VolleyballWorld.TVIG - @themattprosser

Welcome to Roadcase!!  We are so incredibly psyched to present the one and only Corey McCormick for this episode. Corey has been playing bass in Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real since 2010, and has also played with Chris Cornell, Koshi Inaba, Neil Young and Willie Nelson. With a career that has now spanned over two decades, Corey, who is also a father of two young boys, has literally done it all -- and is extremely grateful for the amazing experiences he has encountered in his life as a touring musician. His dedication is also extraordinary; Corey studied Music Performance at Long Beach State before embarking on his journey and continues to work extremely hard at his craft. Family life is also important to Corey -- while having spent years on the road, he is now also focused on the broader picture of what it all means. Energetic and introspective, Corey is a model of focus and dedication, and knows what it takes to continue to succeed both personally and professionally in his chosen life. His side project, Organa, provides Corey with an outlet for his multi-varied musical interests, and this funk, rock and soul trio is exciting and fresh. Check out Organa's new single, "Demons & Devils," on all the streaming platforms.  And hop aboard the Roadcase Bus to learn even more about Corey McCormick -- the musician, Dad, and all-around cool dude. Something akin to cinematic anthropology comes to mind when considering the work of the fantastic Kim Taylor Reece. Very few people are artistically able to simultaneously access the deep truth of another culture's beauty, while effortlessly projecting a nuanced vision, maintaining both the depth of the original authentic spirit, alongside the fingerprint of the artist, synergistically in its presentation. Mr.Reece does just that and more, with his lens he has done a noble task, bringing the world to the interior of Hawaiian culture's historical physical language of hula kahiko, an unbroken verse passed via osmosis, direct transmission, from one generation onto the next, a signal sent from the innumerable past, pulsing with life in its active expression. With such care, love, and reverence, all evidently apparent in his work, Kim Taylor Reece has inextricably linked himself to this lineage. Continuing to achieve wonders towards Hawaiian hula's continuation, preservation, and exposure to the outside world. With pleasure we present this rare interview with this exquisite living master of the photographic art, Kim Taylor Reece.Hawaii's foremost fine art photographer, Kim has been studying the hula kahiko for 40 years. A catalyst of Hawaii's cultural renaissance of the 80s, his photography captures the mystery and magic of this dance, which for generations has excited the imaginations of people around the world.  In his research, Kim has traveled with the Hawaii State Foundation of Culture and the Arts, enabling him to study and work with dancers from more than 35 different Pacific Islands. His extensive research of costumes and dances of the early Hawaiians captures the spirit and essence of this ancient ritual. His unique style has established the visual standards for hula kahiko. As millions encounter Kim's work every day,  his art helps to preserve the hula and enrich lives. Kim's award winning photography has brought him worldwide recognition. Over the years Kim has received 15 Pele Awards, Print Magazine Awards, The First Kahili Award HVB, Travel Journalism Awards, and National Community Service Awards. His images have been acquired by collectors, dignitaries, and collections internationally.  He studied art at Long Beach State in California and was told to change majors due to his color blindness. He uses this to his advantage in capturing the subtleties of the hula kahiko in black and white. He uses the sepia tone to represent the timelessness of the dance. For those who appreciate the hula, Kim Taylor Reece has devoted his talents to the celebration of Hawaii's ancient dance. e komo mai - come and experience.Styled by OnQueStylehttps://onquestyle.comDress:  Brand: Flying TomatoName: Photo Finish Woven Mini DressDescription: This gorgeous dress from Flying Tomato's is perfect for this time of year! With its light lime print, the features go unnoticed, such as a pleasant long bubble sleeve with a smoked cuff, elasticized waist, ruffled hemline, and above-the-knee length, there is so denying this dress was made for spring.  I wore it with a complimenting light brown belt, but it comes with a self-tie sash that matches the pattern of the fabric!
