I am not against training tools at all, I just choose which ones I prefer to use as they are most effective for results and for owner success. choke chains though are interesting as a choice for an owner with minimal skills, as they CHOKE the dog, same with slip leads with both an untrained dog and handler they choke, so why are folks not up in arms about them, i mean think about it, dogs at Westminster are on choke chains (why no uproar), AKC allows them but not prong collars, interesting isn't it.
We love our dogs, but let's face it! If they aren't properly trained and well behaved, they can be a handful. Like a lot of dog owners, maybe you've decided your pup needs training. Wendy's guest, Shannon Riley-Coyner, felt the same way. As a teenager, she took her lab puppy to a training class, but she was shocked at the methods used; choke chains and too-tight collars were used as punishment. Positive reinforcement was nowhere to be found. She quickly left that class and set out on a pursuit to find a safe, kind and gentle dog training method. She decided there had to be a better way, and she found it! Now she's an in-demand dog trainer, internationally renowned speaker and author of The Evolution of Dog Training: From Choke Chains to Clickers, Uncovering the Secrets to Having a Well-Behaved Dog. If you have a dog you want to train the kind, gentle, humane way, or if, like Shannon and Wendy, you're concerned about how common punishment is used in dog training, this episode is a must listen!
Prongs, Choke Chains, Shock Collars, the list goes on. But are they actually abusive? This week, I dive into why I don't believe they are abusive and how they can actually help save your dog's life and bring you some peace and harmony. The Third Men Podcast is proud to present an all-new exclusive extended interview with legendary Detroit rock powerhouse Thomas Jackson Potter! Jack White fans know Tom for many projects over the years, such as membership in The Dirtbombs, prominent inclusion on Jack's Sympathetic Sounds of Detroit compilation and most notably as the frontman for Detroit's quintessential two-piece rock group BANTAM ROOSTER. Like the Flat Duo Jets before them, Bantam Rooster blazed the trail for two-piece potential in the rock world, and paved the way for The White Stripes in the years that followed. Tom's electrifying guitar sound is the perfect blend of high-energy rock and carefully crafted melody, and his extraordinary talents can be heard on countless records from the 80's, 90's and beyond - including the now-classic Ultraglide in Black LP from The Dirtbombs and Bantam's 2000 Sympathy release F*ck All Y'All. As friend and collaborator with artists such as Jack White, Mick Collins and Jim Diamond, Tom helped define the Detroit rock sound during the turn of the millennium and continues to push musical boundaries to this day with innovative groups like Seger Liberation Army and Choke Chains. We here at the Third Men podcast would like to thank Tom for joining us for one of the most fun, lively discussions we've ever had on the show and hope everyone has as much fun listening as we had interviewing!
