#356 - 1980: The Beginning of Modern Metal

The year is 1980. The U.S. National Debt is a paltry $900 Billion, the word “yuppie” appears for the first time in print, the Pac-Man videogame is released in arcades everywhere, Mount St. Helens explodes in Washington state, and Cable News Network (also known as CNN) becomes a thing.   In the world of metal, Iron Maiden release their self-titled debut album, Black Sabbath reinvent themselves with new frontman Ronnie James Dio on vocals and release Heaven and Hell, and AC/DC regroup after the tragic loss of Bon Scott and release Back In Black featuring new vocalist Brian Johnson, an album that would go on to sell more than 40 million copies and become one of the biggest selling albums of all time.   Just as time and technology continued marching forward, the hard rock of the 70's continued its evolution into a new direction with a faster, heavier, and more aggressive sound beginning in 1980 that would become even faster, heavier, and more aggressive throughout the 80's.   Get ready for a taste of “Something Haunted” from the “Necronomidonkeykongimicon” and find out why “you gotta watch for the flops” if you want to get in the spirit and enjoy the FIFA World Cup.    Discover which dinosaur is “the biggest dinosaur”, understand the rules and regulations regarding “flip-flops”, find out which type of rooster has the best breasts, and be sure to “have a nice June” when you JOIN US as we dive headlong into the year that gave us the birth of modern metal with THE YEAR OF OUR RIFF LORD – 1980. Tommy Emmanuel's a big name in the acoustic guitar world, and he's set to start a new tour. Throughout his career he's performed with bands like Air Supply and Men at Work, headlined tours around the Globe and toured with Eric Clapton and John Denver. Among his many career awards, he's won a Grammy for best instrumental arrangement and is one of only 5 ever Chet Atkins certified guitar players. His Living in the Light Tour starts in Auckland at the Town Hall tonight. "I feel it's my calling to play for people, because when I play, people get happy. So I don't call it the music business, I call it the happiness business. I play, you get happy - everyone's happy." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today's episode starts exactly where all respected broadcasting should begin: with Mini Kiss and a discussion about whether tiny rock legends drink full-size bottled water backstage. The gang recaps the absolute fever dream crossover happening in St. Louis — Chelcie Lynn on one side of town, Joe Dirt and Mini Kiss on the other — proving once again that this city runs entirely on chaos and questionable scheduling decisions. Then things somehow spiral into a full investigation of Air Supply, yacht rock confusion, and one of the weirdest transitions in show history. Which honestly feels correct for a daily comedy show held together by caffeine and emotional damage. From there, the conversation nosedives beautifully into horse fart audio analysis. Yes, really. The show attempts to identify a mysterious sound clip that turns out to be a horse relieving gastrointestinal pressure while the crew debates whether horse anatomy should legally sound like a chainsaw starting in a swamp. Educational radio at its finest. But the real emotional centerpiece of the episode is recess nostalgia. The gang breaks down everything modern kids are missing now that schools are cutting recess time: kickball politics, monkey bar injuries, freeze tag betrayal, double dutch reputations, and learning life lessons through controlled playground violence. Rafe reveals he was once an elite-level double dutch prodigy before peer pressure crushed his dreams, which honestly deserves its own documentary series. The crew also debates:Why malls are suddenly packed with teenagers againWhy malls immediately regretted letting teenagers returnWhether helicopter prom entrances are genius or criminal activityThe wildly suspicious math behind raising childrenWhy the Great Pacific Garbage Patch somehow turns into a conspiracy discussionTire swings, trash islands, playground danger, and Midwest logicIt's the kind of daily comedy show where one topic accidentally unlocks twelve childhood memories and at least three emotional scars before 7am.Whether you grew up surviving recess kickball politics, roaming malls unsupervised for six straight hours, or pretending monkey bars weren't OSHA violations, this episode feels like a weirdly comforting trip back to simpler times… just with more sarcasm and significantly worse knees. If you love funny podcasts, comedy podcasts, daily humor, weird news, nostalgic chaos, and pop culture commentary from people who absolutely should know better by now, welcome home.Follow The Rizzuto Show → linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → 1057thepoint.com/RizzShowHear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The back half goes deep on education: what's actually going on with autism diagnoses, why ADHD might just be a mismatch between how kids learn and how schools teach, and whether any of this gets fixed if we keep paying teachers $38,000 a year. Valentine's Day is usually a parade of roses and power ballads, but Dave and Rob are taking a scenic detour through the heartbreak aisle. The 80s had a special talent for turning breakups into epic events, complete with echoing drums, pleading vocals, and choruses that felt designed for late night staring contests with the ceiling. These songs did not whisper their sadness. They announced it with synthesizers, lighters held high, and enough emotional reverb to fill an arena. Whether you were dumped, doing the dumping, or just dramatically sighing for effect, the decade made sure you had the perfect soundtrack From Foreigner's wounded resolve to Air Supply's soft focus despair, the 80s breakup song was pure emotional craftsmanship. Richard Marx captured the ache of love slipping through your fingers, while Bonnie Tyler turned heartbreak into a full body experience, raspy voice and all. These were not just sad songs, they were monuments to love gone sideways, built with key changes and unapologetic sincerity. As Dave and Rob count down their favorite tear stained classics, expect a reminder that sometimes the best Valentine's playlist is the one that lets you feel it all, preferably with the volume up and the lights low Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/totally-80s-and-90s-recall/id1662282694    Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/11dk5TUoLUk4euD1Te1EYG?si=b37496eb6e784408    Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/1960c8f9-158d-43ac-89a6-d868ea1fe077/totally-80s-and-90s-recall    YouTube Podcasts: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLH9lGakNgCDZUkkHMUu88uXYMJu_33Rab&si=xo0EEVJRSwS68mWZ   Playlists: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3zA5TNw3msEJvfvLO52qF8?si=I8Cq0N-2SVaNHDjQspO59Q    Apple: https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/80s-breakup-songs/pl.u-38oWrY5Ig5GBpk   Amazon: https://music.amazon.com/user-playlists/cd94569cced94ed3bd5c1ae36f8b4de6sune?marketplaceId=ATVPDKIKX0DER&musicTerritory=US&ref=dm_sh_mggkjq9FAokZfxKoiZef5zVTX   Contact Us: Website: https://totally80s90srecall.podbean.com/  Email: 80s90srecall@gmail.com   LinkTree:https://linktr.ee/80s90srecall

Then, in a moment that will be studied by historians, legendary karaoke warlord Brown Eye blesses the mic with his velvet renditions of Air Supply and other certified wrist-slitters. We close out with our feel-good segments: "Best Soundtracks to Yeet Yourself To" and "How to Drown in the Shallow End Without Looking Like a Quitter." "Whiter than cottage cheese", "bright as an unripe grape"? This is some world class woo-pitching, and Polyphemus the one-eyed wonder has high hopes that such romantic language will win fair Galatea, sea nymph extraordinaire, to his hirsute side. He may not be much to look at, monobrow and all, but the Cyclops boasts that he comes with many benefits: great musical skill, a cheez whiz packed man cave, and 1000 head of cattle. As Theocritus the famous Syracusan poet tells the tale, should we take it as farce? Or, is the song a serious philosophical inquiry into the healing nature of poetry? Join the guys this week as they take a close look at Idyll XI, an awkward, adolescent love song that the Alexandrian poet composes for that shaggy Cyclops as a backstory, before he encountered Odysseus. The insights of Brooks Otis, Erling Holtsmark, Robert Schmiel, and yes, Dronebrella, set the stage. So, cue your mixtape with Air Supply or Survivor, pray for gills, and don't miss this one!

“I had to watch it 3 or 4 times to finally get there…”   Ahhh, the 80's. A time when people could actually afford to live, back when Taco Bell was both super cheap and equally delicious, horror movies were genuinely scary and often boasted incredibly “special” special effects, and terrified parents everywhere were completely “freaking the motherfrickin' frick out” over heavy metal and the ensuing “Satanic Panic” that followed. (Remember, we're talking about the 80's here…)   “I kinda feel like Satan probably listens to Air Supply nonstop…or Gino Vanelli…”   Not to worry though, because Tipper Gore was on the case, going out of her way to ensure that the future prosperity of heavy metal would be secure forever with the PMRC seal of approval (PARENTAL ADVISORY – EXPLICIT CONTENT) plastered on the cover of everything that would be deemed essential listening.   Thanks to the diligent efforts and painstaking research of Tipper Gore and her Parents Music Resource Center, the PMRC lovingly crafted “The Filthy Fifteen” for American parents to ensure that their children would only be exposed to the finest audio artistry the heavy metal genre (and somehow, also Satan) had to offer.  One of the bands included on that fateful list were the founders of black metal, VENOM (ironically, rated “O” … for “Obviously” …as in “Obviously, your kids should be listening to this!”).    Hailing from probably the fanciest, most upper crust sounding city in all of England, Newcastle upon Tyne's 3-piece of evil VENOM came blasting out of the gates of hell with what would become the foundation for the black metal genre that would begin its ascent into heavy metal culture around the same time as thrash metal in the early 80's, with a sound combining the rawness of Motorhead, the darkness of Sabbath, and the speed of thrash with an imagery reminiscent of KISS if they were actually satanists.    If Black Sabbath are ground zero for the formation of heavy metal as we know it, then VENOM is no doubt the Black Sabbath of the black metal genre. With a dark, detached creepiness that sounds like something recorded in an underground mausoleum, VENOM are the originators of extreme metal and were out in front, scaring the hell out of parents everywhere and delighting young and impressionable metalheads the world over.   Happy Halloween everyone!!! It's time to celebrate spooky season the way we did back in the 80's, by going through your kids trick-or-treat plunder and picking out all of that “good candy”. In Part 3 of the Meat Loaf story, we explore the turbulent years and meteoric comeback between Dead Ringer and Bat Out of Hell II.  As Meat Loaf's partnership with Jim Steinman collapses once again after Dead Ringer fails to live up to expectation and Steinman is released from his recording contract. As Steinman finds new found success penning massive hits for other artists like Bonnie Tyler with Total Eclipse of the Heart and Air Supply with Making Love Out of Nothing at All. While Steinman thrived, Meat Loaf was left to go it alone, as he struggled to write his own material while facing mounting pressures from his record label, his managers, and even Steinman himself as he would be hit with a wave of lawsuits that ultimately drove him to bankruptcy. Forced to retreat from the lime light, Meat turned his focus to his family by coaching his daughters Little League team before reuniting with Steinman for an incredible comeback that no one saw coming. As Meat earned himself a Grammy with I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That), cementing his place in rock history as an all time great as Meat finds himself in a great place towards the mid 90's and gears up for the final act of his remarkable journey, set to be explored in the final part of the Meat Loaf story. To mark the occasion, Dave and Milt jump into their chart-shaped time machine and land smack in the neon glow of 1982, where Paul McCartney was still cranking out hits, Air Supply hadn't yet exhausted their supply of feelings, and the Go-Go's were busy corrupting the youth on VHS tape. You'll get chart commentary, deep cuts of trivia, unsolicited opinions, and a listener email so good it made us want to binge a Billy Joel documentary (and maybe some Billy Joel himself). Also: CSN takes a nap, REO regrets an album, and we discover something called Johnny Aloha which... yeah, you'll just have to listen. Oh, and there's a game at the end where Milt tries to identify artists from insane lists Dave cooked up in a fever dream. It's harder than it sounds. Topics & Timestamps: 01:06 –

Australian producer Charles Fisher's resume is all over the place. Two of his earliest producing jobs were with Australian punk legends Radio Birdman followed by Air Supply! That kind of diversity continued for decades working with everyone from Olivia Newton-John to Divinyls to Jimmy Barnes to Hoodoo Gurus to Deep Blue Something (as well as more Australian artists like Moving Pictures and Ol' 55). In the 90s he hit the jackpot when he did Savage Garden's debut album that went on to sell over 15 million copies. We often discuss the effect financial success has on an artist's desire to create, but here we hear it from the producer's perspective which is a fascinating story.
