Comprising the Brothers Kinnon (Chris on vocals and guitar; Jeff on drums), riff-master Sean Casey (guitar), and classically educated bass player Enzo Figliuzzi, the Canadian/California-based band has played with everybody from garage legends like the Dirtbombs to arena stars Kings of Leon, making SXSW best-of lists numerous times, and in between hanging out with the Rolling Stones' legendary manager Andrew Loog Oldham. But putting integrity first had a cost: obscurity. Lions in the Street began their career by signing and then walking away from the troubled TVT Records (NIN, Pitbull, Little Jon), Nickelback's 604 Records (Carly Rae Jepson), and legendary manager Allen Kovac (Motley Crue, The Cars, Blondie, The Bee Gees), earning them a spot on the music industry's blacklist. Years in the wilderness resulted—working as a garbageman for almost a decade, surviving cancer, serious workplace injuries, and almost deadly car accidents, and going back to school. Yet, despite experiencing the best and worst of the of old music business—from hanging out with Todd Rundgren, Bob Ezrin, and R.E.M.'s Peter Buck, to seeing an A&R guy almost fired just for going to see them play—the band somehow kept going, releasing music piecemeal. For example, Lions in the Street released an EP in 2013 on British legend Sandy Roberton's label. Roberton ran Blue Horizon, the English label that launched the 60s British Blues rock movement with John Mayall, Fleetwood Mac, and Rory Gallagher.  Now the streaming platforms revolution has given Lions in the Street a new life an audience, allowing them to release largely-unheard music—finally finished and remixed/remastered. Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

Welcome to the final episode of Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions' 2022 season. We saved a great one for the finale: Kid Congo Powers. Born Brian Tristan in La Puente, California, he eventually adopted the stage name which appears on the cover of Some New Kind of Kick, a new memoir that documents his time in The Cramps, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and The Gun Club, with whom he's credited for “excessive feedback, guitar and slide guitar, whirling whirlies, maracas and ancient mutterings.” And that's not all it covers. Kid's story is a layered one. The book, written with Chris Campion, gets into all of it, including frank examinations of queer identity, struggles with addiction, and his connection to the late Jeffrey Lee Pierce—who's dream visit inspired his 2020 Pink Monkey Birds Latin psych epic “He Walked In.”  At once hilarious, tender, and possessing an almost dreamlike spiritual quality, it's a great read. And it arrives alongside two new records: Summer Forever and Ever, the second album by Wolfmanhattan Project, his trio with Mick Collins of The Dirtbombs and Gories and Bob Bert, formerly of Sonic Youth, and Kid Congo Powers and The Near Death Experience Live in St. Kilda, a live concert taped in Australia. Both will be out physically in 2023—but you can listen to them digitally now. Or rather, after you finish this conversation between host Jason P. Woodbury and Kid, fellow Arizonans. Thanks so much for listening to Transmissions. Our 2022 season closes with this episode. We'll be back in early 2023, keep your eyes on Aquarium Drunkard for more info and check out the Patreon for bonus content we'll be sharing over the next couple months. This season of Transmissions is concluded.

Welcome to Episode 58 of the Fresh Sounds Podcast! This week, Mark and Brendan have more upbeat party tunes, and a few moody ones, too. We began with a new single from Machester's Anz, with some production help from George Riley. Next, a wild brew of reggae and drum-and-bass music, with Peter Falk samples, to boot! Then an interesting bit of new music from Baxter Dury, of London. Prospa is a production duo from Leeds, back with a tune from their Rave Science Vol. 2 EP.Brendan is driving the time machine this week, and he went all the way back to 2001, for a slice of Motor City garage rock, from The Dirtbombs! (It's actually a cover of a 1968 Smokey Robinson hit, done in garage rock style. )As is our usual policy, we have six more bonus tracks to recommend, but you will have to sign up for our email newsletter to get those gems. If you want to do that now, please take a second to sign up for our newsletter right here. (And do so without fear. We won't misuse your email address, as this show is run by two guys, Mark and Brendan; Not some faceless corporation.) Lastly, don't miss our fabulous Spotify playlists. We make one for each episode of the show, so grab the latest if you are up to date, and dig into previous episodes if you are new here, or just curious. Have a great week!

061: Ed MarshallGood Morning! This is Play It Like It’s Music. I’m Trevor, thanks for listening. On Wednesday, October 21st of 2020 Music is not content. It’s connection.Today’s conversation is a wild ride, I’d say it’s fitting for the times we’re in too.Is there life after a dedicated music career? What happens if you decide to quit? I’m not talking about retreating to being a hobbyist - what happens when you actually choose to stop doing it?It’s not that much fun to think about, and you and I all know there are as many answers to that as there are people. But life has its twists and turns, and we don’t get to hold on to everything. In today’s case, however, there’s an interesting twist. [Last Days of CBGB's - photo by Ed Marshall]I’ve always been fascinated by house music. How’s about you?Photographer Ed Marshall made some house tracks in the 90’s, then life happened and he took off and forgot about it… and as they like to say, you won’t believe what happened next! One day in 2017 a couple of DJs tracked him down, and it turns out that copies of his old vinyl pressings were a much sought-after item in Ibiza and around the house scene. Like worldwide, man. Folks were throwing down $500 for a copy on eBay. I s**t you not. And Ed didn’t believe it either.[The Noisettes, The Fillmore, NYC - photo by Ed Marshall]Soon enough, Ari Goldman of World Building Records reached out to him about the re-release, and it came back out properly in 2018. We get to hear the origin story of that work, but because Ed and I are friends we get deep into some other crazy important stuff about family, community, spirituality and commitment. Nowadays Ed is a pretty well-known and celebrated photographer. But as you’ll hear, it all comes from, and eventually arrives back at music. Like life.[DirtBombs, Fort Greene, Brooklyn - photo by Ed Marshall]Folks who know Ed understand that he’s bringing a lot of layers of awareness and wisdom to every interaction. Just checking out his photography will reveal that he has an incredibly perceptive eye. He doesn’t always hold forth about what’s in his mind though, so this is a real privilege to get him on the show here today. Talking with him is always an eye-opener and this conversation was a great example of that.Quick ask: if you believe this show deserves a wider audience, please tell a friend:It’s an honor to have the man on the show.Press PLAY above to hear my conversation with Ed Marshall.Or subscribe in your podcast app: Apple Podcasts - Spotify- Stitcher - TuneIn - Overcast - PocketcastThanks for listening to Play It Like It’s Music. 2020 has been a hard year for pretty much everyone - but the heartbeat of great cities like Detroit are alive and well thanks to the people that make them something special. Earlier this spring, legendary Detroit rocker Ko Melina decided to start documenting all the amazing artists, small businesses, musicians and organizations that are fighting the good fight to help Detroiters battle covid 19. That project is known as The Heart of Detroit. Every day, Ko posts a new black & white, mask-clad photo to the @the_heartof_detroit on Instagram, and for over 150 days (and counting) this 100% non-profit labor of love continues to inspire. Join us for a special episode of the Third Men Podcast as we walk through the project with Ko from inception to the present day, and take an in-depth look into the heart of the city that has been so instrumental in the evolution of the music & culture we love so much. Your humble co-hosts also do some much-needed catching up with Ko since her last appearance on the program - including hearing stories from the epic Dirtbombs reunion set at the Third Man Records 10 Year Celebration last year! We'd like to thank Ko for joining us (our show's ONLY 3-time special guest!) and encourage everyone to head to Instagram to follow the @the_heartof_detroit. McIntosh

In the second episode of the McIntosh "for the love of music..." podcast series presented by Talkhouse, Elia Einhorn spoke with Ben Blackwell, head honcho and co-founder of the world-renowned Third Man Records alongside Jack White, and drummer of Detroit band the Dirtbombs. In the talk, Blackwell discusses Third Man's approach to the music industry — their business model, their philosophy, and the decisions behind their curation process. He also touches on Third Man's commitment to integrity and "doing things the old fashioned way;" tells the story of Neil Young and a very old (and expensive) recording booth; and gives a full rundown on the gear that he and Jack White use to listen to records.

SHADOW SHOW "Charades" Silhouettes Burger Records / Stolen Body Records Directed by Bobby Harlow w/ help from Magic Jake www.burgerrecords.com www.stolenbodyrecords.co.uk Hailing from Detroit, Shadow Show is a new sound in light of a new era. Sleek and spellbinding, the music sweeps you up into its frenetic psychedelic grooves and dazzling harmonies. Shadow Show pushes the boundaries of what can be, yet remains deeply rooted in the raw, untouchable Detroit sound. At the age of 17 they delved into a world where time no longer exists, where music takes its reign and everything else follows: Detroit’s music scene as it stands. It’s one of those things that remains almost as if it shouldn’t. Shadow Show started out in the dregs of the forgotten metropolis in a dark and transitional time for the city, playing in the basements of battered manors and inconspicuous store fronts. As the surrounding landscape changed, so did the soundscape the people of Detroit had created for themselves. Shadow Show, in its truest form, represents the love of a time long lost and the will of a time not yet discovered. A power trio of a mysterious hue, Shadow Show combines elements of 60’s garage-psychedelia into a 21st century modern pop-art incarnation. They project a vision to the world in their display: a spectacle of light as curious as shadow. Shadow Show, comprised of guitarist Ava East, bassist Kate Derringer, and drummer Kerrigan Pearce, debuted in August 2018. Upon the release of singles, “The Machine” and “Glass Eye,” they made their presence known nationally and internationally before laying low during the creation of their debut album, Silhouettes. They will tour Europe in February 2020 and the States in March 2020 upon the release of the album. ABOUT “SILHOUETTES”: Recorded in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Silhouettes is the self-produced debut endeavor of Shadow Show’s unique sound and vision. The 10-track album was recorded and mixed by Kate Derringer, and mastered by Jim Diamond (The White Stripes, The Dirtbombs, Ghetto Recorders). The album will be released internationally on Burger Records and Stolen Body Records on February 14, 2020. Notable tracks include, “Charades,” “Shadow Box,” and “Trapeze Act.”

The Third Men Podcast is proud to present an all-new exclusive extended interview with Detroit music legend Pat Pantano! Patrick's sound and imagery can be felt across countless projects from a variety of musical acts - including friends Jack and Meg White as they began their journey as The White Stripes! After cutting his drumming teeth with bands such as The Colors, Steel Miners and Cathouse, Patrick linked up with Deanne Iovan to form the groove-rock powerhouse The Come Ons. Of course, juggling multiple bands is by no means uncommon in the Detroit music world -- when Mick Collins needed a drummer for his new band project, The Dirtbombs, it was Patrick who answered the call and helped establish the scrappy, powerful sound the group would soon become known for. In addition to his musical work, Patrick holds the unique honor of photographing not one, but TWO White Stripes album covers (White Blood Cells and Elephant) during his time as the band's photographer. Join us this week as we uncover the many amazing stories of Pat Pantano - we’re thrilled to have had him on the show and hope you all enjoy this interview as much as we did! Plus we're joined by frequent Third Woman Kate McCoy to go deep into Dirtbombs trivia, and find out for us why exactly Mick Collins might not be allowed onto TV On The Radio's tour bus anymore! Listeners to the show know Ben for his many roles and talents from throughout the world of Third Man and beyond, and this week he stops by the Third Men Podcast to school us on just about everything! Nephew of Jack White but only 7 years his junior, Ben found himself at the ground floor of the Detroit Rock explosion lead by The White Stripes and their contemporaries at the turn of the millennium. Still a teenager at the time, Blackwell played drums with Jack White and Bricks alongside Brendan Benson and Kevin Peyok before signing on as drummer for Mick Collins' powerhouse rock collective The Dirtbombs. While music propelled him forward, Ben was also keen to keep one eye on the past in his role as archivist for The White Stripes, preserving performances and historical documentation for the band that had changed so much of the face of popular music. Ben's solo LP I Remember When All This Was Trees, released on his very own Cass Records, stands tall on its own - pushing boundaries and digging deep for unforgettable Detroit-inspired grooves. We're beyond thrilled to have Ben on the show and hope you all enjoy this interview as much as we did! We know -- we can't believe it, either! The Third Men Podcast is proud to present an all-new exclusive extended interview with Detroit rock legend Ko Melina! Ko's rock'n'roll resume is a long and fabled list of major musical accomplishments, lending her incredible talents to some of the most influential acts of the last 20 years. Key contributions to groups such as The Come Ons and The Breakdowns put her classical training and high-energy abilities to the forefront, but it would be her tenure in Detroit rock institution The Dirtbombs that would cement her as a fixture of motor city music. An early supporter and friend of The White Stripes, Ko would also go down in Third Man history as photographer for the band's eponymous debut LP and a batch of their early singles. Following an appearance on Jack’s Sympathetic Sounds of Detroit compilation, Ko formed her own group called Ko & the Knockouts, whose debut LP presents a beautiful fusion of the hard-edged Cass Corridor and the sweet melodies of Motown in a crisp, well-produced package. Sirius XM listeners can find Ko every Saturday from 8am-noon EST as on-air personality for her own show on Little Steven's Underground Garage channel - which we highly recommend our listeners check out. Jack White fans know Tom for many projects over the years, such as membership in The Dirtbombs, prominent inclusion on Jack's Sympathetic Sounds of Detroit compilation and most notably as the frontman for Detroit's quintessential two-piece rock group BANTAM ROOSTER. Like the Flat Duo Jets before them, Bantam Rooster blazed the trail for two-piece potential in the rock world, and paved the way for The White Stripes in the years that followed. Tom's electrifying guitar sound is the perfect blend of high-energy rock and carefully crafted melody, and his extraordinary talents can be heard on countless records from the 80's, 90's and beyond - including the now-classic Ultraglide in Black LP from The Dirtbombs and Bantam's 2000 Sympathy release F*ck All Y'All. As friend and collaborator with artists such as Jack White, Mick Collins and Jim Diamond, Tom helped define the Detroit rock sound during the turn of the millennium and continues to push musical boundaries to this day with innovative groups like Seger Liberation Army and Choke Chains. The Third Men Podcast is proud to present an all-new exclusive extended interview with a Rock'n'Roll legend, the one and only Mick Collins! Jack White fans know Mick for many things, but first and foremost as a founding member of one of the most influential rock bands to ever tear up a stage, The Gories. Every major movement stands on the shoulders of the giants who came before, and the Detroit rock revival that catapulted Jack White to stardom was a culmination of decades of visionary artistry from acts like The Stooges, MC5 and the high energy, blues/punk-infused sound that Mick Collins, Dan Kroha and Peggy O'Neill created. It's a tough act to follow, but follow it Mick did with the foundation of a new art project that would evolve into White Stripes contemporaries The Dirtbombs. With such members as TMR co-founder Ben Blackwell, Raconteur Patrick Keeler and former White Stripes producer Jim Diamond, this new band's connections to the Third Man Records universe run deep, and the group stands amongst the most prominent and successful acts to emerge from the era. Mick's other groups are no slouch either, from The Voltaire Brothers to The Screws to Blacktop and beyond, he continues to weave one of richest tapestries in modern music. And then he called-in to our show! We here at the Third Men podcast would like to thank Mick for joining us – it was a pleasure interviewing him and one of the most spontaneous, lively and fun interviews we've ever had the pleasure of conducting! It's an ooey-gooey-podcast-ka-blooey this week as we celebrate the lifeblood of Detroit Rock'n'Roll: the indomitable DIRTBOMBS! In the mid-nineties the music scene echoing out from the Cass Corridor was truly kicking into high gear. Groups like Bantam Rooster, Rocket 455, The Go and, of course, The White Stripes began to take shape, standing on the shoulders of legendary groups such as The Stooges and The Gories. When Gorie virtuoso Mick Collins started his next musical project in the primordial rock soup of 1996 Detroit, something special was bound to happen, and happen it did. Enter: The Dirtbombs - a revolving cast of quintessential voices in the rock revival and home base for such Third Man staples as Ben Blackwell, Jim Diamond, Patrick Keeler, E Wolf and many, many more. This week we cover the band's inception and discography, and are joined by Dirtbomb super-fan Kate McCoy for an unforgettable interview that ends with a surprise TOO INSANE to type here. The Third Men Podcast is proud to present an all-new exclusive extended interview with singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and co-producer/engineer of The White Stripes eponymous debut album, Jim Diamond! As Detroit experienced its nearly-unprecedented garage rock renaissance in the ladder half of the 90's, one studio acted as the epicenter of talent and innovation among the key talents of the movement more than any other: Jim Diamond's Ghetto Recorders. If the Gold Dollar was the petri dish for Detroit's sound, Ghetto Recorders was the microscope. The Dirtbombs, The Von Bondies, The Electric Six and many more turned to Jim's studio and production abilities to bring out their best, most honest sound possible. When it was time for Jack and Meg White to put their great rock experiment to tape, The White Stripes, too, found a home at the house that Diamond built. This episode, Jim gives us the scoop on everything from his own musical beginnings, to recording the White Stripes, to bass guitar with Dirtbombs and SO much more! And those were his exact words when he handed me this CD. He was particularly excited about the Scissor Sisters’ version of Pink Floyd’s "Comfortably Numb" which at that point had not hit the masses yet. I don’t know how he did, but Dave always could find nuggets of goodness way before anyone else.As he cued the tune up on the above pictured CD that is this week’s show, he turned to me with a fiendish grin and said, "You are gonna love this."And as always, he was right. I totally loved it.This past Wednesday, David Castleman passed away after a long bout with melanoma. He was my friend, confidant, and comrade and my world would not have been as funny, interesting, or gloriously profane without him in it. It really is hard for those of us that loved him to think of this world without him in it. I knew his situation was bleak when he was diagnosed with terminal cancer about a year and a half ago, but as fucked up as this sounds, I thought he was being over dramatic. He had beaten cancer twice before so why would this time be any different?Sadly, that was not the case. In the words of one of our favorite authors Charles Bukowski, "The gods play no favorites."To give you an idea of the type of relationship we had, a coupla of months ago he came to town with his family, and we were hanging out at a friends house with a bunch of people for a pot luck. As always, Dave, despite being in debilitating physical pain, was holding court while filling up a friend’s hard drive with music (this was something he always did; he was always turning people onto books, movies, and music). As the evening progressed, Dave got up from his comfy spot on the one-man sofa and an acquaintance of ours took over his spot in his absence. When he came back into the room and found his spot taken, he asked her to move. Not knowing the direness of his physical situation, the woman reluctantly relinquished the sofa with a touch of subtle but obvious annoyance. "What’s wrong with you, David?" she said as she got up.Without hesitating, he answered bluntly, "I have terminal cancer."When he said it, the whole room stopped. Up until that point, the mood had been light and airy as those of us close to him tried to keep reality at bay, but now, the ugly reality of his situation was exposed. As the room resonated with a deafening silence, from the other room, I did what I always did when David spoke with his distinctive candor.I burst out laughing. And I’m not talking about a mere chuckle or two; I was convulsing in laughter, which delighted him greatly. The outburst broke the silence and eventually the party (as well as the mortified woman) carried on while the two of us giggled like children. "You have terminal cancer" I said still giggling. "I know; that means I can sit anywhere I want" was his response.Later that evening after the party ended, the two of us were sitting alone, and I asked him if he was going back to his old job once he got better. "I’m not going to get better, Chris. I’m going to die." I tried to brush it off, but the way he said it, I knew he was serious.Still, I tired to make light of his situation."Come on, dude, you ain’t going to die. You’ll beat this shit like you beat it all the other times. Besides, cancer seems to like you. You two make such a beautiful pair."That made him laugh."No, I’m going to die. This shit is going to kill me this time."We sat for a while, and I told him that I loved him. As I got up to leave, we embraced, and he told me he loved me too.As I was driving home that night, I thought about how we first met. Mutual friends had introduced us back in the mid-80’s because both of us were dealing with extreme physical pain and I guess they figured we’d get along because of it. At that point, he had testicular cancer and I was suffering from cluster headaches. We became fast friends and we dubbed ourselves the pain brothers. We passed the time making light of each other’s physical aliments. "Ah, little pussy is having another headache? Maybe if you weren’t such a bad person, you wouldn’t be feeling this way" he’d say as I rolled around the floor writhing in agony sometimes puking on myself, "but you are a bad person so you are only getting what you deserve.""Fuck you, Hitler" was my go to response when I could actually formulate words. We went on like this for years.Eventually, my cluster headaches stopped, but Dave’s physical aliments continued and got worse. The only reason I wish my headaches didn’t stop is because of David. I felt I had left him in the lurch all alone without his pain brother to commiserate with. To his credit, he never held my newly pain free life against me ("But you are still a dick" he’d say), but I always felt bad whenever he was in pain and I wasn’t. It just didn’t seem right.Beyond that, dudeman always (and I do mean always) turned me onto music. And the best thing about his musical choices: he never stopped being interested in the here and now. Sure, he loved the stuff of old that we both cherished, but what really got his motor running was finding out about and turning his friends onto new stuff. I could always count on him to turn me on to something that I had never heard before. Over the two plus decades we knew each other, I can’t even begin to tell you how much music he opened my ears to (he found the "Here’s The Man With Music" intro song on the Bopst Show header), and his appetite for culture and devious wit will forever influence how I listen to things. When I was doing radio full time, I tried many times to get him to have his own radio show, but for whatever reason, I could never get him to it so for this week’s Bopst Show, I pay tribute to the man that always made my life better not only with music, but with every fiber of his being. So ladies and gentlemen, it is my great honor to present to you this week, The Castleman Show.I love you David. I’ll see you on the other side.BOPST— ∮∮∮ —Here are some shows I’m hustling at Balliceaux this week...NEXT NEW SHOW: 06/17/13 New show times. It’s a punk rock pizza party this week on The Mike & Judy Show! Unfortunately, Judy is still recovering from her own book-release party, but Mike Edison is joined in the studio by a few special rock ‘n’ roll guests. Eric Davidson, author of We Never Learn and member of New Bomb Turks, is in the studio talking about his book chronicling punk rock from 1988 – 2001. Mick Collins of The Gories and the Dirtbombs is in the studio to share a new Dirtbombs’ track, “Crazy For You”. Tune in for discussions about the CBGB Festival and the original club on the Bowery, and touring in Europe. Hear some weird, exciting stories about Crypt Records’ Tim Warren, as well as the state of punk rock in New York City today. This program has been brought to you by Roberta’s. “We’d play places that would let us play. That’s it! ‘Can we play here? Yes.’ And it turned into a scene. It wasn’t this vision…” — Mike Edison on The Mike & Judy Show
