Maria shares her journey in the industry since the 1990s, her shift away from aversive techniques, and her firm belief in evidence-based, force-free training. They discuss everything from bite inhibition and socialization windows to crate training, chew safety, surfaces, and the importance of ongoing enrichment. Maria shares the story of adopting her new puppy Tony—who overcame a traumatic jaw injury—and what it's like to manage teething, training, and building trust from day one. The episode also digs into real-world examples of behavior challenges, the role of medication in behavior cases, and why training is about teaching people just as much as their dogs. It's a fun, grounded reminder that dog training isn't a phase—it's a lifelong journey built on communication, patience, and mutual respect.

Juliana shares her unique journey into the world of animal training - from event planning at a humane society to discovering her calling through fostering rambunctious adolescent dogs. We also explore: ✅ What burnout looked and felt like for Juliana as a business owner and trainer ✅ How she reshaped her career (and life) to align with her strengths and values ✅ The emotional realities of working in a helping profession ✅ Why therapy, self-awareness, and redefining success are critical tools for sustainability ✅ The possibilities—and pitfalls—of building a digitally-based animal training business Juliana's insights will resonate with anyone who's ever questioned their capacity to “do it all,” and her vulnerability provides a roadmap for building a career with more intention, peace, and joy. Visit us at shapedbydog.com    Not seeing results in dog training? I'm breaking down why that happens and how layering your dog's learning is the key to creating real-world success. We often believe our dogs are “trained” when things look great in controlled settings but when connection disappears, distractions take over, or confidence fades in new environments, it's a sign that a layer of learning is missing. I'll walk you through how the layers of the 5C Pyramid build lasting reliability and focus, a personal story from my own training, and how shaping behavior through intentional layers leads to long-term success in agility, sports, and everyday life.   In this episode, you'll hear:   • Why your dog might be great in training games but struggle in real-world situations. • How building intentional layers in training leads to real-world success with your dog • The concept of “real world success” and how it evolves as your relationship with your dog grows. • A deep dive into the 5 Cs of dog training: Connection, Clarity, Confidence, Challenge, and Complexity. • The difference between a connected, driven, and detached dog and why that matters. • A powerful question to ask yourself in every training moment to stay aligned with your long-term goals. • How intentional layers build deep connection and lasting success. • A personal story about my own dog and how the layers of learning led us all the way to the world championships.   Crate Games: Get Crate Games Online - https://get.crategames.com/ Learn How To Play ItsYerChoice: Learn how to play the ItsYerChoice (IYC) Game - https://recallers.com/iycsummit-join/   Resources:   1. What does 25 years of dog training experience teach you? Stephanie O'Brien, owner of Dog Genius Canine Education, takes us on a fascinating journey through her evolution as a trainer—from growing up raising guide dogs to becoming an expert in protection sports.Stephanie's story offers a rare glimpse into how dog training has transformed over decades. Before YouTube tutorials and Instagram influencers existed, trainers learned through direct mentorship, VHS tapes shipped from Europe, and traveling to competitions. Her vivid recollections of discovering Belgian Ring sport for the first time and the thrill of taking bites from champion protection dogs showcase a passion that's carried her through an extraordinary career. The conversation explores pivotal moments that shaped her approach: apprenticeships with contrasting mentors, importing her first "real" Malinois from Belgium, and eventually moving to California where she built a thriving business training dogs for celebrities and television appearances. Through these experiences, Stephanie developed a balanced training philosophy that prioritizes understanding each dog as an individual. What makes this episode particularly valuable is Stephanie's honesty about the challenges trainers face—from navigating polarized training philosophies to managing self-doubt even decades into a successful career. Her perspective reminds us that great training isn't about rigid methodologies but rather building relationships and adapting to the dog in front of you.Whether you're a seasoned professional or simply love dogs, this conversation offers wisdom that only comes from decades of hands-on experience with thousands of dogs across multiple training disciplines. Once a dog has been selected Sunny likes to start the training process simply with body language, then adds leash pressure, toys and treats from there. We address what service teams should aspire to be and how much work goes into that level of reliability. In this episode in my series of Tales of Accidental Bird Dogs, I chat with Vanessa Carmean about the unexpected journey that started with her first German Shorthaired Pointer, Camo. After years with Labradors and a family health scare, Vanessa and her husband chose a pointing breed—though she had no idea what she was getting into. What began as a plan to do a little dove hunting turned into something much bigger. Vanessa shares how Camo's first Junior Hunter test revealed his natural talent, sparking her curiosity and passion for pointing dog training. Armed with YouTube and determination, she began training for Senior Hunter. There were lots of ups and downs along the way, and she eventually added more GSPs to the mix and became a breeder, hunt test judge, and field trial judge. We talk about her learning curve, her love for the sport, and the value of mentorship. Vanessa's story is a great reminder that kind words and encouragement can truly shape someone's path in the bird dog world. In this episode, Glenn and Pat explore the vital role of rhythm and rituals in dog training. These two elements, when intentionally used, can provide clarity and structure to the training process—both for the dog and the handler. The episode breaks down how rituals help dogs understand how to enter a scenario correctly. Whether it's a training session, a working environment, or a daily routine, consistent rituals reduce confusion, build engagement, and set clear expectations from the outset. Equally important is the idea of developing rhythm throughout your training, which ensures continuity, flow, and a sense of timing that strengthens communication. When applied properly, rhythm supports the integrity of your work and helps maintain focus and consistency over time. If you've ever felt your sessions were chaotic or that your dog was unsure about what's expected, this episode will help you refine your process and bring more balance and clarity to your training.
