Visit us at shapedbydog.com If you've ever had someone twist your training philosophy into something it's not, you've likely run into a Straw Man argument. In this episode, I'm breaking down ten of the most common ones aimed at positive reinforcement-based dog training, why they're not valid, and what you can do to create genuine conversations with people who hold a different view of dog training than you, all while staying centered and calm. In this episode, you'll hear: • What Straw Man arguments are and why they show up in dog training conversations. • Why these arguments misrepresent decades of science and practical application. • Ten common Straw Man claims made about positive reinforcement-based training and my response to each one - Straw Man Argument #1 - "Reinforcement trainers are just cookie pushers" - Straw Man Argument #2 - "Positive training won't work with high-drive dogs" - Straw Man Argument #3 - "Reinforcement takes too long, punishment is faster" - Straw Man Argument #4 - "Dogs need leaders, not more cookies" - Straw Man Argument #5 - "Dogs need punishment to learn what's wrong" - Straw Man Argument #6 - "Training only works if the dog can see the cookie" - Straw Man Argument #7 - "Positive trainers care more about the dog's emotion than outcomes" - Straw Man Argument #8 - "Your dog will never recall reliably without correction" - Straw Man Argument #9 - "A head halter is just another punishment tool" - Straw Man Argument #10 - "Positive trainers avoid punishment because they don't understand it" • How to stay centered, respond constructively, and keep conversations productive. In this episode, we decode the essential but misunderstood concept of "giving your dog a job." Far from a gimmick, it's the key to solving common behavior problems rooted in boredom and unspent instinct. We explain why your dog's natural drives, when left unchanneled, lead to anxiety, destructive chewing, and excessive barking—and how you can transform those very instincts into a source of focus and deep satisfaction. You'll get a practical, step-by-step guide to identifying your dog's innate "job role," whether they're a sniffer, a retriever, a herder, or a watcher. Learn how to implement simple, daily "work sessions" that build confidence, strengthen your bond, and create the mentally tired, happy hound you've always wanted. Building structure for your puppy in one of the best things you can do to help raise a happy, healthy, and obedient puppy. In this episode of Puppy Talk I discuss the why and how of puppy structure. Why?Structure creates calmness in the puppy.Structure creates an opportunity for the puppy to succeed, not failStructure helps you, the puppy owner, have more control over the puppy's behavior, obedience, and discipline. How?Stick to a routine: wake up, potty, short walk, training, eat, play, potty again, and nap.Your puppy is in school and needs a balance of math, English, history, and science. Recess can come after the other subjects.DO NOT replace the essential subjects with play and affection. In this episode, Mariano and Brent sit down with Josh Beckler of K9 Optima for a powerful and thoughtful conversation on the craft of dog training, the value of humility, and the systems that shape great trainers. Josh shares his unique journey—from developing an early bond with dogs, to a career in corporate investigations, and ultimately to becoming a respected voice in the dog training community. His background gives him a rare, investigative lens on behavior, communication, and assessment that few trainers possess.Together, we explore the importance of slowing down, observing honestly, and building structured systems that allow both trainers and clients to succeed. Josh breaks down how skills from interviewing, public speaking, and corporate work naturally transfer to dog training—and why many trainers underestimate the power of these cross-disciplinary tools. He also speaks candidly about the Dunning-Kruger effect, the role of humility in growth, and how criticism—when taken correctly—can become a catalyst for better work. The conversation moves beyond technique into the deeper layers of what it means to teach, parent, lead, and communicate effectively. Josh offers insight into navigating social media with authenticity, creating transparency in your training process, and finding your “true north” when the noise of the industry gets loud. We also dive into his upcoming book, The Infinite Approach, where he aims to give trainers and dog owners a more complete, adaptable way to understand behavior and problem-solve without rigid ideology.Whether you're a new trainer, a seasoned professional, or someone seeking a more thoughtful approach to behavior, this episode is full of perspective, honesty, and the reminder that great training starts with great self-awareness.Topics include:Josh's journey from early dog connections to corporate investigationsHow investigative interviewing skills translate to dog trainingThe rise of social media and its impact on trainersBuilding systems, structure, and clarity into your training businessHumility, the Dunning-Kruger effect, and embracing criticismTransparency and authenticity in your training processParenting lessons that crossover into dog behavior workThe philosophy behind The Infinite Approach and redefining dog trainingCreating community, case studies, and forward-thinking resourcesMariano Alvarez IG @UNTAMEDDOGCO www.untameddogco.com Phoenix, AZBrent LaBrada IG @CANISBEHAVIOR www.canisdogtraining.com Los Angeles, CAJosh Beckler IG @K9OPTIMA www.k9optima.comBay Area, CA

Josh sits down with longtime CGA member and founding supporter Marshall Anliker to talk hunting, dogs, and the power of community. Marshall shares how a blizzard goose hunt with his great-grandfather lit the fire for waterfowling, how that led him to British Labradors and Southern Oak Kennels, and why Cornerstone has been part of his last three dogs. From college days stacking classes around duck hunts to running a roofing company and training high-drive British Labs at a high level, Marshall opens up about genetics, discipline, reward timing, and what it really means to “train the dog in front of you.” If you're serious about building a steady, family-friendly hunting companion and you love hearing real stories from real CGA members, this episode is for you.Want to learn how to train your hunting dog with confidence?Visit: Cornerstone Gundog AcademyNeed gear for training your retriever, like collars, dog training dummies, and more?Visit: Retriever Training SupplyInterested in sponsoring the BuildFromHere Podcast?Fill out this form and tell us more about promoting your product, service, or brand.

Tired of ADHD strategies that don't work? Here's what actually does. FREE training here: https://programs.tracyotsuka.com/signup_____When Devene Godau adopted a retired racing greyhound, she thought she was just rescuing a dog. Instead, she found her purpose. What started as an effort to help an anxious greyhound with separation anxiety became a lesson in communication, connection, and compassion. Those lessons didn't just transform her career; they changed how she saw herself.A certified professional dog trainer with ADHD, Devene spent more than 25 years working with everyone from family pets to professional scent detection dogs for the TSA. She learned that dogs, much like humans, thrive when they feel safe, understood, and motivated — not shamed into obedience. Her work with scent detection dogs taught her that behavior isn't about control, it's about clarity. The same applies to people. Now through her platform The Distracted Dog Lover, Devene helps neurodivergent dog owners build stronger bonds with their pets using humor, empathy, and science-based, real-world strategies that actually work.In this conversation, Devene and Tracy talk about why traditional training methods often fail for ADHD owners, what clicker training can teach us about communication, and how dogs mirror our emotions in ways that reveal what we need to work on ourselves. Devene also shares how gamifying training makes it easier to stay consistent, why sniffing literally boosts serotonin and calms a dog's nervous system, and how the best kind of learning happens when you stop aiming for perfection and start enjoying the process.Resources:Website: https://distracteddoglover.com Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/devene-godau-cpdt-ka-b696a71a0 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/disney_devene Gerty: https://thegerty.com/?srsltid=AfmBOoqWlLvwRhiG3tP96j9mICCIcZSa98gj5w1YRsy4jUJxWbZZtk4W Send a Message: Your Name | Email | Message If this podcast helps you understand your ADHD brain, Shift helps you train it. In this foundational video, Ed Frawley shares his comprehensive dog training philosophy developed over a remarkable journey that began in the 1950s and spans more than 50 years of hands-on experience. Ed explains that effective training is common sense combined with a clear understanding of how dogs think as pack animals who genetically seek ranking order and view their human family as their pack. He emphasizes that establishing sound family pack structure accounts for 75% of solving behavioral problems, while obedience training represents only 25%—dogs must respect their handlers as pack leaders through fair, firm, and consistent control, as love alone cannot earn respect. | Links mentioned: The Power of Training Dogs with Markers: https://leerburg.com/marker-dvd.php | Training Dogs with Food Rewards: https://leerburg.com/food-dvd.php | Basic Dog Obedience: https://leerburg.com/302.htm
