Visit us at shapedbydog.com Hot Take: You don't need to say “stay” in dog training! I'm sharing how clear release cues give dogs greater clarity and confidence. I'll take you through how I introduce this concept early with my puppies, how Crate Games helps build a strong foundation, and what it all looks like in everyday training, including when working with more than one dog. When our dogs truly understand what's expected, they gain confidence and confident dogs make brilliant choices. In this episode, you'll hear: • Why I don't use the word “stay” and what inspired this episode. • How cues get eroded over time. • What “controlled behaviors” mean for dogs. • How I introduce the release word to my puppy. • What my dogs' cues are for leaving position (and why they don't need “stay”). • Why I never use “sit” to stop my dogs at the door. • Why I teach “go chill” separately from control positions. • Step-by-step training for clarity when working with two dogs. • The difference between outdated “stay” training and modern-day release cues. • Why Crate Games builds impulse control and clarity from the start. • How release cues help build reliability and understanding. What to listen for:“I don't just pet them, I go, ‘this is why you train the way you train, remember that'”Today, two-thirds of the Dames of Detection, Stacy Barnett and Crystal Wing, welcome back obedience trainer Petra Ford to talk about why she believes in a “you do you” approach to dog training. When her dog Zesty dropped eye contact during their first championship run, instead of demanding compliance, Petra simply said, "You do you,” acknowledging that forcing the moment would only add pressure to an already exhausted dog. This mindset shift from control to partnership transformed what could have been a frustrated correction into a moment of trust.Petra's approach challenges conventional wisdom at every turn. While others proof their dogs by setting them up to fail, she builds confidence by making her dogs right. When Zesty struggled with imperfect fronts just weeks before nationals, instead of drilling precision, Petra threw parties for effort. "Close enough, here's a cookie" became her mantra because she understood that confidence creates precision, not the other way around. This path hasn't been easy. Training in isolation, facing constant scrutiny, Petra has walked the lonely road of positive reinforcement in a sport increasingly dominated by punishment. But her results speak louder than critics: three different dogs, multiple championships, all trained through partnership rather than dominance.Petra encourages trainers to ask themselves, "Would I want to be my own teammate?" She treats her dogs as partners, not tools—reading their communication, respecting their limits, and celebrating their individuality. When the pressure mounts and 130 dogs compete for 20 spots, she doesn't add stress. Instead, she becomes her dog's safe space.Trust, not force. Not "do it my way," but simply: "you do you." In this episode, Jerry Bradshaw and Dr. Stewart Hilliard discuss: The influence of European sport dogs in early North American working dog training. Benefits and challenges of introducing KNPV-trained dogs to the American market. Evolution of Eastern European working dog trade. Sourcing and importing working dogs. Institutional breeding programs, increased costs, and decreased quality. The future of dog training with kynology. Key Takeaways: KNPV (Royal Dutch Police Dog Association) dogs were the gold standard for transitioning sport dogs to dual-purpose police dog prospects. KNPV dogs were not trained to distinguish between equipment and humans, which gave those early Malinois dogs a bad reputation. Dogs that come from a deprived background with limited experiences often need to be deprogrammed before they can be taught to forget, then taught to learn what they need to know. Don't kill your dog by playing with it. The dog's reward is not a toy; it's a reward. Toy implies play, and these are working dogs. Malinois and German Shepherd dogs are not fully adult dogs until 2.5-3. Younger dogs are more vulnerable to mistakes and stress, leaving you, as the trainer, with the technical burden of not making many mistakes. "I think the future is going to be agency-based breeding, heavily informed by scientific practice, but also with strong participation of practitioners - practical dog people who know how to produce results. Those are the agencies that are going to do really well." — Dr. Stewart Hilliard Contact Stewart: Website: https://www.caninetrainingsystems.com/ Book: Schutzhund, Theory and Training Methods - A Book by Susan Barwig and Stewart Hilliard, Ph.D. - https://www.caninetrainingsystems.com/product/B-SCH-BAR/Schutzhund-Theory-and-Training-Methods-A-Book-by-Susan-Barwig-and-Stewart-Hilliard-PhD Get Jerry's book Controlled Aggression on Amazon.com Contact Jerry: Website: controlledaggressionpodcast.com Email: JBradshaw@TarheelCanine.com Tarheel Canine Training: www.tarheelcanine.com YouTube: tarheelcanine Twitter: @tarheelcanine Instagram: @tarheelk9 Facebook: TarheelCanineTraining Protection Sports Website: psak9-as.org Patreon: patreon.com/controlledaggression Slideshare: Tarheel Canine Calendly: https://calendly.com/tarheelcanine Tarheel Canine Seminars: https://streetreadyk9.com/ Tarheel Canine Student Portal: https://tcstudentportal.com/ Sponsors: ALM K9 Equipment: almk9equipment.com PSA & American Schutzhund: psak9-as.org Tarheel Canine: tarheelcanine.com The Drive Company: https://thedriveco.com/ The Drive Company Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thedrive.co Find out more about Hold The Line Conference 2024 at https://htlk9.com/ Train hard, train smart, be safe. What to listen for:"I care about my dog's emotional state, how they're feeling, and how confident they are. And I work on that a lot."Two-thirds of the Dames of Detection, Stacy Barnett and Crystal Wing, sit down with obedience trainer Petra Ford, who unpacks the importance of seeing dogs as individuals, not assumptions!Real progress, she says, starts when you stop correcting and start connecting.Petra shares how letting go of labels like “nervous” transformed her relationship with her dog Zeal—and how trainers often project past experiences onto new dogs without realizing it. She encourages slowing down and objectively observing, not assuming. Each dog deserves to be seen for who they are, not who came before them.Through her work with a neurologically atypical dog, Petra developed calming strategies rooted in deep pressure, similar to techniques used for autistic children. These evolved into arousal “thermostat” cues that help her dogs self-regulate and perform with clarity and joy.Petra's training is driven by curiosity and persistence. She doesn't rely on recipes—she adapts, explores, and adjusts until the dog understands. Whether teaching a front or building confidence under ring pressure, her dogs learn through games, not grind. They don't just perform on command—they actually want to succeed, themselves. At the core of Petra's philosophy is respect: for the dog's emotional state, for their individuality, and for the bond they share. Titles may come, but the real reward is the connection.Because in the end, as Petra reminds us, training isn't about forcing the dog to meet our goals. Dr. Patricia McConnell is the GOAT of dog training. Among her books, the classic, The Other End of the Leash. She discusses the state of dog training today, and her feelings about a movement among a vocal and perhaps increasing minority to use shock and prong collars. She also talks about the magic relationship we have with dogs. […]
This week we're joined by Dog Behaviourist, Ross McCarthy from the Cambridge Institute of Dog Training and Behaviour (CIDBT). Ross has over 25 years experience of working with dogs nationwide and is London based. We chat about the old days when we met as being Ambassadors for the raw food company, Natural Instinct. We discuss why 70% of Britain's dogs are currently suffering from anxiety, why the rescues are now literally bursting, and why dogs are facing euthanasia through no fault of their own, just from a lack of appropriate training and understanding. We focus on the positives of how ‘things can only get better' looking at how the CIDBT offers accessible training and behaviour courses for dog owners to learn how to help others in a professional capacity to get the best out of their dogs. We talk about Ross's passion for Rottweilers, and how they've taught him so much on his own dog journey, and why experience enhances learning. Ross's aim is to make the world of dogs a happier, safer and better place - one thought is to introduce a test for new dog owners, in away like a driving test before you get behind the wheel. This podcast episode explores the evolution of dog training, highlighting the shift from punitive methods to positive reinforcement techniques. It discusses key figures in the field, the impact of historical events, and the growing understanding of canine behavior. The conversation emphasizes the importance of humane training methods and the future of dog training practices. Takeaways Dog training has evolved significantly over the past few decades. Many trainers are now using positive, reward-based techniques. The mantra 'from cruelty to kindness' reflects a major shift in training philosophy. Clever Hans's story highlighted the need for empirical study in animal behavior. Pavlov's classical conditioning laid the groundwork for understanding behavior. Thorndyke's law of effect explains how behaviors are reinforced. B.F. Skinner's work advanced the principles of learning in dog training. The rise of humane training methods began after World War II. Karen Pryor's book popularized clicker training and the use of positive reinforcement. Today's training methods are rooted in kindness and compassion.

What to listen for:“You're putting so much pressure on yourself, and that's impacting your dog.”Today, our hosts Robin Greubel, Stacy Barnett, and Crystal Wing chat about what they've been up to lately, including their recent experience at the Muscatatuck Open, a high-level canine detection seminar known for its complex scent theory drills and immersive training. They discuss how the seminar's intense setups—with full-body donor work, long-term odor problems, and unique hide placements—challenged both handlers and dogs in ways that left a lasting impact.Robin juggled certification tests and a 10-week-old Labrador while Crystal flew straight from early retirement into the dog training world's version of a dream tour! The Dames of Detection reflect on the Muscatatuck seminar: a high-level, all-inclusive training camp that delivered not just technically, but mentally and emotionally, as well.Muscatatuck was a series of complex challenges—from scent voids and convergence hides to managing large source odors. It was, as one student put it, transformational.Crystal, still raw from leaving her teaching career, shares how her pressure-sensitive dog Radish mirrored her inner state, teaching her the value of emotional regulation in handling. The “Hope Method” Of Dog Training: What Your Dog Is Really Learning When You're Not Teaching I'm sharing the 'hope method' of dog training and what your dog is really learning when you're not teaching. Dog trainers Meg and Thoma tackle your most pressing canine questions in this comprehensive Q&A episode packed with practical solutions for common behavioral challenges. When it comes to getting dogs to truly settle down, they reveal why constant food rewards often backfire, creating dogs that stare intensely rather than genuinely relax. Their tethering approach offers a refreshingly different alternative to the overused "place" command, allowing dogs to find calm on their own terms without the pressure of perfect obedience. "It's almost like forced meditation," Meg explains, highlighting how this technique helps dogs learn self-soothing skills that transfer to real-world situations. For those struggling with rescue dogs, their counterintuitive advice might surprise you: play hard to get. "The harder you try, the harder it gets," Meg shares, comparing relationship-building to those finger traps from childhood. Rather than forcing affection, they advocate for patient coexistence and discovering what genuinely brings your specific dog joy—not what you think dogs should enjoy. This approach respects a dog's need to feel invisible at times while building genuine trust. The episode dives deep into tool selection, crate training philosophies, and managing reactivity with nuanced approaches that consider each dog's temperament and developmental stage. Their discussion on van life with multiple dogs provides fascinating insights into creating sustainable routines in limited spaces, emphasizing the importance of insulation, power management, and organizational systems designed around canine needs. What sets this episode apart is the trainers' refreshingly honest perspective drawn from real-world experience rather than idealistic theories. Whether you're struggling with a reactive puppy, considering a second dog, or simply trying to understand why your training efforts aren't sticking, you'll find actionable guidance grounded in decades of hands-on work with thousands of dogs. Tune in to transform your relationship with your four-legged companion through clear communication and realistic expectations.

Sexier Than A Squirrel: Dog Training That Gets Real Life Results
Send us a textEver wondered why your dog performs perfectly at home but seems to forget everything when you're out in public? The secret might lie in understanding the ABCs of dog training.Dave, a veteran police dog trainer with over two decades of experience, breaks down this deceptively simple framework that has revolutionized how professionals approach dog training. Rather than focusing solely on correcting behaviors, the ABC model—Antecedent, Behavior, Consequence—provides multiple leverage points to create lasting change in your dog's responses. The conversation dives deep into the "three A's" that precede any behavior: Arousal (your dog's energy level), Area (the training environment), and Actions (what you and others are doing). Through vivid examples from both high-stakes police work and everyday training scenarios, Dave illustrates how manipulating these elements can transform seemingly stubborn behavioral issues without resorting to punishment. One particularly fascinating insight reveals how what we perceive as punishment might actually be reinforcing to our dogs—like the Malinois who fights harder against the leash correction because the struggle itself is rewarding. This perspective shift helps explain why some training approaches backfire despite our best intentions.Whether you're working with a high-drive working dog or a family pet, understanding this framework empowers you to troubleshoot training challenges more effectively. By becoming aware of how these elements interact, you'll gain new tools to set your dog up for success rather than repeatedly correcting failures.Ready to transform your approach to dog training?
