Tired of ADHD strategies that don't work? Here's what actually does. FREE training here: https://programs.tracyotsuka.com/signup_____When Devene Godau adopted a retired racing greyhound, she thought she was just rescuing a dog. Instead, she found her purpose. What started as an effort to help an anxious greyhound with separation anxiety became a lesson in communication, connection, and compassion. Those lessons didn't just transform her career; they changed how she saw herself.A certified professional dog trainer with ADHD, Devene spent more than 25 years working with everyone from family pets to professional scent detection dogs for the TSA. She learned that dogs, much like humans, thrive when they feel safe, understood, and motivated — not shamed into obedience. Her work with scent detection dogs taught her that behavior isn't about control, it's about clarity. The same applies to people. Now through her platform The Distracted Dog Lover, Devene helps neurodivergent dog owners build stronger bonds with their pets using humor, empathy, and science-based, real-world strategies that actually work.In this conversation, Devene and Tracy talk about why traditional training methods often fail for ADHD owners, what clicker training can teach us about communication, and how dogs mirror our emotions in ways that reveal what we need to work on ourselves. Devene also shares how gamifying training makes it easier to stay consistent, why sniffing literally boosts serotonin and calms a dog's nervous system, and how the best kind of learning happens when you stop aiming for perfection and start enjoying the process.Resources:Website: https://distracteddoglover.com Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/devene-godau-cpdt-ka-b696a71a0 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/disney_devene Gerty: https://thegerty.com/?srsltid=AfmBOoqWlLvwRhiG3tP96j9mICCIcZSa98gj5w1YRsy4jUJxWbZZtk4W Send a Message: Your Name | Email | Message If this podcast helps you understand your ADHD brain, Shift helps you train it. In this foundational video, Ed Frawley shares his comprehensive dog training philosophy developed over a remarkable journey that began in the 1950s and spans more than 50 years of hands-on experience. Ed explains that effective training is common sense combined with a clear understanding of how dogs think as pack animals who genetically seek ranking order and view their human family as their pack. He emphasizes that establishing sound family pack structure accounts for 75% of solving behavioral problems, while obedience training represents only 25%—dogs must respect their handlers as pack leaders through fair, firm, and consistent control, as love alone cannot earn respect. | Links mentioned: The Power of Training Dogs with Markers: https://leerburg.com/marker-dvd.php | Training Dogs with Food Rewards: https://leerburg.com/food-dvd.php | Basic Dog Obedience: https://leerburg.com/302.htm

SEND US A QUESTION OR TOPIC FOR A FUTURE SHOW...Does your dog turn into a Pogo stick every time someone walks through the door? In this episode of the KISS Dog Training podcast, we're breaking down why dogs jump up and how to teach better behaviors. We'll start by exploring the reasons behind this common behavior — from over-stimulation to simple reinforcement (because, let's be honest, it works!). You'll learn why we need to normalize greetings and make meeting people a little less exciting. Then, we'll get hands-on with skill-building. I'll walk you through teaching your dog to “sit to say please” — the foundation for polite greetings — and introduce the Turn Around Game, first off-leash and then on-leash, with two easy-to-follow video demonstrations. We'll also talk about what to do when your dog makes a mistake. Plus, we'll go over the Proper Greet, both when you have a helper and when you're practicing solo (with another helpful video). Finally, we'll wrap it all up by connecting these skills to real-world success — and how teaching calm, proper greetings can help keep dogs in happy homes and out of shelters.

You'll discover how to recognize your puppy's “tells,” adjust routines, supervision, and expectations and bring clarity and confidence back to potty training for both you and your puppy.   In this episode, you'll hear:   • Why a “potty trained” puppy might still have accidents in the house. • How the H.O.T. Method helps set every puppy up for success. • How accidents could signal a possible health issue and how to rule them out. • Why some puppies avoid going outside in certain weather or on specific surfaces. • How setting realistic expectations helps both you and your puppy. • The connection between supervision, freedom, and potty training progress. • The difference between managing behavior and actually training it. • How to recognize your puppy's “tells” and teach them to communicate. • Examples of some of my own dog's “tells.”  • Simple routines that make potty training consistent and reliable. • Why proper clean-up prevents repeat accidents. • How emotions or scolding can create confusion. • What might be reinforcing your puppy's indoor accidents. • How to use a positive interrupter to redirect accidents before they happen. • Why celebrating small wins builds lasting success. • How to see every accident as feedback and keep progress moving forward.   Resources:   1. What to listen for:Two-thirds of The Dames of Detection, Robin Greubel and Stacy Barnett, welcome Steve White, a veteran law enforcement K9 trainer whose 46-year career began in military working dog handling in 1975.Steve discusses the challenges facing modern police canine programs, particularly how vendor-driven training models often prioritize efficiency over optimization, which creates sessions where handlers log hours without meaningful individual development.Central to Steve's philosophy is building fluency in component behaviors before chaining them together. He emphasizes the "search-locate-report" sequence as the foundation of detection work, and warns against the common mistake of teaching dogs to retrieve training aids initially. This approach creates problems through the “law of primacy:” dogs default to their earliest learned behaviors under stress, leading to dangerous outcomes like consuming narcotics or explosives.Steve draws a critical distinction between "search dogs" and "examination dogs." Medical detection dogs must systematically examine each sample rather than hunting for the strongest odor source; a dog that vaults past a Stage 1 cancer sample to alert on Stage 4 creates catastrophic consequences. Similarly, explosive detection work often requires methodical examination of luggage or spaces where missing a threat is unacceptable.Steve traces his evolution from using sport castoff dogs from Europe to developing selection criteria focused on "self-righting" dogs: calm, confident animals who never seek fights but finish them. He shows us why it's so important to understand the trade-offs inherent in every training decision! Key Topics:Steve's Background and Career Evolution (03:10)Modern Police K9 Training Challenges (08:02)European Dog Selection and Trade-offs (16:03)The Search-Locate-Report Chain (27:09)Law of Primacy in Dog Training (28:19)Building Chains Without Fluency (30:29)German Tracking Experiments and Training Methods (37:00)Training Methods and Trade-offs (44:10)Dogs as Tools of Force in Law Enforcement (48:20) Resources:You can find Steve White:Proactive K9 WebsiteProactive K9 Website Forms USPCA YouTube Channel: Where you can find Steve's three-part series on odor/scent fundamentals, a 1000-hour eyes presentation where he talks about the eight indicators of dogs being on odor, and Robin's presentations about the recipe for building a great training session. We want to hear from you:Check out the K9 Detection Collaborative FB page and comment on the episode post!K9Sensus Detection Dog Trainer AcademyK9Sensus Foundation can be found on Facebook and Instagram.
