Heather Wallace and I discuss the topic of getting burnt out with your bird dog training, testing, and trialing. We talk about two main kinds of burn out. The first is the feeling of mental exhaustion that can come when your training is not going well, or you are not having a lot of success in tests or trials.    The second is the fatigue from all the logistics – setting up training sessions, lining up gunners, getting birds, planning around your work schedule, not to mention all of the driving that's involved.   We hope you relate to this honest conversation about the realities of pursuing these hobbies with our bird dogs.   You can find Heather on Facebook or Instagram at @hlw_outdoors. -- The Accidental Bird Dog Podcast is sponsored by OnX Hunt and part of the HerUpland Podcast Network.

In this episode of the Animal Training Academy Podcast, host Ryan Cartlidge is joined by returning guest Michael Shikashio for a wide-ranging conversation about professionalism, community, and the future of the dog training industry. Michael Shikashio is the founder of AggressiveDog.com, a leading expert in working with aggression cases, a five-time past President of the IAABC, the 2020 APTT Member of the Year, and host of The Bitey End of the Dog podcast. Drawing on decades of experience supporting trainers across more than 20 countries, Michael brings a global, grounded perspective to the challenges and opportunities facing the profession today. Together, Ryan and Michael explore the vision behind the Canis Conference - a bold new event designed to bring trainers, behavior consultants, veterinarians, shelter professionals, scientists, and dog sports enthusiasts together under one roof. Michael shares how Canis was born from a desire to dismantle silos, reduce divisiveness, and create a space where learning, collaboration, and respectful dialogue can flourish across differing backgrounds and methodologies. The conversation moves well beyond conference planning, diving into the emotional and professional toll of online conflict, social media algorithms, and the rise of polarized "team" identities within the dog training world. Michael speaks candidly about criticism, controversy, and resilience, offering powerful insights for both emerging and established professionals navigating public discourse, online platforms, and ethical responsibility. Throughout the episode, the emphasis remains on compassion, professionalism, and the importance of face-to-face connection in restoring trust - both within the industry and with the public we serve. In this episode, we discuss: The vision and structure of the Canis Conference and its festival-style, multi-disciplinary approach Why safety, inclusion, and professionalism matter more than ever in the dog training industry The impact of social media algorithms on conflict, identity, and professional behavior Navigating criticism, controversy, and online hostility with integrity and resilience Moving beyond divisive labels to find shared values and common ground The power of in-person connection to rebuild trust, empathy, and collaboration Whether you are a new trainer finding your voice, a seasoned professional reflecting on your role in the wider community, or someone longing for a more respectful and united industry, this episode offers clarity, courage, and a hopeful vision for where we go next - together. You scroll. One trainer says never let your dog look at the trigger.Another says your dog has to look at the trigger. Both sound confident. Both sound science-y. Now you're more confused than when you started. In this episode, Emily and Claire talk about why dog training advice feels like such a mess, and how “good” advice can still be the wrong advice when it's ripped out of context and handed to every dog on the internet. This is your reminder that there is no single right answer. The goal isn't perfect protocol compliance. It's figuring out what actually works for your dog, your brain, and your real life.If dog training content has ever made you feel overwhelmed, guilty, or like you somehow missed the orientation… you're not alone.TLDL (too long, didn't listen): 3 Key Takeaways 1️⃣ Confident delivery does not equal correct advice – Someone sounding sure on the internet tells you nothing about whether their advice fits your dog, your skills, or your situation.2️⃣ Context matters more than the technique – The same strategy can help one dog, stress out another, and quietly blow up a third. That doesn't mean the tool is magic or trash. It means context is doing the heavy lifting.3️⃣ Content made for the masses misses you as an individual – You don't need to push through discomfort just because the internet says a protocol “should” work. For the full episode show notes, including the resources mentioned in this episode, go here.More from Pet HarmonyPet Parents: enrichment ideas and practical behavior tips

What to listen for:Our hosts, Robin Greubel and Stacy Barnett, sit down with canine cognition researcher Dr. Jennifer Essler. She unpacks her journey from coding Capuchin monkey videos in a windowless lab to studying fairness in wolves and dogs.Starting with music studies before discovering comparative psychology, Essler's academic trajectory took her from Georgia State's primate labs to hand-raised wolf packs in Vienna's Wolf Science Center. It's a unique research environment that controls for lifestyle differences between wolves and dogs by raising both species identically in packs. As a result, you can isolate domestication effects from environmental variables. The wolves, however, proved far more challenging subjects than primates, requiring complete experimental apparatus redesigns after initial safety failures. Her inequity aversion research uncovered pretty interesting species differences: wolves, like primates, showed quality sensitivity by refusing to work when partners received superior rewards.Dogs, conversely, accepted any reward as long as they received something, possibly reflecting their domestication-driven tolerance for human-directed work, or their reduced attention to partner outcomes.Robin, Stacy, and Dr. Essler discuss the practical implications this finding has for multi-dog training scenarios and reinforcement strategies.Essler's transition to Penn Vet Working Dog Center brought her expertise to practical applications: ovarian cancer detection, COVID-19 screening, and spotted lanternfly detection. On this episode of Dog Works Radio, professional dog trainers from Alaska Dog Works share practical dog training tips, discuss common dog behavior problems, and explain how positive dog training and dog training consistency create better behavior at home. In this episode of Dog Works Radio, the hosts delve into the importance of engagement in dog training, emphasizing that a dog's distraction often stems from boredom rather than stubbornness. They introduce the concept of turning training into a game, which not only makes the process enjoyable for the dog but also enhances learning and reliability. The discussion highlights the three C's of effective training: clear criteria, meaningful consequences, and consistency, and how these principles can be integrated into play-based training to foster a stronger bond between dogs and their owners. The hosts explain that play is not chaotic but rather a structured way to engage dogs, making them more likely to choose their owners over distractions. They provide practical examples of training games that can be easily implemented without special equipment, reinforcing the idea that fun and effective training can coexist. The episode concludes with a reminder that training should feel like a relationship rather than a chore, encouraging listeners to adopt a playful approach to dog training for better results. I've done several episodes recently on the responsibility of raising a puppy. The main thing to remember once you take ownership of a puppy is that they need obedience training, and you have to practice with them. Follow the guidelines below to improve your practice sessions and the predictability of the puppy's learning of obedience skills.Daily practice is essential. Practicing once in a while will not work. You have to practice correctly, the way a professional dog trainer has taught you. Short training sessions several times a day are better than a single long session.RESOURCES:Podcast Website: http://puppytalkpodcast.comSponsor Website: http://www.topgundogtraining.comDale's books: https://www.amazon.com/author/dalebuchanan Top Gun Dog Training in Huntsville, Alabama. In this episode of the USA Dog Behavior Podcast, we challenge one of the most ingrained misconceptions in the world of dog ownership: the idea of the "mean dog." Scott Sheaffer reveals why aggression in dogs is rarely a character flaw, but almost always a symptom rooted in fear. Diving deep into the critical difference between labeling a dog "aggressive" and understanding their specific fears, this episode will transform your perspective on your dog's challenging behaviors. You'll learn why a generalized label like "aggressive" is as unhelpful as telling a doctor you're simply "sick," and why identifying precise behavioral triggers is key to compassionate and effective intervention.Scott breaks down the 7 common types of dog aggression, from fear aggression and resource guarding to leash reactivity and pain-induced responses, explaining how each type is an attempt by your dog to cope with perceived threats. Discover what a behavioral trigger truly is and, most importantly, what you can do with this knowledge. Instead of punishing symptoms, learn how to identify what truly scares your dog and how to address that underlying fear with positive, humane methods. Tune in to move beyond the myth and build a deeper, more trusting relationship with your canine companion.Subscribe for more bite-sized episodes and visit USADogBehavior.com for additional resources!Find us at USADogBehavior.com.Follow us on Facebook.DisclaimerThis podcast is for educational purposes only and is not a substitute for professional advice.
