More Potty Training Tips

Puppy Talk

People call me to discuss puppy training, and their entire focus is on potty training. This happens a lot. The goal of this episode is to shift new puppy owners' focus to the bigger picture of raising a puppy beyond potty training and crate training.A dog trainer can only provide tips on potty training, crate training, play biting, and other issues because we don't live with the dog. Most of the unwanted behavior stems from the environment and from the owners' lack of leadership. The bigger picture includes:Setting rules and boundaries, Creating a structured scheduleObedience trainingLeash trainingSocializationIt's impossible to potty train a puppy without all of these elements of raising a puppy. Work on everything at once, and you will spend very little time on potty training. Two things in particular help with potty training: 1) when a puppy can stay in one place, and 2) when your puppy is tired. The main thing you need to do for effective potty training is to control the puppies' space inside the house and NEVER take your eyes off of them unless they are in a crate just big enough for them to lie down. Above all, get rid of pee pads. PRO TIP: Monitor their water intake by giving them 1 ounce per pound of body weight. If your puppy weighs 10 lbs, give them 10 oz of water throughout the day. That means about 2 ounces of water five times a day. After they take a drink, they will need to go potty 2-3 times within the next hour. Support Dixie's Fight Against Heart Disease. Donate here. How Much Should a Dog Trainer Charge? | Dog Training Pricing Without Burnout

Let's Talk Dog Business

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 31, 2025 28:46

DESCRIPTION Are you stuck on the pricing hamster wheel in your dog business – running classes, squeezing in 1:1s, but still not paying yourself properly? Today, Jo & Vicky take a more in-depth look at how much a dog trainer should charge. They unpack why asking “What are other trainers charging?” is the wrong starting point, how to work out what you need to take home, and what it really means when your current prices demand you to take on 40+ new clients a month just to survive.  You will further hone how you assess what you charge and understand why high-ticket 1:1 services can be a smarter first-phase strategy than low-ticket classes.  We've got a brand-new business health check for you - it´ll show you exactly where your business is working really fucking well, and where you are haemorrhaging time, money and energy - all in the time it takes to make a cuppa. Just click the link to take our business health check quiz -https://quiz.caninebusinessacademy.com/health-check  KEY TAKEAWAYS Knowing “how much dog trainers charge” is useless. What you charge needs to start from what you personally need to take home. Look at your current services, pick the one that sells best and figure out how many of those you need to sell per month. When you do the maths and realise you need 40+ new clients a month, you know your business model is not viable. Your capacity isn't just about "hours in the diary” – it's childcare, dogs, clubs, energy levels, and when you actually work best. Your pricing has to reflect your real life, not a fantasy schedule. The idea “clients will only come at evenings and weekends” is wrong. Jo & Vicky explain how to identify and actively attract people who can train during the day. Classes that don't fill, or super‑cheap sessions e.g. £3 drop‑ins, create a lose–lose situation. They drain your time and energy, slash what client´s think your time is worth and rarely deliver good results so you put clients off rather than tempting them to book more.  High‑ticket, 1:1 offers make it easier to hit your income goals with fewer clients. You provide far better support, protect your time and avoid burnout.  Life will keep changing - kids, health, travel, regulations, overheads – so don´t lock yourself into an inflexible model that only works for one perfect season of your life.  BEST MOMENTS “Rather than what should I charge? They ask, what do people charge? So, I can copy.” “Think to yourself, Is that realistic. How much of you does that take up? Time wise, energy wise?” “We've got to be offering something that is going to be getting people a good result.” “Sometimes life happens to you as well, and your time gets taken away. So, things have to adapt.” SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 Email: hello@caninebusinessacademy.com ABOUT THE HOSTS We're Jo Moorcroft and Vicky Davies. Send us a textWhat if the keys to calmer, clearer dog training are hiding in a muddy field at dawn?In this episode, we sit down with a farm-animal vet who swapped spotless theatres for open skies and on-call chaos. She walks us through the reality of rural practice - live calves at sunrise, emergency lambings, tea-stop triage, and the quiet skill of handling animals without force or fear. From those stories come the lessons every dog owner needs: • How reading body language becomes second nature • Why space is a cue and how stepping ahead or behind a shoulder can turn movement on like a switch • How pen size, positioning, and calm energy make handling safer and more effective • Why one well-trained dog can steady nervous sheep better than three people • How preparation and restraint change outcomes - whether it's a surgical success or the weight of a loss under anaesthesiaThen we connect the dots.Reluctant horses become blueprints for confidence games. Herding principles translate directly into agility handling, leash work, recall, and settling in busy environments. Working collies, kelpies, and huntaways show what clarity, timing, and resilience look like in motion and how the same principles transform everyday pet training.By the end, you'll understand why “stock sense” isn't just for farmers. It's a universal animal language - one that takes the chaos out of training and replaces it with calm, connection, and confidence. If this sparks ideas for your own training, share the episode, hit follow, and drop a quick review.Support the showIf you're loving the podcast, you'll love our NEW Sexier than a Squirrel Dog Training Challenge even more! We begin by dismantling the common myth of dogs viewing babies as prey, explaining instead how canine mentality leads to curiosity, not aggression, when a new family member arrives. You'll understand why a dog's confusion stems from a baby's strange movements and sounds, not malicious intent. We then move beyond theory into an actionable timeline. Learn why the crawling toddler stage is far more critical for supervision than the newborn period, and gain concrete strategies for successful introductions, creating safe spaces, and reading your dog's stress signals. This episode is a mix of two things. A full recap of a killer Christmas weekend with Stormy Crook and Aiden, and then a real talk discussion on using treats in retriever training. I start with why a simple comment I left on a Facebook video turned into a bigger conversation. The video showed a young pup being sent to a place board using treats, and I explain why I personally avoid treats with average to high drive retrievers. I get into intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation, why I want my dog working for the relationship and teamwork, and why I believe that foundation matters later when you are asking a dog to trust you on blinds and fight factors like wind and pressure. I am also going to ask Chris Jobman about this directly on the Flatlander Kennels Podcast, and I am open to being corrected. Before we get to that, I take you through one of my favorite stretches of the year, Christmas break, Mallard season, and the obsessive nature of waterfowl hunting. Then I break down an unforgettable weekend hosting Stormy and Aiden. We hunted hard, dealt with ice, ran the boat where other guys could not, and ended up with back to back three man Mallard limits with a bunch of feet down finishes. It was one of those rare weekends where expectations were low, the hunts were incredible, and everything came together. Wives had a great weekend too, and the new muck room got put to use the way it was meant to be used. Partners Shotty Gear

The conversation focuses on creating a more structured, peaceful environment for the dog, setting realistic expectations, and recognizing small wins along the way. They wrap up by outlining clear goals for future training sessions, emphasizing consistency, patience, and relationship-building as the foundation for helping reactive dogs feel safer and more confident in their world. This episode is a must-listen for anyone working through reactivity, struggling with handling issues, or looking to better understand their dog's behavior from a training-first perspective.Support the showFollow Us On Instagram: @thinklikeadogpodcast @Mirrorimagek9 @OzzieAlbiesFoundation Work with Mirror Image K9 here: https://www.mirrorimagek9.com/contactusBe Our Guest: https://www.thinklikeadogpodcast.com Learn More About The Best Chance Program: https://www.ozziealbiesfoundation.org/

Visit us at shapedbydog.com   When a new puppy arrives, the change in routine can create big feelings for an adult dog who has been part of every training session. Behaviors that look surprising are often signs of stress rather than spite or defiance. When we stay curious, it becomes easier to notice what our dogs may be trying to communicate. I'm sharing simple ways to support your adult dog so they can feel calm and confident while you focus on training your new puppy.   In this episode, you'll hear:   • Why dogs are not capable of spite the way we imagine. • Two questions to ask ourselves that shift how we understand behavior. • My student's story about an adult dog's unexpected behavior. • The cognitive bias behind assuming dogs are 'spiteful.' • Why curiosity strengthens connection and removes blame. • How stress changes physiology, with 2 personal real life examples. • The importance of ruling out medical conditions before assuming behavior issues. • Other stressors that can affect behavior. • How to support your adult dog during the puppy transition using the 3 E's (Exercise, Engagement, Enrichment). • A step-by-step plan to create calm and confidence for your older dog while your puppy is being trained. • How to use Hot Zones, Crate Games, and relaxation strategies to prevent stress in your adult dog. • The power of choosing curiosity to understand what your dog is communicating.   Get Crate Games Online: Crate Games Online - https://get.crategames.com/   Resources:   1. Fear doesn't mean stop; it usually means go. Meg sits down with trainer and coach Oscar Mora to trace the real path from a steady aerospace paycheck to a ranch built for teaching, trialing, and building a club where honest feedback and consistent reps change both dogs and handlers. We talk about the moment his wife said “it's time,” the practical signs he watched before quitting, and how discomfort became a compass for growth rather than a reason to freeze. From there we dive into the craft. Oscar breaks down why pet skills and sport skills speak the same language—clean markers, fair criteria, and rewards that match the dog in front of you. He lays out how to get into sport without weekly decoy access by focusing on obedience, neutrality, and structured play. We explore off-breeds in sport, what a Corso can teach a handler about patience and pressure, and how finishing something with the dog you have often builds more skill than endlessly chasing a “perfect” prospect.Puppy selection gets specific: confidence over defensiveness, love of chase, possession, and full grips. For dogs with too much gas, he explains how to install breaks early so the dog can think under conflict—like clearing a jump with a toy screaming from behind. We get candid about social media pressure, why trainers should serve clients instead of peers, and how a culture of private, constructive critique grows people faster than public takedowns. Most importantly, we show how play isn't just fun; it's a system for building engagement, solving reactivity, and turning stress into skills that hold up in real life.Stick around for details on Oscar's upcoming course, a free newsletter that translates training videos into step-by-step takeaways, and a two-day play workshop on February 21–22 in Upland designed for pet owners and aspiring sport handlers alike. If this conversation helps you, subscribe, share with a friend, and leave a quick review—then tell us the one skill you're training this week.To sign up for Oscar's upcoming workshops, check out his website here.Visit us on the website here to see what we've got going on and how you can join our pack of good dogs and owners.

Sometimes I'll take choice away if I think it's the right thing for the dogs. Sometimes I'll give choice. And sometimes I'll just stop working on a problem altogether… It depends. That's what this live is about - choices I make for Tye, depending on the circumstance.   Follow my training! Instagram The High Drive Dog More online training! Fenzi Dog Sports Academy

Tired of ADHD strategies that don't work? Here's what actually does. FREE training here: https://programs.tracyotsuka.com/signup_____When Devene Godau adopted a retired racing greyhound, she thought she was just rescuing a dog. Instead, she found her purpose. What started as an effort to help an anxious greyhound with separation anxiety became a lesson in communication, connection, and compassion. Those lessons didn't just transform her career; they changed how she saw herself.A certified professional dog trainer with ADHD, Devene spent more than 25 years working with everyone from family pets to professional scent detection dogs for the TSA. She learned that dogs, much like humans, thrive when they feel safe, understood, and motivated — not shamed into obedience. Her work with scent detection dogs taught her that behavior isn't about control, it's about clarity. The same applies to people. Now through her platform The Distracted Dog Lover, Devene helps neurodivergent dog owners build stronger bonds with their pets using humor, empathy, and science-based, real-world strategies that actually work.In this conversation, Devene and Tracy talk about why traditional training methods often fail for ADHD owners, what clicker training can teach us about communication, and how dogs mirror our emotions in ways that reveal what we need to work on ourselves. Devene also shares how gamifying training makes it easier to stay consistent, why sniffing literally boosts serotonin and calms a dog's nervous system, and how the best kind of learning happens when you stop aiming for perfection and start enjoying the process.Resources:Website: https://distracteddoglover.com Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/devene-godau-cpdt-ka-b696a71a0 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/disney_devene Gerty: https://thegerty.com/?srsltid=AfmBOoqWlLvwRhiG3tP96j9mICCIcZSa98gj5w1YRsy4jUJxWbZZtk4W Send a Message: Your Name | Email | Message If this podcast helps you understand your ADHD brain, Shift helps you train it.
