SEND US A QUESTION OR TOPIC FOR A FUTURE SHOW...Does your dog turn into a Pogo stick every time someone walks through the door? In this episode of the KISS Dog Training podcast, we're breaking down why dogs jump up and how to teach better behaviors. We'll start by exploring the reasons behind this common behavior — from over-stimulation to simple reinforcement (because, let's be honest, it works!). You'll learn why we need to normalize greetings and make meeting people a little less exciting. Then, we'll get hands-on with skill-building. I'll walk you through teaching your dog to “sit to say please” — the foundation for polite greetings — and introduce the Turn Around Game, first off-leash and then on-leash, with two easy-to-follow video demonstrations. We'll also talk about what to do when your dog makes a mistake. Plus, we'll go over the Proper Greet, both when you have a helper and when you're practicing solo (with another helpful video). Finally, we'll wrap it all up by connecting these skills to real-world success — and how teaching calm, proper greetings can help keep dogs in happy homes and out of shelters.

That frantic, hilarious burst of energy where your dog becomes a blur of fur is one of the most universal—and puzzling—dog behaviors out there. But what are the zoomies, really? Case + Cass share stories from Cass' guide dog training journey with her new partner, Mr. A, and celebrate graduation in part 2!
What to listen for:Two-thirds of The Dames of Detection, Robin Greubel and Stacy Barnett, welcome Steve White, a veteran law enforcement K9 trainer whose 46-year career began in military working dog handling in 1975.Steve discusses the challenges facing modern police canine programs, particularly how vendor-driven training models often prioritize efficiency over optimization, which creates sessions where handlers log hours without meaningful individual development.Central to Steve's philosophy is building fluency in component behaviors before chaining them together. He emphasizes the "search-locate-report" sequence as the foundation of detection work, and warns against the common mistake of teaching dogs to retrieve training aids initially. This approach creates problems through the “law of primacy:” dogs default to their earliest learned behaviors under stress, leading to dangerous outcomes like consuming narcotics or explosives.Steve draws a critical distinction between "search dogs" and "examination dogs." Medical detection dogs must systematically examine each sample rather than hunting for the strongest odor source; a dog that vaults past a Stage 1 cancer sample to alert on Stage 4 creates catastrophic consequences. Similarly, explosive detection work often requires methodical examination of luggage or spaces where missing a threat is unacceptable.Steve traces his evolution from using sport castoff dogs from Europe to developing selection criteria focused on "self-righting" dogs: calm, confident animals who never seek fights but finish them. He shows us why it's so important to understand the trade-offs inherent in every training decision! Many people get confused when it comes to defining dog training. This episode should clear that up for you. Here is what we will cover today:Obedience Training, also known as dog training, involves teaching basic commands such as sit, down, and stay. Obedience training is what most people refer to when discussing dog training.Although dog training is used by almost everyone across a broad spectrum, including veterinarians and doggie daycare, “Your dog needs training”…when in fact they need Behavior ModificationBehavior Modification (BeMod) is a systematic approach to change unwanted severe behaviors such as fear, anxiety, stress, or aggression. BeMod is not ideal for young puppies.BeMod works best when there is a solid foundation of basic obedience. BeMod is very intense and requires a considerable amount of time. The outcome is unpredictable. There are no guarantees. Too often we put too much focus on the end result of catching game. But the process itself is just as valuable, sometimes even more so. If the process is done correctly the end result is just the icing on the cake. If done properly it makes the end result much more gratifying. The journey is built on the bond forged during this time. Howdy there Bookshelvers. Autumn is approaching rapidly. And whilst you're fishing out your pullovers and slurping "pumpkin spiced" everything we've got an absolute treat for you! This week we are thrilled to welcome the amazing Kay Attwood, author of Canine Cognitive Skills! Kay's journey is interesting and inspiring in equal measure and we marvel at her passion and dedication to her craft. Among a whole load of amazing stories we hear how persistent students led her to get creative, leading to a profound discovery about cognitive skills and their application. We talk about how a trainer's job evolves beyond basic obedience. We discuss kay's "lightbulb moment" when she realized that asking dogs to think could solve problems that other training techniques alone couldn't touch. We delve into the concept of canine cognitive skills and find out how having owners bursting into laughter can also lead to them accidentally becoming better trainers! It's an infectious mix of fun and science that has created incredible longevity in her classes—from playful puppies to calm senior dogs. Steve and Corrin also talk through the areas of the book that stand out as well as discussing a recent setback for poor little Penguin ☹ So come on in, get comfy, and get some joy and creativity in those eager lug holes.Links:Buy a copy of Kays book Find out all about Kays TrainingDOGx TicketsLink to the ATA Podcast discussed on the show

Every dog trainer's journey begins somewhere, and for Emma from Raven K9 Dog Training, that foundation was built through pack walking. In this conversation, Emma shares how she transitioned from a customer service manager in Australia to a successful dog trainer in the UK, revealing the unexpected lessons that shaped her training philosophy. What makes Emma's approach so refreshing is her balanced perspective that honors dogs as individuals while maintaining clear expectations. She details how adopting Raven, a Dutch Shepherd with a serious history of dog reactivity, led her to explore e-collar training and develop a nuanced understanding of canine behavior. Rather than adhering to a single methodology, Emma draws from both pet and sport dog experiences to create a comprehensive training toolkit. One of the most powerful insights Emma offers is her rejection of the "prison phase" common in many training programs. Instead of keeping dogs in a perpetual training state, she advocates for allowing them time to decompress, enjoy walks, and learn to make appropriate decisions around other dogs. This approach has proven particularly effective with reactive dogs who need to learn real-world skills beyond obedience commands.Emma's method for building motivation is equally thoughtful—starting with minimal expectations and rewarding dogs simply for proximity before gradually shaping into sustained engagement. She explains how she pairs tools like e-collars and prong collars with positive experiences rather than jumping straight to correction, creating dogs that understand boundaries while maintaining enthusiasm for training.Whether you're struggling with a reactive dog, interested in balanced training methods, or simply curious about different approaches to working with dogs, Emma's journey offers valuable lessons about staying open, having multiple mentors, and remaining humble in your training practice. Follow her on Instagram at Raven K9 Dog Training or check out her podcast "Girls Just Want to Train Dogs" to learn more about her balanced, thoughtful approach to dog training.Follow Emma on instagram or visit her website.

What to listen for:"Get a dog, take the dog you have, start training, do it yourself. Yes, the client dogs will come, the other pieces will come, but get yourself out there."2/3 of our hosts, Robin Greubel and Stacy Barnett, sit down with Katelyn Graham from Katalyst Kennels, who shares her expertise in breeding and training Labrador Retrievers for detection tasks while managing a multifaceted kennel operation!Katelyn's going deep into producing what she calls “green dogs”: canine companions who are behaviorally and health-wise ready for specialized training without formal odor imprinting. She encourages handlers to put considerable focus into young dog development, from day zero to 12-18 months, the period in which environmental exposure and hunting skills are best shaped. Focusing your training around this period ensures that your dog is versatile for tasks like narcotics or explosives detection.Katelyn also acknowledges the emotional and logistical challenges of breeding, such as managing failed litters or health crises (citing one puppy's staggering $15,000 jaw surgery as an example). Her pet boarding business subsidizes these costs, which is a great way for handlers to weigh the ethical pros and cons of these heavy decisions without the financial pressure. For aspiring trainers, she advises hands-on experience over formal education alone, urging them to embrace grunt work and early morning tracking sessions to gain practical skills.Katelyn believes that success demands relentless dedication, from sleepless nights with puppies to mentoring eager learners, all to ensure quality working dogs for critical roles!
