In this episode, Glenn and Pat explore the vital role of rhythm and rituals in dog training. These two elements, when intentionally used, can provide clarity and structure to the training process—both for the dog and the handler. The episode breaks down how rituals help dogs understand how to enter a scenario correctly. Whether it's a training session, a working environment, or a daily routine, consistent rituals reduce confusion, build engagement, and set clear expectations from the outset. Equally important is the idea of developing rhythm throughout your training, which ensures continuity, flow, and a sense of timing that strengthens communication. When applied properly, rhythm supports the integrity of your work and helps maintain focus and consistency over time. If you've ever felt your sessions were chaotic or that your dog was unsure about what's expected, this episode will help you refine your process and bring more balance and clarity to your training. What to listen for:"To truly understand your dog, embrace the power of observation, question the environment, and engage with the nuances of their behavior."Our hosts, Robin Greubel, Crystal Wing, and Stacy Barnett, take a deep dive into the role of critical thinking for handlers. We've all been there—reading a viral dog training post and feeling an emotional gut-punch, or second-guessing ourselves after watching a training video. We need to learn to slow down, analyze, and ask better questions. Robin emphasizes watching videos without sound to assess the clarity of intent. Crystal introduces her favorite training reflection game: pause and predict. And Stacy reflects on how questioning cues—like saying “drop”—led to big lightbulb moments in her own training. Our hosts share how truly understanding what (and why) you're training builds better habits and stronger bonds between handler and dog. Whether it's breaking down complex skills like a retrieve into more manageable pieces or recognizing how forward motion might unintentionally reinforce barking, it's all about peeling back the layers. The Dames of Detection look into how fear-based language can cloud judgment, and how to filter training advice by considering the source, the context, and your own dog's needs. Crystal encourages following trainers with different views to stretch your thinking. Robin adds that respectful, private conversations often lead to deeper clarity than public debates. Most importantly, critical thinking is a skill, not a fixed trait. Like any skill, it improves with practice. So whether you're evaluating a post, adjusting a cue, or watching your dog's body language, stay curious. Be open. Ask questions. In the end, sharper thinking leads to stronger training, and your dog feels the difference.Key Topics:“What Exactly Are You Training in This Video?” (00:00)Focus on the Message You're Trying to Teach (08:55)What Stops Trainers from Thinking Critically? In this episode of Dog Works Radio, hosts Michelle and Robert Forto explore the critical importance of investing in professional dog training. They discuss the common misconception that dog training is a luxury rather than a necessity, drawing parallels to essential home maintenance services. Through various client stories, they illustrate how early intervention in dog training can prevent serious behavioral issues, enhance the quality of life for both dogs and their owners, and ultimately save money in the long run. The conversation emphasizes the need for pet owners to recognize the value of training and to shift their perspectives on its importance.

She has worked with everything from basic family dog training to human focused dog aggression cases. What does gender inclusivity have to do with pet behavior consulting? (Spoiler: everything.) In this episode of Enrichment for the Real World, Emily Strong (she/they) chats with Sami Griffin (they/them), a cat and dog behavior consultant with a passion for creating safer, more inclusive spaces—for pets and their people. Sami helps us move beyond surface-level performative action into real, effective inclusivity that doesn't just sound good, but does good. From busting myths around sex and gender to sharing tangible ways to practice using pronouns and avoid assumptions, this conversation is packed with insight, empathy, and action. You'll also hear how the same principles we use in behavior work—intentional practice, meeting learners' needs, and using a descriptive approach—can help us grow as inclusive professionals. Whether you're already deep into this work or you're just starting to explore how gender inclusivity fits into your role, this episode offers guidance, support, and that gentle-but-firm nudge to do better—for everyone's benefit.Meet Our Guest: Sami Griffin (they/them)Sami (they/them) got a bachelor's degree in music and gender studies (with a lot of philosophy). They worked as a veterinary assistant in veterinary emergency, in shelters in the foster and behavior departments, and with a Veterinary Behaviorist as a behavior therapist focused on behavior modification. Amongst all things animal behavior, they are passionate about educating people on queerness and how all systems of oppression are interlocked. If they aren't teaching people about the animals in their lives, they're likely teaching people about queerness and LGBTQ inclusivity, playing indie video games, puzzling, or embroidering.Connect with Sami on Instagram or their websiteTLDL (Too Long, Didn't Listen): Mistakes are Normal – Nobody gets it right 100% of the time, and that's okay. The key is how we respond: with openness, humility, and a willingness to keep learning. Behavior Principles Apply to People, Too – Just like teaching a dog to sit or helping a cat love their cat tree, changing our language and habits takes practice, reinforcement, and support.Take a Descriptive Approach – Instead of making assumptions about pets or people, taking a descriptive, curiosity-centered approach will build trust, reduce harm, and create space for authenticity.Links & Resources from the EpisodeFind the transcript in Arial l Find the transcript in OpenDyslexicLearn why Emily and Sami said it's so important to speak outGoing Down a Rabbit Hole?Want more ways to expand your inclusive, science-smart behavior toolkit? In this powerful episode of The MisFitNation, host Rich LaMonica sits down with Ben Vernon, a U.S. Air Force veteran whose journey from military K9 handler to successful dog training entrepreneur is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and passion. Ben's story begins with zero prior experience with dogs before the Air Force assigned him to be a canine handler. Through his military training, he developed a deep understanding of K9 behavior, training techniques, and security operations. His skills led him to an elite Secret Service mission, providing security for President Trump in 2020. Inspired by conversations with Secret Service K9 handlers, Ben pursued an opportunity with them—only to have the door close at the last minute. Instead of letting that setback define him, Ben pivoted to dog training as a career, realizing it was both profitable and deeply fulfilling. Taking a leap of faith, he and his wife relocated to Tampa, Florida, ranked as one of the most dog-friendly cities in the U.S., to turn his passion into a full-time business.
A Clare-based dog trainer, behaviourist, and science graduate is warning that social media and gaming companies are using the same psychological techniques as dog trainers - only with far more harmful consequences. Deirdre Ryan has spent over 22 years working in animal behaviour. She has developed a fun, science-based school workshop after realising that the same reward-based training used to teach dogs is also being used to keep children hooked on their screens. To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey was joined by Deirdre Ryan, DR Dogcare. Photo(C): https://drdogcare.ie/

What to listen for:In the third part of the series on consistency, our hosts Robin Greubel, Stacy Barnett, and Crystal Wing dive deeper into what makes consistency such a challenge—and how to truly make it work in real life.Staying consistent isn't just about following a routine. From setting tiny goals to using physical cues like a leash by the door or a pre-loaded treat pouch, the key theme is this: Make it easier to succeed.Consistency doesn't mean perfection. It means being predictable for your dog, building routines that support success, and giving yourself permission to make it messy and human. Want to be more consistent? About those words… Punishment, consequence, choice, structure, reinforce, strengthen… All of these words have different meanings depending on your background, training, and where you're coming from. Just because a word has a scientifically defined meaning doesn't mean that it is the “right” definition; it depends who you're talking to. A lay person definition is equally valid! look words up in the dictionary… That should clarify things for you. Words have multiple meanings. The goal of language is to communicate and be understood. If your goal is to be understood rather than to be right, it's critically important to know the different ways that these words are used. Not only their definitions, but their connotations. If you have that understanding, you'll have sensible conversations. If you don't, you might be right all day long, but you won't be understood. Follow my training! Bob West is one of the legends in bird dog training, a writer, hunter, and all-around font of wisdom when it comes to hunting dogs. He joins me for reminiscences about what's changed in dog training, and how different today's trainers are from the old timers. Bob suggests what we should be doing differently in our own training, his choice for hardest birds to hunt, how dogs think, answers some specific questions about steadiness training and we venture down a rabbit hole on the topic of - what? - Chinese field trials (which, it turns out, were really Japanese bird-dog buyers in the 1980's). Bob also offers advice on bringing a new dog into the string: match your current dog's sex, or go opposite? "Fix It" offers a poor man's bird launcher, and listeners tell us what they're training right now. You get a chance to win a free day of private land hunting from LandTrust.com, value $150 in our furfeathersfriends.com sweepstakes, but only if you listen and know the Word of the Week. And it's all brought to you by: HiVizSights.com, RuffLand Kennels, @midwayusa, #midwayusa, MidwayUSA, Mid Valley Clays and Shooting School, TrulockChokes, HiViz shooting systems, Purina Pro Plan Sport and FindBirdHuntingSpots.com.

Visit us at shapedbydog.com How long should it take to train my dog? That's a popular question I get, so I'm covering how to set realistic expectations for every age and stage of a dog's life. Dogs are lifelong learners and learn with all their senses, so we're looking at how to create success with intention rather than letting things around your dog train them, so you can avoid the frustration of needing to untrain anything. In this episode, you'll hear: • Why age and stage play such an important role in dog training success. • Why dogs are lifelong learners and how that affects your training expectations. • What the "honeymoon period" is in dog training. • What to do when the honeymoon phase ends and distractions become a challenge. • How to handle the 8-18 month phase when hormones take over. • Why dogs can't learn “don't,” only what we want them to do. • How the first 8 months of a puppy's life are the bulk of the training work. • Why ongoing maintenance of your dog's education is crucial for long-term success. What to listen for:In the second part of the series on consistency, our hosts Robin Greubel, Stacy Barnett, and Crystal Wing take a closer look at the mechanics of consistency, from creating intentional setup signals to reinforcing behaviors for longevity! You've probably heard about marker timing and reinforcement. Today, our hosts take a fresh look at the finer details—like how you stand, where you point your toes, and even the words you use when training your dog to shape new behaviors. The Dames of Detection chat about how good mechanics aren't just about doing something with your hands—it's about reading your dog and being intentional about your own patterns so your canine partner can read you. From how you cue a start to what gear you're wearing or how you hold your body, everything sets the stage for what your dog expects. Wrapping up, our hosts discuss reinforcement zones, chasing toys vs food, and how where you reward matters just as much as what you reward. The bottom line? Clean, consistent mechanics help dogs learn faster and clearer. So, before you blame the dog, check your cues—clarity starts with you! In this episode of The Canine Paradigm, Glenn and Pat dive into a reality that's often overlooked: dog training can be messy. It's not always a clean, linear process. There are times when our communication with dogs—or even our students—isn't as clear as it needs to be, and that lack of clarity can hinder progress. We explore how training sessions sometimes fall apart not because of effort, but because of missing or miscommunicated information. Whether it's the handler failing to clearly mark behaviours, or a student misunderstanding a concept, clarity is critical. The episode looks at how to better identify these gaps and provide the information needed to reduce confusion and increase success in training outcomes. Whether you're a trainer, handler, or dog owner, this episode serves as a reminder that the messiness of dog training isn't failure—it's a sign that better communication is needed.
