Now, the University of Plymouth has published a report bringing together evidence from scientists, the fishing industry and citizen scientists to reveal more about what's known as the 'octopus bloom'. What can it tell us about the changing marine environment, the consequences for sea life, and the impact on fishing? The on-farm science group BOFIN is starting a three-year £2.5 million project funded through Defra's Farming Innovation Programme. It'll be growing the first commercial trial of precision-bred oilseed rape, which will be resistant to light leaf spot. On this episode of Dog Works Radio, professional dog trainers from Alaska Dog Works share practical dog training tips, discuss common dog behavior problems, and explain how positive dog training and dog training consistency create better behavior at home. In this episode of Dog Works Radio, the hosts delve into the importance of engagement in dog training, emphasizing that a dog's distraction often stems from boredom rather than stubbornness. They introduce the concept of turning training into a game, which not only makes the process enjoyable for the dog but also enhances learning and reliability. The discussion highlights the three C's of effective training: clear criteria, meaningful consequences, and consistency, and how these principles can be integrated into play-based training to foster a stronger bond between dogs and their owners. The hosts explain that play is not chaotic but rather a structured way to engage dogs, making them more likely to choose their owners over distractions. They provide practical examples of training games that can be easily implemented without special equipment, reinforcing the idea that fun and effective training can coexist. The episode concludes with a reminder that training should feel like a relationship rather than a chore, encouraging listeners to adopt a playful approach to dog training for better results. The main thing to remember once you take ownership of a puppy is that they need obedience training, and you have to practice with them. Follow the guidelines below to improve your practice sessions and the predictability of the puppy's learning of obedience skills.Daily practice is essential. Practicing once in a while will not work. You have to practice correctly, the way a professional dog trainer has taught you. Short training sessions several times a day are better than a single long session.RESOURCES:Podcast Website: http://puppytalkpodcast.comSponsor Website: http://www.topgundogtraining.comDale's books: https://www.amazon.com/author/dalebuchanan Top Gun Dog Training in Huntsville, Alabama. In this episode of the USA Dog Behavior Podcast, we challenge one of the most ingrained misconceptions in the world of dog ownership: the idea of the "mean dog." Scott Sheaffer reveals why aggression in dogs is rarely a character flaw, but almost always a symptom rooted in fear. Diving deep into the critical difference between labeling a dog "aggressive" and understanding their specific fears, this episode will transform your perspective on your dog's challenging behaviors. You'll learn why a generalized label like "aggressive" is as unhelpful as telling a doctor you're simply "sick," and why identifying precise behavioral triggers is key to compassionate and effective intervention.Scott breaks down the 7 common types of dog aggression, from fear aggression and resource guarding to leash reactivity and pain-induced responses, explaining how each type is an attempt by your dog to cope with perceived threats. Discover what a behavioral trigger truly is and, most importantly, what you can do with this knowledge. Instead of punishing symptoms, learn how to identify what truly scares your dog and how to address that underlying fear with positive, humane methods. Tune in to move beyond the myth and build a deeper, more trusting relationship with your canine companion.Subscribe for more bite-sized episodes and visit USADogBehavior.com for additional resources!Find us at USADogBehavior.com.Follow us on Facebook.DisclaimerThis podcast is for educational purposes only and is not a substitute for professional advice. More Potty Training Tips

Puppy Talk

People call me to discuss puppy training, and their entire focus is on potty training. This happens a lot. The goal of this episode is to shift new puppy owners' focus to the bigger picture of raising a puppy beyond potty training and crate training.A dog trainer can only provide tips on potty training, crate training, play biting, and other issues because we don't live with the dog. Most of the unwanted behavior stems from the environment and from the owners' lack of leadership. The bigger picture includes:Setting rules and boundaries, Creating a structured scheduleObedience trainingLeash trainingSocializationIt's impossible to potty train a puppy without all of these elements of raising a puppy. Work on everything at once, and you will spend very little time on potty training. Two things in particular help with potty training: 1) when a puppy can stay in one place, and 2) when your puppy is tired. The main thing you need to do for effective potty training is to control the puppies' space inside the house and NEVER take your eyes off of them unless they are in a crate just big enough for them to lie down. Above all, get rid of pee pads. PRO TIP: Monitor their water intake by giving them 1 ounce per pound of body weight. If your puppy weighs 10 lbs, give them 10 oz of water throughout the day. That means about 2 ounces of water five times a day. After they take a drink, they will need to go potty 2-3 times within the next hour. Support Dixie's Fight Against Heart Disease. Donate here.

Send us a textWhat if the keys to calmer, clearer dog training are hiding in a muddy field at dawn?In this episode, we sit down with a farm-animal vet who swapped spotless theatres for open skies and on-call chaos. She walks us through the reality of rural practice - live calves at sunrise, emergency lambings, tea-stop triage, and the quiet skill of handling animals without force or fear. From those stories come the lessons every dog owner needs: • How reading body language becomes second nature • Why space is a cue and how stepping ahead or behind a shoulder can turn movement on like a switch • How pen size, positioning, and calm energy make handling safer and more effective • Why one well-trained dog can steady nervous sheep better than three people • How preparation and restraint change outcomes - whether it's a surgical success or the weight of a loss under anaesthesiaThen we connect the dots.Reluctant horses become blueprints for confidence games. Herding principles translate directly into agility handling, leash work, recall, and settling in busy environments. Working collies, kelpies, and huntaways show what clarity, timing, and resilience look like in motion and how the same principles transform everyday pet training.By the end, you'll understand why “stock sense” isn't just for farmers. It's a universal animal language - one that takes the chaos out of training and replaces it with calm, connection, and confidence. If this sparks ideas for your own training, share the episode, hit follow, and drop a quick review.Support the showIf you're loving the podcast, you'll love our NEW Sexier than a Squirrel Dog Training Challenge even more! For expecting parents with dogs, the question of safety can be a source of deep anxiety. This episode provides essential reassurance and a clear, practical roadmap. We begin by dismantling the common myth of dogs viewing babies as prey, explaining instead how canine mentality leads to curiosity, not aggression, when a new family member arrives. You'll understand why a dog's confusion stems from a baby's strange movements and sounds, not malicious intent. We then move beyond theory into an actionable timeline. Learn why the crawling toddler stage is far more critical for supervision than the newborn period, and gain concrete strategies for successful introductions, creating safe spaces, and reading your dog's stress signals. This guide empowers you to replace fear with confident management, fostering a safe and loving environment where both your child and your dog can thrive together.Free Videos from This Episode: Understanding Dog Body Language6 Basic Dog Bite Prevention Essentials You Need to Know to Protect Your ChildSubscribe for more bite-sized episodes and visit USADogBehavior.com for additional resources!Find us at USADogBehavior.com.Follow us on Facebook.DisclaimerThis podcast is for educational purposes only and is not a substitute for professional advice. This episode is a mix of two things. A full recap of a killer Christmas weekend with Stormy Crook and Aiden, and then a real talk discussion on using treats in retriever training. I start with why a simple comment I left on a Facebook video turned into a bigger conversation. The video showed a young pup being sent to a place board using treats, and I explain why I personally avoid treats with average to high drive retrievers. I get into intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation, why I want my dog working for the relationship and teamwork, and why I believe that foundation matters later when you are asking a dog to trust you on blinds and fight factors like wind and pressure. I am also going to ask Chris Jobman about this directly on the Flatlander Kennels Podcast, and I am open to being corrected. Before we get to that, I take you through one of my favorite stretches of the year, Christmas break, Mallard season, and the obsessive nature of waterfowl hunting. Then I break down an unforgettable weekend hosting Stormy and Aiden. We hunted hard, dealt with ice, ran the boat where other guys could not, and ended up with back to back three man Mallard limits with a bunch of feet down finishes. It was one of those rare weekends where expectations were low, the hunts were incredible, and everything came together. Wives had a great weekend too, and the new muck room got put to use the way it was meant to be used. Partners Shotty Gear

Fear doesn't mean stop; it usually means go. Meg sits down with trainer and coach Oscar Mora to trace the real path from a steady aerospace paycheck to a ranch built for teaching, trialing, and building a club where honest feedback and consistent reps change both dogs and handlers. We talk about the moment his wife said “it's time,” the practical signs he watched before quitting, and how discomfort became a compass for growth rather than a reason to freeze. From there we dive into the craft. Oscar breaks down why pet skills and sport skills speak the same language—clean markers, fair criteria, and rewards that match the dog in front of you. He lays out how to get into sport without weekly decoy access by focusing on obedience, neutrality, and structured play. We explore off-breeds in sport, what a Corso can teach a handler about patience and pressure, and how finishing something with the dog you have often builds more skill than endlessly chasing a “perfect” prospect.Puppy selection gets specific: confidence over defensiveness, love of chase, possession, and full grips. For dogs with too much gas, he explains how to install breaks early so the dog can think under conflict—like clearing a jump with a toy screaming from behind. We get candid about social media pressure, why trainers should serve clients instead of peers, and how a culture of private, constructive critique grows people faster than public takedowns. Most importantly, we show how play isn't just fun; it's a system for building engagement, solving reactivity, and turning stress into skills that hold up in real life.Stick around for details on Oscar's upcoming course, a free newsletter that translates training videos into step-by-step takeaways, and a two-day play workshop on February 21–22 in Upland designed for pet owners and aspiring sport handlers alike. Visit us at shapedbydog.com   If you've ever had someone twist your training philosophy into something it's not, you've likely run into a Straw Man argument. In this episode, I'm breaking down ten of the most common ones aimed at positive reinforcement-based dog training, why they're not valid, and what you can do to create genuine conversations with people who hold a different view of dog training than you, all while staying centered and calm.   In this episode, you'll hear:   • What Straw Man arguments are and why they show up in dog training conversations. • Why these arguments misrepresent decades of science and practical application. • Ten common Straw Man claims made about positive reinforcement-based training and my response to each one - Straw Man Argument #1 - "Reinforcement trainers are just cookie pushers" - Straw Man Argument #2 - "Positive training won't work with high-drive dogs" - Straw Man Argument #3 - "Reinforcement takes too long, punishment is faster" - Straw Man Argument #4 - "Dogs need leaders, not more cookies" - Straw Man Argument #5 - "Dogs need punishment to learn what's wrong" - Straw Man Argument #6 - "Training only works if the dog can see the cookie" - Straw Man Argument #7 - "Positive trainers care more about the dog's emotion than outcomes" - Straw Man Argument #8 - "Your dog will never recall reliably without correction" - Straw Man Argument #9 - "A head halter is just another punishment tool" - Straw Man Argument #10 - "Positive trainers avoid punishment because they don't understand it" • How to stay centered, respond constructively, and keep conversations productive.   Resources:   1.
