“You're not supposed to swallow it…but it's fine to have it in your mouth.”   Whether it's the debut from Metal Church or Dream Theater, or the swansong from Slayer or Pantera, TERRY DATE is undoubtedly one of the most prominent and prolific producers, engineers, and mixers of metal music to have blessed the ears of metal fans for more than 40 years.   Get ready for “a little origami”, remember that cross walks exist “for health reasons”, and discover why it's better to not be “on the boat” during a thunderstorm if astraphobia is an issue.   Check out our accidental album dive that was riddled with “Dysfunction” and discover just how many outstanding albums got left out of our discussion thanks to the “different tastes” of some of us.   Behold the hilarity of “Dealer's Choice”, realize that “Episode 300 will be ‘The One' (it's gonna be a mindblower)” and JOIN US as we go BEHIND THE BOARD with our METAL PRODUCERS SPOTLIGHT on TERRY DATE. HEAVY Music Interviews
Crisis Averted With WEDNESDAY 13

HEAVY Music Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 23, 2025 23:25

Interview by Kris PetersWednesday 13 is arguably one of the hardest-working musicians out there. From his solo project to celebration tours featuring Murderdolls songs, Wednesday not only lives the excesses of rock and roll debauchery; he sets the bar as well. Each of his musical undertakings, including Frankenstein Drag Queens From Planet 13 as well as Murderdolls and Wednesday 13, have the same menacing undertones of gore, horror and theatrics, but despite the obvious similarities, Wednesday 13 is much more than a one-trick pony.Blending the above elements with punk, humour and a ghostly sense of the macabre, Wednesday 13 has his roots deeply embedded in hard rock but transcends the barriers of a plethora of styles and genres that combine to make his music a necessary evil in a world growing increasingly sterile.2022's Horrifier was met with widespread media and public adulation, but these two things have never mattered when it comes to Wednesday's musical output. It is more about the sense of ambivalence and the irresistible thread that binds everything together that keeps the fire in Wednesday's cauldron burning.Such is his contribution to music that Wednesday could easily be forgiven for playing it safe with each new album cycle, but in true Wednesday 13 style, safe was the furthest thing on his mind with his new album Mid Death Crisis, which will be unleashed on April 25.More a step back into the things and a time that gave birth to Wednesday's musical psyche, Mid Death Crisis benefits from production by Alex Kane (Life, Sex & Death, Enuff Z'Nuff, Antiproduct) and a mix courtesy of Steve Evetts (The Dillinger Escape Plan, Prong, DevilDriver) that devilishly encapsulates the musical strengths of both while remaining quintessentially the afterbirth of Wednesday 13.Wednesday spent some time with HEAVY to discuss the album in greater detail. We started by asking if he is confident heading into the album release date."Very confident," he replied without hesitation. "With my last few albums I put out, I didn't know if the audience was going to like it as much as I did. And when I was experimenting from albums like  Condolences and Necrophaze and all those records, I look back now and those are the experimental records because I did some different things with them. And those were ones I took some chances with, and I wasn't sure if the audience would like them. But they did. This is the one record where I feel pretty confident that they're going to like it. I know it's hit all the bases with what I was trying to go for."The album is widely touted as a return to Wednesday 13's musical roots, an opinion we put to the man himself."I think so," he measured. "After COVID and everything, I had a little time to look back on my career and 20 years of doing Wednesday 13. And I just kind of looked at the whole career and went, well, what do you like best of all this? I started looking at it all, and I went, well, where I started was the most honest and real place for me. And that seemed natural. And I kind of went back to that look, and I went back to that sound, and it was easy to do. It just felt right, and this is more of a hard rock record than it is a metal record, but it's not just like I tried to imitate my first record or anything. It's just in the same spirit, and I feel good about it, like I did on that first record."In the full interview, Wednesday 13 described Mid Death Crisis as an energetic experience, carefully structured to reflect a live performance, and emphasized that sonically it encapsulates his career and aligns with fan expectations. He highlighted the song When the Devil Commands as the lead single, crafted to appeal to both existing fans and new listeners, with lyrics inspired by his childhood experiences during the Satanic Panic. He discussed his songwriting philosophy, focusing on natural inspiration from classic horror and pop culture. Additionally, he spoke about his collaboration with Taime Downe, noting its significance due to his admiration for Faster Pussycat. We spoke about his song titles and where they come from, coming up with fresh sounding material the more you write, future and current tours and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

In Episode 472, Stacey Richter speaks with Dr. Eric Bricker about the impactful strategies hospital systems use to maximize revenue from high-cost patients. They explore the financial complexities and contracting tactics that enable hospitals to profit significantly from a small percentage of high-cost claimants. Key points include the negotiation of provider stop-loss contract provisions, strategic adjustment of charge masters, and the intentional steerage of patients to high-revenue service lines. This episode highlights the intricacies of hospital finance and the hidden mechanisms that drive healthcare costs for self-insured employers and other plan sponsors. We could have 0.5% to 1% of total plan members costing upwards of 40% of total plan dollars. And I bring this up just to highlight the magnitude of the money here. In that show from last week, we take the issue of high-cost claimants from the standpoint of the plan sponsor. Today, however, we're gonna be looking at this from the standpoint of the hospital system. If we were to come up with a motto for the show today with Dr. Eric Bricker, it's that all costs are somebody else's revenue. And when it's revenue and profit of the magnitude that we're talking about with many high-cost claimants, it starts to be less of an accidental “Oh, wow! How did that CABG patient wind up in our clinic? What are the odds?” and more of a “Whoever is not steering patients is letting someone else with a big profit incentive lock down that steerage in deeply embedded ways.”  === LINKS ===

Aaron Rossi who drummed for Ministry, Prong, Rob Zombie, John 5 and many others passed away in January 2025. In his rememberance we replay his appearance in The Dark Mark Show in 2014 with then Ministry guitarist Sin Quirin… Sin Quirin and Aaron Rossi of the band Ministry joined Mark and Josi to talk music and enjoy some peanut butter cups and juggling.  Sin talked about recording the latest "final" Ministry album From Beer to Eternity, how hearing Ministry on cassette tape changed his approach to music, the pitfalls of playing guitar in front of a fence, referred to Mark's Ministry hockey jersey as a "onesie", reminisced about being in Society 1 with a few future Ministry members and talked about his new band Supermanic and teaching guitar at the Grammy museum.  Aaron talked about exceeding Al Jourgensen's drum expectations at his first rehearsals as he played the parts that 2 drummers usually play, how John 5 practices guitar in the bathroom, confirmed there is no beef between Rob Zombie and Al Jourgenson, how Al reacted to getting a bottle of Marilyn Manson's absinthe as a gift, playing in his new Brazilian band Black Oil fronted by Tony Campos of Static X and explained how to attain that uniquely powerful Ministry drum sound.

This is more specific to metal in the 90s after feeling the impact of the overwhelming shifting of sounds during the decade. Metal became a dirty word by the mid-90s as grunge and alternative took over the rock world, but a new movement in the metal genre blended all of these influences with the heavy. Thus, we give you - 90s Alternative Metal! What's this InObscuria thing? Our podcast exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we cover mostly bands that have been forgotten including some bands that we played early on in the podcast. The transition from the heavy metal 80s to the punk-edged alternative of the 90s was a time like no other, and metal bands that began during this time put it all in an industrial-strength metal blender. Hope ya dig! Songs this week include:Quicksand – “Thorn In My Side” from Manic Compression (1995)Fragile Porcelain Mice – “Brown Nickel” from Frostbiddin (1996)Therapy? – “Nasuea” from Nurse (1992)Corrosion Of Conformity – “Clean My Wounds” from Deliverance (1994)Prong – “Unconditional” from Prove You Wrong (1991)Fight – “I Am Alive” from A Small Deadly Space (1995)Life Of Agony – “This Time” from River Runs Red (1993)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

Going to Chicago being part of the peer education program has taught me not only practical skills such as public speaking, leadership, and teamwork but also to approach every situation with compassion. knowing I've made a difference in my community and potentially helped those who are silently suffering leaves me eternally grateful for the program and the people I've met within it.Anna 2 years peer educator. Going to Boston“Volunteering with Beyond Hunger has allowed me to take an experience that was difficult and ugly and turn it into something beautiful: helping others love themselves and their bodies. I know that in every classroom we present to, there is at least one student who is resonating with our lesson and, if not convinced to seek professional help, is at least learning new strategies in approaching their relationship with food and realizing they are not alone in their struggle”.Vee Ly 3 years peer educator. Going to UC Berkeley “Being in Beyond Hunger for the past three years has truly shaped my character and approach helping my peers. I have learned so much through the peer education program such as public speaking, how to deal with hardship, and how to help people in their own specific way. This program has not only helped me through my own journey with mental health and disordered eating, but allows me to help others in situations similar to my own, which creates an important safe space in schools.” ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Is Nü Metal the most divisive music subgenre of the 1990s? It sure seems to generate a lot of hate, but is also beloved by millions of fans. Eschewing the traditions of classic NWOBHM bands (guitar solos, leather, fist-pumping athems), Nü Metal rose from the same underground that embraced both hip-hop and mosh pits, with its own style (baggy pants, tracksuits, baseball caps) more reminiscent of Run D.M.C. than Judas Priest. In the same way that punk was a response to the bloated stylings of 70s corporate and progressive rock, Nü Metal stripped away the overindulgence of previous metal incarnations and focused on rhythm and catharsis. Bands like Korn, Papa Roach, and Linkin Park wrote about the dark underbelly of suburban home life, with varying musical approaches, while others like Slipknot, Mudvayne, and Static-X added a layer of theatrical presentation in their looks. We revisit not just the Nü Metal period, but also what came before it, bands like Anthrax and Public Enemy teaming up, the alternative approaches of Primus, Faith No More, and Rage Against The Machine, and explore the looks, the sounds and legacy of Nü Metal.   Songs In This Episode Intro - Blind by Korn (from Korn) 17:11 - Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck by Prong (from Cleansing) 26:20 - We Care A Lot by Faith No More (from Introduce Yourself) 37:04 - Denial by Sevendust (from Home) 49:32 - Last Resort by Papa Roach (from Infest) 50:27 - Rock That Doesn't Roll / Dope Nostalgia podcast promos 58:21 - A.D.I.D.A.S. by Korn (from Life Is Peachy) 1:11:24 - 10 Seconds Down by Sugar Ray (from Lemonade and Brownies) 1:24:35 - Boom by P.O.D. Phew!  We'll get back on track ASAP - there's a few episodes waiting to be put together, and the Garage Hour goons are on it.  This show's pretty gearhead: a prayer for John Force, whose funny car wasn't very (just add kerploding), a chat w/ our old buddy David Lozeau about how Jap cars, trucks and bikes parts were freakin' perfect in the '90s, how Toyota's fighting with bureaucrats about testing standards in the 2020s, why Ford's first-gearing F-150s are failing while Chrysler's reverse cameras don't see much, and why batteries and electric cars are running out of ways to pretend they're viable.  Sources include Breitbart, Yahoo, Asia News and Cowboy State Daily... While we're in there: Challenger 4-8-8-4 4014 is once again roaming the Midwest (apparently pulling the city of Cheyenne behind it), Pennsylvanians put $10 million in the garbage, and an excellent weirdo sendoff for "Kelly's Heroes" standout Donald Sutherland, plus Prodigy, Josh Wink, Chemical Bros., Prong, Orbital and KMFDM.

For those who haven't been following the bouncing ball(s), we've been discussing the '86 DEATH MATCH since we did our '88 Death Match a few episodes back (which was a complete bloodbath all on its own!) so we decided “What better way to commemorate our 5th anniversary as ‘The Number 2 Podcast Ever' (behind Rogan) than to pit the two finest albums in the totality of thrash metal history against each other…to the death!?”    If you thought our '88 Death Match between …And Justice For All and South Of Heaven was brutal, you'd better take a “get ready pill”, because you ain't seen nothing yet. As with each matchup in our HEAD-TO-HEAD DEATH MATCH series, the stakes are raised ever higher & the carnage escalates exponentially, and our '86 HEAD-TO-HEAD DEATH MATCH featuring Metallica's MASTER OF PUPPETS and Slayer's REIGN IN BLOOD is undoubtedly no exception. This was certainly not an easy task. In truth, it was quite “hard…rigid…difficult…” and given the sheer enormity of the task at hand, it was also downright “girthy”. From the most unbelievably legendary album openers (and closers) to the most haunting album art of any albums in thrash history, one thing remains clear with both of these ferocious audio offerings: “the bar is set”.   Get ready to “mark ALL the times” and remember, even though this episode might be a tough pill to take for some, whatever you do, “don't spit it out, just swallow it”. Prepare to “flatten the herd” and brace yourself for “moments of assholism” as we discuss “an eternal force that goes on forever” when you JOIN US for a day of celebration as we commemorate 5 years of Metal Nerdery madness with some “special guesteses” in The Bunkerpoon and go deep inside the octagon with our 1986 HEAD-TO-HEAD DEATH MATCH featuring “the most powerfully majestic” metal of MASTER OF PUPPETS and the “Picasso devil” infused, thrash evilocity of REIGN IN BLOOD.   Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode Help Support Metal Nerdery https://www.patreon.com/metalnerderypodcast Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182   Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on the iTunes/Apple Podcasts - Spotify or your favorite Podcast app Listen on iTunes, Spotify, Podbean, or wherever you get your Podcasts. Important Leerburg strongly recommends using a backup collar any time you use a prong collar. Prong collars can come apart (especially if not fit properly). With a backup collar, you can ensure that your dog will remain leashed. We recommend using a Dominant Dog Collar as a backup. Paired alongside with the Prong Collar Leash, your backup leash won't interfere with prong collar corrections. A retractable leash should not be used with prong collars. For more information on proper prong collar use, view our article on Should I Use a Prong Collar on My Dog?

Tommy also riffs on his preference to write everything himself, how his values in life have changed after becoming a father, and his excitement level of playing classic Prong albums in their entirety. We also enter a bit of a philosophical conversation about feeling a bit disconnected to people who need instant gratification in life, what tools of modern live performances he prefers to avoid, and how important it was to be respectful to older musicians when he was coming up in the scene. Petar and Sylvia discuss Doc Coyle of Bad Wolves calling out the online attack and boycott efforts on Thy Art Is Murder after they replaced vocalist CJ McMahon, and how we are in love with the idea of Primus, Puscifer, and A Perfect Circle concept behind the Sessanta Tour.
