In this episode of Ear and Loathing, your hosts Aaron, Damon and George (The Gitmo Bros) talk about the Paul Lynde response, jacking off in a foxhole, a tad too much saturation, and nobody wants an acoustic guitar. In the Torture Chamber segment, George and Damon compete for meaningless points by making Aaron listen to his most hated music. Will Aaron survive the Torture Chamber long enough to play one of his favorite songs? Tune in and find out! Songs featured in this episode: "Treat Your Mother Right" (Mr. T), "Red Red Sun" (INXS), "Deck of Cards" (Wink Martindale)
As we embark on our 6th year as a podcast, it's rare that INXS: Access all Areas has returning guests, such was the magnitude of Philip Mortlock's impact first time around in 2020. As an original and pivotal creative consultant to INXS between 1982-86, Philip's contribution is particularly timely with the recent 40th anniversary release of Listen like Thieves. With album cover artwork, photography and film clip contributions, Philip's skill and creative techniques have proven timeless. This time around, we wanted to examine the music business both in 1985 vs 2025 examining marketing, product distribution and the critical role support teams play in making and breaking both an album and a band. Still vital and vibrant after 40 plus years in the industry, Philip is still managing artists, their catalogues and most critically allowing them to do what they do best which is making music and does so with integrity and continued passion. So sit back and enjoy part one of a two part interview where we traverse a wide range of discussion points underpinned your band, INXS.

As the Listen like Thieves 40th anniversary album soars up the international charts, we unpack the June 24th, 1986 live concert which is brilliantly packaged and re-mastered onto the new release for fans to enjoy. The beautiful and historic Royal Albert Hall, opened to the public in 1871, has been the epicenter of British and international culture ever since. Hosting diverse acts and individuals ranging from Phantom of the Opera, Albert Einstein, The BAFTA's and sports, this 5272 capacity venue was intimate enough but large enough to capture INXS as they finally cracked fickle UK critics and audiences. With a setlist that leant on the recent triumvirate successes of Shabooh Shoobah, The Swing and Listen Like Thieves plus a few recent soundtrack releases, INXS captured that famous primal, propulsive and passionate urgency they were known for. With iconic footage on You Tube of the band's sound check and interview footage with Tim, Kirk and Michael sprinkled with their famous “ Nile Rodgers warmup song”, INXS fans are showered in nostalgic overdrive. So whether you're a downloader, vinyl operator or CD aficionado, do yourself a favour and turn your device up to 11 (hello Spinal Tap), sing from the heart and fist pump with passion and pride. May 10th, 2025 shall go down as one of the great days when INXS: Access all Areas was able to meet patrons, listeners and passionate INXS fans from around the globe as we hosted them on our Sydney bus tour and evening gala function. Celebrating our 5th birthday, Bee and I were truly humbled by the level of support, participation and love for what was a little idea in late 2019 that materialized into a fully blown concept in May 2020. So for those unable to attend, Bee and myself aim to bring the essence, events and vibe of the entire day to you through this episode. With audio acknowledgements from Ollie Olsen's Manager Bruce Butler, Sean Dickson (Soup Dragons) amongst many, we are truly humbled. With special guests Richard Simpkin ( Michael in Pictures) and the greatest INXS cover band, Don't Change; guests were astonished and blown away by INXS' very own Kirk Pengilly who turned up and stayed till the very end mingling and embracing the night. Shout out to all those who traveled so far to join us and thankyou to all the raffle, auction and prize winners with fantastic merchandise and INXS treasures going home with the lucky bidders. So as we continue to push the band's cause to be inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, we were excited to have the event acknowledged in the latest edition of Rolling Stone Magazine some few days later and believe with your support and patronage, we can lobby for true musical justice and attend as a collective the 2026 Induction ceremony knowing we did our bit. INXS legends Jon Farriss and Kirk Pengilly join Gleeso on Triple M Nights to celebrate 40 years of Listen Like Thieves, the album that catapulted the Aussie rock icons to global stardom. First released in 1985, Listen Like Thieves marked the beginning of INXS’ game-changing collaboration with producer Chris Thomas — the man determined to bottle the band’s raw, live energy in a studio setting. “He was fascinated by how powerful we were live, and how we hadn’t captured that yet on record,” explains Kirk Pengilly. The result was a sonic turning point that redefined their sound and laid the groundwork for their future success with albums like Kick and X. Jon and Kirk also reflect on the 40th anniversary reissue, which has been meticulously remixed by Giles Martin — son of legendary Beatles producer George Martin — bringing new depth and clarity to the classic album. In a poignant moment, the boys open up about revisiting rare tapes and old recordings of their late bandmate Michael Hutchence, sharing the emotion and nostalgia of hearing his iconic voice again.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dangerous Dave and Gleeso are joined by Jon Farriss and Kirk Pengilly from INXS to celebrate the iconic 1987 anthem that’s stood the test of time. Hear the inside story of how ‘Never Tear Us Apart’ came to life during the recording of INXS’ sixth studio album Kick. Jon and Kirk take us behind the scenes on everything from the song’s haunting string arrangement to its unforgettable saxophone solo — sharing candid memories of a moment that shaped Aussie rock forever. Late April and May is a special time in Australia, the UK and the USA where we commemorate our returned soldiers and remember those who fought so bravely to provide the freedom we deeply appreciate and enjoy today. Lest we forget. Inspiring us with loyalty, mateship and bravery, a little band of brothers from the Northern Beaches of Sydney channeled the courage of our war heroes to traverse the globe with no guarantees, promises or favours to become the biggest band on the planet between 1988-1990 with style, sacrifice and substance. In no way are we comparing the ultimate sacrifice of our war heroes to INXS however the DNA of true Aussie mateship, loyalty, commitment perseverance were traits INXS drew upon when many other bands before them disappeared after so much promise. So Bee and I count down individually our “Top 7 moments” when INXS bravely fought against the odds, self-doubt and industry challenges to usurp their contemporaries such as Dire Straits, U2, The Police, Simple Minds and Duran Duran to become the biggest band in the world. Typically our lists vary but the sentiment and unabashed pride in INXS' achievements evoke similarly. So sit back and take a moment to enjoy the characteristics and attributes that created INXS' success not just the outcomes. As we wish the world a Happy Easter, we thought what better occasion for INXS: Access all Areas to deep dive on that pop culture touchstone of highlighting INXS' very own Easter Eggs, that being the trail of cultural touchstones they have left behind over some 48 years. As with movies, books and music, artists often leave a trail and footprint in the cultural zeitgeist through multiple platforms such as movies, lyrics, sports and film clips and INXS are no different. So Bee and I have great fun in this episode locating these cool little nuggets in some obvious and obscure places. We kick things off, pardon the pun at the peak of INXS' international fame between 1987-1990 and divert into the world of movie and TV soundtracks. We then take a left turn to sports and bring it home with something more ethereal like religion, faith and spirituality. All whilst not taking ourselves too seriously!!! So for all of you adults out there who seem to miss out on the Easter Bunny chocolate fix, sit back and get your own very dose and dollop of INXS Easter Eggs!! We're Back! INXS:Access all Areas is pleased to take pause from all that is happening in the INXS multi-verse and acknowledge the musical maestro, genius and engine room that is Andrew Charles Farriss on his recent 66th birthday. Send a FanMail to the GenX Stories gang via text message!Remember the episode earlier this season where each co-host picked a 1986 GenX album and we got way too into it? Yeah… we're doing that again. This time, it's 1987—and no, we're not out of opinions yet (not even close). Each of us picked an album from that iconic year, we all (mostly) gave ‘em a listen, and then lovingly (and loudly) overanalyzed them.Expect deep tracks, random trivia no one asked for, and at least one “omg I totally forgot about that song!” moment. Oh, and as usual, we'll be dragging our former teenage selves and probably uncovering something weird about each other along the way.So press play, roll up those acid-wash jeans, and let's get back to 1987—because clearly, we think it rocked.Episode linksDid this concept earlier this seasonBest albums of 1987How Sting made art from lossSting's November 1987 Nothing Like the Sun Spin Cover Story: Invisible Son10 things you didn't know about INXS's KickThe Unlikely Story of How INXS Came to Rule the Late '80s With ‘Kick'Rock And Walk: Husker Du's 'Warehouse'‘Warehouse” marked the begnning of the end‘Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me' Fall Back In Love With A Classic Cure AlbumJust Like A Dream: The Cure's Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me RevisitedOUR ALBUMSLori: Kick, INXSCourtney: Nothing Like the Sun, StingChris: Warehouse: songs and stories, Husker DuEve: Kiss me, kiss me, kiss Me: The CureConnect with usSubscribe to GenX Stories in your favorite podcast appBuy some kickass merchWrite us a reviewVisit our siteJoin our Facebook Group

Pro wrestling stables come in all shapes and sizes, but many of the most memorable groups are the ones with lots of people in them: nWo, Bullet Club, Planet Jarrett, Mad Blankey, The Alliance, etc. Similarly, there are plenty of bands that boast a large roster of people. On this episode, Andrew and returning guest Brady Trappett (Voices of Wrestling) play bands with at least five members in them at one time. Some of the picks have only five, but many others go well beyond that into double digits. With the pending May 9th release of the 40th anniversary Deluxe Edition of Listen Like Thieves, Bee and Haydn couldn't wait to provide their listeners around the globe a deep dive preview into the formats, track listings, special features and bonus material. But before we do, we revisit and discuss the original 1985 album release in all of its glory as the album represented INXS' first genuine international commercial success spearheaded by the infectious funk groove of “What you Need” that soared up the charts providing the musical template of things to come. Listen Like Thieves seemed like a guitar tour-de-force response to the perceived over- produced but iconic and brilliant The Swing album, re-creating the “live sound” that Producer, Chris Thomas, wanted to encapsulate. With tracks like Good & Bad Times, This Time and the eponymous title track, this mission was achieved. The 40th anniversary Deluxe Edition release features the brilliant Giles Martin and Paul Hicks on production, remixing and engineering duties utilize the modern Atmos Dolby Mix, brilliant liner notes by famed music journalist Paul Sexton and a remastering of the forgotten but famed Royal Albert Hall gig INXS performed in unison with the BBC. Listen like Thieves vs Elegantly Wasted Time to get back to the music that filled our heads, hearts & eardrums over the years with our song showdown episode. With the 28th anniversary of Elegantly Wasted single upon us, the Bee contends that it's the greatest INXS song that namesakes an album title. Haydn, takes the contrary view that Listen Like Thieves is the greatest single release that namesakes an actual album release. “So Houston, we have a problem” that requires a deep dive debate with opposing thoughts, views and opinions. Etched in pour collective minds and souls, both tracks managed to traverse INXS' recording career at starkly different times. Listen like Thieves, the last ever single released that was a full band songwriting compilation and Elegantly Wasted, recorded uniquely in Ireland at a time post a Michael & Andrew night out on the town with Bono from U2. Either way, both songs serve as a signpost of INXS' incredible versatility in musicianship and songwriting. With a jam packed news section to add, there is no other place to be this week than with the INXS: Access all Areas Podcast team! Love and peace Make you vote below and lets see who you agree with. Dave and Milt delve into the week of March 12, 1988, examining the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart. They analyze songs from artists like Mike Oldfield, George Thorogood, and INXS, and critique what has aged well and what hasn't. Highlights include discussions on Aerosmith's 'Angel,' John Cougar Mellencamp's 'Check It Out,' and David Lee Roth's 'Damn Good.' They also explore notable tracks that didn't make the top 10, with a focus on the three-name artists in their 'Playdate' segment. This week on America's Podcast, the gang is back with Guest Travis Perrotta to take a deep dive into the slippery world of Saigon Kick's iconic album The Lizard. Was Matt Kramer the best vocalist for them? Or was he just the lizard king who could do anything? These burning questions are tackled with the kind of wit and wisdom you'd expect from a group who likely argued over the pronunciation of "Saigon" for at least ten minutes before recording. Tracks of the Week brought the heat: Marc shook things up with Shake the Tree by INXS, proving that even Aussie pop-rock can branch out. Mooger got introspective with Rain Will Fall by I Mother Earth—because what's a podcast without at least one guy going existential? Travis lit it up with Burning Like a Flame—clearly a man who's ready to burn his way into the power ballad hall of fame. And Jerry blacked out entirely, choosing Black Out In The Red Room by Love/Hate, a song so wild it should come with a warning label. As always, they sign off with a classic gem of wisdom: "Play in the sun like a lizard!" Because if The Lizard taught us anything, it's that rock 'n' roll is best served sunbaked, slightly sweaty, and maybe a little weird. See you next week, podcast pals!
THE MOON HAS LANDED – INXS Access All Areas Interview with AshenMoon (Part 2) In the second half of our exclusive INXS Access All Areas interview, we catch up with Garry Beers and Toby Rand, who have now reunited with their AshenMoon bandmates in Brisbane, ready for lift-off on their first Australian tour!
When it comes to hair metal of the mid to late 80's, no band discussion would be complete without bringing Poison into the mix. The band consisted of front man Bret Michaels, guitarist C.C. DeVille, bassist Bobby Dall, and Rikki Rockett on drums. Poison is a band out of Pennsylvania. Originally named Paris when formed in 1980, the band drew a good following in local bars in Pennsylvania, but decided opportunities would be greater in Los Angeles. The band moved there in 1983 and changed their name to Poison. They attracted a lot of attention with their stage show, and saw surprising success with their debut album, "Look What the Cat Dragged In," released in 1986.However, Poison's most successful release would be their second studio album, Open Up and Say... Ah!, released in April 1988. It would sport four hit singles, including their sole number 1 single "Every Rose Has Its Thorn." The album itself would hit number 2 on the Billboard 200 chart. It would also stir controversy with its cover, a picture of a demonic female with an extremely long tongue. An alternate cover was designed to address concerns which showed only the eyes of the model.Poison would see further success in the late 80's and early 90's, though their popularity would wane as the grunge movement took over music in the 90's. However, Poison has seen a resurgence of popularity as a "classic" band, and front man Bret Michaels has achieved success both as a celebrity personality and as a solo artist.Lynch brings us this glam rock album for today's podcast, and friend of the show Mike Fernandez joins us in Bruce's absence. Fallen AngelWhile the lyrics describe a young girl moving from Ohio to Los Angeles to try to make it as an actress, the song is really more autobiographical of the path the band took from Pennsylvania. This second single from the album went to number 16 on the Hot 100.Nothin' But a Good Time"The first single from the album reached number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is one of their best known songs. It was built off a guitar riff by C.C. DeVille and a chorus penned by Michaels. DeVille was largely selected for the band based on his cool riffs and party attitude.Your Mama Don't DancePoison take the 1972 Loggins and Messina song and makes it their own in this fourth single released from the album. The song's lyrics highlighting the generation gap of the 50's and 60's between parents and their rebellious teenagers was a perfect fit for Poison's image.Every Rose Has Its ThornThis ballad is Poison's sole number 1 hit. The inspiration for it came when Bret Michaels called his girlfriend from a laundromat and heard a male voice in the background. He was crushed, but went back into the laundromat and wrote the song right then. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Pump Up the Volume by MARRS (from the motion picture “My Stepmother Is an Alien”)This comedy starring Dan Aykroyd, Jon Lovitz, and Kim Bassinger may have been a flop, but the song was quite popular. STAFF PICKS:Mystify by INXSRob leads off the staff picks with the fifth and final single from the "Kick" album. Backed by a honky tonk-style piano and prominent finger-snapping, the song starts with a bluesy riff followed by a more straightforward rock sound. INXS originally was comprised of three Farriss brothers, but they were down to Andrew and Tim Farriss by this time. I'm an Adult Now by Pursuit of HappinessWayne's staff pick is a hidden gem from Canada. This humorous single alternates between spoken verses and a sung chorus that capture the worries that plague the singer as he deals with becoming an adult and embracing adult problems. It peaked at number 6 on the alternative music charts. Wild Wild West by Escape ClubMike brings us an English band with a song written by eight different people, including Stevie Wonder and Bootsy Collins. This song has the distinction of being the only British band to have a number 1 hit in the US without charting in the UK. "Headin' for the nineties, living in the wild, wild west."Where Is My Mind by PixiesLynch closes out with a signature song from the Pixies. The inspiration for this grunge song began with an underwater diving experience, and the lyrics convey disconnection. The Pixies were reintroduced to fans after this song appeared in "Fight Club." INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Silhouette by Kenny G.Bruce sneaks a soft sax piece from Kenny G. onto the playlist to exit this week's podcast. How many offspring can cockroaches produce? Why should you keep sending postcards? Why were weird hats having a moment in 1991? Believe it or not, these are all questions that get explored in our January 1991 POP CULTURE episode -- but we do cover more expected topics -- shocking omissions from Karen's reviews of Mermaids and Listen Without Prejudice; not-so-shocking half-assery from Neill in his INXS album review; a One To Watch who wasn't; and much more.
