Mid-October is an important anniversary in the INXS world. The band released six albums during this period, with Kick being the most notable. It's this iconic release, some 38 years ago, that we commemorate in this episode. With the world at their feet following the commercial breakthrough of Listen Like Thieves, particularly in the States, the band handed over full songwriting responsibilities to both Michael and Andrew, with the results soaring above and beyond all expectations. Rather than review the album (as done previously), Bee and I take a nostalgic walk down memory lane and reminisce about this 1987 release, our feelings, impressions and how its legacy stands tall 38 years later amongst fans, peers and critics. Additionally, Haydn dives deep into his Crown Casino concert experience with JD Fortune and the band in Melbourne with song setlist deep dives and after-show meet and greets with him. Combined with a chunky news section and an iconic tribute cover song at the end of the episode, make sure you tune, shut out the world and get your needed fix of INXS: Access all Areas. Love and peace ✌️ https://www.inxsaccessallareas.com/ You can watch the YouTube Video of the play-out song here. https://youtu.be/CmQiM8MQYEI?si=Ze4JqdzXI7vlRvgW

The mysterious Tango returns to help us decode the 1994 release of INXS's Greatest Hits. This album had a unique release in the UK, but we are covering the US version on this episode. INXS was one of the greatest bands of the 1980's, surviving the malaise of 1980's techno-pop and new wave nonsense on the wings of great rock and roll guitar riffs, exceptional high hat percussions and a rangy lead singer in the mold of Jim Morrison and Robert Plant in Michael Hutchence. If you are interested in more about the greatest band ever to come from the Land Down Under, please refer to our sister podcast, Rock and Roll Heaven, which is smack dab in the middle of a multi-part series on the dynamic lead singer of this band. Explosive pop rock duo Bound were formed on a fateful Saturday night on 14th of October, 2023! The lads aligned as founding members Harry Gold (singer) and Kriss (guitar) forged Bound in a frenzy of creative output with 3 songs and big ambitions. The Dublin duo have continued to write songs in a variety of styles and genres from bluesy rock, to 80's inspired pop, to feel good summer anthems, and have been wowing audiences with their dynamic live shows. Their first single with label Beardfire “Show Me Now” turned heads and pricked ears with it's potent mix of classic blues riffage and modern pop hooks! And now the enigmatic duo turn their hand to 80's style pop rock reminiscent of hit makers INXS! “Can't Get You Off of My Mind” is at once familiar and fresh, combining retro nostalgia with up to the minute production and style! “Can't Get You Off Of My Mind” is the second single from upcoming EP “Not Your Type”.
Another album, another tour, another country to call home, and another beautiful woman. In some ways, the early ‘90s were business as usual for Michael Hutchence. However, his relationship with his bandmates in INXS was changing, the musical landscape was changing, and some other changes, none for the good, were right on the horizon. Two of the 1980"s most popular alt emo pop rock bands, INXS and Duran Duran, face off in this middleweight bout, one of our closest ones yet.
There aren't many true old school Aussie rockers left these days, but the ones who are remember the 1980s with fond memories. For all of the household names to come out of that time, such as AC/DC, INXS, Cold Chisel, there were just as many, if not more, that were at least equally as talented. Bands like Buster Brown spring immediately to mind, but there's also another who may have faded from the minds of even those fortunate to have lived those times. Not because of their relevance to Australian music, but just because of Father Time and their relative inactivity. And that band is Heaven.Just one of many bands forming in and around the turn of the decade, Heaven were always a class above most others, a combination of talent and good representation seeing them earn the right to do a national support tour of Australia with Iron Maiden after just one album. The inevitable growth from an experience like that took Heaven to the U.S, where they would record their second and most popular album, Where Eagles Fear To Tread, an album which featured guest spots by an unnamed Ronnie James Dio, Lita Ford and Glenn Hughes.During their time abroad, Heaven supported many more leading bands of the era, from Black Sabbath to Judas Priest to KISS to Motley Crue, but following the 1985 release of Knockin' On Heaven's Door, the band returned to Australia, lasting just one more tour before the tolls of the last 5 years proved too much and the band went their separate ways. A couple of fleeting attempts at getting the gang back together followed over the ensuing years, with no bad blood between the band enabling them to get together when timing and schedules aligned. The loss of frontman Allan Fryer to cancer in 2015 seemed to permanently shelve plans of a fairytale reunion, until the seeds began to grow around the same time as COVID enveloped the world. Not to be deterred, bass player and founding member Laurie Marlow persevered in his quest, ultimately reassembling Heaven in what seems for all intents and purposes to be a fully fledged crack at restoring them to their former place amongst this country's elite rock acts. HEAVY sat down with Laurie for an in-depth chat about the past, present and future of Heaven, starting with the formation of the band."I'd been a musician around Adelaide for a number of years and decided that if I was going to get anywhere and move forward with things, I had to move somewhere like Melbourne or Sydney, so I picked Sydney," Laurie recalled. "When I got here, I just started looking around for players. And one guy... I lived around the corner from him, actually... and I used to go and see this band play, and that was a band called Swanee, which was Jimmy Barnes' brother. I struck up a friendship with the guitar player, Kelly, and I used to take him to gigs, because I had a car and he didn't. We just started talking about things, and he said that he wasn't happy staying with what he was doing, and he wanted to move into something different. And I said, well mate, what's your interest? And he said, I love this band Van Halen that's just hit the scene in the last couple of years. I said so do I, why don't you come and join me, and we'll put a band together. So that was the first step in the evolution of Heaven."In the full interview, Laurie provided a comprehensive overview of Heaven's history, detailing the band's formation in 1980 and their evolution from performing as Fat Lip to adopting the name Heaven. We spoke about them getting signed and making the transition to the U.S., and how their music progressed from there.Laurie talked about some of the bands Heaven has toured with and some of the memories of those times, noting how important being from Australia was in the early days in America. He reflected on Heaven's second album, Where Angels Fear To Tread and the contributions from notable artists like Ronnie James Dio, Lita Ford and Glenn Hughes, as well as the funny tale about how they came to be on the album. He recounted the initial break-up of Heaven and the subsequent flirtations with regrouping, including a tale about how the Australian version of Heaven lost their name to an assembled American version spearheaded by Fryer. He shared details of the current reunion and plans to record new music, explaining how it might differ slightly from older material due to inevitable modernisation. Laurie also discussed the band's two upcoming Sydney shows, including one where they will pay homage to Black Sabbath and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

September 7th, 1988, marked the culmination of 11 years of toil and sweat, when a true “band of brothers” from down under became the biggest musical act on the planet by scooping the pool at the 1988 MTV Music Awards. Nominated for nine awards, INXS walked away with the top five major honors, edging out longtime rivals U2, along with music legends like George Harrison, Bruce Springsteen, and XTC, with their iconic Need You Tonight/Mediate song and groundbreaking video. By this time, the MTV Awards had already surpassed the Grammys as the preeminent music event, and INXS rightfully stood as the darlings of the international music industry. Having spent the previous decade tirelessly touring the globe and steadily building momentum, they reached a crescendo that placed them at the very center of the late-'80s musical zeitgeist. With fellow icons including Rod Stewart, Aerosmith, Depeche Mode, Guns N' Roses, Elton John, Cher, Bryan Ferry, Peter Gabriel, Cyndi Lauper, and The Bangles appearing or presenting, the night became both a peer-to-peer celebration and global recognition of INXS' remarkable achievements. Much of this impact was amplified through the vision of legendary TV producer Dick Clark, who ensured the event was broadcast around the world. So it's with great pleasure that Bee and I unpack this unforgettable night, explore the rise and history of the MTV Awards, and reflect on the lasting impact this achievement continues to hold within the INXS legacy. On this week's episode of Friends Talking Nerdy, Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd turn their ears toward one of the most expressive instruments in music history: the saxophone. From Bob Seger's hauntingly beautiful “Turn The Page” to the iconic smoothness of Wham's “Careless Whisper,” the duo digs into the way the saxophone can transform a song into something timeless. They groove through the Rolling Stones' laid-back “Waiting On A Friend,” dance with Bowie's “Modern Love,” feel the epic storytelling in Springsteen's “Jungleland,” and toast with the classic party anthem “Tequila” by The Champs. The journey continues with Aretha Franklin's powerhouse hit “Respect,” the soulful yearning of INXS' “Never Tear Us Apart,” the rock ‘n' roll roots of Bill Haley's “Shake, Rattle, and Roll,” and another Bowie gem, “Young Americans.”Check out the playlist on YouTube Music. In the second half of the show, Tim the Nerd reflects on the passing of professional wrestling icon Hulk Hogan. While acknowledging Hogan as the spark that first drew him into the world of wrestling, Tim candidly explores the complicated legacy Hogan leaves behind—both as a larger-than-life performer and as a deeply flawed man. He emphasizes the importance of being honest about public figures' lives, for better and worse, while also calling out the extremes of online criticism that turned into harassment of Hogan's loved ones. It's a thoughtful, music-filled episode blending appreciation for the power of the saxophone with a nuanced conversation about legacy, fandom, and the messy ways we talk about the people who shaped pop culture. As always, we wish to thank Christopher Lazarek for his wonderful theme song. Head to his website for information on how to purchase his EP, Here's To You, which is available on all digital platforms.Head to Friends Talking Nerdy's website for more information on where to find us online.

INXS fans are in for another treat with Part Two of our fascinating deep dive with the inimitable Gary Grant who joined the INXS family in 1981. His contribution was as large as any in ensuring INXS' business affairs, touring and promotional efforts were A grade in every way. A great storyteller, we get fascinating insights into the game-changing tour with Adam Ant in 1983, why Australian band Managers were so successful globally and numerous anecdotes about a time and place when music was front and centre in people's entertainment consciousness. Gary generously shares the remarkable relationship and teamwork with Chris Murphy followed by the unfortunate fallout that culminated in the Concert for Life at Centennial Park in March 1992 with Gary departing the INXS family. Not one to rest on his laurels, Gary was able to parlay his skills into venue management whereby he spearheaded Sydney's Luna Park's foray into concert hosting. A role that would last over a dozen years and coincidentally saw him hosting INXS' 2006 Sydney gigs with JD Fortune and the Switch Tour. We get Bee's counterpoint “Pleasure and Pain” list from 1981, a special news section with some famous September birthdays (hello) plus an iconic tribute song that celebrates its 40th anniversary. So do yourself a favour, forget about the problems in your life and tune into INXS: Access all Areas! Love and Peace https://www.inxsaccessallareas.com/ https://www.inxsaccessallareas.com/patrons
Strap yourself in, because this week Haydn & Bee crank it up with none other than Gary Grant, INXS's powerhouse Touring Manager! He takes us backstage, on the buses, and across the globe with stories that are raw, loud, and unforgettable. Ever wondered what it was really like to keep up with one of the world's greatest rock bands on the road? Gary's got the tales — the triumphs, the madness, and the magic — and he doesn't hold back. This isn't just an interview… it's a front-row ticket to the wild ride that was INXS on tour.
The Kelly Alexander Show welcomes Michael Clifford from the hit band 5 Seconds of Summer talking about his debut solo album SIDEQUEST. Michael chats to us about the challenge of stepping out on his own with this project, the effect that becoming a father has had on his music and much more. Michael Hutchence was a well known front man and ladies' man, and on this week's episode of Rock and Roll Heaven, he starts to flourish in both respects. Some high-profile festivals and the fledgling MTV network helped INXS begin to rise on an international level. Once that started, a romance with one of America's biggest stars followed. Episode 227: Happy Birthday INXS: Time for a List!! August 16th, 2025 signifies another milestone with INXS turning 48 with coinciding birthday wishes to Tim Farriss (68 years young) and little brother Jon turning 64 in the same week. As such, what better way in celebrating the iconic tunes of INXS with a Bee and Haydn list. Focusing on the first half of their career, Bee and I count down our individual favourite “16” songs from 1980-1986 encompassing the debut album, Underneath the Colours, Shabooh Shoobah, The Swing and Listen like Thieves coupled with soundtracks and B sides. Why 16 you ask? Well with August 16th being INXS Day the birthday of INXS, we gave ourselves an extra bit of wriggle room in pruning down a vast list of iconic, memorable and fantastic songs. A task that contained enormous revision and painstaking commitment. Interestingly, our respective lists contain large swings and differences with a controversial omissions and ranking orders. With the 1991 London Wembley gig given a recent Sunday evening prime time slot in Australia, along with extra footage and interviews with Jon and Kirk, we discuss the ratings juggernaut outcome and take aways from the broadcast. So sit back, embrace the joy and jubilation of this very special episode that cannot be missed! Love and peace Haydn & Bee https://www.inxsaccessallareas.com

Triple J, the kings of alternative and underground radio since 1975 just held their public vote for Australia's greatest 100 songs of all time with some 2.65 million people voting. That's nearly 10% of the entire Australian population!!! It's with pride, joy, exultation and somewhat genuine surprise, that INXS' 1987 classic “Never Tear Us Apart” came in at number one despite stiff opposition from iconic acts such as AC/DC, Midnight Oil, Crowded House, Nick Cave and Gotye. Originally, darlings of the early Triple J movement back in 1982, INXS were later promoted heavily by more commercial FM radio stations like Triple and Fox FM particularly as their career soared globally in chart, touring and record sales were concerned. As such, INXS were often overlooked in previous polls which particularly in 1992 with their incredible Welcome to Wherever you Are, a sticking point for ardent fans. This poll win soothes the hearts of many. With Need you Tonight and Don't Change featuring as well, INXS' inclusion is a true victory for what Triple J's mission statement espouses, namely “the world's greatest music democracy”!! So we peel back how this awesome result came to fruition, tackle the time honoured debate and battles of Indie music vs the mainstream and most importantly why Never Year Us Apart as a song has grown in stature over the last 37 years!!! On Sunday 10th August at 8 pm we will also be doing our first "Watch Party" via facebook. Gathering the global INXS fans, to watch INXS's Live Baby Live being played with new commentry, on Australia's Channel & and Channel & Plus. Face the Music: An Electric Light Orchestra Song-By-Song Podcast
INXS's 1988 album Kick was one of those '80s albums that kept delivering the hits over a year later. That gave the band some time to rest after their tour and regroup, releasing X in 1990. Since the previous hits made it feel like they never left the new songs helped them stay on the charts as they molded their slick dance pop into something that resembled the alternative scene at the time.
Michael Hutchence spent his lifetime moving. He went from city to city as a musician, but this week we look back at his return to Australia from Hong Kong asa teen and his 18-month stay in America. Soon enough, he was back home and was in a band (Doctor Dolphin) that became the Farris Brothers, which then became INXS…at which point he and his band mates started their long, slow move to the top of the music world. Adrian Conforti is a songwriter and former touring musician who founded the band Soulys in the early 2000s. On this episode of the pod, Adrian visits the studio with guitar in hand to perform his original track, “You're Into Me” and reflect on the wild ride that music—and life—has taken him on.We talk musical influences, the heartbreak that sparked a creative wave, developing a following on the road, and the time he auditioned to become the lead singer of INXS. Looking back, it's clear how Adrian's songs evolved—from expressions of deep angst to reflections filled with gratitude and growth, transforming pain into something positive and meaningful.
Gwyneth Paltrow has had a big week, and coincidentally, so has Holly. As the new spokesperson for Astronomer, Gwynnie's made waves with a new ad, as well as a surprising body part of hers that's got some recent recognition. Plus, a women-only only app by the name of Tea is causing quite the stir in the dating world. But is it a necessary tool for women or opening an uncomfortable conversation about privacy and anonymity? And, Australia was arguing this weekend about what is actually the hottest Australian song of all time. Mia, Jessie and Holly come prepared with their top 5—as well as some constructive criticism for the list (and each other). In this episode, we bring back Brian Dickhute, one of our co-founders of the podcast, and review what we have learned, experienced, and enjoyed about this period of songs and podcast. We also feature a number of songs that were either missed in our coverage of the times, or that were important to us individually.Eruption by Van HalenWayne brings us this instrumental by Eddie Van Halen that announced the start of the Van Halen band on their first album.Long Live Rock by the WhoWayne's favorite group wrote this anthem to the genre.Black Hole Sun by SoundgardenLynch features a song that front man Chris Cornell wrote in about 15 minutes, inspired by a misheard statement from a TV weatherman.Creeping Death by MetallicaLynch brings us the first and only commercial single from Metallica's second album, "Ride the Lightning."Closer to the Heart by RushOf course Bruce is going to feature Rush in this last episode, in this case an anthem encouraging all to strive to live closer to the heart.Ridin' the Storm Out by REO SpeedwagonBruce thinks this song should have been featured earlier, and notes that the live version is much better than the studio set. Mother by Pink FloydOne of Brian's favorite groups, this song is selected from "The Wall" album, chronicling Pink's descent into madness. Going to California by Led ZeppelinBrian's second selection this week is a ballad off the legendary fourth album, a song originally inspired by earthquakes in California. The One Thing by INXSRob's selection is the introduction most Americans had to this Australian band in 1982, and one of his favorite songs.Mr. Blue Sky by ELORob finishes off this celebration with one of the happiest rock songs you will hear, one he wants played at his funeral. A special 1 hour 50 mins feature album review this week, as Bee and I take nostalgic walk down memory lane to July 2019, where on the back of Richard Lowenstein's heartfelt Documentary tribute to Michael Hutchence the subsequent Soundtrack: Mystify was released to Australia, Japan and European audiences. The brainchild of Chris Murphy, this innovative, unconventional and truly unique offering deconstructs the cliche soundtrack formats of yesteryear by carving a musical mosaic of songs, sounds, interview clips and reworking of familiar hits, deep cut, rarities and remixes of INXS and Michael solo tracks taking the listener on a sonic journey. Being released on multiple formats, the vinyl version comes with a double album and four sides allowing the listener to enjoy the nostalgic tactile experience with glorious liner notes and written contributions from each INXS band member on tribute to Michael. Strictly speaking, this isn't a pure companion piece to the Mystify Documentary with the album track-listing varying considerably to the documentary and the release was not without issues between INXS Management and Richard. That aside, this album evokes every gamut of emotion whether it be joy, sorrow, pride, passion, positivity and pain. So do yourself a favour and listen to this album first then listen to this episode. You'll enjoy it more!!! What are some of the most underrated bands? After finishing recording a recent episode, Eric and I chatted about something that we thought y'all might find interesting. The subject was underrated or underappreciated bands – and we talked about three bands in particular that we think fit into that category - The Cars, The J. Geils Band and INXS.
INXS recorded their biggest album, Kick, in Sydney and Paris, produced by Chris Thomas. Atlantic Records didn't like the record offered them $1 million to go back to Australia and record another album. The band said no. Good call. Kick was released in October 1987 and peaked at No. 1 in Australia, No. 3 on the US Billboard 20, and had four top 10 singles But they had more than Kick. INXS' music filled a niche, on the radio and in your head They were a band that was electrifying live, had a charismatic frontman, and a mix of rock, pop, and funk. And they were knocked around more than a little because they weren't simply a straight-ahead rock and roll band. Seems unfair to be judged based on what others sounded like, because INXS was unique: A rock band that had grooves and thump and a full dance floor. And Hutchence is one of the great frontmen of the rock era. I wanted to travel their album path and hear the before and after around Kick. I found some gems and underappreciated rockers. I also explore why they were not always loved by critics. Let's go. And let's rock, because INXS does. Turn it up

Who is Mark Opitz? Let's just say this… without Mark Opitz, the sound of INXS – and a good chunk of Australian rock royalty – wouldn't be what it is today. Mark Opitz is more than a record producer. He's a sonic architect, a studio visionary, and the man behind the glass during some of the most defining moments in Aussie music history. INXS – Yes, he helped shape their sound during that vital early international breakthrough with “Shabooh Shoobah”, and a few years later, he came back to help steer the band through two bold and creative studio albums: “Welcome to Wherever You Are” and “Full Moon, Dirty Hearts.” Albums that pushed boundaries, reinvented the band's sound, and cemented their status as artists—not just hitmakers. But the Mark Opitz story doesn't stop at INXS. Not even close. He's worked with AC/DC, Cold Chisel, The Angels, Divinyls, Noiseworks, Hoodoo Gurus, Models, and Jimmy Barnes—and that's just scratching the surface. His shelves are stacked with ARIA Awards, platinum records, and accolades from every corner of the industry. He's produced and engineered for acts like Kiss, Bob Dylan, and even The Rolling Stones during their Australian tour prep. Mark's career spans decades and genres, always with a trademark focus on the craft of making records that last. And here's the part we're proudest of… Mark is a patron and proud supporter of the INXS: Access All Areas Podcast. He believes in what we do, and he generously shared his time, stories, and wisdom with us across two incredible episodes. Episodes 222 & 223 In this powerful 2-part series, Mark takes us inside the studio, unpacks how his mind works, and gives us a front-row seat to the alchemy of recording. You'll hear about: Working with a young Michael Hutchence Finding that perfect guitar tone Why studio psychology is just as important as the gear What it takes to bring the best out of a band So… Who is Mark Opitz? He's the producer behind your favourite tracks, the unsung hero of the Aussie rock explosion, and a man with a million stories told with heart, humour, and honesty. Listen now to Episodes 222 & 223 of the INXS: Access All Areas Podcast and celebrate the genius of this legendary man. Rock history, straight from the source. INXS: Access all Areas is guest month; where we are pleased to welcome famed Australian Producer, Author, Business Owner and Order of Australia (AM) recipient in 2020 from the Queen to the Podcast. With the recent passing of the iconic Beach Boys Co-Founder and musical maestro Brian Wilson, we were inspired to get a “little musical” and dive deep on the art of the “vocalist”. With production techniques and recordings evolving so much between the 1950's through to the late 1970's, we pay homage to Brian, his band mates and other artists that created a foundation that our very own INXS benefited from once they emerged from the Northern Beaches of Sydney. Mark Opitz shares some fascinating insights dating back to 1978 where as a young emerging Producer with Albert's Music (home of AC/DC, The Easybeats, Rose Tattoo and The Angels) got the opportunity to work with the Beach Boys and Brian over a weekend when touring Australia. Combining these vital recent production successes and techniques, INXS were to become the future beneficiaries of Mark's sonic skills which lean into. So sit back, open up your musical hearts and minds to the sweet sounds and discussions of a unique but unmissable part one of a special feature double episode! On November 22, 1997, Michael Hutchence — the electrifying frontman of INXS whose raw vocals and magnetic stage presence redefined rock stardom — was found dead in a Sydney hotel room, sending shockwaves through the music world. Just 37 years old, Hutchence had spent the previous decade dominating global charts, while privately battling demons intensified by fame, fatherhood struggles, and a brutal custody war with the British press watching his every move. His untimely death not only silenced one of the most distinctive voices in rock but also crystallized the tragic cost of celebrity at its most chaotic and cruel.
