"The Damned Thing" is written in four parts, each with a comical subtitle. The story begins in Hugh Morgan's cabin, where local men have gathered around the battered corpse of Hugh Morgan to hold an inquest concerning his death. William Harker, a witness to the death, enters and is sworn in by the coroner to relate the circumstances. William reads a prepared statement about a hunting and fishing outing undertaken with Morgan. He and Morgan encountered a series of disturbances that Morgan referred to as "that damned thing". During the last encounter, Morgan fired his gun in fear, then fell to the ground and cried out in mortal agony. Harker saw his companion moving violently and erratically, while shouting and making disturbing cries. He thought Morgan was having convulsions because he didn't appear to be under attack. By the time Harker reached Morgan, Morgan was dead. The coroner states that Morgan's diary contains no evidence in the matter of his death. A juror implies that Harker's testimony is symptomatic of insanity, and Harker leaves the inquest in anger. The jury concludes that Morgan was killed by a mountain lion. The story becomes epistolary in nature, detailing entries from Morgan's diary. The journal covers the events leading up to Morgan's death as he becomes aware of an invisible creature that he is hunting. He infers that it lacks color or has a color that renders it invisible, but, to make sure he is not insane, he plans to invite Harker with him when he hunts "the damned thing". 'Ugly' is a subjective term, of course. Tastes vary and opinions are heavily influenced by how we perceive someone or how much we like them. However, there are plenty of characters in speculative fiction who even on the page do not fit the parameters of being conventionally physically attractive. When those books are translated to the screen, often the 'it' actors of the moment are cast in these roles because they are often great characters. And this is where the cognitive dissonance sets in. Social media and the drive towards a physical ideal which can only be attained through wealth and extreme intervention adds another, somewhat more troubling dimension as platforms like Instagram directly influence beauty standards and celebrity popularity. Have we lost the ability to see a normal human as attractive? Find out in this week's episode. What if the very things Satan uses to whisper, “you're too broken, too messy, too late” are the exact things God wants to use to bless His children? In this episode of the Memoirs of an LDS Servant Teacher Podcast, Maurice Harker (founder of Life Changing Services and creator of the Spiritual Psychology Masterclass) dives into the psychology behind fear, perfectionism, and “I'll just mess it up” thinking. From mission stories in Detroit to the story of Martin Harris and the 116 pages, Maurice explains how perfect love casteth out fear and why God invites us into His work knowing full well that we are still in process. You'll hear powerful insights on seeing yourself as one vital chess piece on God's board, learning when to move and when to “hold still,” and why your anger at the pain in the world is actually a form of Christlike love when it drives you to get tools to those who are suffering. Maurice and Markel also share about their new “Phase 3” effort—a project to turn deeply wounded, resilient Latter-day Saint women into an army of healers and creators who bring hope to others.
Can God really do His work through you when your life feels like a total mess? In this powerful episode of the Memoirs of an LDS Servant Teacher Podcast, Maurice Harker (founder of Life Changing Services and creator of the Spiritual Psychology Masterclass) explores what it really means that “God's work cannot be frustrated”—even by our weaknesses, sins, or failures.Drawing on the story of Martin Harris and the 116 lost pages, early Church history, and real-life examples from modern disciples, Maurice dives deep into spiritual psychology—the mental and emotional patterns behind fear, shame, perfectionism, and “I've ruined everything” thinking. He also shares memorable insights like “the miracle is in the mess” (a phrase coined by Karen Broadhead of Mothers Who Know), and why God often uses our most chaotic, humiliating experiences as the raw material for miracles.
What if the most heated arguments with your teen could become your greatest opportunities for connection? Marriage and family therapist Emil Harker joins us to challenge everything you thought you knew about parent-child conflict. Drawing from his own struggles as a newlywed who "didn't have a clue" how to communicate, Emil reveals why hoping to avoid conflict is a terrible plan—and why real intimacy only happens when we learn to navigate it skillfully.Emil unpacks his powerful framework of four statement types that every parent faces: criticisms, questions, declarations, and commands. You'll discover why your instinct to defend yourself backfires, and learn the counterintuitive responses that release oxytocin and create bonding moments. When your teen says "You don't care about me" or "That's ridiculous—no other parent is like you," you'll finally know exactly what to say. Emil demonstrates how agreeing with the element of truth—nothing more, nothing less—disarms conflict and opens doors you thought were permanently closed. We tackle the respect dilemma head-on, exploring Emil's eye-opening conversation with his son who asked, "How have you taught me to respect you?" This leads to a crucial distinction between demanding deference and earning respect through consistent, accountable behavior. You'll hear a recorded example of a father who simply owned his mistakes without pushing an agenda, and his teen's stunning response: "Well, it isn't all you, dad. I got a part in it"—words this father had never heard before. It's a masterclass in why relationship must come before resolution, and how making connection your agenda naturally invites correction without force. Whether your teen is in treatment or you're navigating everyday tensions, this episode equips you with practical tools to transform conflict into your family's greatest asset.

This week, I'm thrilled to be joined by actress and writer Susannah Harker forever beloved to many of us as Jane Bennet in the iconic 1995 BBC Pride and Prejudice. Nearly thirty years on, Susannah is stepping back into Jane's world, but this time, she's reimagining the character's life (and her own) in a brand-new comedy-drama, Jane Bennet's Second Spring. In this episode, we trace her journey from becoming Jane Bennet during the height of Austenmania, to exploring the complexities of midlife, resilience, and reinvention. We speak with Lisa Harker, the Director of the Nuffield Family Justice Observatory, who gives us an insight into the alarming rise in the use of Deprivation of Liberty Orders on children. She explains how vulnerable children, many born into poverty and facing complex needs, are increasingly subjected to severe restrictions on their freedom through these court orders. According to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Justice, 1,280 children were subject to applications to deprive them of their liberty in 2024 in England and Wales. Lisa and her team at the Nuffield Family Justice Observatory have been researching the issue, and have even provided evidence to the UK Government on why this practice which resembles incarceration needs to stop. The Nuffield Family Justice Observatory is an independent research body, funded by the Nuffield Foundation that improves the lives of children and families by putting data and evidence at the heart of the family justice system. Ben and Cailean are joining us for a four way pod this week! Ben and Cailean are the chaps behind Impact Route Setting. Which is a business that, amongst other things, runs route setting courses. They are both very well established route setters in the UK, as well as being strong rock climbers. We wanted to have a good chat about the inside scene, and listen to their takes about the state of the industry. We had a long chat about indoor grading and we also got their opinions about the IFSC scoring changes and how that might impact the route setters who have the tricky job of setting in the big leagues. THANKS TO ANDREW FOR MAKING THE INTRO SONG. (soundcloud.com / andoryukesuta)@andoryukesuta In 1974 Oregon, a young girl with a Polaroid camera follows a mysterious voice and encounters an erratic man in pale makeup. Twenty years later, FBI agent Lee Harker, who exhibits possible clairvoyance, is assigned by her supervisor William Carter to a case involving a series of murder–suicides in Oregon. Each case involves a father killing his family and himself, leaving behind a letter with Satanic coding signed "Longlegs," whose handwriting belongs to none of the family members. Lee discovers that each family had a nine-year-old daughter born on the 14th of the month, the murders all occurred within six days before or after said birthday, and their respective dates form an occult triangle symbol on a calendar, with one date missing. While at home talking through the phone to her mother, Ruth, Lee receives a coded birthday card from Longlegs, warning her that revealing its source will lead to her mother's murder. Following a clue, Lee and William find a doll with a high-energy metal orb inside. After visiting a mental hospital to question Carrie Anne Camera, the sole survivor of Longlegs's attacks who was visited previously by someone using Lee's name, William suspects Lee has a connection to Longlegs. Discovering that Ruth had filed a police report of an intruder approaching Lee the day before her ninth birthday, William instructs Lee to talk to her. Ruth directs Lee to her childhood belongings, where she finds a Polaroid of the pale-faced man, revealing Longlegs to be the man who had visited a young Lee on her birthday. Lee submits the photo, leading to Longlegs's arrest. Realizing the missing date is that day, Lee fears an accomplice will carry out the final murder. In the interrogation room, Longlegs claims to serve "the man downstairs" and hints at Ruth's involvement prior to committing suicide. Lee is soon informed that Carrie has also committed suicide. Agent Browning drives Lee to Ruth's home, where Lee witnesses Ruth kill Browning with a shotgun. Ruth then destroys a doll resembling a young Lee, causing Lee to lose consciousness. In a vision, Lee learns that Ruth has been Longlegs' accomplice since her childhood. Longlegs threatened to kill Lee unless Ruth did his bidding, and he has since lived in the Harker basement, creating Satanic dolls that Ruth, posing as a nun, delivered to households, causing the patriarchs to commit familicide. Lee's doll blocked her memories of Longlegs while influencing her with his magic.

So much marketing today feels cold and impersonal, like it was churned out by a machine with no real understanding of the audience. Brands are blending together, all using the same predictable phrases and empty enthusiasm. The ones that stand out are the ones that sound real—like an actual person is behind the words, not just an algorithm following a formula. People connect with authenticity, and that's something no AI can fully replicate, no matter how advanced it gets. Ernie Harker, a professional speaker, AI branding specialist, and author of Your Brand Sucks, helps businesses transform through innovative marketing strategies. With a background in illustration and branding, he delivers high-energy presentations on leveraging AI for creative growth. He has guided industries in rethinking their marketing approaches using generative AI tools. Today, he explores the power of custom GPTs for personalized content, how AI simplifies complex projects, and the balance between technological efficiency and preserving human creativity. Stay tuned! Dennis is joined via Zoom by two of his friends from the Xana-crew; Eric Seppala and Ruston Harker who have something unique in common. They both created passion projects during the pandemic involving Barbies and Instagram, which continue to today. Ruston's account is @dolldecree and it features short animated vignettes involving Barbie and her friends, saying pithy things and looking fabulous. Eric's account is @olivianewtonjohnisadoll and it's exactly what it sounds like. Using Barbie dolls, Eric has painstakingly recreated looks from Olivia's career; from her breakout days in the 1970's to Xanadu to the Physical era to her more recent memoir launch. Both men talk about what inspired them to start the accounts, their different creative processes--Ruston uses AI, Eric is totally old school--their most popular posts, and what having this side project has brought to their lives. Other topics include: the shame attached to wanting to play with Barbies as a boy, the Christmas gifts they'll remember forever, the joy of connecting with other Xana-fans, and constantly wondering if you're crazy for putting so much time, money and passion into these doll projects. The episode ends with a special musical moment; a bangin' cover of Kelly Clarkson's "Under the Mistletoe" performed by Dennis's past guests Matt Zarley and Kathy Deitch. Happy Holidays, everyone!
December 18, 1979. Moline, Illinois. 30-year old Cody James and 30-year old Gary Harker leave Gary's woodcarving shop in Cody's pick-up truck in order to make a delivery and collect some money, but they never return and the truck is later found abandoned across the state line in Davenport, Iowa. Four months after the disappearances, the pick-up is sold off at a police auction, but the new owners are shocked to discover Cody and Gary's bodies concealed beneath some debris in the truck bed and it turns out both men have been bludgeoned to death. It is theorized that the crime was drug-related and even though photographs of two potential suspects are provided to investigators decades later, no one is ever charged with the murders. For our final holiday-themed episode of 2024, “The Trail Went Cold” chronicles a shocking double homicide which has remained unsolved for 45 years.
