Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Today's fascinating episode of Synthetic Dreams features legendary singer, Tony Hadley .Tony, is of course, best known as the lead singer of one of the biggest bands of the 1980s, Spandau Ballet. The band, who formed in Islington, London back in 1979, scored a number of hits. Spandau's debut single, ‘To Cut A Long Story Short', one of the greatest synth-pop anthems of all-time, reached number five in the UK charts and was the first of ten UK top-10 singles for the band, reaching global success with ‘Chant No 1, ‘True; 'Gold' and ‘Through the Barricades' to name a few.We discuss, amongst other things, his Christmas Big Band Tour 2025, the 40th anniversary of Live Aid and his memories from that special day. He also talks about electronic music and his love Kraftwerk and early Ultravox, plus his time hanging out at legendary new romantic club, The Blitz.

This week on The Metro, Rev Jeff Ivins brings you the following for your weekly time trip to the 1980s: Alarm, Robert Palmer, Oxo, Men At Work, Kate Pierson, George Michael, Ramones, Ultravox, Deborah Harry, Human Sexual Response, General Public, Dalbello, Marilyn Martin, and finishing off with Joy Division.
"If I Was" Midge Ure is a one-man highlight machine. The Scottish born Ivor Novello Award winning musician was in the pop band Silk, the post-punk outfit Rich Kids with Glen Matlock of the Sex Pistols, the synth band Visage, the rock band Think Lizzy and the new wave band Ultravox. If you were wondering if Ure has range, the answer is: yes. Aside from co-writing Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas with Bob Geldof, helping organize the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute, being the musical director of the Prince's Trust concerts, organizing Live 8 concerts, being appointed the Order of The British Empire, receiving five honorary Doctor of Arts degrees by esteemed universities, and being an Ambassador for Save the Children, Ure has also had a successful solo career, releasing close to ten marvelous albums. Not only that, but he's an author, he's been on Celebrity Master Chef and he turned down an invitation to be in the Sex Pistols. His latest effort is Live at the Royal Albert Hall, a show that was recorded back in April of 2023 and it's just wonderful. In recent years, Ure along with keyboardist Charlie Round-Turner have figured out how to play songs that have a lot of sonic architecture and replicate them in two-man band form. The results are rich and deeply satisfying and Ure will be hitting the road in this Band In A Box format in May for a North American tour. But in the meantime, he's stopped by the podcast for a chat. http://www.midgeure.co.uk www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Stereo Embers Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com (mailto:editor@stereoembersmagazine.com) IG: @emberspodcast Bluesky: @emberspodcast

Text us about this show. The Splitz are a Milwaukee based band that began in the late 1980s. They've taken those 80s stylings with them through the years, mixed and matched them, caused them to evolve, and are creating some very dynamic music with them today. Band leader and mainstay, John Jaco, joins us on this episode to talk about the evolution of The Splitz not just musically, but how the band itself has changed over the years while staying true to the heart of where they started. We're back, and this time we've gone back 4 whole decades to talk about our favourite songs from 1984, including lots of jazzy indiepop, metal (from extreme to hair), german pop, and the mystery of whether Lionel Richie or Prince's girlfriend keep phoning Rockwell. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) -The Blue Nile, Billy Bragg, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Celtic Frost, Cocteau Twins, Lloyd Cole & The Commotions, Julian Cope, Dio, Echo & The Bunnymen, Everything But The Girl, Husker Du, Iron Maiden, Killing Joke, Kenny Loggins, Manowar, Metallica, Nena, Phil Oakey & Giorgio Moroder, Prefab Sprout, Prince, The Psychedelic Furs, Ratt, Lionel Richie, Rockwell, Sandie Shaw, The Smiths, Swansway, Thompson Twins, Ultravox, and Van Halen!Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7JDSRATZtdBU5yJtD4zbFM?si=256411ee4df7417aFind our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes (which need updating but I plan on doing them over the next month or so), you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdgIan's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqAand Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9NwThe playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Part of the We Dig Podcasts network along with Free With This Months Issue & Pick A Disc.Bluesky - https://bsky.app/profile/wedigmusic.bsky.socialInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wedigpusicpcast/Find our other episodes & podcasts at www.wedigpodcasts.com

Dylan Jones once described the Eighties as being shaped by ‘a new type of bohemianism, one empowered by a certainty and an optimism that was only fleeting back in the sixties.' *Moreso, K.Tel records importantly reminded us that home taping was killing music. So, it's November 1981, and this young music fan is feverishly taking ownership of two cassettes in his local Woolworths. One blue, one red. One bought, one free. Together this maiden compilation purchase - from the aforementioned compilation giant K.Tel, Charthits ‘81 - as kicked off by the ever so eighties drum crash from Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin – was the start of a lifelong love for variously compiled pop. One that would lead to, well, NOW. Forty years later and the superlative team at NOW HQ delivered their Yearbook for 1981. 85 of the biggest, brightest and best hits (thank you Mr. Mulligan for that very nice tagline). A year that started tragically with the death of John Lennon, and ended with Susanne and Joanne from the Human League with spray foam in their mouths amidst highly flammable Christmas trees in BBC Television Centre. And inbetween, a dazzling twelve months where the decade began to take shape and form an identity that remains with us today. Pop, soul, disco, funk, rock, reggae and metal. All present and correct. But, as Thursday nights on BBC1 would testify through those iconic theme tunes of Tomorrow's World and the newly christened TOTP Yellow Pearl in July, electronica was elbowing its way through the queue at the Blitz club to make a defining mark on the sights and sounds of 1981.With the able assistance of guests Chi and Ian from ElectricityClub.co.uk, this episode revisits the NOW Yearbook 1981 (and it's stellar accompanying extra volume!). An iconic line up of music and memories awaits including Duran, Duran, Ultravox, Soft Cell, Kim Wilde, The Human League and ABBA. We explore how the year saw some seventies survivors glam up and mobilise for this new decade with assistance from the new video pioneers such as Russell Mulcahy and David Mallet. We also consider how retro never sounded so good, what made a good (and bad) medley hit, how tribal factions and cultural identity shaped our school days (and the streets across the UK), how news and popular culture were living under the ever present threat of global destruction and how pop saved us all once again.Grab some blank tapes, switch off one of the three channels on your TV and join us as we head back to a glorious year in pop, 1981.Ridicule is, as you know, nothing to be scared of. * Sweet Dreams: The Story of the New Romantics: Dylan Jones (2020) Hosted on Acast. U2 were on a sharp trajectory up after 1983's War and the 1984 live album Under A Blood Red Sky. With sharp guitar licks from The Edge, powerful and earnest vocals from Bono and a killer rhythm section with Larry Mullens, Jr (drums) and Adam Clayton (bass), U2 were on their way to being the next great rock band. However, the boys yearned for something more than rock stardom and big American fame through disposable pop hits. They wanted a more European sound that was cultivated by the likes of Roxy Music and Ultravox. So much to the chagrin of Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, they employed Brian Eno (Roxy Music, David Bowie) and his engineer Daniel Lanois to help guide them on a mystical musical journey that would change their sound forever. And while they did score a big radio with with Pride (In The Name Of Love), most of the album is more ambient and often subdued. Deep cuts like Bad, A Sort of Homecoming and Indian Summer Sky may have caught the attention of fans and rock DJs, the album didn't become the game changer for which they may have been hoping. However, it set the groundwork for the next album, The Joshua Tree, which would propel them to superstar status around the globe. As it turns 40, we explore this left turn by U2 which would eventually pay enormous dividends. Part 1 of the 80:10 for Ultravox keyboard player, Billy Currie, with lots of fabulous music discussed in lovely bite-sized pieces.Part one covers 1-5;1. FADE TO GREY (1980/81)After a pre-amble, setting up where Billy was come 1980, we start with the first of Billy's seminal hits of the 80s, Fade to Grey by Visage. This is a 5 minute excerpt of Billy's chat about F2G. The full version can be found on the Anatomy of a Song episode on said track.2. B SIDES (1980-87)An interesting detour as we discuss the many Ultravox b sides of the 80s. Billy discusses his favourites.3. VIENNA (1980/81)Another iconic hit of officially “the best number 2 of the 80s”, and another excerpt from an Anatomy of a Song episode. 4. THE VOICE (1981)Original concept of interview was to discuss ten tracks, this changed during the course of the chat. This is why The Voice is discussed rather than the brilliant LP, Rage in Eden.Originally we discussed the music video as an audio commentary but edited down due to large pauses and just included as part of the chat. 5. GEORGE MARTIN (1982)Moving away from Conny Plank, the boys decide to try an up-and-coming producer called George Martin. Billy discusses how they worked together and the influence George had on them.He later did the orchestration for All In One Day but that is not discussed at this point. [It's farking great tho]For more on Billy check out billycurrie.comTo help support the pod via PayPal or say hi80sography@gmail.com This One Is For Chris x
Baxie talks to Prog Rock legend Leslie Mandoki--leader of The Mandoki Soulmates. The band is a wildly successful collaboration between Leslie and some of the biggest names in Rock Music. It's a list that has included Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull, Jack Bruce from Cream, Peter Frampton, guitarist Al Di Meola, John Lord from Deep Purple, Chaka Kahn, Roger Hodgeson from Supertramp, Midge Ure from Ultravox, Greg Lake from ELP, and dozens more! And this year, the Mandoki Soulmates have released their latest album, "A Memory of Our Future"! But that's not all! The story behind the band and its early beginnings is absolutely amazing! But the story of his life is even more so---having been a political refugee from the Communist controlled government of his native Hungary. This is one of the most harrowing and inspiring stories in Rock history! Listen on Apple Podcasts, SoundCloud, Spotify, and on the Rock102 website. “I'm a Walter Mitty who's actually done it.” Growing up in a tenement on the outskirts of Glasgow, Midge Ure dreamt of being a rock star, even though it seemed impossible for a working-class kid like him. But he had something special. At just 18, he got his first break as the guitarist for the pop band Slik and went on to be part of several influential bands in the 1970s and 80s, including Rich Kids, Thin Lizzy and Ultravox. Alongside Bob Geldof, he set up Band Aid, collaborating on the 1984 hit Do They Know It's Christmas? With a career spanning over 50 years, he has firmly established himself as a rock legend, making all his dreams come true. Tickets for Midge Ure: Catalogue: The Hits Tour are available at midgeure.co.uk

Kornflake is back, just in time for a new game! A new WAVE game, specifically! Thirty years ago, Rhino Records released a fifteen volume series of CDs called Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits of the 80s. We're looking at the first three of these fantastic compilation albums, and attempting to guess each other's favorite songs. There are some genuine classics (from The Buggles, The Knack, Blondie, Devo, and Squeeze), some bizarro oddities (like "Warm Leatherette" and "Too Young to Date"), a Tim Curry dance number, a surprise Monkees cover, and lots more super-fun but long-forgotten obscurities. (Any other fans of Martha & The Muffins out there?) Who shall emerge victorious from this deep dive into the craziest music of the early 80s? Squish into your old Ultravox t-shirt and join us.
