Lorette Velvette is a Memphis legend, having done time with groups like Alluring Strange, The Hellcats, Kropotkins, and a variety of top-notch solo LPs that mostly came out in Germany initially. Her influences draw on everything from post-punk to Memphis and North Mississippi Hill Country blues legacies all in a very special alchemy. Collaborations include recordings with Mick Collins (Gories), Dave Soldier, Jonathan Kane, Tav Falco, Moe Tucker, as well as a cameo on Sonic Youth's Washing Machine LP singing with Kims Gordon and Deal. The present day podcasters who refuse to die, with special guest Dave Soldier. . . . . YOU DON'T KNOW MOJACK is a podcast dedicated to exploring the entire SST catalogue, in order, from start to finish. During the podcast we will discuss all the releases that are part of our core DNA, as well as many lesser-known releases that deserve a second chance, or releases that we are discovering for the very first time (we actually don't know Mojack!). First and foremost we are fans, and acknowledge that we are not perfect and don't know everything – sometimes the discussion is more about a time, place, feeling, personal experience or random tangents, and less about the facts (but we will try to get to the facts too). In 1997, this social experiment was released by two Russian sociologists and an American composer after they released a poll determining what people wanted and didn't want in a song. The wanted song....exists. The unwanted song is a 20 minute avant-novelty piece featuring accordions, bagpipes, and most blatantly rapping cowgirl opera sopranos & children choirs singing about holiday shopping at Walmart! Guess which one we prefer. Let's talk "The People's Choice Music"!

Why does a clarinet play at lower pitches than a flute? What does it mean for sounds to be in or out of tune? How are emotions carried by music? Do other animals perceive sound like we do? How might a musician use math to come up with new ideas? This book offers a lively exploration of the mathematics, physics, and neuroscience that underlie music in a way that readers without scientific background can follow. David Sulzer, also known in the musical world as Dave Soldier, explains why the perception of music encompasses the physics of sound, the functions of the ear and deep-brain auditory pathways, and the physiology of emotion. He delves into topics such as the math by which musical scales, rhythms, tuning, and harmonies are derived, from the days of Pythagoras to technological manipulation of sound waves. Sulzer ranges from styles from around the world to canonical composers to hip-hop, the history of experimental music, and animal sound by songbirds, cetaceans, bats, and insects. He makes accessible a vast range of material, helping readers discover the universal principles behind the music they find meaningful. Written for musicians and music lovers with any level of science and math proficiency, including none, Music, Math, and Mind: The Physics and Neuroscience of Music (Columbia UP, 2021) demystifies how music works while testifying to its beauty and wonder. Galina Limorenko is a doctoral candidate in Neuroscience with a focus on biochemistry and molecular biology of neurodegenerative diseases at EPFL in Switzerland. Fishko Files from WNYC

A sketch for a new piece by 20th century jazz violinist Stuff Smith has surfaced. As WNYC's Sara Fishko tells us in this Fishko Files, it may be a small work, but it's a reminder of Smith's big influence on music. The Stuff Smith concerto can be heard at Le Poisson Rouge this Sunday, November 5. For details on this Composers Concordance concert, visit lpr.com.  Jazz violinist Regina Carter performs at NJPAC as part of Ella & Dizzy: The Centennial Celebration on Sunday, November 12. For tickets, visit NJPAC.org. Limited edition and rare Stuff Smith recordings, including his unfinished concerto, are available through Anthony Barnett's AB Fable Archive. The Savory Collection Volumes 1-3 are available exclusively on Apple Music and iTunes. A neuroscientist who goes by “Dave Soldier” when he’s not in the lab has a diverse musical background. He’s had a role in assembling the Thai Elephant Orchestra and making music with the Kropotkins along with countless other projects. One of Dave’s most unique projects, “The People’s Choice Music,” was inspired by a duo of Russian conceptual artists, Komar and Melamid. In this satirical survey, Dave gathered information on what elements could help him write the most wanted and unwanted songs.
