Data Transforming Business
No Use Case, No Value: Why Managing AI Use Cases is Key to Demonstrating Business Value

Data Transforming Business

AI investment is growing fast, but proving its value remains one of the biggest challenges facing data leaders today. Dashboards are built, models are deployed, and yet when the budget question arrives, most teams still can't clearly demonstrate return on investment.Speaking on Don't Panic, It's Just Data with host Christina Stathopoulos, Nadiem von Heydebrand, CEO and co-founder of Mindfuel, identified where most organisations go wrong: the interface between data teams and the business. According to von Heydebrand, the reason is straightforward: no use case, no value."We get a demand, we believe we've understood it, and we start executing immediately," he explained. Months pass, and nobody can answer why the project exists or what problem it was supposed to solve in the first place. The fix isn't more technology. It's better use case management. The 3 Pillars of Effective AI Use Case ManagementOne of von Heydebrand's core principles is straightforward: before you build anything, you need to really understand the business challenge you're trying to solve. "You have to fall in love with the problem, not with the solution," he said. This matters more than ever in the era of generative AI. With token costs attached to every AI interaction, building the wrong solution isn't just a wasted effort; it's an ongoing financial drain. Use case management has moved from being a nice-to-have to an operational necessity. Good use case management, according to Nadiem, rests on three pillars:Demand exploration: Don't assume you understand the problem. Engage stakeholders, ask deeper questions, and uncover the real business challenge before a single line of code is written.Value management: Every use case needs a value hypothesis. What outcome is expected if this problem is solved? As Nadiem puts it: "The solution itself has a value of zero. Value lives in the problem space."Value tracking: Once live, track performance against the original hypothesis. Define a realistic ROI timeframe and review it consistently.Adoption Metrics Are Not Proof of ValueOne of the most common mistakes? Measuring AI success through usage and adoption data alone. "I have enough examples where usage is high, and value is zero or even negative," von Heydebrand warned.Clicks and logins are a proxy. Business outcomes are the goal. If there's no correlation between the two, the metric is misleading.Output vs. Outcome: The Shift That MattersThe most important distinction in the conversation was the difference between output and outcome. Data teams have historically been measured on output like model accuracy, number of dashboards, and features delivered. But output without impact is just activity. Outcome means the value created for the recipient of your work. Organisations that make this mindset shift from measuring what they produce to measuring what they change are the ones that change their data functions from cost centres into genuine value generators. For leaders under pressure to prove ROI from AI initiatives, Mindfuel's CEO advises a pragmatic approach: start now, start small, and be honest. As Stathopoulos summarised: "It all comes back to being intentional about what you build and why." Discothèque Decadence DD023 Haçienda Manchester Opening – 44th Anniversary 80s & 90s Dance Classics Step back onto one of the most influential dancefloors in music history as Discothèque Decadence celebrates the 44th anniversary of Manchester's legendary Haçienda. This special edition pays tribute to the records, DJs and unforgettable nights that helped define club culture throughout the late 1980s and 1990s. From the euphoric rise of House and Garage to the underground sounds that fuelled a generation, DD023 captures the spirit of a movement that changed dance music forever. Featuring timeless classics and dancefloor anthems from Todd Terry, David Morales, Roger Sanchez, K-Klass, Inner City, A Guy Called Gerald, Derrick May, Larry Heard, Alison Limerick, Joe Smooth and many more, this mix is packed with the records that lit up Manchester's most famous club. For me, this is where the story really begins. The Haçienda sound, the records, the culture and the energy of that era sparked my own love affair with dance music during the mid-to-late 1990s. Long before DJing, collecting records and creating mixes became a huge part of my life, these were the records and stories that inspired everything that followed. Pulled from the archives, this mix has become something of a time capsule. Over the years it has grown into the most listened-to Dance Classics mix I've ever recorded, continuing to attract listeners who share a love for the golden era of House music and the enduring legacy of the Haçienda. Every track has been carefully selected and mixed with love as a celebration of the records, the DJs and the dancefloor that changed everything. TRACKLIST 1. The Source feat. Peace is something we often treat like a destination, something we’ll finally reach once life quiets down, problems fade, and everything feels under control. In this episode, Jay challenges that idea. Peace isn’t something you arrive at, it’s something you build in real time. It’s the ability to stay grounded, even when life isn’t. He explains how peace rarely disappears in one dramatic moment. It fades gradually through small compromises, unspoken truths, tolerated behaviors, and the quiet ways we begin to lose ourselves just to keep everything else running. Over time, those choices add up, leaving us feeling drained without always understanding why. Jay invites us to take a closer look at the hidden cost of your relationships, your work, and even your own thinking. From the emotional weight you carry for others to how tightly your identity is tied to being productive, he shows that a lot of your exhaustion is not just about what you do, it is about what you are constantly holding together. Jay also challenges the idea that loyalty means sacrificing yourself, encouraging a more honest look at the people and patterns in your life. Real peace, as he explains, comes from clarity. It requires the willingness to see things as they are, not just how you wish they were. In this episode you'll learn: How to Identify What’s Draining Your Energy How to Reduce Emotional Labor in Relationships How to Break Free from Family Roles That Exhaust You How to Separate Your Identity from Your Work How to Build Daily Habits That Restore Your Peace If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, stretched thin, or quietly disconnected from yourself, know that it doesn’t have to stay that way. Peace isn’t something reserved for a different life or a future version of you, it’s something you can begin rebuilding right where you are. Despite a reputation as the finest New Orleans funk band ever, the Meters didn't get their full due in the first go-round back in the 1960s and '70s. Their recordings for Josie, Island and Reprise were the pinnacle of dirty Southern funk in an era when glossy, uptown disco ruled the R&B roost, but they were admired by the likes of Paul McCartney and Robert Palmer, who both hired them as sidemen. It's shocking how much better the Meters sound as a whole than any of these musicians do leading their own bands playing the same timeless material. The quartet had a simmering feud for nearly three decades that they patched up after Katrina hit, and Wednesday's concert at the Hollywood Bowl was their 11th gig together in the last nine months. They stretched out on songs such as "Cissy Strut" (one of their two top 40 singles), "Look Ka Py-Py" and songs that organist Art Neville took with him to the Neville Brothers after the Meters split in 1976, "People Say" and "Hey Pocky Way." While the songs remain the same, their sound retains its density and drive due to Art's steady and even ferocious organ playing and George Porter Jr.'s bass playing, which fills gaps the way the best reggae players have done. Zigaboo Modeliste, as good a drummer as the rock world has seen, is inventive and inspiring; at times, he creates the illusion of a backbeat and goes his merry way, filling in spaces with deft attacks on the tom-toms or riding a cymbal, seemingly never duplicating himself during a song except when absolutely necessary. Guitarist Leo Nocentelli has dramatically altered his sound, going for a hard rock-meets-soul style; technique's far flashier than his swampy or scratchy sounds he on the band's legendary records. The Bowl's screens displayed Nocentelli's dazzling fretwork, and seeing his effort helped adjust the ears to a sound that had more in common with the Isley Brothers than New Orleans. Band closed with a sultry slice of soul from '74, "It Ain't No Use," which a contempo radio programmer could put on the air today alongside Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" without a single listener batting an eye. Their music, while it has a distinct sense of place, was quite ahead of its time. Art, who continues to struggle with back problems and walked across the stage with a cane, did double duty, appearing with his brothers, nephews and a few hired hands. The Nevilles far surpassed their tepid 1997 Bowl appearance by blending just enough uptempo numbers with the ballads of Aaron, who has an album of vintage soul covers due in stores Sept. 19. The angelic-voiced bear of a man turned in a spine-tingling rendition of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" and followed with a reggae-tinged spin on Bill Wither's "Ain't No Sunshine" and a perfectly calm version of his 1967 hit "Tell It Like It Is."

Toronto's melodic punk lifers Wasting Time are back with their new single “Ripped Blue Jeans”, out December 12 via People of Punk Rock Records. It's a nostalgic rush of anthemic hooks and heart-on-sleeve energy that could've soundtracked any MTV's 120 Minutes marathon. The track captures that feeling of late 90s freedom, cracked sidewalks, stickered guitars, the smell of sweat and stale beer in community-hall venues, and long summer nights when the world still felt small enough to dream your way out of it. Formed in 2017, Wasting Time has steadily built a catalog rooted in melody and sincerity: five EPs, three full-length albums, and a streak of singles that echo the honesty and grit of Alkaline Trio, No Use for a Name, MxPx, Blink-182, and Green Day. Their latest release, Hurry Up and Wait, cemented their reputation as one of Canada's most reliable carriers of melodic punk tradition, and “Ripped Blue Jeans” only deepens that lineage. Mixed and mastered by Matt Gauthier at Arc Studios, the single offers the first taste of their upcoming full-length, Are You Out Of Your God Damn Mind?, due out in the new year. The song hums with the spirit of a simpler time, before algorithms and playlists, when discovery meant burning mix CDs or catching a new band between Tony Hawk Pro Skater soundtracks. You can almost see the baggy Dickies, chain wallets, and flannel shirts tied at the waist. It's a nod to every kid who ever scribbled lyrics in the margins of a school binder or fell asleep to Dookie playing on repeat. Wasting Time capture that pulse without imitation; it's not nostalgia for its own sake, but a reminder of why those songs mattered in the first place. Donuts N' Glory were a band from SoCal. They opened for bigger acts, like No Use for A Name, Suicide Machines, Nonsense, Ten Foot Pole, The Queers, The Quincy Punks, etc. In 1996 they recorded “When Pregnasaurs Ruled The Earth” at Westbeach in Hollywood with Donell Cameron, the same studio where Fat Wreck Chords had used for recording many of its bands in their early years. After the release of their record, they toured the west coast once, and toured to the east coast and back twice. A second album was never recorded. This is an accidental 2 part interview. I talked to their drummer Gary in Episode 114 which you can find on youtube or thiswasthescene.com since podcast apps only keep your current 100 episodes. Things discussed: Ohio State vs Michigan recruiting: Maybe you guys don't want to be bragging that your scouting at OL and DB sucks. Like, it's not a flex that you didn't recruit Rod Moore, bro. Roebuck vs the the Andersons—you can say the twins are good fits for OSU if they develop into pass protectors, but if you ask St. Eds people, Roebuck's been their monster and Michigan's been on him for years…it's not like 3-stars vs two 4-stars is a fair representation. Is Ryan Day in trouble if he loses in Ann Arbor? The manner matters. Rod Moore says Ja'den McBurrows is one of the best man coverage guys on the team. He can hit. Don't pencil Amorion ahead of Ja'den. He's got to develop as a film junkie but everything else is falling into place. "Jyaire Hill is gonna play." I preview the recruiting  profile, because I *love* this pickup. Think that Minter is looking at playing simpler coverages because it accesses all of these young players' abilities. We saw two busts in the spring game (Sabb and Hill) when their switching broke down. "Denard on defense." Linebacker is night and day: they have a full two-deep plus Partridge. Up front: seems like edge is a 4-3/3-4 platoon with McGregor/Stewart in the 40 sets and D.Moore/Harrell for 3-4. Portal shopping: Kicker, maybe a corner. Sam says receiver but we like what they have there. Tight end maybe? How about a fullback. Find a guy named Mack Stockbaker to be a pure fullback. Recruiting: Last guy in the picture: Prieskorn is M-OSU-PSU, with PSU the biggest fear, but none of the guys who developed those TEs are still there. Going for six guys on the OL: figure Guarnera is the center and then a 6th guy is a battle of 4 or 5 guys, like Max Anderson, Brandon Baker coming to visit, Bennett Warren might have M in the lead, Michael Uini almost put out a commitment graphic. Getting Sherrone done with OL recruiting by the end of June is great because he can help in other recruitments. Cole Cabana as a returner? Sure, but this year it's AJ Henning. Basketball: Hunter looks like he's going to sign with Kansas, which is where you sign if it's about the money because Kansas does not get outbid. Why are fans sour on Hunter? Ewing Theory potential: Michigan needs to find another guy who can play center but Tarris Reed and their portal pickups are all defensive guys. Olivier Nkamhoua? Sentiment from Tennessee is he'd rather be a pro, and college is a fallback option. Primarily a four but could slide to the five better than Tray Jackson. Hockey developments: Like the Warren pickup, ideal guy to pair with Edwards on the 2nd pairing so Truscott and Casey can be your top pair. If they get the Hobey Baker winner back they're going to have two of the best lines in hockey. Baseball: Tracy Smith has done a good job so far—seems more like Indiana Smith than ASU Smith.
