Newly refurbished with Ryan, Brant and Mark Miley! . . . YOU DON'T KNOW MOJACK is a podcast dedicated to exploring the entire SST catalogue, in order, from start to finish. During the podcast we will discuss all the releases that are part of our core DNA, as well as many lesser-known releases that deserve a second chance, or releases that we are discovering for the very first time (we actually don't know Mojack!). First and foremost we are fans, and acknowledge that we are not perfect and don't know everything – sometimes the discussion is more about a time, place, feeling, personal experience or random tangents, and less about the facts (but we will try to get to the facts too).
Joseph Fournier presents “part two” on how Pacific Walker circulation controls Earth's largest greenhouse effect: cloud longwave radiative forcing. He explains cloud radiative forcing terminology, cites literature claiming cloud greenhouse warming dwarfs CO2 forcing, and shows satellite-era links between trade winds, cloud shifts during ENSO, outgoing longwave radiation, and global/tropical temperature anomalies. He contrasts absorbed solar radiation, OLR, and Earth energy imbalance, arguing global averages can be dominated by regional Pacific dynamics. He reviews multidecadal “dimming/brightening” sunshine trends in Europe, Japan and the U.S., discusses aerosols vs natural drivers, and briefly addresses future uncertainty, AMO/IPO impacts, and solar/cosmic-ray hypotheses. 00:00 Welcome Back: Joseph Fournier & Why This Is “Part Two”02:15 Cloud Basics 101: Shortwave vs Longwave, Net Cloud Radiative Forcing05:51 Albedo Matters: How Small Cloud Changes Rival CO₂ Forcing08:40 Evidence in the Literature: Trendberth and Early Satellite Cloud Forcing Maps14:28 Clouds vs CO₂ Since 2000: Step-Change in Cloudiness and OLR16:56 Geography Over Global Averages: The Western Pacific Warm Pool Hotspot20:12 Warm Pool Size, SST, and Real-World Impacts (Winters, ENSO Timescales)22:48 Walker Circulation Explained: Where Deep Convection Sits in La Niña vs El Niño25:34 Warm Pool “Thermal Capacitor”: Thermocline Slosh, Water Volume, and Cloud Shift30:32 Sea Level Pile-Up and the Gravity-Driven Discharge During El Niño32:36 Radiation Signatures of ENSO: DLW/OLR Links to Niño Indices36:13 Cloud Forcing Ratios & Decadal Patterns: What El Niño Does to Warm Pool Clouds40:34 Global Signals: OLR vs Global Air Temperature and the ENSO Lead–Lag45:14 Trade Winds as the Control Knob: Linking Pacific Easterlies to Global OLR47:44 Tropical temps, OLR & trade winds: Walker circulation link48:42 Clouds as the “other knob”: absorbed shortwave (ASR) vs temperature50:29 2023 El Niño cloud changes: low-cloud cover & shifting albedo53:49 ASR vs OLR since 2000: the hiatus ends and the energy budget shifts55:44 Earth Energy Imbalance (EEI) vs GAT: why the correlation breaks57:58 Seasonal cycle first: EEI swings, hemispheres, clouds & land–ocean contrast01:00:10 Wrap-up: two greenhouse effects & a call for academics to test it01:02:54 Sunshine hours & AMO: UK/Europe brightening over the 20th century01:07:26 Aerosols vs clouds: modern satellite trends and the “brightening” debate01:11:53 Global dimming/brightening goes global: Japan/China records & Pacific teleconnections01:12:56 Natural vs human drivers: when aerosols don't explain surface radiation01:18:13 Forecasting the next decade: sun, AMO/IPO, cooling claims & big uncertainties01:26:17 Closing remarks: slides, Substack, and the climate–energy–geopolitics linkMore information about Joseph Fournier: https://co2coalition.org/teammember/joseph-fournier/His 2024 presentation: https://youtu.be/P2hVW0R67CYJoseph's Substack: https://josephfournier.substack.com/X: https://x.com/JosephF55175005=========Slides, summaries, references, and transcripts of my podcasts: https://tomn.substack.com/p/podcast-summariesMy Linktree: https://linktr.ee/tomanelson1
For decades, the physical equipment underpinning the electric grid has remained largely unchanged: passive, "dumb" devices installed as far back as the 1970s that lack much real-time control. But today, in the face of skyrocketing energy demand, a new class of technologies has emerged. In this episode, Drew Baglino, the founder and CEO of Heron Power, returns to the show to discuss his company's new generation of solid-state transformers, or SSTs. After a 17-year career at Tesla — where he led energy and powertrain development — Drew is now focused on replacing the grid's aging infrastructure with these advanced power electronics. Shayle and Drew take a deep dive into the history of the power transistor, and then explore how the SST has the potential to transform the grid into a highly optimized and intelligent machine. They cover topics like: The evolution of power electronics Why we still haven't fixed the transformer shortage How Heron Power's SSTs remove legacy transformers and switches to create a substantial uplift for project developers The potential to remove 70% of traditional electrical equipment at data centers by distributing power directly to the rack Why Drew thinks SSTs offer a "pathway toward affordability" Resources Catalyst: Drew Baglino on Tesla's master plan Latitude Media: Inside Heron Power's plan to transform the grid Catalyst: Understanding the electric transformer shortage Open Circuit: The grid resilience dilemma Latitude Media: These Autogrid alums want to change how data centers use power Credits: Hosted by Shayle Kann.
Alan Stoker is a world-renowned boat racer and the builder of Stoker Boats. An innovator whose career spans the formative decades of Mod VP outboard racing and tunnel-hull development, Stoker was raised in Southern California. This episode was recorded shortly after his third straight victory at the 2024 Parker Enduro. Stoker grew up immersed in boating through his father, John Stoker, owner of John's Custom Marine, where he began working weekends at just 11 years old. He started racing when his dad purchased a kneel-down racer from Ron Hill and spent time in the pits while his father crewed on the world speed record-holding Hustler jet engine boat. John Stoker also competed in the Parker Enduro with a Chrysler-powered Patterson, further cementing racing as a family pursuit. In 1976, when the first Evinrude V-6s were introduced, the Stokers bought a wood-plug Kona bottom, built a wood deck, and raced the Parker Enduro. A step up to a Witchcraft the following year, driving with Earl McKinney, saw the team win 12 out of 13 races. As competition in the V-bottom outboard ranks intensified, a partnership with Ron Baker of Baker Boats provided the Stokers with increasingly faster equipment. With the advent of modified V-bottoms, which eventually evolved into full-blown tunnel boats in the hugely popular Mod VP class, the Stokers were led to design what would become one of the most successful hulls of the era, the Stoker Sport Tunnel (SST) Mod VP. These boats are still being produced today by Eliminator Boats. For its 45 years in operation, John's Custom Marine remained a loyal Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC) dealer. During much of that time, Stoker was often the lone competitor powered by an OMC Evinrude. His many successes behind the wheel in Mod VP competition were rivaled only by his reputation as a highly skilled and innovative engine builder. Stoker later climbed back into the driver's seat alongside his old friend and longtime competitor, the late Greg Foster, to win the Parker Enduro in 2012 and again in 2017. The appeal of running a new V-8 Mercury on one of his 22-foot SST hulls led him to team up with boat owner John Roth, a partnership that dominated the event from 2022 through 2024. An attempt to tie old friend Todd Bowden's record of four consecutive Parker Enduro victories was ultimately thwarted in 2025, when Stoker was forced to withdraw at the last minute due to back issues. If history is any indication, Alan Stoker's story at the Parker Enduro is far from finished.

Energy security represents one of Taiwan's most pressing challenges. With virtually no domestic fossil fuel resources and limited renewable energy potential relative to its needs, the island imports approximately 98% of its energy. The semiconductor fabrication plants that drive the economy are particularly energy-intensive, requiring uninterrupted power supplies to maintain their precision manufacturing processes. Any disruption in electricity can halt production lines worth billions of dollars, making grid stability and efficient power generation not merely infrastructure concerns but fundamental pillars of Taiwan's economic competitiveness. This reality has driven the island to pursue cutting-edge power generation technologies, including advanced combined cycle plants that can deliver maximum efficiency from imported natural gas. One such plant, the Sun Ba II facility, entered commercial operation in May 2025. It was recently recognized as a 2025 POWER Top Plant award winner. “That this project got recognized with your power plant award, I think this is really a nice story and a nice finish I would never have expected when I came here,” Thomas Ringmann, director of Business Development with Siemens Energy, said as a guest on The POWER Podcast. Sun Ba II is a 2 x 1 multi-shaft configuration, which means there are two gas turbines and two heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs) serving one steam turbine. The gas turbines and the steam turbine each have their own generators. “We have used in this project our latest and biggest gas turbine—the SGT-9000HL,” Ringmann explained. “The steam turbine is a SST-5000, so that's a triple-pressure steam turbine with a combined HP [high-pressure] and IP [intermediate-pressure] turbine, and a dual-flow LP [low-pressure] turbine. Also, we had an air-cooled condenser, condensing the steam from that steam turbine, and we had a three-pressure reheat HRSG, which was of Benson-type technology.” The project began at the peak of the COVID pandemic, which presented a large challenge. “Every project meeting, every design meeting, every coordination meeting were all done online,” Andy Chang, project manager with Siemens Energy, said. “Everything was done online, because nobody can travel. We just had to figure this out.” Effective collaboration among project partners was a key to success. “The collaboration is not only with our consortium partner—CTCI, an EPC [engineering, procurement, and construction] company—but actually with also the customer, Sun Ba Power,” Ewen Chi, sales manager with Siemens Energy, said. “Everybody has the same target, which is to bring power on grid as soon as possible. So, with this same-boat mentality—everybody sitting in the same boat and rowing toward the target—actually helped the project to be successful and to overcome many challenges.” Chang agreed that on-time completion was only possible with all parties maintaining a collaborative spirit. “This power plant right now is predominantly running on baseload operation,” Ringmann reported. “So, given that high grade of operations along with a high gas price, the efficiency of our turbines actually is a key contributor to an economic value of the customer.” Meanwhile, the lessons learned from this first deployment of HL technology in Taiwan are being applied to a new project. Siemens Energy and CTCI are now collaborating on the Kuo Kuang II power plant, which is under construction in Taoyuan, northern Taiwan. “Because we have this momentum and this mentality from Sun Ba II execution, now each side, they decided that they will keep their core team member from both sides, and they will continue to cherish this partnership with the next project,” Chang reported.

They talk about fatigue, seasonal shifts, lawn adventures, and the return of hay fever. We dive into replacing a legacy Salesforce integration with Saloon, frustrations with mocks, and how Saloon fakes have improved testing workflows. Michael walks through his experiments with AI tools like Claude and opencode to prototype fake gateways - treating AI as a “junior dev” pair. The discussion covers gateway patterns, middleware, registry-based response handling, and strategies for testing Salesforce without polluting production environments. From weeds and soil temps to software fakes and AI-driven dev, this one's a mix of everyday life and practical engineering insights.Show linksLawnHub – Michael's lawn care supplierSaloon (by Sam Carré) – Laravel/HTTP client packageSalesforce – CRM platform discussed in the episodeMockery – PHP mocking frameworkopencode – terminal tool for AI coding (by SST's Dax and Adam, Terminal Coffee)Claude – AI model used for coding explorationGitHub Copilot – AI coding assistantStripe test cards – referenced in gateway fake analogy

The Tex Diary of T. Laird! . . Chris D in conversation with David Eastaugh Chris D. (born Chris Desjardins) is an American punk poet, singer, writer, rock critic, producer, and filmmaker. He is best known as the lead singer and founder of the early and long-running Los Angeles punk/death rock band the Flesh Eaters. The Flesh Eaters were a staple of the L.A. punk scene in the 1980s.[7] The band played alongside seminal bands like The Misfits and The Meat Puppets.[3] A number of original Flesh Eaters releases, like River of Fever, were recorded through Shakeytown Music/BMI.[4] Others were produced by Upsetter, Invasion/Bomp, Zippo/Demon or SST. From 1989 to 1993 and from 1997 to 2000, Desjardins performed live with varying line-ups of The Flesh Eaters. During the first of these periods, three more albums came out on SST Records: Dragstrip Riot (1991), Sex Diary of Mr. Vampire (1992), and Crucified Lovers in Woman Hell (EP - 1993).Two additional albums, Ashes of Time (1999) and Miss Muerte (2004), were released.

He began recording and producing with the group and eventually joined to record their first album, C0002. Inspired by the punk rock and DIY movements of SST, BYO and Dischord Records tracks, in 1989 Happoldt created the logo and label Skunk Records and released the Ziggens' album on cassette. In 1990, Happoldt moved to Long Beach, California, where he met Sublime's Bradley Nowell at a party. Happoldt invited Sublime to make some live-to-DAT recordings. Intrigued by the Ziggens' cassette release, Nowell played a four-song demo for Happoldt, which Nowell had recorded before meeting Happoldt, and asked him to put it out on Skunk Records. Happoldt has been involved in some capacity with the Long Beach Dub Allstars, the supergroup Volcano, Lucky Boys Confusion, Unwritten Law, Slightly Stoopid, and Long Beach Shortbus.
