Being a musician and and looking for gigs is is an ongoing process. You're always selling yourself. They're always looking for work. But so many of them have other jobs, because that's what pays the bills. This podcast is a little different, more of a book review with an entrepreneurial focus. David Eisenstadt, who's a founder and longtime owner of CPGR a well know communications company is also a very well-known author of a number of books that cover Jewish performers that run under the name Musicians Under The Radar. you know, it's really interesting to find out what jazz trumpeter, Freddie Stone, Anvil's heavy metal guitarist, Steve Lips Kudlow, Lorne Green, Robbie Robertson, even singer-songwriter Mendelssohn, Joe have in common. They are all talented Jewish Musicians who appear in David's latest book. This interview is a little different, because, of course, all these musicians have an entrepreneurial flair as they're creating their own their own content and selling it. And, of course David is a long time entrepreneur which makes this even more interesting. Find out more and check at David's latest book MUSICIANS UNDER THE RADAR – 46 Notable Canadian Jewish Performers on Amazon or go to www.undertheradarbook.com. In this NBN episode, host Hollay Ghadery speaks with Michael Blouin about his poetry collection, Hard Electric (Anvil Press, 2024). Hard Electric is Michael Blouin's third book of poetry, a road-tripping, bridge-burning collection of the author's hard-won and soft-edged reflections that seem to stutter-step towards resolution while tumbling down a decided slant towards disaster. “Where Does My Heart Beat Now” was Celine Dion's first North American hit and in it she asks: ‘Where do all the lonely hearts go?' In Hard Electric Blouin presents a bleakly unsettling but ultimately life-affirming treatise that hints at his fascination with the same question and perhaps shuffles into the neighbourhood of an answer. That neighbourhood is peopled with late-night bars of Key West's Duval Street, the sharp spice of BBQ joints, sunburned beach motels, and Christmas lights frozen to February trees. And Susan Sarandon's cousin. It's a book not for the faint of heart, but for the lonely-hearted, and for those who know them well. About Michael Blouin: Michael Blouin has been a finalist for the Amazon First Novel Award, the bpNichol Award, and the CBC Literary Award. He has been the recipient of the Lilian I. Found Award, the Diana Brebner Award and the Archibald Lampman Award from ARC Magazine. His novel Chase and Haven won the ReLit Award for Best Novel, an award he received again for his novel Skin House. He is an Instructor at the University of Toronto, a guest lecturer for Carleton University, and has served as an adjudicator for both the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts. Two of his novels are now in a permanent archive on the Moon having landed with NASA in 2024. His collected poetry “Hard Electric” is slated to land at the lunar South Pole later in 2025. About Hollay Ghadery: Hollay Ghadery is an Iranian-Canadian multi-genre writer living in Ontario on Anishinaabe land. She has her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Guelph. Fuse, her memoir of mixed-race identity and mental health, was released by Guernica Editions in 2021 and won the 2023 Canadian Bookclub Award for Nonfiction/Memoir. Her collection of poetry, Rebellion Box was released by Radiant Press in 2023, and her collection of short fiction, Widow Fantasies, was released with Gordon Hill Press in fall 2024. Her debut novel, The Unraveling of Ou, is due out with Palimpsest Press in 2026, and her children's book, Being with the Birds, with Guernica Editions in 2027. TV writer & Record Collector Andrew Reich discusses his decade-long journey creating a documentary about Los Angeles music legends Redd Kross and the McDonald brothers' musical partnership. Topics Include: How Andrew made the leap from TV writing to filmmaking. Wife's suggestion sparked the documentary idea. Heard Steve McDonald's abduction story on a podcast. TV writing different from documentary making - can't control narrative. Documentary structure doesn't follow traditional storytelling beats. Director learned new storytelling techniques through editing. Documentary required extensive collaboration with editor Aaron Elders. Filming spanned approximately 10 years (2015-2025). Jeff McDonald's hairstyle changed dramatically throughout filming. Andrew discovered Redd Kross through "Teen Babes from Monsanto" album. Became fan at 13, requesting records for radio station. Redd Kross connects diverse bands from Black Flag to Go-Go's. Director considers Redd Kross one of Los Angeles' greatest bands. Documentary coincided with band's current renaissance and revival. Making the movie spurred new Redd Kross creative activity. Band created "Born Innocent" song specifically for the film. Initial filming was sporadic until Kickstarter provided funding. Created oral history structure from interview transcripts. Collected extensive archival material throughout production process. Film deliberately kept under 90 minutes for accessibility. Cut "Desperate Teenage Love Dolls" section despite importance. Film focuses on brothers' relationship rather than complete history. Steve's abduction possibly influenced band's fantasy/dress-up aesthetic. Andrew admires documentaries like "Anvil" and "Dig." Avoids rock critics in documentaries, preferring eyewitness accounts. Parents' interview about abduction was emotionally challenging. Wishes he had footage of certain legendary shows. New photographs emerged after film completion for eventual Blu-ray. Describes record collecting journey starting in New Jersey. Now focuses on first pressings of albums he loves. Sold unnecessary records to fund first pressing purchases. Australian bands currently producing best new punk music. Prefers seeing smaller shows over expensive arena concerts. Purchased rare Redd Kross/White Flag split single. Film rentals now available worldwide at reddkrossfilm.com/rent Rent "Born Innocent: The Redd Kross Story" here. In this episode of Grow Sessions, Tony Pavlakis sits down with Jim Megerson of Anvil Agrinomics about the complexities of designing efficient indoor cannabis cultivation facilities. Titled “Connecting Your Cannabis Grow: Easy Efficiency with Integrated Systems,” the episode emphasizes the critical need for system integration over siloed approaches. Early collaboration between architects and engineers is spotlighted as essential to avoiding costly structural and operational issues. They dive into key design considerations—like balancing upfront costs with long-term returns, adopting effective building automation systems, and tackling the integration of environmental controls (such as lighting and fertigation) from the start. The discussion also explores the value of consistent data tracking for smart operational decisions and the importance of a well-defined business plan that drives infrastructure needs, rather than forcing operations into existing building limitations.Strategic planning and integrated design are essential for the future of efficient indoor cultivation. Tune in now to gain practical insights from this must-hear episode.About Jim Megerson, Anvil ArgninomicsWith over 40 years of experience in the design and construction of building systems, Jim Megerson leads Anvil Agrinomics while keeping current with issues of building systems design, including indoor controlled environments for agriculture, energy efficiency standards and green building practices. During college, Jim completed a sheet metal worker apprenticeship program where he gained invaluable knowledge in the fabrication and installation of sheet metal products, HVAC equipment and associated hardware for large commercial, material handling and clean room applications. This combines world class engineering knowledge along with hands-on, tool belt wearing experience to balancing design, construction cost, operations & maintenance to achieve the best return on the owner's HVACD investment.Jim participates on multiple National Committees including the NCIAs' Facility committee and ASHRAEs' MTG on controlled environments for agriculture. He regularly speaks on these topics at national conferences.Anvil Agrinomics has completed MEP design on over 40 cannabis cultivation and manufacturing spaces and over 20 dispensaries in 20 different states. This combines to approximately 1.8 million sqft of cannabis industry facilities. If you have questions, you can reach Jim at jmeg@anvil-ag.com.Please visit www.anvil-ag.com to learn more about Anvil Agrinomics. Thanks for listening. In the early 80s, New York City's Gansevoort Meatpacking District, a small irregular patch of the West Village, was a wild confluence of meat market workers, gay men hitting The Mineshaft or The Anvil, transgendered prostitutes, homeless huddled around burn barrels, New Jersey mafiosos, veterans of three wars, heroes of the French Resistance, and Holocaust survivors. I was newly arrived to New York City when I began working at Adolf Kusy Meats in 1982, a young man barely out of college who had never imagined himself in any city, much less New York. I had decided I was going to be a fiction writer and while ignorant of what that might entail, I understood writers lived in New York. From the start, Kusy's seemed the perfect place for a budding writer looking for life experience, a singular, endlessly entertaining circus. When I interviewed Red, my old boss at Kusy's in October of 2013, the first thing he said was, “I wish now I had a tape recorder and had just recorded every day down there. Just the fucking stories alone, the shit people came up with every day, the insanity of that place.” It's also the story of a young couple fresh from the Midwest making a life together. We were college sweethearts, seduced by the glamour and excitement of the East Village, its fashion model roommates, conceptual art openings, and junkies lined up outside bombed out buildings. We tried to live with an intensity that could only lead us to ruin. The Heart is Meat (Oil on Water Press, 2025) is a re-creation of a mythic time and place in New York City that can never exist again, an evocation of a vanished attitude, a pre-networked American Romanticism. For this episode, I've come to realize that after years of interviewing fellow farriers, I struggle at interviewing the suppliers in our business. I think it's because I don't know enough of the background of that world to ask the right questions. Due to these struggles, this interview ended up being a shorter format than my typical long form. But in the end, I hope I was able to do Steve and his company justice in telling his story about a brand we are all familiar with in the farrier world. You will hear the familiar tinging of anvils in the background as we recorded this down at Vern Powell's Puerto Vallarta clinic in Mexico last year. I hope to see him again this year on the same trip. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did. As Bernard Montgomery plotted an offensive against Axis forces in North Africa from the east, Dwight Eisenhower was plotting one from the west.
In the Summer of 1992, the scorching temperatures in Manhattan were of little concern to Marsha P. Johnson. Her days didn't truly start until long after the sun had gone down. Fresh from the Pride Parade, Marsha made plans the evening of July 4th, 1992 to meet her friend Miss Kitty at The Anvil, one of the many gay bars lining Christopher Street in Greenwich Village. They were supposed to rendezvous at midnight. Only …Marsha never showed. Two days later, on July 6th, a passerby spotted something floating just off the Hudson River Pier shortly after sunrise. It was Marsha. The LGBTQ rights activist was dead at 46. Given Marsha's notoriety as an outspoken supporter of gay and trans rights, friends immediately suspected foul play. The NYPD and medical examiner saw things differently, quickly declaring Marsha's death a suicide by drowning. Those who knew the transgender pioneer well dismissed the notion that Johnson took her own life. Her history of substance abuse and depression notwithstanding, Marsha had never given any indication she was suicidal. Over 30 years have passed and still, Marsha P. Johnson's death remains shrouded in mystery. Follow Jami on Instagram & TikTok @JamiOnAir and join the Serial Streamers true crime TV club!
