A Note from Jacob: If you or someone you know are experiencing a mental health crisis, please call 988.   It is a pleasure to welcome singer and actress Marla Mase to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast.  A native New Yorker, Marla was born in Brooklyn and raised in Canarsie. At 18, she moved to Tribeca, where she lived for 32 years, raised her two children, and founded PARTYpoopers/partySWANK, one of NYC's premier event planning companies. In addition to her entrepreneurial success, Marla is a versatile artist—an accomplished writer, performer, recording artist, and the COO of Brooklyn-based True Groove Records. She recently returned from her third whirlwind tour of the UK this year, promoting her eighth and ninth album releases, The Fine Art of Pissing in the Bushes and Infinite They Went (vinyl). She is touring Being Somebody, a show she co-wrote and performs alongside her 88-year-old father, Dr. Howard Mase, to sold-out audiences across the East Coast. Her other theatrical works have been featured at prestigious venues such as La MaMa ETC, NYC SummerStage, NJPAC, SXSW, and Nuyorican Poets Café.   Marla Mase is also the founder of The Lael Project. Lael, a talented singer and graduate of the University of Southern California's prestigious Thornton School of Music Popular Music Program, had struggled with depression, anorexia, and suicidal thoughts from a young age. Despite her battles, she chose to help others, working at a treatment center in Los Angeles for individuals suffering from mental illness. Lael's empathy and understanding profoundly impacted those she worked with, many of whom have shared with Marla how her daughter saved their lives. “After she died, I received numerous emails, texts, and calls from residents who told me that Lael was the reason they were alive today,” Marla recounted. “Lael was not a therapist per se, but they felt she understood what they were going through better than anyone else.”   Marla's mission now is to honor Lael's legacy by using her music to help others recognize the signs of suicide and seek help. The Lael Project is a two-volume album featuring both original songs and covers recorded by Lael during her brief but impactful music career. The project features re-mixes, never-before-released material, live recordings dating back to her pre-teen years and remastered versions of her two existing albums, Burden to Bear (2013) and Life in Color (2015). Scheduled for release in 2025 under Brooklyn's True Groove Records, The Lael Project aims to open conversations about mental illness and break the stigma around suicide.    On this episode of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Marla Mase discussed the stories behind several of her songs, including “Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick,” “Falling Sideways,” and “All Fall Short.” She also discussed how you can get involved with the Lael Project.Let's connect on social media: A) BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/jacobelyachar.bsky.socialB) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JacobElyachar/C) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jacobelyachar/D) Threads: https://www.threads.net/@jacobelyacharE) Twitter (X): https://x.com/JacobElyacharF) YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@JacobElyacharBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/jake-s-take-with-jacob-elyachar--4112003/support.

Today, the Spotlight shines On Christian McBride, a musician, recording artist, prolific composer, arranger, producer, cultural curator, dedicated educator, and mentor.Christian has been called the hardest-working person in jazz, and based on what I just rattled off, that might be underselling it. From his early days in Philadelphia soaking up the sounds of Philly Soul to sharing stages with legends like Ray Brown and Chick Corea, Christian has become a bridge between jazz's rich history and its vibrant future. These days, you'll find him leading his new band, Ursa Major, hosting NPR's Jazz Night in America, mentoring the next generation of musicians, and somehow finding time to work on a new big band album featuring twelve different vocalists. He's also preparing for an upcoming funk tribute show with none other than George Clinton and Savion Glover at NJPAC.Whether laying down the groove with Inside Straight, his Big Band, or any other celebrated ensemble, Christian brings an irresistible combination of soul, swing, and storytelling to everything he touches. Today, we'll explore his journey from Philly to the world stage, his passion for record collecting, and why he believes being uncomfortable might be the best way to grow as a musician.Quick note: this conversation occurred when our baseball teams were still in contention. Americans under 30 years old have been through a lot in their young lives. Perhaps living through and witnessing the volatile political moment that was Donald Trump's presidency, a global pandemic, a violent attack on the U.S. Capitol, and growing devastation due to war in the Middle East, has led to their reported lack of trust in several key political and social institutions. And yet, as we hear in this episode, Gen Z is deeply engaged with the issues and ideas that will improve their experiences as young adults who want their personal rights protected, and the ability to have safe communities and economic security. Gen Z voter voices are at the center of this conversation, hosted live by Kai Wright at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. We hear from journalist Rachel Janfaza, who covers the political culture of the Gen Z generation; Askar Mirza, commissioner of Ridgefield, N.J.; and Alexis Williams, who is a coder and a political and social justice content creator. They join Kai for a conversation about how they became engaged themselves and what they know about their peers' political priorities this election year.Special thanks to the entire staff at NJPAC, especially Donna Walker Kuhne, Kitab Rollins, Megan Barry and Shira Vickar-Fox. A math whiz from a young age, Chiang caught the attention of a teacher who encouraged him to apply to prestigious undergrad programs. Computer science was just beginning to take off when Chiang began at MIT, and he eventually migrated from math into computing. He worked at IBM over several summers, researching automatic programming (or early AI), earning both money and MIT credits. Through his work at IBM, he received his master's degree as part of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science's 6-A program. Finishing his studies at the dawn of the personal computer, Chiang resisted the call of Silicon Valley heeded by many of his peers. Instead, he stayed on the East Coast and joined a startup, founded by a fellow MIT alum, that focused on transactional computing in finance, designing systems to be crash resistant. He moved on to working on crash resistance at AT&T Bell Labs before starting a company called Intellimed, an early pioneer in electronic medical records. After selling the company, he worked as an independent consultant on projects in health care and finance.  Chiang had already met his future wife at MIT when she performed for the Chinese Student Club in a dance troupe visiting from Taiwan. (Chen was the troupe's lead dancer; Chiang was the club's president.) The two stayed in touch, and Chen eventually emigrated to the US to attend New York University. They married in 1982, and Chen started her namesake company six years later. By the time Chiang decided to step away from consulting and dedicate himself full time to the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company, he had also served on a panel evaluating grants for the NEA and on the board of the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation.  Find out more https://www.nainichen.org/company Follow on Instagram @nainichendancecompany Please leave us review about our podcast Follow Joanne Carey on Instagram @westfieldschoolofdance And follow  “Dance Talk” ® with Joanne Carey wherever you listen to your podcasts. Chuck Lambert Interview Chuck's musical education started long before he picked up a guitar. At age eight, he studied oboe and piano.  Four years later his godfather exposed him to the musical diversity of Caribbean culture and encouraged him to play guitar.  While in high school he played bass and guitar in small R&B combos, rubbing elbows and jamming with future members of Parliament Funkadelic. While attending Lafayette College in the early 70's, he was a member of the Tim McCabe Blues Gang. The band's primary function was that of a backup band for touring blues legends on the East Coast college circuit. It was then that he was able to play for legends John Lee Hooker, J.B. Hutto and Screamin' Jay Hawkins. He also gained valuable exposure playing college parties and small clubs in the Delaware River Valley. Most recently, Chuck has been playing guitar and singing his blues for crowds up and down the Jersey Shore, Philadelphia New York City and metropolitan New York areas while always returning to play venues in his hometown of Red Bank, NJ. As a member of the Norman Seldin Big Band, The Panama Chapel Band, The Cal Vetrane Blues Band, The Haugenes Project and a guest artist with The Red Bank Blues Band, Heavy Soul, Herd of Blues, Al Holmes and The Tribe, Poppa John and The Jam Band he has lent his vocal talents and guitar to many a fantastic night.  Chuck has led the band as they opened for popular artists such as Little Feat and Kenny Wayne Shepard. The band has performed in prestigious musical venues like NJPAC, The Count Basie Theatre and SOPAC. They have performed at Le Festiblues International de Montreal; The Riverhead Blues Festival in Riverhead L.I.; The Blues, Brews and BBQ Festival at Six Flags Great Adventure, Freehold NJ; The Westfield Jazz & Blues Festival in Westfield NJ; The Red Bank Jazz & Blues Festival, Riverfest and The Jazz in the Park Series in Red Bank NJ; The Clearwater Festival at Gateway National Park at Sandy Hook NJ and Asbury Park NJ; The Blues by The Beach Concert Series in Long Branch NJ and represented The Jersey Shore Jazz and Blues Foundation in 2007 and 2013 at The International Blues Competition held in Memphis Tenn.   For more on Chuck Lambert-https://www.chucklambert.com/schedule

Today on Crushing Classical, you'll hear my interview with Ariel Grossman, Founder & Artistic Director of Ariel Rivka Dance. I've never talked with a choreographer before and I just loved finding all of the parallels between our worlds.  This episode is brought to you today by Happiest Musician Coaching. You are amazing, and I believe in you. What are you trying to create?  What do you need your career to be and do for you? What are you not seeing that you need to do and work on?  I love these conversations and supporting musicians like you. For a limited time, I'm offering a free 30-minute call to get you some clarity around your next steps, and see how I might help you get unstuck!  Ariel Rebecca (Rivka) Grossman is a native New Yorker, who trained at LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and the Performing Arts and Joffrey Ballet School. In 2008, she founded an all-female contemporary company, Ariel Rivka Dance. Most recently, Ariel received a 2023 Fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Ariel's work has been presented worldwide, including BAM Fisher, NJPAC, Bryant Park, NYLA, Baruch Performing Arts Center, Martha Graham Studio Theater, NYU Tisch, Rutgers University, Roxbury Performing Arts Center, and in Philadelphia, Baltimore, Houston, Cleveland, Florida, Oklahoma, Detroit, Memphis, Istanbul, Turkey, and in 2023, Perigord, France and Bari, Italy. She has been commissioned by Dance Lab NY, Konverjdans, Ballet Vero Beach, and Skidmore College. Collaborations include Rioult Dance NY, Taylor 2, Heidi Latsky, Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company, and Sean Curran. Ariel is a past recipient of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (New) Moves Fellowship, Monira Performance Residency, and a Nimbus Arts Center artist residency. ARD is an awardee of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, the Nathan Cummings Foundation, The Charles & Joan Gross Family Foundation, the O'Donnell-Green Music & Dance Foundation, Jersey City Council of the Arts, and New Jersey State Council on the Arts and more. Ariel draws inspiration from the struggles and joys of the human experience, particularly through being a woman and mother of two. Through collaboration, Ariel encourages her artists to bring themselves to the work—molding pieces that are striking, evocative, and multi-layered. This conversation was fascinating. Firstly, because I loved hearing Ariel talk about her art in a way that was both brand new to me and also completely relatable. The connections are so clear and it's amazing to think about movement, interpretation, and leadership in a totally different field than my own.  Secondly, because I loved hearing her take real ownership of her own strengths - I don't hear this nearly often enough from people, even the amazingly accomplished people I'm interviewing right here, and ESPECIALLY from working musicians.  I know you will love this interview. If you are in NYC, catch Ariel Rivka Dance's 15th Annual Season presented by NYU Tisch at the Jack Crystal Theater on May 31st-June 2nd, and a special family matinee co-presented by 14Y Theater on June 3rd.  Here's a teaser for her upcoming collaboration, Never Fade Away Follow Ariel Rivka Dance on Instagram at @arielrivkadance or @arielgrossman; or on Facebook Thanks for joining me on Crushing Classical!  Theme music and audio editing by DreamVance. Stef, as she is affectionately called, is the artistic director & founder of the Grammy-Award winning choir, Jubilation; and has built her life and career around music. Rev. Stef formed the acclaimed choir, Jubilation, in 1998 at the request of New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) CEO Larry Goldman and Newark Councilman/Assemblyman Donald K. Tucker. She has led the choir in numerous performances nationally and internationally since that time. Jubilation's first album “Launch Out Project” was released in 2009 followed by o Happy Day in 2010; 2013 Jubilation Christmas; 2018 It's All about You and in 2022 Worship Him. Jubilation won a Grammy after being featured with Latifah on the 2009 compilation album, Oh Happy Day: An All-Star Music Celebration, and also sang behind her at the 2010 Super Bowl. Jubilation's reputation as New Jersey's most decorated community choir dates to 1999, when Minatee, known to all as Rev. Stef, auditioned more than 300 singers from the tristate area for a Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration at NJPAC. She selected 120 from that group, including Queen Latifah's mother, Rita Owens. The group went on to sing that year with Shirley Caesar, another gospel giant. In 2002, Jubilation was tapped as the choir on Ray Charles Celebrates: A Gospel Christmas Album. In 2010, the choir earned a Grammy with Latifah and other artists for a track on the compilation album Oh Happy Day. Support the Burning Ambulance podcast on Patreon: http://patreon.com/burningambulance Episode 22 of the Burning Ambulance podcast features an interview with violinist Regina Carter. She's one of the best known jazz violinists in the world, as well as a MacArthur fellow and a Grammy nominee. She’s originally from Detroit, and she got her start in an all-female group called Straight Ahead. From there, she moved to New York, joined the String Trio of New York with guitarist James Emery and bassist John Lindberg, and also started making solo records starting in 1995. She’s made 10 albums in all, including one that was a duo with pianist Kenny Barron. She’s worked with a broad range of musicians including Wynton Marsalis, Cassandra Wilson, Oliver Lake, Madeline Peyroux, Steve Turre, Terri Lyne Carrington, and James Carter, who’s also her cousin. Winning a Macarthur fellowship in 2006 has allowed her to work on some really interesting projects without having to convince a label of their value beforehand. Southern Comfort was an album that explored Appalachian and southern roots music as a way of tracing her own family’s history, and her latest album, Accentuate the Positive, which came out last year, was a tribute to Ella Fitzgerald, but it doesn’t feature the songs you’d expect. A lot of the pieces are obscure, and as a consequence she doesn’t really feel the need to perform them in a way that the listener might identify with Ella Fitzgerald. I met up with Regina Carter at NJPAC’s All-Female Jazz Residency, a week-long program for students from 14-25 in Newark, New Jersey. She was the artistic director, taking over from Geri Allen, who founded the program but who passed away suddenly a little over a year ago, in June 2017. The residency combines lectures and seminars with rehearsals and master classes, so that the women who are taking part learn from each other as well as from people who are already making careers in jazz. And it goes beyond music, as we talk about in this interview – they also learn about branding yourself and maintaining a social media presence, about what radio expects from an artist and how to make an impression on journalists and DJs, and other things that will allow them to become professionals and avoid pitfalls in their careers. I had originally planned for this to be a joint interview with Regina Carter, saxophonist Tia Fuller, and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, all of whom participated in the residency, but it wound up just being a conversation with Ms. Carter. I think it’s really interesting, though, and she’s got a lot to say not only about her music but about the residency and the state of the jazz business, so I hope you’ll enjoy it.

Mostly sunny with high temperatures in the upper 40s. U.S. SUPREME COURT HEARING SPORTS-BETTING CASE TODAY Gov. Chris Christie is in Washington, D.C., today to listen in as the U.S. Supreme Court hears oral arguments about whether sports betting should be legal in New Jersey. Christie has a lot at stake in the case, Kevin Draper and Nick Corasaniti write in The New York Times, as the governor – who has very low approval ratings – looks for something to cement his legacy. If New Jersey loses in court, Christie’s reputation could take another hit. BEAR HUNT UNDERWAY, BUT IT MIGHT BE THE LAST ONE The second part of the 2017 bear hunt began this morning, and if Gov.-elect Phil Murphy fulfills his campaign pledge, it will be the last for a while. In a statement, Murphy said before authorizing any more hunts, he wants a better understanding of the effectiveness and "proof it works better than non-lethal options," Bruce A. Scruton reports for the New Jersey Herald. In the first part of this year's bear hunt, held in October, hunters bagged 244 bears. THE TRAFFICKERS NEXT DOOR: DRUG CARTEL GETS A FOOTHOLD Members of the Mexico-based Sinaloa drug cartel are living in New Jersey, often going unnoticed in local communities, Ken Serrano reports for the Asbury Park Press. “They’re in sleepy towns,” State Police Detective Sgt. 1st Class Larry Williams said. “They’d rather be in a Willingboro or another place where they can’t be robbed or can’t be found. They want to blend into their surroundings.” It’s estimated that the cartel controls about 90 percent of the wholesale heroin that comes into the state. SHOULD FAILURE BE AN OPTION IN NEW JERSEY SCHOOLS? A growing number of school districts are adopting “no zero” grading policies, in which any student who shows up and makes a reasonable effort will earn a grade of at least 50 percent. This has opened debate about the purpose of grades, Carly Sitrin writes for NJ Spotlight. Are they meant to be rewards and punishments, or measures of proficiency? Newer approaches to grading, like no-zero and second-chance testing, are drawing objections from students as well as some teachers and administrators. DISCUSSION OF SEXUAL HARASSMENT TAKES TO NJPAC STAGE When Stephen Colbert, host of “The Late Show,” and Samantha Bee, host of “Full Frontal,” took the stage at NJPAC on Saturday night for the annual Montclair Film Festival fundraiser, the conversation quickly turned to the flood of sexual harassment reports in the news, Sharilyn Johnson writes for Vanity Fair. “The speed and velocity of which everything is coming forward is impressive to me,” Bee said, “and I’m happy to be alive in this moment where people are feeling freer with their stories.” ICYMI: BILL TO BAN BUMP STOCKS ADVANCES IN ASSEMBLY Legislation to ban the bump stock, a device that allows semiautomatic weapons to fire more rapidly, was advanced Thursday by the Assembly Law and Public Safety Committee, Brent Johnson reported for NJ.com. The bump stock was used in the mass shooting two months ago in Las Vegas in which 58 people were killed. The proposed legislation calls for penalties of three to five years in prison and a fine of up to $15,000.

Join us this week as we welcome pop music singer songwriter, Elizabeth Luthringer. Hailing from Toms River, NJ., Elizabeth got her footing in music at the AMTC (Actors, Models, and Talent for Christ) SHINE event in Orlando, FL. She was involved in numerous showcases and was scouted by a talent agent there. This led to her recording her 5 song EP album, “Déjà vu” in Nashville this past year. In addition to her solo career, recently she toured the east coast with an a cappella group called The RockNRoll Chorus. The group performed at places like Full Sail University and NJPAC. They sang with well-known bands such as Jefferson Starship and Lou Gramm of Foreigner. This past weekend, they were one of the guest performers at an online TV show, Keeping Up With Cool, at their one year anniversary celebration. It was a red carpet event in NYC, benefiting The Wounded Warrior Project. We will talk to Elizabeth about her upcoming schedule, get a behind the scenes look at her music, feature her latest songs, and ask her to share her message for the troops. Please be sure to visit Elizabeth Luthringer at http://elizabethluthringer.com/ and spread the word. Fans are welcome to call in and speak live with Elizabeth during the show (718) 766-4193. If you would like to participate in the live chat during the show, you must sign up on the show site first and then log in during the show. And as always we will give shout outs to our deployed military listeners. Be sure to join us, Sunday 2/15/2015 at 4 PM EST! Our message to the troops....WE do what we do, because YOU do what you do.
