Greetings! The winter solstice, or hibernal solstice, occurs when either of Earth's poles reaches its maximum tilt away from the sun. This happens twice yearly, once in each hemisphere. For that hemisphere, the winter solstice is the day with the shortest period of daylight and longest night of the year, and when the Sun is at its lowest daily maximum elevation in the sky. With the winter solstice having occurred on December 21st and the advent of winter, it seemed appropriate to play music addressing these topics. Enjoy! Greetings! One of the joys of hosting PTE over the past 35 years is the opportunity to present multiple genres over a two hour period and make the flow, or non-flow, of the program interesting. This week we have creative improv, brushing on both jazz and classical realms. Then we move one to contemporary composition, electroacoustics & experimental ambient. And that's only in Phase One... Greetings! So, during my recent jaunt to Europe, I found a killer used CD/vinyl store in Budapest and was tempted to dispose of my clothes and just fill by suitcase up with CDs. The track from George Harrison's "Electronic Sound" is a sampling from the stack I did procure, with other items likely to show up in the coming weeks. I'm also happy to highlight electric guitarist Garrett Gleason's "Myths & Hymns", incredibly imaginative take on Adam Guettel's beautiful song cyle. Enjoy! Few saints exemplify the power of Catholic leadership more than a simple Italian nun named St. Frances Xavier Cabrini. Although plagued with bad health and many restrictions in her life she found a way to be incredibly productive founding schools, orphanages, and hospitals on four continents. She teaches us to overcome whatever lies in our way as we pursue God's will – sharing with us her personal motto, “I can do all things in Christ who strengthens me.”

Here are the top five takeaways from the episode:Resilience and Innovation Are InseparableResilience isn't just about surviving tough times—it's about using those moments to innovate and come out stronger. The ability to get punched in the face and keep going is essential for anyone aiming to grow, both personally and professionally.Surround Yourself with the Right PeopleThe people in your circle—whether they are teammates, clients, or friends—fuel your resilience. Their support, energy, and feedback help you stay strong and keep pushing forward. Choosing the right circle can make all the difference.Innovation Is More Than Just Ideas—It's ExecutionInnovation isn't just about generating great ideas; it's about implementing those ideas effectively. You need the processes and grit to take ideas from concept to impact. Creativity is important, but real innovation happens when you can deliver and scale those ideas.Growth Happens in Uncomfortable SpacesStepping outside your comfort zone and challenging your assumptions leads to real growth. Whether it's in your business or personal life, asking tough questions and being open to change unlocks new opportunities and helps you level up.Wanting More Is Okay, but You Need a PlanIt's great to want more in your life, whether it's in your business, relationships, or health. However, wanting more and getting more are two different things. You need a clear plan and the willingness to adapt in order to achieve that next level.ONE TRUTH: Growth requires both resilience and innovation. You can't just push through challenges, you need to evolve through them. It's not enough to simply endure; you have to adapt, innovate, and turn obstacles into opportunities to truly thrive in both your personal and professional life.

This episode features an interview with Allison Breeding, CMO, Apptio, an IBM Company that provides data insights that empower leaders to make smarter financial and operational decisions. In this episode, Allison talks about shifts that have stuck around post-covid, getting really clear on personas, and pushing the envelope through experimentation. Key Takeaways:It's worth pushing the envelope and trying out-of-the-box approaches. If you're not pushing the boundaries a little bit, you're not trying hard enough. When the market is turbulent and shifting, you have to be able to adjust your value prop and positioning to endure. Apptio made a big shift into digital marketing during COVID. Then, when the market plunged after hitting a high, they were able to shift to allow for continued success. Focus groups, and feedback from partners, prospects and employees, can inform the direction that you need to go in and support your efforts to understand your value proposition. Quote: “We've been doing a lot of really fun kind of guerrilla, out of home concepts, outside of events. Getting our hands slapped every now and then, but that's okay. If we're not getting in trouble, we're not pushing the envelope enough. But yeah, we're kind of trying to own the spaces that people are kind of in the mindset of thinking about our product in. And so whether that's airports or outside of event venues, on taxi cabs, on trains, that sort of thing around the events that we're participating in.”Episode Timestamps:*(03:45) The Trust Tree: A bottom-up and top-down approach*(17:35) The Playbook: Spending money fast and utilizing events *(32:31): The Dust Up: Navigating the founders' mentality*(34:58) Quick Hits: Allison's Quick Hits Sponsor:Pipeline Visionaries is brought to you by Qualified.com, the #1 Conversational Marketing platform for companies that use Salesforce and the secret weapon for pipeline pros. Greetings! Welcome to Pushing The Envelope's annual celebration of International Strange Music Day, the brainchild of New York City musician/composer Patrick Grant & creator of the public music ensemble, Tilted Axes: Music for Mobile Electric Guitars. Greetings! Happy Post-Birthday to Terry Riley! (June 24th) Enjoy an early composition from 1965 followed by a new composition honoring Terry Riley's, "Poppy Nogood and the Phantom Band", the "B-side" of his classic release, "A Rainbow In Curved Air". " Poppy Nogood and the Phantom Band" is a saxophone-based drone piece featuring tape loops and edits, drawing on Riley's all-night improvisatory performances in the 1960s. Greetings! I definitely employed a very "stream of consciousness" vibe as I programmed this week's show, starting with a cello track I couldn't fit into my earlier cello-themed show, getting to a couple of Petridisch tracks, 80's vintage Robert Wyatt's take on a Chic tune, new music from my compadre Joe Benzola and a bunch of other new things. Whew! Enjoy! Pushing the envelope: Competition kills Creativity and Your Spirit Recent EXAMPLES: The Women's Worldcup ended in disaster for the us, the United States … that is, according to the team mates, sports writers and announcers. Listen up and then I'll comment on why this competitive attitude killed their chances. 'USWNT is playing to not lose, not playing to win'" https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxSjYKl3j1zmjBSmB3bVP79v5HR9Pihwkd Here's an example of a recent “ clear the benches” scenario- same thing.. Competition killed the usual camaraderie https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxjZWYz9jIZJLJ75o7RoVwE92zcDIYOC3J Why do these two sports examples exemplify how competition kills creativity and spirit? Because one's imagination, vision of being creative in your sport is more focused on winning instead of focusing on your ELITE SPORT TALENT and SKILLS. A famous coach (basketball) only showed the team's strengths after each game. They WON SEVENTY - SEVEN CONSECUTIVE GAMES. ( not lost

A Way with Words — language, linguistics, and callers from all over
Sure, there's winter, spring, summer, and fall. But the seasons in between have even more poetic names. In Alaska, greenup describes a sudden, dramatic burst of green after a long, dark winter. And there are many, many terms for a cold snap that follows the first taste of spring: blackberry winter, redbud winter, onion snow, and whippoorwill storm, to name a few. Plus, the family that plays trivia games at home may end up cheering for their teen in high-school competitions. Also, playful prayers at the dinner table: Amen, Brother Ben! Pass the butter, let's begin! All that, plus retten up, push the envelope, with bells on, self-deprecating vs. self-depreciating, taffy pockets, pigeon pair, the end of pea time, a puzzle about pairs of words. Here we go, laughing and scratching!
