Nels Cline was born in California in January 1956. He started played guitar at the age of 12 and his early career is fairly jazz-based, before stretching into other directions. He has played guitar for Wilco, one of my favourite bands in the world, since 2004. He has a new solo album out on Blue Note Records entitled “Consentrik Quartet”, featuring Ingrid Laubrock on saxophone, Tom Rainey on drums, and Chris Lightcap on double bass. It's a really excellent album and I was thrilled Nels agreed to come on the show. We take a dive into “Consentrik Quartet”, but of course we also discuss his life with Wilco and beyond. I had a great time on this, and I hope you enjoy.

AI-labor saving tool or existential threat? On his new recording Server Farm, saxophonist and composer Jon Irabagon contemplates the potential threat and promise of this omni-present technology. For this recording Irabagon augments his regular quartet consisting of keyboardist Matt Mitchell, bassist Chris Lightcap, and percussionist Dan Weiss with violinist and vocalist Mazz Smith, trumpeter Peter Evans, guitarists Miles Okazaki and Wendy Eisenberg, bassist Michael Formanek, and percussionist and electronic musician Levy Lorenzo. Imitating AI, Jon spent several years doing a deep dive into the musical output of his collaborators, mining their entire catalogues for ideas that create the foundation of the music on this exciting recording.

Episode 11- Jon Irabagon: Always Moving Forward Jon Irabagon is always driving ahead whenever he wants to make a statement with a new recording. With his saxophones facing forward, Jon's bold and articulate improvisations draw on his singular drive to create a pathway for the future of jazz. He draws on the forces of the hand-chosen musicians, each becoming a lifelong ally in the music business. Jon is first-generation Filipino American, and the father of two girls. Jon is influenced more by the individualistic philosophies and accomplishments of the Chicago-based organization, the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, or AACM. These mixed complex-compositional ensembles, highly influenced by the works of John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, and Albert Ayler, are the basis for Jon's work but it's the future of this music that he seeks to play, not the rehashing of the music of the past.  Jon Irabagon 's life story begins in Chicago, the town of the tenor sound. It was in high school in the Chicago north suburbs when he was driven to seek out the music of the tenor titans: John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins and an alto titan, Sonny Stitt. After earning a Bachelor of Music from DePaul University, Jon went on to earn a Master of Arts from the Manhattan School of Music and then post-graduate studies at Julliard. In 2008 Jon went on to win the Thelonious Monk Saxophone Competition and years later the Philippine Presidential Award. Jon prefers to look ahead, seeking the future of the music, of the sound of jazz. For him, it's all about what's next. This is the main driving force for him. He's fortunate to have a gaggle of musicians with whom he can play the music. Furthermore, Jon has his own label, Irabbagast Records which gives him a label to publish music that may be considered more challenging to other commercial labels. Jon also accommodates his friends who are true to the music and the sound they prefer to play. In this episode we hear story after story about Jon and his music, his family, the creation of a record label so he can have a place to record his music, spreading the music as an instructor, and when Jon went to stay with his in-laws in South Dakota at the beginning of the pandemic lockdown intending an eight-week stay and winding up living with them for eight months, spending countless hours playing to the canyons, and so much more. The stories insistently pique your interest. So, strap yourself in for this ride.  This will be the opening episode, complete with two tracks of music. There is a bonus episode that completes the full episode. The interview weaves great tales and the music wraps it all up tightly. In the opening episode you will find this music. Thanks to Jon Irabagon for all the music. Please remember to subscribe if you haven't already.  The music tracks in Episode 11 include the following and with the noted personnel: Anchors (Outright! Innova Recordings, 2008) 8:27 Jon Irabagon-alto saxophone, Russ Johnson-trumpet, Kris Davis-piano, Eivind Opsvik-bass, Jeff Davis-drums  Mammoth (Rising Sun, Irabbagast Records, 2022) 11:59 Jon Irabagon-tenor saxophone, Adam O'Farrill-trumpet, Matt Mitchell-piano, Chris Lightcap-electric bass, Dan Weiss-drums When you're done with this episode, listen to the bonus episode complete with more music. Enjoy the conversation with Jon Irabagon, the sax player who's always looking forward. Here on Strictly Jazz Sounds. Thanks for listening. Steve Braunginn

She’s made a number of excellent albums as a leader and as a solo artist, and is also a member of groups like Paradoxical Frog with Ingrid Laubrock and Tyshawn Sorey, and Anti-House with Laubrock, Mary Halvorson, John Hébert and Tom Rainey. I saw that group perform at the Vision Festival at Roulette in Brooklyn back in 2012, and they’ve got three albums which are all worth your time. She also recently joined a group formed by cornet player Rob Mazurek, with Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and Chad Taylor, for his Desert Encrypts festival in Marfa, Texas, and they’ve released a live recording, Desert Encrypts Vol. 1. In this conversation, we talk about Kris Davis’s music, her label Pyroclastic, which is where her new album Diatom Ribbons is coming out and also where Chris Lightcap, who was on the last podcast, is releasing his Superbigmouth album, both next week. We also talk about composing, and arranging, and her work at Berklee College of Music, where she’s just joined the faculty. Support Burning Ambulance on Patreon Get the Burning Ambulance email newsletter Chris Lightcap is is a guy I’ve been aware of since the start of his career in the late 90s, when he was playing with Whit Dickey’s trio on the album Transonic. He was also a member of guitarist Joe Morris’s quartet with Mat Maneri on viola and Jerome Deupree on drums at first, and Gerald Cleaver later on. That group made three records in the late 90s and early 2000s, and then reunited for another record four or five years ago. Lightcap has bounced around and done a ton of projects in the last 20 years or so, as you do, but he’s been leading the band Bigmouth, with Cheek and Malaby and Taborn and Cleaver, for about a decade now. They’ve made several records together that are a kind of avant-garde groove jazz – hard to describe, but a lot of fun to listen to. Superette, which just debuted last year with a self-titled album, is more of an instrumental rock outfit – they even cover a Link Wray tune called “Ace of Spades,” so we talk about that a little bit in this interview. We also talk about writing and recording, about free jazz and the kind of porousness of boundaries when you’re an open-minded listener and player, and a bunch of other things. So there’s a lot here to listen to and think about, and it’s all pretty interesting, at least I hope so. A sketch for a new piece by 20th century jazz violinist Stuff Smith has surfaced. I am delighted to have as my first guest, bassist, composer, recording artist Chris Lightcap. Chris has played and collaborated with an amazing array of musicians: he is a regular in Regina Carter’s band, and over the years has played with Marc Ribot, Craig Taborn, Glen Hansard, Mark Turner, John Medeski, Jason Moran, Chris Potter and many more. His playing is featured on over 60 albums and as a bandleader/composer he has produced four critically acclaimed albums of original music–in 2000 he released his first solo album, Lay-up, followed that up with “Bigmouth” in 2002, Deluxe in 2010 and his 2015 release, the spectacular Epicenter, was featured as an “A” list jazz pick by Apple Music back in July and has received glowing critical reviews. It took us a few weeks to get our schedules in sync to do the interview, and I learned from Chris that syncing schedules with other musicians is actually one of the more significant challenges when making a collaborative record. We wasted no time getting down to our conversation, in fact we dove right in talking about his recent trip to Bogota, Columbia, more on that in a moment. Please note, all music heard in this podcast is by and/or features Chris Lightcap. Links to the music and other things we discussed can be found below.
