The second assassination attempt on President Trump once again highlights the incredible dangers of “chumming for monsters.” As the Irish Republican Army told U.K. Premier Margaret Thatcher after one of their bombs failed to kill the legendary Prime Minister, she had to be lucky every single time; the IRA had to be lucky only once. Lorette Velvette is a Memphis legend, having done time with groups like Alluring Strange, The Hellcats, Kropotkins, and a variety of top-notch solo LPs that mostly came out in Germany initially. Her influences draw on everything from post-punk to Memphis and North Mississippi Hill Country blues legacies all in a very special alchemy. Collaborations include recordings with Mick Collins (Gories), Dave Soldier, Jonathan Kane, Tav Falco, Moe Tucker, as well as a cameo on Sonic Youth's Washing Machine LP singing with Kims Gordon and Deal. Baxie talks to Rockabilly legend, performance artist, film maker, and author Tav Falco from Tav Falco's Panther Burns! This is a wild interview where Tav talks about his incredible beginnings, the music of Memphis, and about the late Alex Chilton (who co-founded the "unapproachable" Panther Burns with Tav in 1979.) Tav also talks about his latest album "The Nashville Tapes: Live at the Bridgestone Arena Studios". Listen on Apple Podcasts, SoundCloud, Spotify, and on the Rock102 website!
In the darkest depths of autumn's grasp, when the moon casts its pallid visage upon the world, a spectral eve unfolds, known as Halloween. 'Tis a night when the veil between realms grows thin, and tormented spirits, long entombed, are beckoned forth from their sepulchers. Shadows waltz in sinister rapture, and ghastly masquerades adorn the living, concealing their true essence beneath ghoulish guises. In the midnight hour, a mournful wind weaves through skeletal branches, whispering tales of forgotten souls, their phantasmal moans echoing through the ethereal abyss. A macabre dance of revelry and remembrance, Halloween bears witness to the timeless struggle between the living and the dead, a haunting refrain of mortality's relentless embrace.Includes tracks by: Tav Falco's Panther Burns, Ricochets, The Mummies, The Finks, Supercharger, The Hexxers, The Spooky, and more. The drummer, singer, and songwriter with the Hellcats, the Alluring Strange, and the Chiselers was a longtime provocateur and facilitator on the Memphis music scene. Rootsy Punk is a show of untamed music rooted in Country and Blues music. The music that kicked off the teenage rebellion over 65 years ago is still with us. I try with this show to focus on the wild side of some of the originators of Rock & Roll music and other artists from different eras until the present day since the big bang of modern music in1956. Rock music that rolls with a middle-finger attitude. The original drummer with Tav Falco's Panther Burns, he had already appeared on Alex Chilton's “Like Flies on Sherbert” performing “Baron of Love” and cemented his place in Southern fringe folklore. His memoir, ”Baron of Love: Moral Giant,” chronicles the long, strange trip, while his latest band, TURNT, with fresh offerings like “Methadone Takeout Party,” keeps the toes tapping and the tongues wagging. Little Victor was raised in Italy and Memphis and was dubbed "The Beale Street Blues Bopper" by his cousin-- the avant garde-blues filmmaker, producer and performer Tav Falco. While in Memphis, his uncle, noted blues writer David Evans and family friend Alex Chilton also encouraged the young Victor, who was already playing harp and singing, to pick up the guitar. He was soon performing weekly on Beale Street with Uncle Ben Perry. With influences such as these it's no wonder Little Victor is deeply rooted in traditional blues sounds, but also has a fiercely independent artistic sense of purpose. He's made several of his own records for Wild Records, El Toro records, and Germany's Rhythm Bomb records, and his most recent effort, "Deluxe Lo-Fi" features Kim Wilson, Carl Sonny Leyland, Big John Atkinson, Willie Buck, and Tomi Leino and Jo Buddy from Finland. Victor is probably best known for his long and successful association with Louisiana Red and the significant crossover success of their "Back to the Black Bayou", on Ruf Records. They worked closely together until Red's passing in 2012-- check out Victor's emotional performance in this video of his original "The Death of Louisiana Red". In the last several years, Victor has used his strong musical vision to produce artists such as The Jelly Roll Men (see NBB Episode 7), Shakedown Tim (see NBB episode 11), Sophie Kay of Paris, Harpdog Brown of Canada, Mo Al Jazz of France, Little Hat of the Netherlands and many others. Take a blues journey with No Border Blues, the only blues podcast focused on international blues artists and hidden blues scenes around the world. Delmark recording artist Johnny Burgin and producer Stephanie Tice shine a spotlight on notable international blues performers, discuss the blues scenes in their home countries, and present intimate and exclusive musical performances. A distant sound has caught your ear, you are walking, sleepwalking towards it; the sound of the reverberating Gretsch definitely has a foretaste of adventure that, for once, you could choose to experience. Before you set off in search of him, it is important to put on a shirt with a frill under a shiny but elegant jacket, to put on trousers that past excesses no longer allowed you to wear, a belt with a tasteful buckle. Then, a delicate operation, it's now a matter of taming your hair to go from hair improbability to a flawless hairstyle, using a comb that can eventually end up in your back pocket. Then, like Gustavo in his scenic kingdom, adopt the proud approach and haughty bearing of the seasoned tango dancer to approach the world with unprecedented assurance. Soutenez-nous !
The Grammy-winning author and filmmaker’s landmark book, “It Came from Memphis,” has just been reissued in a 25th anniversary revised edition. The cultural collisions between bluesman Furry Lewis, producer Jim Dickinson, Alex Chilton, pro wrestling, photographer Bill Eggleston, fife & drum bands, the Panther Burns, integration, and other disparate elements form a compelling narrative of outsiders, misfits, and rock ’n’ roll in this classic chronicle of the subterranean Memphis music scene. Ici "I Need Adventure" (1980) 3/ ACID EATER "top of spot" (Virulent Fuzz Punk A.C.I.D. - 2007). Des allumés japonais, dont ce premier album me ravit toujours autant ! 4/ EDDY CURRENT SUPPRESSION RING "I Can Be A Jerk" (Rush To Relax - 2010). 6/ THE FLESHTONES "The Dreg". Enorme morceau du premier album des Fleshtones, Roman Gods, en 1981. 7/ CURTIS MAYFIELD "Don't Worry If There's A Hell Below We're All Gonna Go". 9/ LUCILLE FURS "Another Land" (Another Land - 2019). 10/ GORILLAS "It's My Life". Enfin presque... 14/ THE OBLIVIANS "Clones" (Sympathy Sessions - 1996). J'ai toujours kiffé ce morceau, extrait de la compil Sounds Of Now de 1987. 16/ THE MONSTERS "Let Me Spend The Night With Your Wife". 19/ THE OUTSIDERS "Misfit" (CQ - 1968).
Ross Johnson is a Memphis music legend. He was a writer for Lester Bangs at Creem Magazine. He is the original drummer for Tav Falco's Panther Burns. He was witness to The Cramps recording sessions at Ardent Studios and Sam Phillips Recording Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. He has played drums alongside Alex Chilton and Jeffrey Evans. Quick witted and forever the story teller, I hope you enjoy our conversation.

VIPop #12 Fully fledged artist, Tav Falco, American musician, continues his solitary path, begun in the mid-70's, with flamboyance and courage.... In his amorous search for the most obscure songs of the American repertoire, but not that, in order to reappropriate them completely, we are not far from the alchemist's quest to transform lead into gold ... No one better than him can play with the codes of rock'n'roll, constantly and gracefully sneaking between light and shadow... Tav Falco in conversation with David Eastaugh Impressed by a 1978 performance of Falco's at The Orpheum in Memphis that culminated in the chainsawing of a guitar, Alex Chiltonteamed with him. They developed the self-styled "art damage" band, Tav Falco's Panther Burns. The group recorded a first album for Rough Trade at Ardent Studios in Memphis. Their previous 1980 session for the label at Phillips Recording was temporarily shelved (it was later re-released in 1992 on Marilyn Records as The Unreleased Sessions). Falco devoted some of his musical career highlighting great traditional artists who had not gained media attention. He introduced their work to his audiences and to writers following his work by performing Panther Burns shows on billings with these artists, recording interpretations of their songs, and occasionally collaborating with some of them on projects for small record labels he's been associated with, such as Au Go Go and New Rose. Among these artists were blueswoman Jessie Mae Hemphill and rockabilly pioneer Charlie Feathers. Falco and Lux Interior of The Cramps worked on the photography and liner notes, respectively, for the 1982 Honky Tonk Man album by Feathers. Both younger vocalists had been influenced by Feathers' energetic, hiccup-styled vocals of the 1950s. Falco has invited such musicians as Cordell Jackson, R. L. Burnside, Mose Vinson, and Van Zula Hunt to perform at this Panther Burns concerts. Falco has released numerous Panther Burns albums on small international indie labels. He also has co-released some recordings by his band and other Memphis-area artists on his own Frenzi label. Falco has appeared as an actor with small parts in films such as Great Balls of Fire! (1989 - USA), The Big Post Office Robbery (1992 - Hungary), Highway 61 (1991 - Canada), Downtown 81 (2001 - USA), and Wayne County Rambling (2002 - USA). Long a student of the tango under European and Argentine instructors, he appeared in Dans Le Rouge du Couchant (2003 - France) as a tango dancer, and choreographed his part in the film. He has appeared in several short films, most of which he produced and in some cases served as the filmmaker. These have been shown in underground arts venues such as The Horse Hospital in London. In 2003 six of Falco's short films were accepted and archived into the permanent collection of the Cinémathèque Française in Paris. The short films archived are Love's Last Warning(1996), Born Too Late (1993), Helene of Memphis (1991), Memphis Beat (1989), Shadetree Mechanic (1986), and 71 Salvage (1971). A selection of Falco's short films were shown in a retrospective at the Cinémathèque Française in 2006. His first feature film, Urania Descending, was announced in 2014, having been completed the prior year. Tav Falco has collaborated with Erik Morse, an American underground author, rock writer and journalist, on a two volume encyclopedic history and psychogeography of the city of Memphis, Tennessee, entitled MONDO MEMPHIS. Falco's book, Ghosts Behind The Sun/Mondo Memphis: Volume 1, is a study of Memphis beginning with the Civil War up to more recent autobiographical accounts set in the city. Morse's Bluff City Underground/Mondo Memphis: Volume 2 roman noir follows a West Coast graduate student and his encounters with a Memphis secret society. They were published by Creation Books; a paperback edition of Falco's volume was published in November 2011. Falco has said his main artistic purpose is "to stir up the dark waters of the unconscious." Falco has released more than nine album recordings.Conjurations was released in 2011 on a German label, Stag-O-Lee, and a French label, Bang! Records, followed by an American CD release on the Cosmodelic label in October 2011. A live album, Live In London, was released on Stag-O-Lee in 2012. In 2014, Falco compiled a double album of some of his favorite tracks from his music collection, Tav Falco's Wild & Exotic World of Musical Obscurities, released on Stag-o-Lee Records. The album set included a Panther Burns song, "Real Cool Trash", and liner notes by Falco. In 2015, Falco's first book of photography, a collection of images of the gothic South called Iconography of Chance: 99 Photographs of the Evanescent South, was published by Elsinore and distributed by University of Chicago Press. The same year, he toured with Panther Burns and released another album, Command Performance. Tav's most recent studio album is Cabaret of Daggers, released by ORG Music in November 2018.

I was interviewing Dave Alvin when he realized he had sat down next to an ant bed, and while talking to Tav Falco of Panther Burns for this podcast, he briefly hung up on me while the bandmate driving the van got popped for speeding. Such is the glamorous life of the touring musician. Falco made his name in Memphis in the early '80s by occupying the space where punk, art, and the avant-garde intersected. In 1979, he performed a cover of "Train Kept A-Rollin'" on a local television show, and that version prompted the host to ask, "That's anti-music, right?" then announce, "That's the worst sound I've heard come out on television." His Behind the Magnolia Curtain (1982) chronicles that phase of his career, and while his music has always come from a personal place, it was never as out as that again. In 2017, he surprised fans when he released A Tav Falco Christmas, which featured him playing some of the most popular songs in the Christmas songbook in ways that took the songs at face value. It seemed odd at first blush, but the title of his 1994 album--The World We Knew--could serve as his mission statement. His fascination with what we've lost over time was always going to lead him to Christmas music at some point. For more on Tav Falco and Panther Burns, here's a critical essay I wrote in 2012 an interview with him from the same time, and a review of the photography exhibit that he showed at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, accompanied by a showing of his films, and a concert by Panther Burns.

Writer, film director and musicologist Robert Gordon is a specialist in the music and history of the town of his where he still lives, the legendary American Music hub of Memphis Tennessee. He's written about Muddy Waters. Al Green, B.B. King, Otis Redding, Alex Chilton and beyond. Many writers have charted the course of Memphis music but almost none have done it with the emotional depth and deep historical knowledge that Gordon has and his works always stood out to musicians and music lovers as the work of a deeply-devoted fellow soul. Since 2003 Gordon has transformed himself from writer to filmmaker, making acclaimed documentary films, contributing to Martin Scorsese's THE BLUES series, adapting his Muddy Waters bio for the PBS "American Masters" series and producing works on ultimate cult band Big Star and Memphis' powerhouse r&b label, Stax Records. Gordon's vast curiosity and sense of history takes him away from music for his first theatrical film, the documentary BEST OF ENEMIES, co-directed with Morgan Neville whose documentary on the lives of backing vocalists 20 FEET FROM STARDOM won the "Best Documentary" Oscar in 2014. . BEST OF ENEMIES explores the debates between Conservative publisher William F. Buckley, and historical author, satirist and playwright Gore Vidal. Their ten articulately cantankerous bouts, held during the fledgling ABC Network's coverage of the Presidential conventions of 1968 are forever remembered for the moment when Buckley angrily lashed out at Vidal, threatening violence and calling Vidal “a queer” after Vidal labeled Buckley a Crypto-Nazi. The network news divisions saw big money in name-calling debates and the film suggests we've been down a dreary road ever since. We discuss BEST OF ENEMIES before falling into a conversation about Memphis music and arts, discussing Alex Chilton, Jeff Buckley, Tav Falco and Panther Burns, Isaac Hayes and the photographer William Eggleston.
