This is the second of a two-part podcast with jazz artist Regina Carter. In part one, we traced Regina's musical evolution, her upbringing in Detroit and the influence of that city on her musical development, and her transition from European classical music to jazz, and her move to NYC where she played with a variety of artists from Dolly Parton to Max Roach. We pick up today's podcast where we left off: Regina had released her first two solo albums and joined Wynton Marsalis to tour with his Pulitzer Prize-winning oratorio, Blood on the Fields. Today's music-filled podcast explores Carter's solo career and the albums she created centered on family's history from Motor City Moments (her love letter to Detroit) to Southern Comfort (which traces her father's southern roots). We discuss the experience of her being the first jazz artist to play and record with Paganini's famed violin “The Cannon,” her collaboration with NEA Jazz Master Kenny Barron, her receiving the MacArthur Award at a pivotal moment in her life, her work as a hospice volunteer, her commitment to teaching the next generation, and her thoughts about the violin and music. In the first part of this two-part podcast with Regina Carter, she discusses her upbringing and musical education in Detroit. Trained in European classical music, she was exposed to wide variety of music and while in high school, she discovered jazz violin and it was life-changing. She talks about the appeal of jazz, her two years in the New England Conservatory of Music, her return to Michigan and transition to jazz violin, her mentors Marcus Belgrave and Marvin Holliday, her time with the all-woman quintet “Straight Ahead,” her move to New York where she played with a broad array of artists from Chucho Valdés to Max Roach to Dolly Parton, the beginning of her solo career and being tapped by Wynton Marsalis to tour with his Pulitzer-Prize winning oratorio Blood on the Fields. (Next week, we continue our conversation with Regina Carter—we explore her solo career, her collaboration with NEA Jazz Master Kenny Barron, her receiving the MacArthur Award, her time as a hospice worker and much more!) Born in Santiago, Chile and raised in Concepcion, singer, composer and bandleader, Claudia Acuña, established herself on the Chilean jazz scene in her 20s. When she arrived in New York City in 1995, Claudia quickly gained recognition as a leading voice in a scene that was rapidly being transformed by brilliant Latin American jazz, plunging into collaborations with masters such as Jason Lindner, Harry Whitaker, Arturo O'Farrill, Guillermo Klein, Avishai Cohen, Branford Marsalis, George Benson, Louie Vega, Danilo Perez, and Tom Harrell. Claudia released five albums as a leader before slowing down to adjust to motherhood and restore her power. Returning after a decade-long hiatus in 2019, Claudia returned with her sixth album, the highly praised Latin Grammy nominated album Turning Pages. Then 2020 rocked the world. As the life slowed to a crawl, Claudia took time to reflect on the past and to find the core of her dedication in the power of music. She returned to fulfilling a long time desire to record an album with songs from her homeland. Titled DUO, the release features nine songs recorded as intimate duets with some of the finest musicians in the world - Fred Hersch, Christian Mcbride, Regina Carter, Russell Malone, Carolina Calvache, Arturo O'Farrell, and Kenny Barron. Claudia says that the simplicity of just two artists feeling the music and letting it flow through them, brought her to a new place as a singer. She told us, “I think all my albums are dreams and this was really one I didn't know I was ever going to do…It was the perfect time…to give me the honor not only to do this duet, but allow me…to take them [her friends and musical collaborators] with me to, what I call humbly and respectfully, the Latin American standards.”

Within about a week of home quarantine in March 2020, pianist Emmet Cohen started live-streaming shows every Monday night from his apartment in Harlem. At first it was just Cohen and his bandmates, drummer Kyle Poole and bassist Russell Hall, set up in Cohen's living room. Eventually they started inviting guests, and Emmet's Place became one of the spots for live jazz in pandemic New York. Six months in, it had really caught on: the Emmet's Place performance of “La Vie en Rose” featuring singer Cyrille Aimée has over 4 million views on Youtube. Since then, Emmet's Place has become a kind of jazz incubator in New York; featured guests have included legends like Houston Person, Victor Lewis, Joe Lovano, Sheila Jordan, Randy Brecker, Regina Carter, Christian McBride, Nicholas Payton, and dozens more. Cohen has one foot planted in the future and the other in the past. Maybe that's why he chose to call his most recent record Future Stride: as a nod to the stride piano that he loves and the modern world in which he lives. That tension between these two impulses, the old school and the new, is at the heart of the Emmet Cohen phenomenon. He's deeply rooted in the jazz tradition, and believes in the importance of oral history and intergenerational connection. When he was in his 20s (not so long ago!) he made a series of albums, live interviews, and performances featuring jazz masters Jimmy Cobb, Ron Carter, Benny Golson, Albert “Tootie” Heath, and George Coleman. He called it the Master Legacy Series. Meanwhile, he's an active digital citizen. He was quick to embrace streaming, NFTs, and direct-to-fan connection. (He offers a subscription service to his fans to support his work directly.) He's a product of the 21st century and he understands how to thrive in both physical and virtual space. We got together recently to talk about how he straddles the line between tradition and modernity, starting out as a prodigy in Miami, being a “repertory player,” his community in Harlem, “blues therapy” and the common lesson he learned from all his mentors.
