Ron's Amazing Stories

This time on  Ron's Amazing Stories, we're diving into one of Alfred Hitchcock's most celebrated thrillers—Shadow of a Doubt. Originally released as a film in 1943 and starring Joseph Cotten and Teresa Wright, the story gets a radio makeover in the Screen Director's Playhouse adaptation from November 1950. This time, none other than Cary Grant steps into the role of Uncle Charlie, bringing his trademark charm with an unsettling twist. What makes Shadow of a Doubt stand out in Hitchcock's catalog is its unique suspense style. We, the audience, know from the beginning that Uncle Charlie has a dark secret. The real tension comes from watching his niece slowly uncover the horrifying truth about the man she once adored. It's a masterclass in slow-burn suspense, set against the deceptively cozy backdrop of small-town America. On the podcast today, you'll hear: Background on Alfred Hitchcock's 1943 masterpiece. Cary Grant's turn as Uncle Charlie in the 1950 radio adaptation. A full presentation of the Screen Director's Playhouse episode of Shadow of a Doubt. So, grab your headphones, settle into your favorite chair, and prepare for a suspenseful ride into Hitchcock territory. "Life has been a journey I am proud of," Libra Forde. A perfect quote to not only describe Libra's life so far, but also this interview. Libra, the Executive Director of the Women's Foundation of Oregon was born and raised in New York City. The only child of two wildly talented parents (her mother was a successful runway model and Dad was Denzel Washington's first acting coach and the King of Cartoons on Pee-Wee's Playhouse), she talks about the influence they both had on her. Her parents were adamant that she go to college and think about a "real job," and while she says she struggled in college (it wasn't her first choice), she turned things around and made it work for her. The journey continues with a move to Hawaii, finding her voice in Toastmasters, becoming a keynote speaker, and working to make this place beyond our existence.

On the forty- ninth episode of All the Film Things, I had the pleasure of interviewing producer/ director Jonathan Berman! Jonathan Berman is a California- based producer/ director who has been working in the industry for nearly 40 years. Before making his own documentaries often focused on sub- cultures not often highlighted in mainstream media, such as Commune (2005) and The Shvitz (1993), he worked as a producer, co- writer, and assistant sound editor on films and television shows with one of his first jobs being a production assistant on the set of Pee Wee's Playhouse. My Friend Paul (1999), Jonathan's sophomore documentary for which he directed, wrote, and produced was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Slamdance Film Festival in 1999. His latest film, Calling All Earthlings (2018), won the Debut Feature Competition Jury Prize at the Illuminate Film Festival in 2018. Aside from his work in film production, he is a professor at Cal State San Marcos School of Arts and has taught courses on subjects like documentary filmmaking, media distribution, and both US and international cinema.Jonathan's documentary Commune, which is focused on the commune of Black Bear Ranch in the late 60s through the 70s, is celebrating its 20th anniversary by being screened in its newly restored form across the US. Three more screenings in California have been announced with the next in San Rafael on September 12, another in Los Angeles on September 17, and the last announced screening on September 20 in Ojai, California. More screenings are expected to be announced so follow @CommuneTheMovie on Instagram and Facebook to stay updated on the film and its upcoming screenings! This is Jonathan's first time on ATFT! I got connected to Jonathan thanks to Kelly Hargraves who presented me this excellent opportunity and then became a big help in setting the interview up. This episode was recorded on August 7, 2025. In this episode, Jonathan talks about his post- production process, specifically when it comes to trimming down hundreds of hours of footage to form a film, as well as his love for old noir and comedy films from the 1930s, and meeting Christopher Nolan. We also compared his film Commune to one of my favorite films: Easy Rider (1969)! All this and much more on the latest episode of All the Film Things! Background music created and used with permission by the Copyright Free Music - Background Music for Videos channel on YouTube.

Send us a textWelcome to Celebrate Creativity - Episode 431 - Yesterday and TomorrowI mentioned that it was necessary to have a list of name signs when signing a play by William Shakespeare in an earlier podcast episode.  And I want to say a final note about that here.  What I always did when interpreting a play at the black fires Playhouse, I printed a sheet on my computer with ready set go - I doubt that anybody remembers that - a page making program where I could have eight or 10 pictures of various cast members and the name sign that I had given to that character. Obviously there wouldn't be enough room to have name signs for all the characters, but I would definitely have name signs for say major characters like Romeo, Juliet, or Hamlet. I took about 10 minutes at the beginning of the play to introduce the name signs of the major characters, but found that you couldn't always depend on every member of the deaf audience to be there on time. So This was especially a big help for deaf people who might've come in late.  And I always printed enough to give a copy of the name signs to members of the cast - they always appreciated it and said they would put it in their scrapbook. I have found - no outstanding observation here - but it is always a good idea to stay on good terms with the cast and director.  I remember one time the director of a play was introducing me to a group - he said this is George Bartley - he is greatly beloved by our cast - I thought to myself, this is the first Time I have ever been called beloved - I've been called stubborn many many times - but never beloved.Thank you for experiencing Celebrate Creativity.

Today we discuss John Frankenheimer, a true expert of the craft and a man who could make any kind of film. Our B-Sides today include Prophecy, 52 Pick-Up, Dead Bang, and the HBO Film Against the Wall (for which Frankenheimer won an Emmy!) Our guest today is the great Blake Howard of One Heat Minute Productions. He's just wrapping up his podcast series Romin, in which Blake discusses Frankenheimer's late-period action masterpiece (and certified A-Side) Ronin with incredible film minds (and also two schlubs from The Film Stage). In this episode, I tell a fairly interesting first-hand story about original Ronin screenwriter J.D. Zeik! The superb interview book John Frankenheimer: A Conversation With Charles Champlin is referenced quite a bit throughout, as is this interview with Ben Affleck (which includes a funny memory of the temperamental Frankenheimer on the set of Reindeer Games). Frankenheimer's BMW Films short with Clive Owen comes up, as does underrated character actor Tim Reid. We admire the nastiness of 52 Pick-Up, the way that Against the Wall looks, and the ambitions of Prophecy, failed though they may be. Then there's Dead Bang, a deeply troubled production with a supremely strange William Forsythe performance. Additionally, Frankenheimer made his bones in live television, specifically being the lead director of Playhouse 90. One episode we talk about a bit is “Forbidden Area.”

Sonic Summerstock returns with the incredible Larry Groebe and Project Audio and a very special performance! "Sergeant Preston of the Yukon" (actually called "The Challenge of the Yukon" for most of its 16 years on the radio) was one of the greatest juvenile adventure radio series ever - part of a trinity of kids' shows that originated from Station WXYZ in Detroit. (The others were "The Green Hornet" and "The Lone Ranger".) It chronicled the never-ending adventure of the noble Mountie and his wonder dog Yukon King, maintaining law and order in the wilds of the frozen Northwest. While there are nearly 700 surviving recordings of this classic show, Project Audion located a MISSING episode's script that originally aired on May 25, 1955 -- just two weeks before show ended its run. What's more, we are delighted to feature 94-year-old Chuck Daugherty, who was actually heard in some of the original Preston series episodes during his time at WXYZ over 70 years ago.  He's part of a terrifically talented coast-to-coast cast for this exciting episode with original commercials for Quaker cereals.
