Pee-Wee As Himself is an HBO Max two-part documentary exploring the life and career of Paul Reubens, known for his character Pee-wee Herman. Directed by Matt Wolf, Pee-wee as Himself is constructed around over 40 hours of candid interviews with Reubens, conducted before his passing in 2023. The film delves into his early influences in circus and avant-garde theater, his meteoric rise with Pee-wee's Playhouse and Pee-wee's Big Adventure, and the deliberate separation he maintained between his personal identity and his Pee-wee persona. The documentary also addresses the controversies that impacted Reubens' career, including his 1991 arrest and the 2002 charges related to vintage erotica, which were later dropped. In a poignant final audio message recorded shortly before his death, Reubens reflects on the pain of being misunderstood and emphasizes the importance of self-acceptance and non-conformity—a message he consistently aimed to impart to his audience. Joining Kate is two-time Emmy and Grammy award-winning comedian Kathy Griffin, one of Paul Reubens good friends.

Few contemporary actors better represent the bravado and edginess of New York City natives than Natasha Lyonne. Over a four-decade career that began with a role on Pee-wee’s Playhouse, Lyonne has become known for portraying characters that are gruff but likable, hard-nosed but sympathetic. She’s exhibited these traits in films ranging from Everyone Says I Love You to American Pie; but her brashness truly hit the mainstream in 2013, upon the release of Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black. That show kicked off a run on television that has found her as the creator and star of recent hits such as Russian Doll and Poker Face, the latter of which just released its much-anticipated second season. On this week’s episode of Table for Two, the actress joins host Bruce Bozzi to discuss New Yorkers’ street smarts, why she loves Richard Pryor’s Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life Is Calling, and the genius of Maya Rudolph.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This Sunday evening on "Sunday Night Playhouse", Vintage Classic Radio brings you a rare sci-fi double bill from the archives of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Our first feature is a haunting adaptation from CBC Sunday Theatre in Calgary, H.G. Wells' story, "The Crystal Egg", originally aired on March 26. 1972. Long before he unleashed the Martian apocalypse in "The War of the Worlds", Wells hinted at interplanetary observation with his eerie tale of a London curiosity shop owner who stumbles upon a mysterious crystal orb -- one that reveals visions of life on Mars. As the elderly shopkeeper becomes obsessed with the glimpses he sees, the story draws us into questions of surveillance, alien life, and the limitations of human understanding. This compelling dramatization stars Henry Comer, was adapted by Leslie McFarlane, and brought to life under the direction of Fred Diehl.Next, we journey deeper into the cosmos with an atmospheric production from "The Mystery Theatre", one of CBC's most ambitious dramatic efforts, featuring weekly thrillers from across Canada. In this 1968 adaptation of Arthur C. Clarke's gripping short story "Breaking Strain", two astronauts aboard a space freighter bound for Venus face the ultimate moral dilemma when a catastrophic systems failure reveals there's only enough oxygen for one man to survive. What begins as a cool-headed conversation between professionals devolves into a chilling study of human instinct, fear and the ethical boundaries of survival. Crafted with the CBC's signature dramatic flair, the production underscores Clarke's mastery of psychological tension and philosophical depth in the face of technological isolation. Join us for this thought-provoking exploration of early science fiction storytelling from two literary giants, tonight on Vintage Classic Radio.

In the long lineup of fictional hard-boiled detectives, Philip Marlowe stands out as one of the earliest and best. Raymond Chandler's creation first reached print in the early 1930s, then went on to memorable adaptations in film, television, and of course radio. "The Adventures of Philip Marlowe" had a solid four-year run of well over 100 episodes on CBS. Still, a handful of recordings are lost today.  Now Project Audion recreates one of these missing episodes - "The Quiet Number" - directly from the original script, exactly seventy-five years after it was broadcast. "The Quiet Number" wasn't penned by Chandler, but we meet the son of the man who wrote this and most of Marlowe's other radio adventures. Then our transcontinental voice cast performs this gritty story of lost love in a hot Los Angeles summer via a live transcription that sounds just like 1949.
