This week's Deadpod takes us back to the Fall tour of 1979 - this time at San Diego for the Saturday night show that took place on November 24. This first set opens with a rare and refreshing 'China Cat>I Know You Rider'. Love hearing this as an opener and I think it sets a nice atmosphere for the show. Cowboy songs come next then a really nice 'Peggy-O' and 'Cassidy' which are both highlights of this set.  A youthful sounding Brent gives us a nice 'Easy To Love You' which goes into a longer 'Althea'. They close things with 'Passenger'.   Grateful Dead Golden Hall - San Diego Community Concourse San Diego, CA 11/24/1979 - Saturday One      China Cat Sunflower [6:08] > I Know You Rider [8:22]   Mama Tried [2:39] > Mexicali Blues [4:28] Peggy-O [6:58] Cassidy [4:51]   Easy To Love You [3:27] > Althea [7:59]   Passenger [5:04]  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod112224.mp3  Be sure and pick up the Deadpod early on Thanksgiving for our annual Thanksgiving special...

I think we have a good one to send you off on your Memorial Day weekend - this comes to us from May 30, 1980 at the Milwaukee Auditorium in Milwaukee Wisconsin.  The first set starts with a fine 'Jack Straw' - the first minute forty is supplied by an audience tape but hold on because the rest is a fine soundboard. The transition jams from Jack Straw to Franklin's Tower are off the chart.. Jerry is in fine form here.. as evidenced by the hot Uncle and Big River that follow...  They include a 'Passenger' here, without Donna of course, but still smokin'... then Brent does an early 'Easy to Love You'. They bring down the house with a set closing 'Music Never Stopped'.   Grateful Dead Milwaukee Auditorium Milwaukee, WI 5/30/1980 - Friday One     Jack Straw [5:29] > Franklin's Tower [11:15] Me And My Uncle [3:06] > Big River [6:11] Friend Of The Devil [8:36] Passenger [5:10] Easy To Love You [3:29] Althea [8:31] The Music Never Stopped [7:45]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod052424.mp3  I hope you have a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day.. take a moment to pause and remember what the holiday is for..

Hello Friends!  This week, a show that caught my fancy that for some reason has never been featured here on the Deadpod, but certainly deserves to be..  This comes to us from November 1, 1979 and teh Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale NY.  I think the band always enjoyed the NY area and this is I think, quite a fine and energetic outing.  This recording starts with an audience patch in 'Jack Straw' but don't let that put you off, its a fine soundboard recording with just a few patches thrown in. Brent and Jerry's interplay really shines on this show, and the band effortlessly shift gears here in the first set from rockers like 'New Minglewood Blues' to more soulful numbers like 'Candyman' and 'Peggy-O' (that latter is  an exceptionally fine version here). 'Looks Like Rain' shines too, and I quite enjoy the Brent offering 'Easy to Love You'..  Next week features a *massive* Scarlet>Fire, don't miss it!    Grateful Dead Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Uniondale, NY 11/1/79 - Thursday      One      Jack Straw [#2:21] ; They Love Each Other [7:12] ; Mama Tried [2:35] > Mexicali Blues [4:22] ; Peggy-O [7:38] ; New Minglewood Blues [6:55] ; Candyman [7:03] ; Looks Like Rain [8:25] ; Don't Ease Me In [3:36] ; Easy To Love You [3:50] ; The Promised Land [4:19]     You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod011020.mp3   Hope you stay warm and dry this weekend - looks like some of us are in for some weather!    thank you all for your kind support, which keeps the Deadpod rolling.

Here's a show that I attended and found to be quite magical at the time.. it is from December 1st, 1979 at the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh PA. A beautiful, small venue, the energy on this night was unmatched and I'm sure it comes through on this nice recording. The show starts with a smoking 'Jack Straw', which Jerry then takes into a long and beautiful 'Sugaree'. After this we know we're in for an evening of great jamming, and the boys don't let us down. 'Uncle>Big River', is even full of life, and 'Loser' always a favorite of mine, is perfect. Brent, still new on keyboards, sings a nice 'Easy to Love You'. Bobby's slide work in the 'Minglewood' that follows, could be better but a great 'Althea' saves the day and the band ends this first set with a wonderful 'Music Never Stopped'.. We'll hear set 2 next week...   Grateful Dead Stanley Theatre Pittsburgh, PA 12/1/79 - Saturday One     Jack Straw [5:36] > Sugaree [16:52] ; Me And My Uncle [2:53] > Big River [6:18] ; Loser [7:21] ; Easy To Love You [3:43] ; New Minglewood Blues [7:21] ; Althea [11:33] ; The Music Never Stopped [8:44]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod120619.mp3   Peace, health and happiness to all of you during this season.   thank you.

The band was on a roll not only during May of '77 but also during May of 1980 so I decided to bring you this smoker of a show from that month, 38 years ago. This one comes from Portland Maine on May 11th, 1980. This one gets up and roaring with a hot 'Alabama Getaway' into 'Promised Land'. Garcia's voice is great on 'They Love Each Other' which follows and throughout. The only flaw here for me is when Brent drops a verse on 'Easy To Love  You'. I'm always a fan of the 'Big Railroad blues' and the closing 'Don't Ease' into 'Music Never Stopped' is a fun way to close this first set..     Grateful Dead Cumberland County Civic Center Portland, ME 5/11/80 - Sunday One Alabama Getaway [4:33] > The Promised Land [4:13] ; They Love Each Other [6:57] ; Cassidy [4:50] ; Loser [7:22] ; It's All Over Now [8:20] ; Easy To Love You [3:30] ; Big Railroad Blues [4:36] ; Looks Like Rain [7:59] ; Don't Ease Me In [3:09] > The Music Never Stopped [7:26]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod061518.mp3   Thanks so much for your support of the Deadpod!   Hope those of you lucky enough to be out on tour with Dead  & Co. are having a fabulous time! This week - a show I really don't think I've broadcast before :) this one from my old hometown of Cleveland Ohio back on 11/29/79 at Public Hall. The boys always seemed to rock in the Land and this night was no exception as they started out with a great 'Alabama Getaway' into 'Promised Land'. Je4ry slows it down a bit with 'Candyman' but the 'Mexicali' is smokin'. A beautiful 'They Love Each Other' follows with some great leads from Jerry. Brent is stlll new in the chair but 'Easy To Love You' is great. 'Brown-Eyed Women' smokes and the boys close with 'Looks Like Rain' into a stompin' 'Don't Ease Me In'.. second set next week..      Grateful Dead Cleveland Public Auditorium Cleveland, OH 11/29/79 - Thursday One Alabama Getaway [6:17] > The Promised Land [4:12] ; Candyman [7:18] ; Mama Tried [2:33] > Mexicali Blues [4:23] ; They Love Each Other [7:10] ; New Minglewood Blues [7:16] ; Easy To Love You [3:44] ; Brown Eyed Women [5:31] ; Looks Like Rain [8:05] > Don't Ease Me In [4:26]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod120117.mp3   Many thanks to the kind friends whose support makes the Deadpod possible!    2018 is speeding down the track towards us..  "Might as well travel the elegant way.. They start with a trifecta that really takes off and was only done on two other occasions, the Mississippi Half-Step->Franklin's Tower->Minglewood. Personally I always enjoyed when Franklin's found its way into unusual combinations, and the Minglewood here is really rockin' as well. Other highlights in this fine first set include an excellent Althea, and an extended jam in the (unsual) set closing 'Feel Like a Stranger'. Next week's set 2 is at least equally as fine.       Grateful Dead Uptown Theatre Chicago, IL  8/19/80 - Tuesday One Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [9:54] -> Franklin's Tower [12:11]-> New Minglewood Blues [7:15] ; Dire Wolf [3:13] ; Cassidy [4:37] ; Row Jimmy [11:10] ; Me And My Uncle [3:07] -> Big River [5:53] ; Althea [8:26] ; Easy To Love You [3:48] ; Feel Like A Stranger [8:29]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod081117.mp3   Thanks so much for your kind support of the Deadpod!   pray for Peace

This week I decided to play a show that I have some fond memories of - July 6th, 1990 at Cardinal Stadium in Louisville KY. I have vivid memories of the trip to this show (following the blistering 4th of July show in Kansas) as well as walking through this group of fundamentalists on my way to the venue (they were all carrying brooms and Bibles to sweep out Satan I guess).. the weather was HOT and they cut off beer sales right when the boys went on stage.. but still a great night of music.. The first set has a wonderful Sugaree .. although really all of these 1st set songs are well played.. Its just a fine show from a great tour - the Summer of 1990. Grateful Dead  Date:  7/6/90 - Friday  Location:  Cardinal Stadium - Louisville, KY  Set One:Hell In A Bucket >  Sugaree ;  Easy To Love You ;  Peggy-O ;  Desolation Row ;  West L.A. This week's Deadpod is big in every way - a wonderful second set that features a fabulous Eyes of the World->Estimated Prophet->Franklin's Tower that lasts nearly an hour and is among the best versions ever of these songs. This comes to us from the great fall of 79 tour, this one is from November 5th, 1979 from the Spectrum in Philadelphia. The entire set is a real treat, starting with a rare second set opening Althea and closing with a truly rocking Sailor-Saint-Sugar Magnolia.. Grateful Dead The Spectrum Philadelphia, PA 11/5/79 - MondayAlthea [12:01] ; Easy To Love You [3:26] ; Eyes Of The World [22:35] > Estimated Prophet [14:28] > Franklin's Tower [13:45] > Space [5:09] > Drums [7:36] > Space [2:39] > Lost Sailor [6:52] > Saint Of Circumstance [5:14] > Sugar Magnolia [8:46]Encore Casey Jones [5:50]You can listen to this weeks' Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod092608.mp3Not only is there alot of great music this week, but I took to heart a suggestion that I try to improve the compression rate on the mp3. Being just another picky deadhead myself, I'm very concerned to have the music sound as good as possible - please let me know if you notice the difference on this week's Deadpod. This does increase the file size, and there are tradeoffs, but it may well be worth the cost. The other big news this week is that starting next week, KOPN, 89.5 FM, Community radio begins its Fall pledge drive. I'm trying to get a head start on this by asking you for your support for the Deadpod. I do hope you'll consider contributing to the Deadpod and ensuring our continuance. I wanted to let you know this was starting this week because I have an opportunity to send you a very special thank you for supporting the Deadpod - a copy of the brand new release "Rocking the Cradle - Egypt 78" CD/DVD combination set that releases on September 30th! This two cd/dvd set chronicles the historic shows in Egypt in 1978 - including 95 minutes of concert footage - and I'm so happy to be able to offer this to my listeners who contribute at a $60 level or above. I wanted to get a headstart on this as I'm going to be getting some surgery done later in October and would like to take care of this before all that goes down.. so at any rate, if you'd like to get a copy of this wonderful set, just contribute to the Deadpod during this big membership drive. You can click the 'Make a Donation' button on the left hand side of the page here: http://deadshow.blogspot.comThank YOU! Whew! I hope the Deadpod and all the news isn't TOO big! but then again, I always loved the BIG sound of seeing the Dead and I think you'll enjoy this week's show.. Be well and thanks for picking us up!
