Today we live in a cynical world. It's pervasive, this debilitating disbelief in our institutions, our once assured tenets of groundedness. Now we doubt, not only what we see, but what we hear, and even our own thoughts. Are they indeed our own? Or, have they been shaped by the unrelenting marketers and influencers? Back in the 80's - even earlier back in the 60's the attitudes of boredom and mistrust seemed exclusively the province of old school Europe, in particular the French, who invented the perfect word for it: Ennui. The great bon vivant, George Sanders, in his suicide note explained that he was leaving his life because he was bored. In the following offerings we celebrate a time when cynics could be appreciated as unique and exotic. CYNICAL GIRL by Marshall Crenshaw proclaims the lure of nihilism in a poppy, irresistible interpretation. And, THEM TERRIBLE BOOTS by the Orlons makes fun of a wannabe fashionista at the crossroads of burgeoning Mod style. MARSHALL CRENSHAWIn Marshall Crenshaw's 1982 eponymous debut album, CYNICAL GIRL chimed out so brightly it was a paused that refreshed. The singer wants a cynical girl who has no use for the real world, and this notion, wrapped in candy colored chords, invited us to embrace the “Debbie Downers” in our lives, and to realize there's something comforting in the dark side. Maybe we could save each other. Crenshaw, the latter-day, second coming of Buddy Holly even portrayed the Proto-Rock God in “La Bamba” and charmed the world with his unapologetic cheeriness. But the euphoria couldn't last. His debut outing achieved his highest chart position, but it was a bracing example of positivity while it lasted. THE ORLONSThis quartet of street-wise, Philly teens made the trsition from middlin' Doo-Wop practitioners to dance craze mega stars with their triple crown of chart toppers: Wah Watusi, Don't Hang Up, and South Street, evolving into one of Cameo-Parkway's hottest acts. THEM TERRIBLE BOOTS from 1962 was the B-side to South Street, and rode that comet's tail into recording history. It's an evocative glimpse into that time when the cultural landscape was in transition from the staid 50s to the super-charged 60s. The aforementioned cynicism is reflected in the mockery to which the dude who is wearing the mod clothes is subjected. But, he was just probably a bit ahead of his time. When the only male member, (and survivor) of the group, Stephen Caldwell, repeats the title phrase in his basso profundo, the whole salty world view clicks into place.

In episode 119, I catch up with Alexis Krauss and Derek Miller, the noise pop duo better known as Sleigh Bells. I have been a massive Sleigh Bells fan since their first few singles back in 2009 — brash, genre-defying bangers like “Crown on the Ground” and “Infinity Guitars” that sounded unlike anything else, combining elements of pop, metal, hardcore, hip-hop and punk. They've continued to blow my mind with the leaps they've made since then. The three of us are also old friends at this point, and though we've done shorter interviews in the past, it was great to finally get to ask them some of the classic LSQ podcast questions about all the shit they were into as kids. In this episode, Alexis talks about what she learned from her experience in a teen pop band, revelations she had at the punk and hardcore shows she frequented during her New Jersey youth, and learning to integrate the diverse parts of her musical voice. Derek describes falling in love with the soundtrack to La Bamba as a kid growing up in Florida, and then discovering 80s pop greats like Janet Jackson and Cyndi Lauper before venturing into alternative and hard rock (Nirvana, Silverchair) and then having his mind blown by ground-breaking artists such as Radiohead and Björk, and then eventually joining metal core band Poison The Well in his later teens. They also share the story of how they came together to form Sleigh Bells, and how their current approach builds on the foundational principles they established for the band more than fifteen years ago.Sleigh Bells' new sixth studio album, Bunky Becky Birthday Boy, comes out this week and it's stellar. Ritchie Valens and his flying podcast! - Phil takes 1987's La Bamba off the shelf this week as he remember the day the music died for the second time. Phil is so captivated by the performance of Esai Morales as Bob that it threatens to take the attention away from Lou Diamond Phillips. That being said, the movie is successful in taking a different approach to similar material as the 1979's The Buddy Holly Story (available in the archives) Dave found it challenging to get into the story overall as the characters were too thinly drawn to be understood without knowing the story previous. The performances and structure of the movie start to be a little melodramatic by the end. Phil, of course, is moved to tears.
Scott from Sunny Grove Brewing knows how to keep the brewhouse running, and that's to make sure Tessa has her favorite beer on tap ALL THE TIME! Los Lobos' 1990 album The Neighborhood showcases their signature blend of rock, blues, and Latin influences through the lense and ears of East Los Angeles. While it didn't achieve the commercial success of La Bamba, the album captures Los Lobos' musical versatility and deep-rooted cultural influences. The band shifts from Texas blues and roots rock to old school rock 'n roll and acoustic balladry with the ease of seasoned players, with lead singer/guitarist David Hidalgo guiding the band all the way. At times the reliance on traditional blues structures can stifle the endlessly creative band by locking them into particular styles and arrangements, whereas tracks written outside the format flourish thanks to the skilled band. Elsie Saldaña still gets nervous on stage, almost six decades after she first started performing as a drag king in the Central Valley. She's the country's oldest drag king, and her first performance was in 1965 at Red Robin, a gay bar in her hometown. She performed Ritchie Valens' “La Bamba” and was instantly hooked. Lou Diamond Phillips has an old-school, theater-based work ethic, which is why there's almost nothing he can't or won't do—from appearing on The Masked Singer to imitating the look of Buffalo Bill Cody for his newest film Get Fast, now available on VOD. He doesn't mind that people still talk to him about playing Ritchie Valens in La Bamba because he's (justly) proud of the film and his performance in it, as you will hear. Leonard and Jessie also have a personal connection to this gracious and talented man.
Comedian Josh Wolf returns to the show and they open by talking about how Election Day is too close to Thanksgiving, the burden of going to a college with a big sports program, whether or not you should tip a prostitute, the programming choices for Sirius XM's 1st Wave channel, and the perfect offensive to funny ratio when doing edgy jokes. Next, Jason “Mayhem” Miller reads the news including stories about Martha Stewart pushing away Drew Barrymore during touchy interview, the Kansas City homes of NFL stars Patrick Mahomes & Travis Kelce being burglarized, a YouTuber missing the fine print on the $39K home he bought on Amazon, and Betsy DeVos joining Trump's call to 'disband' the Department of Education. Then, actor Lou Diamond Phillips makes his first ACS appearance since 2013. They talk about Lou's new movie “Get Fast”, people trying to talk him out of a career in acting, how he's managed to work 40 years without any real lulls, being too brown for Brat Pack membership, and he recreates one of his famous lines from “Stand and Deliver.” For more with Josh Wolf: ● Listen to his podcast: ‘Hey Maaan with Josh & Jacob Wolf' ● TWITTER & INSTAGRAM: @joshwolfcomedy ● WEBSITE: http://comedianjoshwolf.com ● LIVE DATES: Bakersfield 11/14, Sacramento 11/15, Des Moines 11/22-23 For more with Lou Diamond Phillips: ● NEW FILM: Get Fast - available November 15th on VOD and Digital ● TWITTER/X: @LouDPhillips Thank you for supporting our sponsors: ● http://Hydrow.com and use code ADAM ● http://ShopMando.com, use code: ADAM ● http://OReillyAuto.com/Adam

Much has been made of Mexico's rich Spanish and indigenous heritage, but until recently there's been little talk of Mexico's so-called "Third Root": Africa. Africans came to Mexico with the Spanish as soldiers and slaves -- so many that by 1810, the black population of Mexico was equal to that of the United States. Today, African heritage persists throughout Mexico, yet for a variety of reasons, black history has long been silenced. In this Hip Deep episode, we use music to explore that history as we take a road trip across the country in search of sonic traces of Afro-Mexico. We visit the state of Veracruz to learn the history of the Afro-Mexican son jarocho sound, made famous by Ritchie Valens' 1958 hit cover of "La Bamba," a traditional jarocho tune. Then, we visit the Costa Chica of Guerrero, where Afro-Mexican communities are fighting for government recognition to help preserve faltering musical traditions. And we'll stop by the golden-age halls of Mexico City, where the Afro-Cuban danzón thrives far from its ancestral home in Havana. Along the way, we hear from top scholars in the field such as Ben Vinson III and Alejandro Madrid, as well as Afro-Mexican music stars past and present, from Los Cojolites to Las Cafeteras. ¡Que padre! Lou Diamond Phillips (La Bamba, Young Guns) joins us this week and shares his gratitude for being able to sustain a successful career in the arts for over 40 years, while highlighting the importance in open conversations about mental health along the peaks and valleys that come with it. Lou talks a lot about his experience in La Bamba - going from a day player to being Ritchie Valens, having just seven days to prepare the songs, and the biggest shock that came with his portrayal. We also talk about his pursuit for acting coming out of Texas, his hopes for a return to Young Guns, and the work ethic that propels him into so many different projects. Thank you to our sponsors:
One Shat host is a social justice warrior. The other hates Mel Brooks movies. So "Blazing Saddles" seemed doomed from the start. But there's magic in Gene Wilder, Cleavon Little and the old frontier. Listener Ed took Shat The Movies way back to 1974 for this satirical Western that Gene Lyons argues isn't racist, sexist or even remotely offensive (other than one particular performance). Dick Ebert was impressed with the "real Hollywood Western" feel of the movie, attributing the incredible cast and chemistry to divine intervention, and also the groundbreaking farts. In this episode, the Shat Boys discuss the connection between "Blazing Saddles" and "La Bamba," cheer for Slim Pickens and Harvey Korman and wonder at how cleverly the film breaks the fourth wall. You know those episodes where Gene gets excited and quotes the movie a lot? Yeah, it's one of those. A lot's changed since 1987: Biopics are much more common (and darker). Chicano artists are more mainstream, and Lou Diamond Phillips is a household name. So we acknowledge "La Bamba' was groundbreaking ... and not very good. Listener Mark C. commissioned this episode and the upcoming "American Me" to celebrate his heritage as a first-generation Hispanic-American. He noted the blockbuster soundtrack, janky lip-syncing and performances from Esai Morales, Joe Pantaliano and Elizabeth Pena. But Mark didn't prepare us for laughably large talismans, breakneck pacing and Ritchie Valens' "golly-gee" persona. In this episode, the Shat Crew debates whether Ritchie's brother, Bob, got a fair shake in the movie, what really happened that night in Tijuana and how much racism is appropriate for this story. Gene spots a Mystical Mexican. Ash yearns for some Buddy Holly, and Dick wants more details about the plane crash and aftermath.
