Tom Liden is our guest on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger. He is one of the organizers of the Mendocino County Fair Wine Competition. The 42nd annual edition was held two weeks ago at the Fairgrounds in Booneville and Dan Berger was one of the judges. Before they taste and describe the winning wines from the 2021 Mendocino County Fair Wine Competition, they have a bottle to taste from Dan Berger's extensive cellar. It's a 2016 Vintner's Reserve Kendall Jackson Chardonnay. It was not supposed to be for aging but it has held up very well and it is a lot more complex and tasty than it was a few years ago. Dan likes to put wine away to see what happens and about 20% of the time, the wine falls apart, but the well made ones get better and better. The Mendocino Winegrowers Inc, led by Executive Director Bernadette Byrne, produces the annual wine competition. Bernadette Byrne last appeared on California Wine Country in this episode, first heard on July 11, 2018. This is their 42nd year. There were 233 entries, and 43 double golds were awarded, also 36 golds and 103 silvers. Tom Liden is also a photographer and he has brought a book of his photos to the studio. He worked for a commercial photographer in New York and then moved “back to the land” in Ukiah in the mid ‘70s and opened a commercial photography studio. His business grew along with the wine industry. The book is called Mendocino Roots and Ridges. The text was written by Heidi Cusick Dickerson and Dan Berger remembers writing a good review of this book when it came out in 2012. Heidi had been doing weekly stories for the local press then the Mendocino County Museum published the book as a good promotional piece for the county and the wines. The Mendocino County Museum in Willits has copies available for purchase. He brought the Syrah, a Booneville Road 2018 Syrah from a small producer named Ed Donovan, which won the best of show red. It's called Broken Leg Vineyards because it's steep and the guy who planted the vineyard broke his leg in the process. The second bottle is a 2019 Jaxon Keyes Estate Grenache from the final flight. He has also brought a Gruner Veltliner 2020 Anderson Valley Navarro Vineyards. Dan Berger says that the minerality in the aftertaste is what makes this wine great. This varietal can be tricky to make and he says it is almost unheard of for a winemaker's first effort to be this good. Visit Bottle Barn in person or click the logo to visit them online for the best deals in wine country. Tom Liden tells about being a volunteer in the early days of the competition. It was the first wine competition that featured only wine from Mendocino County grapes. Last year was the first Michigan wine competition. There is also one in Idaho and the Sonoma County Harvest Festival is also locals only. Mendocino County is one of the areas at the forefront of organic farming, biodynamic farming and sustainability. Fetzer has been a leader in this area, for a long time. Dan Berger is an internationally known wine judge. After this most recent competition in Mendocino, he said, “This is the best flight of reds in the 30 years I've been coming to this competition.” Dan says 25 years ago, the wines may have tasted great but didn't represent anything. Now, an Anderson Valley Pinot Noir tastes like one and a Grenache tastes like a Grenache, etc. At the Mendocino County Fair in Booneville on Sept 17, 18 and 19, the double gold medal winners will be pouring their wines. They will be there one at a time, taking turns. The 2012 Best of Show awards are: Best of Show Sparkling: McFadden Farm Cuvée Brut, Potter Valley Charlie Barra Award, Best of Show White: Navarro Vineyards 2020 Edelzwicker, Anderson Valley Best of Show Rosé: Lula Cellars 2020 Rosé of Pinot Noir, Anderson Valley John Parducci Award, Best of Show Red: Thomas T. No applicants yet for Ukiah City Council seat

December 30, 2020 — The Ukiah City Council will be short one member as soon as Second District Supervisor-elect Maureen Mulheren leaves the council to take her seat on the Board of Supervisors next week. Earlier this month, the Council voted to fill her seat by appointment rather than special election. The council has replaced departing members by appointment at least since 1947, according to a document put together by City Clerk Kristine Lawler. In 2013, when Mari Rodin left, the council did call for a special election, but Steve Scalmanini was the only candidate, so the election was canceled and he was appointed instead. A special election would cost the city $30,000, since there are no other jurisdictions to share the check. The application for the current open position is due at noon on January 21st. It’s pretty extensive, asking would-be council members about the top three to five most important issues facing the city, how they would resolve a situation where their personal philosophy is at odds with what’s best for the city, and requesting that they weigh in on public safety, infrastructure, economic development, and quality of life, among other issues. The council meets on the first and third Wednesday of every month, and the meeting on the sixth has been cancelled, so it will be down one member for only one session. There is a special meeting on Thursday the 28th, where the council will review the applications, but no decision is required until 60 days after the official date of resignation, which is Monday, January 4. Of the seven candidates who ran in November, Doug Crane and Josefina Duenas won the two seats in contention. Jenny Kimbler, who came in third place, created a social media furor when she used her candidate Facebook page to call for extra-judicial shootings of protesters. A screenshot of the post, which was filled with obscenities, misspellings, and unconventional punctuation choices, appeared on MendoFever a month before the election. In a letter to the editor that ran in the MendoVoice last week, Kimbler thanked her supporters, who knew what was truly in her heart. “If we all agreed with one another all the time, no new solutions would emerge,” she wrote. She went on to say that the past few months have made her realize that she does not need to be on the City Council to make a difference for her community. Earlier this week, we reached out to Scalmanini and Brian Erickson, who were also on the ballot, but both of them were undecided as to whether or not they would apply for the open seat. Ed Donovan said he was not planning to apply. Ahead of the December 16 meeting where the council chose to appoint a fifth member, he and another community member wrote to the council recommending that they choose the remaining candidate, Cameron Ramos. In arguments to dissuade the council from choosing the third-place runner-up, Donovan quoted a few of the more pungent excerpts from Kimbler’s now infamous post, and another letter-writer said she trusts that anyone advocating violence will not be considered for the position. Ramos had not submitted an application when we checked last night, but earlier this week, he said he was planning to.

Tom McEwen, won the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) U.S. Nationals during part of his 45-year career. He is listed as number 16 of the 50 most significant drivers of NHRA’s first 50 years. He received the nickname "the Mongoose" in 1964 from engine builder Ed Donovan. It was largely originally used as a device to entice Don "the Snake" Prudhomme into a high-exposure match race. In 1965, he faced Hot Wheels teammate Don Prudhomme at the Hot Rod Magazine Championship Drag Races, held at Riverside Raceway, "one of the most significant drag racing events" of that era. McEwen won five NHRA national events, but his gift for gab and promotional ability made him one of the sport's most influential and controversial figures. As stated by Roland Leong,“McEwen was the smartest of the bunch. When he came up with the Hot Wheels deal using the Snake and Mongoose characters, it shook the world of drag racing big time. He produced a sponsorship package that allowed him and Prudhomme to buy the best equipment, pay expenses, make money and sell their image all over the United States. I hate to admit it but McEwen and Prudhomme showed us the way to the future. They were a lot smarter than most of us who didn't see past the end of the quarter-mile
