We began with Chef Anthony Bonett from @Moshulu, who's about to enter into his new role as the Chef at Triple Crown, located in the Radnor Hotel in Wayne, PA.  Chef Bonett has been working inside restaurants in Philadelphia for most of his career, landing a job with Fearless Restaurant's Marty Grims 15 years ago, and has worked for the family-owned business ever since. His career has long since focused on seafood-heavy cuisines where he offers creative meals to entice everyone's palates.  Today, he joined us while getting ready for the FR Restaurant Week, Easter Brunches, and his interesting twists on foods that we all love for the new Spring menu at Moshulu!  https://www.fearlessrestaurants.comhttps://www.fearlessrestaurants.com/moshuluhttps://www.triplecrownradnor.comNext, our host was joined by Keith Wallace who's name is synonymous with all things wine, including Founding a top-tier school for budding sommeliers and wine makers.  His career stemmed from working inside kitchens to wine making, from penning the book, "Corked & Forked" to contributing to different publications. As a person who looks for new and exciting ways to expand his career...he started a  program for sommeliers and winemakers at 31 years old which offers a wider accessibility for everyone to learn the industry.  His expertise and craft is finely-tuned so that he can ascertain what your taste in wine might be, and judge so accurately that his choices end up obtaining 90+ ratings from Wine Advocate and Wine Spectator.Wine School: https://www.vinology.comPodcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/after-wine-school/id1787586745Book: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/corked-forked-keith-wallace/1102622248Our final guest set her sights on business ownership within the culinary community early on, first trying her hand with interesting twists as a baker, then as a caterer, she started a ghost kitchen as well, and finally landed on her brand: Chubby Chicks.  Shakiera Turner, aka Chef Kiera has been turning up the levels on comfort food in the heart of Philadelphia. Dustin Minor and Nokesville Winery are a relatively new addition to the Norton scene in Virginia. His first full fledge vintage was 2021 when he made wine in the basement of his house after getting his winery license. Today he only produces a little over 1,000 cases of wine but from what I have tasted the quality is high and the future is bright for this new upcoming Vintner.Dustin started by planting several vines in his backyard in Nokesville because he thought they would look cool. That was over 12 years ago and eventually would lead to him planting the 5 acres of vines they have at their estate. He is a very determined and intense fellow and there is no doubt in my mind that he will succeed. The wines are worth checking out and adding to your Virginia wine tasting experience. Thanks for being a listener to the Fine Wine Confidential Podcast. In this week's episode, we're re-airing one of our top episodes with April Gargiulo, the Founder and CEO of Vintner's Daughter, a cult favorite nutrient-powered skincare brand. Vintner's Daughter was founded on the principles of unparalleled quality and efficacy, inspired by April's background in the world of fine winemaking and its uncompromising standards.Admittedly, she knew very little about the skincare industry when she first founded the brand in 2013, but one thing she knew well was how to extract the finest ingredients from plants. After suffering from cystic acne and hyperpigmentation her whole life, April discovered the products she was using were actually made from cheap synthetics, and it was then that she decided to create her own all-natural, multi-beneficial skincare. She launched the Vitner's Daughter brand with just one product: the Active Botanical Serum, which famously attracted the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, Naomi Watts, Hailey Bieber, and others who swear by its skin-clearing benefits. In our conversation, April offers some insight into the process of starting her business from her living room with absolutely no knowledge of the beauty industry and she explains how throwing out the rulebook allowed her to stand out in a highly saturated market. We also discuss how she grew into a multimillion-dollar business with only one product and zero investors, the power of meditation and staying true to yourself, and so much more! In this episode, we'll talk to April about:* Why April calls herself risk-averse and how she overcame it. [03:18]* How two entrepreneurial parents shaped April. [04:50]* Life before Vintner's Daughter: from design to winemaking. [05:56]* The story of the sabbatical April took, the apothecary she visited, and how it inspired her first product, the Active Botanical Serum. [12:37]* Other ideas April explored before launching Vintner's Daughter. [15:23]* The early days of product development and launch. [16:58]* Moments of doubt and the motivation to keep going. [19:58]* Growing brand awareness with minimal marketing funds. [23:33]* Scaling, running a business from her living room, working mom hours, and more! [25:20]* Committing to a single SKU over trends. [27:13]* Staying vision-aligned and impact-focused. [29:54]* Her approach to funding and building without investors. [32:02]* The value of a supportive advisory community. Kenward will draw from his book Reflections of a Vintner, which recounts the lessons learned, relationships forged and observations made from an insider's nearly 50-year journey through the burgeoning wine industry in Napa Valley. From the mid-seventies, when there were fewer than 50 wineries, to the present, with more than 800, Kenward shares his recollections as the region became a world-class wine destination. Kenward also has great stories about his friendships with legends of the modern American food and wine scene, including Julia Child, André Tchelistcheff, Andy Beckstoffer, and Robert Mondavi, among others. Kenward's hard work as a vintner was acknowledged and celebrated at the October 2021 Judgment of Napa, held 45 years after the historic Judgement of Paris. The TOR Cabernet was judged to be number one, outscoring legendary Bordeaux châteaux, Napa Valley, and international peers by leading critics and sommeliers. TOR wines, coveted by connoisseurs worldwide, received seven perfect 100-point ratings from leading critics for their 2018 Napa Valley wines. How does he do it? An iconic winemaker, Kenward has written, taught and lectured on wine most of his adult life. What he is most often asked about are not facts or numbers about his wines, but the stories behind them. These are stories of inspiration and wisdom that shaped his journey. With Kenward's impressive connection to Napa Valley and his legacy of creating inimitable wines, he has entertaining insights into an often intimidating and complex but highly enjoyable world.   This program is part of our Good Lit series, underwritten by the Bernard Osher Foundation. He created and produced, ‘The Cork Dorks'. The show was hosted with Adam and his good friend Jeremy West. It was the first of its kind. It began focusing on central coast wineries but as the show grew, so did their ability to travel and meet other winemakers they found everywhere from Napa to Bordeaux that adopted that same Central Coast quality of people willing to share their wines, and their stories. As the area grew, soon Adam's interview's covered everything from spirits, craft beer, cider, cuisine, hospitality, and more. Fast forward to today, the spirit and enthusiasm cultivated with the award winning show, is reborn as The Pour with Adam Montiel, this time independently, and unfettered by corporate authority leaving it even more free to share the journey of making wine more approachable and fun for everyone.  Here, We Taste It. To celebrate the 100th episode of the Chairish podcast, we reached out to four women who founded enterprises that have succeeded for a full decade. At a time when most new businesses fail, these women launched companies in highly competitive fields—fashion, beauty, interior design, and online sales—and not only survived but continue to thrive. When Rebecca Hessel Cohen founded her fashion line LoveShackFancy, she was told her feminine and flirtatious aesthetic would never sell. April Gargiulo of Vintner's Daughter upended the skincare business with a single product. Charlotte Lucas pursued her love of interior design despite setbacks and self-doubt. And Anna Brockway, co-founder and president of Chairish, was told by bankers and venture capitalists that her curated approach to an online marketplace would never succeed. Here they discuss how they managed to simultaneously grow their families and build their businesses, reveal the sexism they faced and the challenges they overcame, and tell how their passions helped them to persevere, even as the business world continued to change around them.
