(What ever, we don’t judge) Either way, you will enjoy this episode. Our guest today has had his hands in some animation favorites of our’s and your’s. Tyree Dillihay has helped bring us great cartoons such as Drawn Together: The Movie, El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera, The Venture Bros., & Bob’s Burgers. As an Animator & Animation Director, he brought multiple Emmy nods. As a Creative Consultant, he helped bring the 2019’s short film Hair Love an Academy Award. Ree’s current project is SN’EADS by REE, is sneaker heads comic. If you spend the night thinking about if you are wearing your Jordans or your Lebrons the next morning, this comic is for you. Where you can laugh at the dilemmas of being a sneaker head. He tells about his involvement in Hair Love and being brought on by producer Karen Rupert Toliver and Director Matthew A Cherry. Today’s episode is really special because we have Emmy Award winner Jorge Gutierrez with us.  Jorge is a Mexican animator, painter, writer and director who, along with his wife Sandra Equihua, created the multiple Annie and Emmy Award winning animated television series, El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera, for Nickelodeon. Born in Mexico City and raised in Tijuana, Jorge has completed various films, cartoons, illustrations and paintings exploring his love affair with Mexican pop and folk culture. With an unmistakable can-do attitude, Jorge shares how he views feedback as an opportunity to improve and how he has learned to put his ego aside during the alchemical process of working through and incorporating the suggestions of others. He explains what he finds challenging about working for someone else and why he is willing to play any part in the film production process to serve the greater vision. We also dive into the invaluable lessons he’s learned at art school, how his challenges as a Latino immigrant made him stronger and how fear has been a positive driving force in his life. Finally, Jorge reminds us about the importance of falling in love with the process instead of always focusing on the end result. So be sure to join us today for expert insight and a good laugh! Key Points From This Episode: What to expect from the upcoming Not Real Art Conference. Where Sourdough’s name comes from. The importance of putting your ego aside in your creative work. Synthesizing and distilling colleagues’ commentary on his writing. Why there’s no cheat sheet to writing. How he broke out of the boxes in the industry. The problem with art schools not always offering integrated classes. Why specializing is not necessarily the best option. The problem with many artists. Competing by outworking. The fall of 2D and the rise of CG animation. How schooling is no guarantee for work. The challenges of being a Latino immigrant. More about his father’s influence in his life. The role of family. Why Generation X is very pragmatic. Learning form failure and hard work. Focusing on the process, not the result. Jorge’s first solo art show. And much more!     Links Mentioned in Today’s Episode: Jorge Gutierrez — http://www.super-macho.com/ Jorge Gutierrez on Twitter — https://twitter.com/mexopolis Jorge Gutierrez on Instagram — https://www.instagram.com/mexopolis/?hl=en CalArts — https://calarts.edu/ Tim Burton — http://timburton.com/ Man One — http://www.manone.com/ Man One on Twitter — https://twitter.com/ManOneArt Scott “Sourdough” Power — https://www.instagram.com/sourdoughpower/ Not Real Art Conference — https://www.notrealartconference.com/ Not Real Art on Instagram — https://www.instagram.com/notrealartofficial/ Hueman — http://www.huemannature.com/ Logan Hicks — http://workhorsevisuals.com/new/

Director, writer and multitalented artist extraordinaire (Book of Life, El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera) Jorge r Gutierrez has pioneered his own path since graduating from art school. He stayed true to his roots and his passion, but was deemed "unhireable" by many American studios because his style is so unique. Jorge has had to create his own work ever since. Thankfully, he and his incredibly talented wife, Sandra Equihua, have been, and continue to be, successful. The School of Movies Archive

[School of Movies 2017] A little-seen animated film from 2014, produced by Guillermo del Toro, directed by Jorge Gutierrez, the man behind the award-winning show El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera. This is a celebration of mexican culture, centred around the Day of the Dead, and the Lands of the Remembered and the Forgotten, as much about life as it is about death, and dealing with ancient gods making wagers with one another over the actions of humans.  Masquerading as a cute, colourful, hyperactive, kid's movie, this in fact has more in common with the work of LAIKA, and slowly, over time, introduces more and more texture and personal touches from its creators who strove to make the art match their beautiful concept work.  A commission by Abel Savard, who encouraged us with his supporting of this episode to dig deeper and find something really rather wonderful.
