Sometimes love sitting in looks like bread and puffs and twists
This lyrical, stunning picture book tells a story about learning to love and celebrate your Asian-shaped eyes, in the spirit of Hair Love by Matthew A. Cherry, and is a celebration of diversity. A young Asian girl notices that her eyes look different from her peers'. They have big, round eyes and long lashes. She realizes that her eyes are like her mother's, her grandmother's, and her little sister's. They have eyes that kiss in the corners and glow like warm tea, crinkle into crescent moons, and are filled with stories of the past and hope for the future. Drawing from the strength of these powerful women in her life, she recognizes her own beauty and discovers a path to self-love and empowerment. This powerful, poetic picture book will resonate with readers of all ages. In February, love is in the air. . . and on the air, as we hear of books with different takes on love. Laurie Dreyer, manager of the (currently under renovation) Lansingburgh branch of Troy Public Library tells us of four kids books. "Eyes That Kiss in the Corners" (Joanna Ho, ill. Dung Ho, 2021) tells of an Asian girl who realizes that her eyes differ from her classmates but resemble her mother's and grandmother's, helping her love them and herself more. "Hair Love" (Matthew A. Cherry, ill. Vashti Harrison, 2019) shows a father loving his daughter by helping her arrange her hair in a natural style. "Worm Loves Worm" (J. J. Austrian, ill. Mike Curato, 2016) brings the most basic story of one being loving another being. And "Anzu the Great Kaiju" (Benson Shum, 2022) shows a kaiju -- a large creature similar to Mothra or Godzilla -- torn between wanting to honor his parents by destroying a city yet discovering he loves the little people too much to do so. For more details on these and other books, visit www.thetroylibrary.org. To find other libraries in New York State, see https://www.nysl.nysed.gov/libdev/libs/#Find. REDIFFUSION. Le court-métrage Hair Love, réalisé et écrit par Matthew A. In this episode of Hairstylist Rising with your host Jodie Brown as we dive into an innovative approach that's changing the game for hairstylists and salon owners - content days. Whether you're struggling to capture quality photos for your portfolio or looking to revamp your social media presence, Content days could be the solution you've been seeking. We're joined by Vivienne Johns from The Hairdressers Social Club, an industry expert and seasoned hairstylist, who walks us through the transformative power of blending "Share the Love" days with content creation. Key Takeaways: The Challenge of Salon Life: Vivienne and Jodie delve into the bustling world of salons, highlighting the difficulties hairstylists face when trying to capture stunning visuals of their work amidst the chaos. Enter Content Days: Discover how Vivienne introduces the concept of Content Days by merging the spirit of "Share the Love" days with creative content production. These days serve as a platform not only to showcase skills but also to facilitate learning among hairstylists. Share the Love Days: Originally designed for team training, "Share the Love" days are about sharing knowledge, techniques, and skills among the salon staff, fostering growth and unity. Simplifying Content Creation: Vivienne addresses the challenge of consistent content creation for social media by unveiling the effectiveness of Content Days. Instead of relying on sporadic in-salon captures, stylists can work with models who perfectly represent their desired client base. Models vs. Influencers: While influencer collaborations make waves, Vivienne emphasizes that collaborations need not exclusively involve high-profile influencers. Local influencers or individuals with significant community influence can yield remarkable results. Power of Micro-Influencers: Jodie and Vivienne discuss the prowess of micro-influencers, individuals whose localized influence can resonate more profoundly with potential clients compared to macro-influencers with massive followings. Styled Shoots for Stylists: Vivienne sheds light on the allure of styled shoots, a prevalent practice in the bridal industry. These collaborative efforts between photographers, stylists, and related businesses allow for the experimentation of creative looks and the creation of top-tier content. Crafting Brand Identity: Vivienne underscores that Content Days offer more than just visually appealing content. They play a pivotal role in constructing a salon's brand identity, ultimately attracting clients who align with the stylist's unique style. Empowerment Through Content Days: Content Days are a source of empowerment for both emerging and experienced stylists. Newcomers can use these occasions to build portfolios, while seasoned professionals can exhibit mastery in specific techniques. Balancing Client Experience: Jodie and Vivienne tackle the potential challenge of client experience during content creation. They highlight how Content Days provide a controlled environment for filming, allowing regular clients to enjoy a seamless experience. Win-Win Collaborations: Collaborations with local influencers or university students, as Jodie and Vivienne discuss, create mutually beneficial scenarios. These collaborations provide valuable content for the influencers' portfolios and high-quality material for the salon's marketing campaigns. Whether you're a salon owner or a freelance stylist, content days offer an exciting and effective approach to content creation that not only elevates your brand but also enriches the experience for your clients. Tune in to this episode and explore the strategic advantages of incorporating Content days into your hairstyling journey. Discover the art of enhancing your brand, showcasing your expertise, and attracting your desired clientele through this innovative concept. Say hi to Viv on Instagram

It was 8:20PM. I was just walking out of my kids room after reading them a story called Hair Love for the second time. I walked down stairs, made a cup of tea and opened my phone. It was an email. An email from someone who worked at LinkedIn. It turned out that someone at LinkedIn had caught some of my content online and was interested in learning more about whether or not I'd be interested in recording a course for their learning platform – LinkedIn Learning. A platform where millions of people around the world go to learn about topics like Salesforce, Public Speaking, Accounting, HR and so much more. In this episode, I share why I ultimately said yes as well as 3 principles that have fundamentally changed the way that I approach my content creation. Create content that shapes culture. Host Cathy Hannabach interviews Black visual studies scholar Jasmine Nichole Cobb about haptic blackness and the cultural politics of Black hair in US visual culture. Jasmine is a professor of African and African American studies and of art, art history, and visual studies at Duke University. Her recent book New Growth: The Art and Texture of Black Hair traces the history of Black hair in visual culture across documentary films, portrait photography, advertising, sculpture, and television. In the episode, Jasmine shares how haptics—or the mixing of touch and vision—has been central to how blackness has been lived, represented, and imagined across historical periods. Jasmine and Cathy also discuss why the 1990s and early 2000s were such a rich period for independent documentaries about Black women's hair in particular and how more recent series like The Hair Tales and Hair Love adapt this genealogy to our contemporary moment. Finally, they close out the episode with Jasmine's vision for a haptic Black futurity centering Black embodiment and freedom.
