We examine whether culture has actually become decentralized or if we just live in isolated "slivers" while still being shaped by the same underlying systems. Starting with observations about feeling "out of touch" we explore how everyone now consumes completely different content yet we can still connect meaningfully with friends over shared experiences. This raises questions about what really drives human connection and whether platforms like YouTube and social media create genuine cultural diversity or just the appearance of choice. The conversation shifts to fundamental tensions in how we structure our lives - particularly the conflict between work demands and what actually matters. We discuss the absurdity of modern situations where parents have to pay strangers to watch their children so they can focus on work, whether for survival or self-expression. This connects to the loss of extended family and community support systems that historically made work and family life compatible. We question whether our current approach to work, culture, and family serves human needs or just perpetuates systems that benefit markets rather than people. -Ai If you enjoyed this episode, please consider giving us a rating and/or a review. Health Hacks With Mark L White

What if your doctor has been giving you all the wrong advice about aging, fitness, and longevity? In this eye-opening episode of Health Hacks with Mark L. White, world-renowned athlete and longevity advocate Brad Kearns (former top pro triathlete and author of "Born to Walk") joins the show for a candid conversation on how to actually stay young, fit, and injury-free into your 50s, 60s, and beyond. Prepare for some surprising truths: the "10,000 steps" rule is a marketing myth, focusing just on cardio might actually hold you back, and your pre-workout routine could be the most important training you'll ever do. Key Highlights: Rewriting Athletic Aging: Brad reveals how he successfully transitioned from a world-class endurance triathlete (destroying his body in his 20s) to a thriving masters high jumper and sprinter in his 60s—without chronic pain. Advice For Your Younger (and Older) Self: Why training for your "80-year-old self" beats short-term goals, and the ONE thing most athletes regret. Mobility Over Mileage: The critical role of strength, power, and especially balance in preventing falls—the #1 cause of serious health decline after 65. The Truth About Steps: The hilarious origins of the "10,000 steps" rule, and what research really shows about daily movement and brain health. Nutrition, Social Life & Sleep: Why animal protein and fruit should be your dietary cornerstones, how a bad relationship is worse than smoking for your lifespan, and why your phone is sabotaging your mornings. Put These Lessons Into Action: Start a Simple Morning Mobility Routine: Before reaching for your phone, spend even 5 minutes on basic movements or stretches to build resilience for years to come. Prioritize Strength and Balance Work: Add short, frequent resistance training—even just using stretch bands or stair sprints at home—to protect against injury and falls. Clean Up Your Nutrition: Shift focus to whole foods—think animal-based proteins and fruit—and ditch highly processed snacks for lasting energy and health. Reconnect Socially: Remember, a strong community and healthy relationships add as many years to your life as any fitness regimen. Respect Your Age, Strategically: "60 is the new 60"—don't ignore what your body is telling you; train smarter, not just harder. Follow-Up Challenges: Try a 1-Leg Balance Test: Can you balance 10+ seconds per leg? Practice daily and track your progress. Audit Your Pantry: Toss at least 3 processed foods this week. Technology Fast: Delay checking your phone in the morning until after you move. Don't miss this inspiring, practical episode if you want to break free from aging stereotypes and claim your strongest, healthiest years—no matter your age! Life today is safer and more comfortable than ever before, so why do so many people feel unhappy, lonely, and anxious? Forrest talks with evolutionary psychologist Dr. William von Hippel about this paradox in light of our two core needs: autonomy and connection. He argues that modern life has pushed us too far in the direction of autonomy, and that we need to reclaim connection in order to find happiness.  They discuss how our evolutionary past shaped our needs for autonomy and connection, the tension between them, and why social connection matters so much for our well-being. They also touch on gender and cultural differences, common misunderstandings about evolutionary psychology, and what people can do to create more balanced and connected lives today. About our Guest: Dr. William von Hippel is an evolutionary psychologist and former professor at the University of Queensland. When you're feeling stressed, burnt out, and anxious — when you're striving and achieving but still finding yourself persistently dissatisfied with life — you might start looking for answers beyond what's offered by contemporary self-help.One ancient philosophy that can cast light on the sources of and solutions to our seemingly modern dilemmas is Buddhism. If you've ever been intrigued by Buddhism but admittedly only have a vague sense of what it's all about, Brendan Barca — co-author of The Daily Buddhist: 366 Days of Mindful Living — will walk you through its foundational principles. We begin our conversation with how Buddhism is similar to and different from other ancient philosophies like Stoicism, and Brendan offers an accessible introduction to the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. In the second half of our conversation, we explore how Buddhist principles and practices can be applied to our everyday modern lives and help you deal with the anxiety created by living in an impermanent world, shift your perspective on daily challenges, and cultivate greater compassion and patience. We discuss different meditation methods, the real purpose of meditation, and how to get started with it as a beginner. Most scholars are both haunted, even undone, by the task of writing papers for peers and traveling to strange campuses to deliver them. Yet we keep it up--we inflict it on our peers, we inflict it on ourselves. Why? To answer that question, Recall This Book assembled three (if you count John) scholars of Victorian literature asked to speak at the Spring 2025 Northeastern Victorian Studies Association conference. Their discussion began with the idea that agreeing to give papers is an act of “externalized self-promising” and ranged across the reasons that floating ideas before our peers is terrifying, exhilarating and ultimately necessary.   Kristin Mahoney's books include Literature and the Politics of Post-Victorian Decadence (Cambridge UP, 2015) and Queer Kinship After Wilde: Transnational Decadence and the Family. Nasser Mufti 's first scholarly book was Civilizing War and he is currently working on a monograph about what Britain's nineteenth century looks like from the perspective of such anti-colonial thinkers as C.L.R. James and Eric Williams. RTB listeners don't need to hear about John or his Arendt obsession.   Mentioned in the episode Theosophical Society in Chennai Annie Besant Jiddu Krishnamurthi in his early life was a not-quite-orphan child guru for Besant.  Eric Williams, British Historians and the West Indies on grand theorizations of race by folks like Acton C L R James Adorno's Minima Moralia provides Nasser with an importantreminder of the importance of “hating tradition properly.” H G Wells, The Time Machine and its modernist aftermath eg in the opening pages of Proust's Remembrance of Things Past and in Ford Madox Ford's The Inheritors and The Good Soldier, which is in its own peculiar way a time-travel novel.  The three discuss Foucault's notion of capillarity a form of productive constraint, which Nasser uses to characterize both early 20th century Orientalism, and the paradigms of postcolonialism that replaced it,  Paul Saint Amour's chapter on Ford Madox Ford is in Tense Future. John Guillory on the distinctions between criticism and scholarship in Professing Criticism; the rhizomatic appeal of B-Side Books. The “hedgehog and the fox” as a distinction comes from a poem by Archilochus—and sparked  Isaiah Berlin's celebrated essay of the same name. Pamela Fletcher the Victorian Painting of Modern Life . Viktor Frankl once wrote, “Those who cannot find a deep sense of meaning distract themselves with pleasure.” It's a quote that resonates deeply within the Stoic tradition. The Stoics, much like Frankl, warned against the unmoderated pursuit of indulgence. Pleasure, entertainment, materialism—these things are not inherently wrong, but when used to fill a void of meaning, they become distractions. And distractions, by their nature, pull us away from our true purpose.Yet, there's an intriguing inversion of this quote—one that opens the door to deeper reflection. Chris Williamson, host of Modern Wisdom, proposed it: “Those who cannot find a deep sense of pleasure distract themselves with meaning.” At first glance, this seems to oppose Stoic thought. But when we dig deeper, we find that it holds an important truth for those of us on the path of self-improvement.This podcast is listener-supported; if you would like to support the Strong Stoic (as well as gain access to exclusive content), you can do so on Patreon or Substack:Patreon: www.patreon.com/brandontumblinSubstack: https://strongstoic.substack.com

He skillfully adapts his message, whether in business consulting or empowering men to embrace their authenticity and greatness. This conversation underscores the critical role of accountability and the importance of building a robust support system on the path to success. Cody and Tony venture into the realm of masculinity, employing the metaphor of cars and engines to dissect societal expectations that often trap men in cycles of emotional breakdowns. They discuss the liberation found in vulnerability and authenticity, shedding light on the pressures of portraying perpetual success and the childhood roots of such burdens. Together, they explore the cultural shift towards disposability, contrasting it with the resourcefulness of previous generations who thrived on hands-on skills and hard work. These reflections serve as a reminder to maintain a balance between modern conveniences and traditional craftsmanship. Something for nothingDo rewards and incentives damage our humanity? In much of our personal and professional lives, we receive rewards for good behaviour and carrying out our responsibilities. But, evidence now suggests there are risks to this approach. Studies show rewards can damage wellbeing, fostering dependence and undermining our own sense of control. And neuroscientists have shown those more prone to seeking reward have a 70% higher risk of addiction, with addictive behaviour now present in almost half of the U.S. population. So, should we move away from rewards-based systems, and instead learn to value doing the right thing simply for the sake of, well, doing the right thing?Paul Bloom is a Canadian-American psychologist, bestselling author, and celebrated speaker. Bloom has written widely on human nature, and he won the Klaus J. Jacobs Research Prize for his investigations into how children develop a sense of morality.Dan Ariely is a Professor of Psychology and Behavioural Economics at Duke University and best-selling author. Ariely is a scholar of irrationality and decision-making, explaining how we repeatedly and predictably make the wrong decisions in many aspects of our lives.Nancy Sherman is a Professor of Philosophy at Georgetown University who has conducted research in general ethics, moral psychology, and the history of philosophy with focus on the Stoic tradition. Too Many Options? The Real History of Freedom and Choice with Sophia Rosenfeld The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Interview Series QUOTE:    "Our choices shape our identity—but not everyone gets the same menu." – Sophia Rosenfeld ⚖️ Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Interview Series. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and today, we're asking a question that touches every part of our lives—one that feels especially relevant to those of us 50 and older, navigating life's later chapters with purpose, curiosity, and maybe... a little decision fatigue. What if the very thing we've been told defines our freedom—our ability to choose—is actually overwhelming us? Our guest today, renowned historian Smithsonian Associate Sophia Rosenfeld, asks that very question in her brilliant new book available at Apple Books, The Age of Choice: A History of Freedom in Modern Life. Smithsonian Assocaite Sophia Rosenfeld will be appearing at Smithsonian Associates coming up. Please check out our show notes for more details on her presentation titled: A History of Freedom in Modern Life: The Age of Choice. But we have Sophia Rosenfeld today who'll tell us that from grocery aisles to voting booths, from personal belief to political identity, Rosenfeld takes us on a riveting tour of how we came to equate picking from a menu with liberty itself—and what that belief has cost us. This is no abstract academic exercise. For those of us who've lived through decades of cultural shifts—from the rise of consumer culture to the women's movement to the explosion of digital options—this story feels personal. Why does having more choices so often lead to more anxiety, not more joy? What happens when freedom starts to feel like pressure? Smithsonian Associate Sophia Rosenfeld, chair of the history department at the University of Pennsylvania, brings rich detail, warmth, and sharp insight to this conversation. We'll talk about dance cards and department stores, ballots and beliefs, and how something as simple as choosing your lunch became a reflection of who you are. So, whether you're rethinking your next big decision—or just what kind of toothpaste to buy—this is a conversation you won't want to miss. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is The Not Old Better Show. Let's get into it. In a time when everyday life feels saturated with decisions—what to buy, how to vote, who to trust—The Age of Choice reminds us that more options don't always mean more freedom. Sophia Rosenfeld's powerful insight reframes modern liberty, challenging us to rethink how choice shapes our lives, values, and collective future. That's it for today's conversation—fascinating, right? My thanks to  Smithsonian Assocaite Sophia Rosenfeld who will be appearing at Smithsonian Associates coming up. Please check out our show notes for more details on her presentation titled: A History of Freedom in Modern Life: The Age of Choice. Smithsonian Associate Sophia Rosenfeld has taken us from 18th-century shopping stalls to modern-day ballots and browsers, showing us that freedom isn't just about choosing... it's about understanding why we choose, how we choose, and who shapes the options we're given. For those of us over 50, this episode hits home. We've lived through eras where choice expanded dramatically—and now, we're often the ones making the biggest decisions of our lives: retirement, caregiving, health, even where to call home. Rosenfeld's insight is a powerful reminder that freedom isn't about endless options—it's about meaningful ones. You can listen to this episode and so many more at NotOld-Better.com, where our entire archive is available for streaming anytime. Follow us on social media—we're on Twitter at @notoldbetter and Instagram at notoldbetter—and let us know how you define freedom in a world full of choices. This is a production of N.O.B.S. Studios, and I'm your host, Paul Vogelzang. Thanks for spending time with us today, and please—join me again next time.
