For many of us, daily life is defined by a near-constant stream of decisions, from what to buy on Amazon to what to watch on Netflix. On this episode of Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz consider how we came to see endless selection as a fundamental right. The hosts discuss “The Age of Choice,” a book by the historian Sophia Rosenfeld, which traces how our fixation with the freedom to choose has evolved over the centuries. Today, an abundance of choice in one sphere often masks a lack of choice in others—and, with so much focus on individual rather than collective decision-making, the glut of options can contribute to a profound sense of alienation. “When all you do is choose, choose, choose, what you do is end up by yourself,” Cunningham says. “Putting yourself with people seems to be one of the salves.”This episode originally aired on March 13, 2025. This episode explores why modern life is quietly making us less social — and why even tiny moments of connection can dramatically improve happiness, relationships, and confidence. AJ and Johnny sit down with University of Chicago professor Nick Epley to unpack the psychology behind loneliness, introversion myths, social anxiety, communication, and why people consistently underestimate how much others want to connect with them. They also discuss how technology trains us to avoid uncertainty, why your voice matters more than text, and how honesty and asking for help actually strengthen relationships instead of weakening them. Release the Past: Craig Meriwether on Hypnotherapy, Anxiety, the Subconscious Mind, and Taking Back Control | Conversations with a Chiropractor Episode Description In this episode of Conversations with a Chiropractor, Dr. Stephanie Wautier sits down with Craig Meriwether, a clinical hypnotherapist and subconscious transformation specialist, for a grounded conversation about anxiety, old emotional patterns, test stress, and the role the subconscious mind can play in healing and personal change. Craig shares how his own struggles with depression and anxiety eventually led him into hypnotherapy, and he helps clear up some of the biggest misconceptions around the practice. This is not stage-show hypnosis or mind control. It is a conversation about the patterns people carry, the protective habits the mind can create, and what it can look like to begin changing those instructions from the inside out. Stephanie and Craig also talk about the anxiety many people are living with today, from teenagers navigating social media pressure to adults facing tests, interviews, public speaking, fear of flying, self-sabotage, and feelings of low self-worth. This episode is a helpful starting point for anyone curious about hypnotherapy, the subconscious mind, and the possibility of responding to life with more calm, clarity, and control. In This Episode, Discover Craig's personal journey through depression, anxiety, and personal development Why hypnotherapy became part of his own healing process How today's teenagers face a very different anxiety landscape than previous generations Why social media can make it harder for young people to find quiet, privacy, and relief How test anxiety affects students, adults, professionals, and people taking certification exams Why stress and shallow breathing can interfere with clear thinking during a test What hypnotherapy is, and what it is not Why hypnosis is not mind control or brainwashing How everyday moments of zoning out or daydreaming can resemble a hypnotic state The difference between the conscious mind and the subconscious mind How old emotional patterns can become automatic responses Why the subconscious mind may treat old pain as present danger How hypnotherapy can work with feeling states without searching for false or forced memories Why changing subconscious "instructions" can help people respond differently in the present Stay Connected & Explore Learn More About Craig Meriwether: Craig Meriwether: https://craigmeriwether.com/ Release the Past: https://releasethepast.com/ Ace Any Test: https://aceanytest.com/ Connect with Conversations with a Chiropractor: Follow Us on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/@ConversationswithaChiro Follow Dr. Stephanie on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/wautierwellness Email for show-related inquiries and sponsorships: drstephaniewautier@yahoo.com Want to be a guest on Conversations with a Chiropractor? Join the Conversation at 303-477-5600 or text to 307-200-8222 Monday - Friday from 3 pm - 6 pm MT. https://RushToReason.com HOUR 1 Fear, Health Risks, And The Hidden Toxins Shaping Modern Life. Hour 1 of Rush To Reason takes listeners deep into some of the most controversial and unsettling health conversations happening today. John Rush is joined by Dr. Kelly Victory and Steve House for a fast-moving discussion that begins with growing fears about Hantavirus, media-driven panic, and questions about whether another public fear campaign is unfolding. But the conversation quickly expands into something much larger. Are Americans becoming sicker because of modern lifestyles, toxic food systems, environmental exposure, or something even deeper? The hour tackles everything from vaccine-related heart concerns and rising atrial fibrillation cases to alarming increases in colorectal cancer among younger adults. Listeners hear discussions about routine screenings, elevated iron levels, preventive care, GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, microplastics, processed foods, and why so many people feel trapped in a healthcare system driven by fear and uncertainty. Along the way, John shares reflections about his father's cancer battle and his own exposure to chemicals in the automotive industry. HOUR 2 Colorado Politics, Campaign Chaos, And The Cultural Divide Nobody Wants To Admit Exists. Hour 2 takes a sharp turn into Colorado politics, Republican infighting, election strategy, and the growing disconnect between political reality and political ego. John spends much of the hour dissecting ballot access rules, the SAVE Act, mail-in voting, and why he believes Greg Lopez remaining in the governor's race could damage Republican chances statewide. Along the way, John challenges candidates who avoid tough interviews and explains why he refuses to play the role of a “fanboy” host for any politician. The conversation then pivots into gun rights, Phil Weiser, and Colorado's controversial large-capacity magazine restrictions, with John arguing the laws are ineffective and politically motivated. Later, an odd Florida influencer story launches a broader cultural conversation about “looks-maxing,” self-image, professionalism, grooming, and whether Americans have lost pride in personal presentation altogether. HOUR 3 Government Control, Crime, Taxes, Surveillance, And The Growing Fight Over Freedom. Hour 3 dives into some of the biggest debates shaping America right now—from gun rights and immigration enforcement to automated surveillance, rising taxes, and government overreach. John and Jerzee Joe open the hour by dismantling Colorado's high-capacity magazine laws, arguing the restrictions are nearly impossible to enforce when neighboring states and online retailers remain easily accessible. The conversation broadens into media coverage of violent crime, Chicago homicide statistics, immigration-related plea deal controversies in Virginia, and concerns about prosecutors allegedly prioritizing politics over equal justice. The hour intensifies further as Joe breaks down New York City's proposed “tax the rich” policies targeting billionaire Ken Griffin, sparking a larger conversation about businesses fleeing high-tax states and shrinking downtown economies. Later, listeners debate speed cameras, red-light cameras, toll-lane violations, and what many callers describe as government-run revenue traps disguised as public-safety programs. In this episode of Practical Shamanism, I explore a different kind of pep talk: one rooted not in false confidence or forcing yourself forward, but in remembering the strength, luck, resilience, and resourcefulness woven into your body through your ancestral line. Every one of us comes from an unbroken line of people who survived. They lived through hunger, illness, war, uncertainty, difficult births, harsh environments, bad odds, and all manner of human complexity. Not perfectly. Not always elegantly. But well enough for life to continue through them, generation after generation. That legacy lives in you. This episode is an invitation to breathe into the strength of your ancestral inheritance without dismissing the real challenges of modern life. Yes, being human is complicated. Yes, our instincts can sometimes pull us toward choices that are not especially kind to future us. And yes, modern life brings its own forms of stress, decision fatigue, disconnection, and overwhelm. But beneath that, there is also something steady: the deep biological and spiritual truth that you come from people who found a way. We'll explore how to connect with that legacy as a source of grounded encouragement, how to give your brain the "essay assignment" of showing you where you have already been resilient and resourceful, and how to let your ancestors stand behind you as allies in moving forward with more steadiness, discernment, and grace. We'd love to hear from you, send us a text about your favorite show!If you've ever picked up on something heavy about a person or situation — a warning, a sense of dread, a warning dream — and wondered if opening up more might bring forward more messages like this, you'll want to tune in.So many people in the early stages of developing their intuitive gifts notice that the heavy stuff seems to come through loudest. Maybe you sense something is off about someone before you can explain why. Maybe you are having cautionary dreams that leave you feeling stressed in the morning. Maybe every time you try to tune in, one of the first things that comes through is a warning. It doesn't happen to everyone, but for those that it does happen to, it sometimes stops their development in its tracks for fear that it might end up causing more stress. When you understand why it happens ~ you'll feel a lot of relief. With some tweaking, you aren't destined to be a doom and gloom, fear-based reader or intuitive. Have you noticed how the more we're connected by the internet and have all these gadgets, the lonelier we get? The things we thought would bring us together are actually making us more isolated than ever. That is the conversation I had with Dr. Laurie Santos. She is a Yale professor, an expert on happiness, and the woman behind Psychology and the Good Life, the most popular class Yale has ever offered. She also hosts her own hit podcast, The Happiness Lab, focused on the science of feeling good. In this episode, Dr. Laurie breaks down why English-speaking countries are quietly getting unhappier, why manifesting the reward actually makes you less likely to chase it, and why the expert on gratitude herself doesn't love gratitude journaling. She explains the neuroscience of wanting versus liking, why self-care has quietly become self-indulgence, and the mindset shifts that matter more than any routine, supplement, or practice on the internet. She also gets into why doomscrolling is stealing more from you than your time, the two parts of happiness you actually need both of, and the simple habits the research supports when every trendy protocol around you does not. If you have been doing everything you are supposed to do and still feel off, this episode might confirm something you've known about yourself and your happiness for a long time. What's Discussed: (01:30) How Dr. Laurie ended up at Yale teaching the most popular class in the school's history. (04:15) Why happiness is a skill you practice, not a personality trait you are born with. (07:40) The two kinds of happiness most people confuse and why you need both. (11:05) Why money past a certain number stops making you any happier. (14:30) The science behind why paraplegics and lottery winners end up at the same happiness baseline. (18:20) Why comparison is the single biggest thief of happiness in modern life. (22:10) Why the silver medalist looks more miserable than the bronze medalist. (26:45) Why non-English speakers are happier according to studies. (31:20) The dopamine trap of social media and why you crave what you don't even like. (35:50) Why your phone is the Nutrasweet of real connection. (40:15) Why boredom is the skill modern kids are losing and why it matters. (44:30) The shock study that reveals how uncomfortable we have become with our own thoughts. (49:10) Why the gratitude expert herself doesn't vibe with gratitude journaling. (52:40) Dr. Laurie's alternative to gratitude that actually sticks. (57:05) Why self-compassion beats self-criticism for every single goal you have. (1:01:30) Why self-care is not a bubble bath and what it actually looks like. (1:06:15) The research that shows manifestation is making you less likely to get what you want. (1:10:40) The WOOP framework and why it is the version of manifesting that actually works. (1:15:20) Why work-life balance is the wrong goal and what to aim for instead. (1:19:45) What Dr. Laurie tells her students to do in just ten minutes a day to feel happier. Hello, beautiful souls! Welcome back to the Angels & Awakening Podcast. I'm your host and author, Julie Jancis. Friends, Thomas Moore is back — and I have to tell you, I have been reading his books since I was 14 years old. Literally took them to the pool every summer. They are beat up and sun-faded and I treasure every single one. Thomas has written over 30 books on soul, beauty, and the art of living — and his newest, The Cure at Walden Pond, is a love letter to Henry David Thoreau and what his life at the pond still has to teach us today. This conversation was everything. In This Episode [00:14] Why Thomas fell in love with Thoreau — and how he discovered he wasn't just a naturalist [06:09] How Thoreau felt lost, built a tiny house by the pond, and found his cure [08:26] Julie opens up about her own season of restlessness — achieving everything and still feeling misaligned [10:42] "Every life needs a broad margin around it" — what Thoreau learned from doing nothing in the mornings [13:06] What Thomas's own days look like — a creative household of a writer, a painter, and a musician [17:32] AI, humanity, and what the Native Americans would have done before going to the moon [29:00] Why Thoreau wasn't a minimalist — the real meaning of simplicity as crystallization of the self [36:19] Following the wind: Thomas entering a monastery at 13, leaving at 26, and always staying available for what's next [38:00] Thomas's personal angel experience — a cement truck, a traffic circle, and what he believes saved him [41:04] Why the Irish confuse birds with angels — and the old monastic story that explains it [48:31] "Inorganic and lumpish" — reading Thoreau's words live and what they mean for us today [52:00] Beauty as soul nourishment — and the painter who said "whenever science makes a new invention, I will paint an angel" Connect with Thomas Moore
Loneliness isn't just a "feeling"—it’s a structural crisis. In this episode of Thinking Christian, Dr. James Spencer and Dr. Ben Mathew take a hard look at the "Epidemic of Loneliness" and why our modern way of life is practically designed to keep us isolated. Building on the "Embodied Leg" of our mental health stool, we explore how the transition from a "physical" world to a "convenience" world has stripped away the natural friction that used to bring us together. It’s time to move past the "on-demand" lifestyle and rediscover why being a member of the Body of Christ requires more than just a Wi-Fi connection. In this episode, we discuss: The Surgeon General’s Warning: Why loneliness is now considered a greater public health threat than many physiological diseases. The "Convenience" Trap: How Amazon, Netflix, and DoorDash have unintentionally removed the "small talk" and community interactions that ground our sanity. Structural Loneliness: Understanding that we haven’t just become lonely; we’ve built a society that makes it the default setting. The Church as a "Third Space": Why the local church is the essential alternative to the isolation of the home and the transactional nature of the workplace. Ancient Truths for Modern Deficiencies: Moving beyond the "search for relief" and leaning into the grit of real-world relationships. If you’ve ever felt "lonely in a crowded room" or wondered why life feels increasingly disconnected, this conversation offers a roadmap back to the communal life we were created for. Modern life keeps telling our brains that everything is urgent, and Dr. Elisha Goldstein says that is exactly why so many of us feel overwhelmed even when nothing is technically wrong. In this deeply helpful episode of The 1000 Hours Outside Podcast, Ginny Yurich talks with Dr. Goldstein, psychologist and author of Tiny Shifts, about techno-stress, the overwhelm loop, why our bodies get stuck in urgency, and how small emotional pivots can actually change the way we move through stress, parenting, relationships, and daily life. From taking one breath and lowering your shoulders to asking better questions, naming what you feel, savoring good moments, and getting outside with your kids even when they resist, this conversation is full of simple practices that feel doable in real life. In this candid and wide-ranging conversation, Vance brings on geneticist and light researcher Kate Crosby — someone he talks to almost daily — to explore the science behind the body's hidden timekeepers. They dig into how the thyroid regulates hormones and why losing it might put you on "synthetic time," why vitamin D and magnesium are so tightly linked, how intense exercise can unlock forgotten memories, and the surprising ways your ancestral latitude shapes everything from your seasonal diet to your fertility. The conversation takes unexpected turns into sunlight exposure, skin hardening, the Protestant vs. Catholic divide mapped onto geography, and whether modern life has knocked our biological clocks permanently off course. This is the kind of conversation Vance wants his daughters to hear — honest, curious, and willing to follow ideas wherever they lead.Guest: Kate Crosby is a geneticist and researcher specializing in light biology and light recipes for plant growth and human health.Articulate.Ventures/IBCLegacyInterviews.com

Your grandmother was right: going for a walk really does do you a power of good.Just how much, though, is something that we're only just beginning to discover — a point made beautifully by the writer and researcher Annabel Streets, who joins James Fisher on this week's Country Life Podcast.Annabel's book The Walking Cure has been hugely successful, and she spoke to us on the eve of its paperback publication. It's a fascinating talk, ranging from psychological impact of getting up off the sofa to the very real difference that where you walk can make. A walk along the sea front brings a completely different feel to a walk through the woods — and scientists are also discovering that a walk through a city, though stressful in terms of dealing with traffic, can be enormously stimulating in an entirely different way, something which new scientific techniques are beginning to show for the first time. Annabel also talks about her own walking journeys across the world, and how they've changed her. It's a fascinating talk — and the ideal thing to listen to as you get out and about for a walk near where you live.Annabel's book The Walking Cure is out now in paperback — see more details. Annabel Streets also writes, and posts on Instagram, as Annabel Abbs — you can follow her here. Innovation in life sciences is accelerating; the way companies manage their customer relationships is not. That gap — between the speed of science and the pace of commercial relationship-building — is the uncomfortable starting point for this Resonance Test conversation with Dinesh Salvi, Former Vice President, Head of Digital & IT Customer Engagement Platforms at Bristol Myers Squibb and Markus Hinderberger, Global Head of Commercial Advisory at EPAM. These two practitioners have spent considerable time thinking about what modern engagement requires. Hinderberger names the core problem plainly: Too many organizations are still running "a CRM that behaves like a glorified call-recording tool." The system exists, the fields get filled in and the boxes get checked, but the intelligence never compounds and the experience never improves. Salvi agrees and identifies the real obstacle. (Spoiler: It's not the technology.) "The biggest difference is adoption and use," he says. Features don't matter if the people who use the tool don't trust it. For that to happen, the CRM has to earn its place — becoming something closer to a "companion" that supports work… and doesn't add friction to it. Both men say volume is no longer the metric that matters. Access to customers today is selective. "The doors are open," says Hinderberger, "but they're only open to a few" — the companies that show up with something genuinely useful every time. That raises the stakes on each and every interaction, and it changes what good preparation looks like across the commercial organization. Meeting that bar requires more than a motivated sales rep. It requires personalization and orchestration across channels, and it can't live inside a single function. Salvi and Hinderberger talk through what it means to create a genuine "red thread" connecting every touchpoint: the reimbursement specialist, the nurse educator, the sales representative, the medical science liaison, the call-center staffer. When those people operate as disconnected nodes, the customer experience feels episodic. When they share context, it feels consistent — and that consistency is what builds the kind of relationship that survives a crowded market. Of course, modernization has to survive reality, too. The conversation doesn't shy away from the practical constraints that most of the health ecosystem is working with: limited budgets, legacy platforms, and what Salvi describes as the "patchwork" that defines most commercial tech stacks. So should life sciences orgs pursue "big T or little T" transformation? And how is momentum kept alive while working toward something more ambitious? Hinderberger's approach is pragmatic: Define the ideal end state, work backwards from it, and make sure near-term wins are real enough to sustain organizational belief in the project. When it works, the payoff isn't prettier dashboards or cleaner pipeline reports. Salvi argues that a CRM that becomes a true "copilot" can deliver value "tenfold" — finally giving organizations the ability to capture real field data and activate it in an intelligent ecosystem. That's the version of CRM that justifies the investment. That's also the version most life sciences companies haven't built… yet. Your body already knows how to come back to centre. The problem is we rarely give it the right signal, long enough, often enough, to override modern stress. We talk with Spencer DeLeal, president of Art of Living Canada, about how rhythmic breathing and mindfulness can help reset the nervous system when life starts to feel like constant fight or flight. We dig into Sudarshan Kriya, a structured breathing technique built around rhythm, and why the breath is the most overlooked “inner technology” for stress management, anxiety, focus, and resilience. Spencer explains how stress chemistry like cortisol can hijack clear thinking and push us into reaction, and why practices that pull us into the present moment can change the way we show up at work and at home. We also connect this to real-world health: hypertension, inflammation, and the hard truth that progress disappears when we drop the daily routine. Then we get practical about what an Art of Living retreat in Quebec actually feels like: simple comfortable accommodations, vegetarian meals, morning yoga, guided breathing sessions, lakes, trails, and optional Ayurvedic spa treatments, plus a real chance at a digital detox. Spencer shares powerful outcomes from veterans' programming, including a story about deep sleep returning after years of hypervigilance, and we talk about how learning in a group can accelerate growth the same way a guide accelerates learning outdoors. If you've been running on fumes, take this as your sign to try something measurable and repeatable. Listen, share this with someone who needs a reset, and subscribe and leave a review with your biggest question about breathwork and stress.
Have you ever felt a quiet, persistent restlessness — a sense that no matter how good life gets, something still feels off? In this episode, Niki Kirby unpacks the powerful biblical theme of "exile" from her book The Garden of Exile, revealing how the human story—from Eden to eternity—is one of displacement and longing for true home. She reframes modern discomfort as a spiritual ache for shalom, inviting listeners to see their discontent not as something to numb, but as something that points to God's greater restoration story. Drawing from Scripture, Niki shares how we can live faithfully in exile as she explores how we are called to build, plant, love, and multiply even in a broken world. From navigating spiritual warfare and avoiding distraction, to embracing relationships as tools of sanctification, she offers a grounded and hopeful vision for everyday faithfulness. With a powerful emphasis on lament as holy ground and hope as a daily fight, this conversation reminds us that while we may not feel at home here, we are not without purpose—and restoration is coming. Join us with comedian/podcaster Kyle Ayers for a chaotic episode where where we cover tennis judging, Apple Store warfare tactics, and the existential terror that is Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Kyle stops by fresh from refereeing children's tennis matches (he's basically a scarecrow with authority) to discuss his podcast Never Seen It, creating comedy segments out of thin air, and that time he opened for a houseplant named Colby. The gang bonds over their shared Apple Store trauma, where we learn that corporate empathy training actually works on kindergarten tennis players. We also tackle the hard-hitting questions: Are monarch butterflies the real villains? Did Courage the Cowardly Dog predict modern anxiety? And why does every important childhood memory involve either Rocco's Modern Life or nitrous oxide? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
