TCW Podcast Episode 232 - All the Other Home Pongs The home Pong market of the mid-1970s extended far beyond the big three—Atari, Coleco, and Magnavox. Numerous smaller companies entered the scene, not only in the United States but also across Europe and other parts of the world. As the home gaming industry rapidly evolved, many manufacturers introduced unique systems powered by integrated circuits. The market truly took off with the advent of “Pong-on-a-Chip” technology, which made it possible for virtually anyone to build a Pong console. Combined with affordable manufacturing in the Far East, this innovation drove costs down and helped the market reach new heights. An episode that dives deep! Here's what's in store for today's episode: * Recently, SpongeBob's voice actor, Tom Kenny, confirmed that SpongeBob is explicitly an autistic character—surprising absolutely no one!* Our hosts kick off the episode by exploring the autistic life and childhood of the show's creator, Stephen Hillenburg, who developed SPINs (special interests) in marine life and Jacques Cousteau as early as age six.* During Hillenburg's time at the Orange County Marine Institute, he created the character Bob the Sponge and wrote The Intertidal Zone, though he faced challenges in getting the book published.* After that, he dove headfirst into his other SPIN—animation—working as an assistant on well-known cartoons before landing a role at a then-small channel called Nickelodeon.* While working on the 90s Nicktoon Rocko's Modern Life, Hillenburg crossed paths with voice actor Tom Kenny. The two collaborated seamlessly, and as we know, Kenny would later become the iconic voice of SpongeBob.* SpongeBob SquarePants debuted as Nickelodeon's first original Saturday morning cartoon on May 1, 1999, achieving massive success. It quickly surpassed Pokémon as the top Saturday morning cartoon. By 2002, the show boasted an audience of 61 million viewers, including 20 million adults aged 18 to 49.* In 2002, Hillenburg wanted to end production of the show, but Nickelodeon saw it as far too lucrative to stop. He left after the release of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie in 2004 but returned to work on the show from Season 9 until his passing. SpongeBob SquarePants remains a wildly successful cartoon, still airing new episodes on Nickelodeon 25 years later.* Stephen Hillenburg was known for valuing his privacy and leading a quiet life. However, his autistic sense of justice was evident through his philanthropic efforts, particularly his work with the United Plankton Charitable Trust, which supported environmental and marine conservation initiatives.* Tragically, in 2017, Hillenburg was diagnosed with ALS, a disease that has also been linked to autism.* The character of SpongeBob is like a walking DSM-5 autism diagnosis checklist. He struggles with reading social cues, doesn't realize when he's being bothersome, and while he can be annoying at times, his genuine nature makes him endearing.* SpongeBob also exhibits many other autistic traits, such as having meltdowns, struggling to learn to drive, taking things literally, and showcasing astute problem-solving skills.* SpongeBob also has a special interest in his job as a fry cook, making him the happiest workaholic on television. His passion for flipping Krabby Patties and dedication to his work shine through in every episode, showcasing his deep focus and enthusiasm for what he loves.* We then dive into the legendary career of Tom Kenny, SpongeBob's iconic voice actor. With a prolific career in voice acting, Tom has brought characters to life in cartoons like Rocko's Modern Life, Adventure Time, The Powerpuff Girls, Transformers, and many more. His versatility and talent have made him one of the most beloved figures in animation.* The autistic-coded traits that Tom Kenny exhibits have had a significant influence on his portrayal of SpongeBob, a character he has explicitly stated is autistic. Kenny's unique approach to SpongeBob's voice, humor, and mannerisms brings a depth to the character that resonates with many in the autistic community.* Sami, our Content Manager (who is autistic and dyspraxic), noticed clear traits of dyspraxia and motor skills difficulties in Patrick, especially in the episode where he's training at the Krusty Krab. Patrick struggles with tasks like mopping and opening jar lids, which reflect the challenges many with dyspraxia face. What's truly heartwarming is how SpongeBob consistently helps Patrick, never giving up on him during the training—showcasing the importance of patience, support, and friendship.* Listen to the episode for a deep dive into how SpongeBob SquarePants portrays neurodivergent traits, and how characters like SpongeBob and Patrick provide meaningful representation and support in ways that resonate with many autistic and neurodivergent viewers!“When we see someone autistic like SpongeBob, we just kind of know it. We kind of don't need to talk to SpongeBob's mom. Thanks. Got it. ” - Angela“One of the joys of being autistic is that we vibe with other people. We have a sixth sense where we are very bottom-up data processors. We do a phenomenon that is referred to as matrixing, where we unconsciously grab a whole bunch of variables and throw them together to get a picture - which is why autistic people are so easily able to identify other autistic people, but neurotypical people have no idea what to make of us and we're strange mysterious cryptids from the woods. So, yeah.” - Matt In this episode, we dive deep into the world of everyone's favorite sponge, SpongeBob, and explore how his character is an unintentionally perfect portrayal of autism. From his social struggles to his unique problem-solving skills, we examine the traits that make him both endearing and relatable to the autistic community. Join Matt and Angela as they unpack how SpongeBob's world reflects the real-life experiences of many autistic individuals, and share your thoughts with us using #AutisticCultureCatch on social media. Oh Come, All Ye Goosebuddies! Your hosts Chad Quandt, Paul Ritchey, and Kevin Cole revisit two 90s cartoon holiday episodes. First we check out ABC's Recess's politically correct 'Yes, Mikey, Santa Does Shave' guest starring James Earl Jones and Michael McKean in which Chad's cartoon proxy Mikey challenges 3rd Street to prove Santa is real. We then shift to the more subversive with Nickelodeon's Rocko's Modern Life's holiday episode 'Can't Squeeze Cheer From a Cheese Log!' otherwise known as Rocko's Modern Christmas. Rocko's hoping friends come by for the holidays, including some mysterious elves next door. Is Santa dead? Are Elves keeping the legend alive like the Bat Family does in Batman's absence? Unsure, but a cloud poops snow and Mr. Bigfoot gets capped in the knee. Pretty good. We also talk about Sonic the Hedgehog canon and Chad's love for the female southern brawler archetype. Enjoy and happy holidays! Welcome to the penultimate episode of our ninth season, featuring Pat Irwin of Suss. You may remember him from last year's Suss talk, with his bandmates Jonathan Gregg and Bob Holmes, but he's back for a solo talk this time, which allowed us to dig into his wild life in music, from his time in the the late ‘70s New York No Wave scene with The Raybeats and 8-Eyed Spy, to his work with Southern freak icons The B-52s, and his long career crafting music for TV and animation, including shows like Rocko's Modern Life and Bored to Death. Things have been very, very busy on the Suss front. This year, Irwin contributed guitars, keyboards, harmonium, and loops to Suss' fifth album, Birds & Beasts. On top of that, Suss' Bob Holmes, who also hosts the must-listen Ambient Country podcast, has launched Across the Horizon, a collaboration with Northern Spy Records that brings on board various like-minded artists drawn “from the wide landscape of instrumental music” (including Transmissions guests like Luke Schneider, Marisa Anderson, William Tyler and more) to curate a series of digital releases that will culminate next year in a double LP comp. Looks Unfamiliar is a podcast in which writer and occasional broadcaster Tim Worthington talks to a guest about some of the things that they remember that nobody else ever seems to.Joining Tim this time is journalist Mic Wright, who's rummaging around in a crisp bag in search of Cargo by Men At Work, Rocko's Modern Life, Party Animals, Solitary Fitness by Charles Bronson and Tazos. Along the way we'll be discussing how to avoid Ebeneezer Goode Syndrome, ruminating on The Thinking Man's Pog, trying to swap a duplicate Michael Parkinson Tazo for three Matt Smiths and revealing just how close Tupac Shakur came to appearing in Ballykissangel. You can find more editions of Looks Unfamiliar at http://timworthington.org/. You can also find Mic on Looks Unfamiliar talking about The Adventures Of Pete And Pete, Army And Navy Sweets, Emergency by 999, Rock On by David Essex, Thunderbirds comic and the murky origins of a certain unsavoury playground rumour here and I Helped Patrick McGoohan Escape by The Times, Clarissa Explains It All, 2000 AD strip Nikolai Dante, Sharky And George, Jeff Lint and The Game here.If you enjoy Looks Unfamiliar, why not buy us a coffee here? I'd say they should do a Kenco Tazo, but... it would probably logistically have to be a set based on Tenko.
This week, Bunnie sits down with Alexandra Kay, the country artist with a knack for turning everyday moments into something magic. Ryan and Cindy start their fifth year of podcasting with a very…lackluster Pay Per View showing as we go down hill on the back half of 1999. We go to Charlotte or in one case Hell, for the WWF's September PPV. Among the many topics: The return of Vince McMahon proving that in 1999 gone forever meant approximately 7 weeks. Vince winning the World title as the push Triple H as hard as possible campaign shows no signs of slowing down. The referees unionizing and going on strike, for unsafe working condition, forcing SCAB referees. Steve Blackman turning his murderous rage to Val Venis and then attempting to go after a conspicuous buxom EMT. D-Lo Brown getting a measure of revenge on Sexual Chocolate. Jeff Jarrett and Chyna having a lackluster match, that luckily gets some personality infused by Mae Young and Fabulous Moolah. The New Age Outlaws reunite because…reasons? A recap of the epic Big Boss Man/Al Snow feud and the Kennel From Hell that, well IYKYK and if not I recommend the Mick Foley/Kevin Kelly commentary from DVD. The sudden exit of Ken Shamrock from the WWF and the shock that he never came back for even a cameo. Chris Jericho's WWF PPV debut in a good match with X-Pac that suffers from very late crowd heat. The British Bulldog's back and bigger than ever! We also talk about the previous Smackdown featuring 5 (!) Triple H matches. The Six-Pack match kind of just happening for no reason, but it being kind of fun I guess The night after featuring the infamous This Is Your Life Rock featuring Yurple, Mr. Rocko, and the Rock's highschool girlfriend offering him a nice piece of that Poontang Pie! Enjoy!

An American glass artist best known for his modern approach to centuries-old techniques, Rocko Belloso specializes in murrine, cut and flip, stringer drawing, and sculpture. He is an innovator in his combination of these elements as well as his custom color mixing methods. His work presents an updated aesthetic with influences from comic books, cult movies, metal music, and lowbrow art, ranging from stylized depictions to hyper-realistic portraits. As a young teen, Belloso anticipated attending art school to become a cartoonist, but his plans changed in 2003 when he saw the two-dimensional rendering possibilities of murrine glass. He consequentially accepted a glassblowing apprenticeship and employment at Third Eye Design in California, where he spent the next seven years as a production artist, assigned to making mostly dry pipes. In his free time, Belloso took classes from artists including Scott Deppe, Jesse Taj, Marcel Braun, and Jason Lee, whom he respectively credits with learning murrine, chip stacking, line-work, and reticello. In 2010, Belloso began doing hourly work for an independent glass distributor, affording him more freedom to explore these specialized techniques. In 2014, as his murrine work gained popularity in flameworking circles, the artist took the leap and began working for himself. Since becoming an independent artist, Belloso has received accolades for his unique work, which has been displayed at galleries and created at live demos across the country. His art has been included in various glass competitions, for which he has received medals and first-place awards. He has also served as a judge at the World Series of Glass and Champs Glass Games. The artist was recently a selected competitor among some of the best boro artists in the industry at Midwest Meltdown. To date, Belloso has been an integral part of every Molten Build – the brainchild of friend and artist Adam Hoobrey aka “Hoobs” – an incredible collaboration with some of the most skilled torch artists, resulting in massive, detailed functional boro sculpture. As a result of his extensive knowledge and groundbreaking applications, Belloso has been invited to teach workshops at institutions including the Corning Museum of Glass, Carlisle School of Glass Art, and numerous glass studios coast-to-coast. He just finished a glass sculpting class at Salem Community College Glass Center and will be teaching Creating Narratives in 2D: Borosilicate Cut & Flip Techniques, August 3 – 14, 2024, at Pilchuck Glass School, Stanwood, Washington, with Eriko Kobayashi as his TA. Info and registration: https://www.pilchuck.org/programs/session_5_storykeeping Over the past year, Belloso and flameworking icon Paul Stankard have been transferring the soft glass techniques Stankard pioneered into borosilicate glass. The duo recently demonstrated the processes at Salem Community College's International Flameworking Conference, held March 15 – 17, 2024. They are currently developing a new body of work, Momento Mori, for future exhibition at WheatonArts, Millville, New Jersey, dates TBA. Stankard states: “Rocko Belloso, who is a master in the borosilicate world, was able to interpret my botanical vocabulary in a way that has inspired me, knowing that a new botanical aesthetic is going to evolve in borosilicate glass. I was assisting Rocko with keeping things hot, organizing the vacuum pick-up for the honeybees, and all-around taking advantage of his incredible talent. I'm fascinated with the possibility of different aesthetic results that could develop by using borosilicate glass. The quality of the colors and clear glass rods is impressive. It takes a lot longer to encase the components and ball up the glass; that said Rocko brings skill and patience to the task. I prefer the title Boro Flower Balls and believe that future collectors will embrace this new work – going beyond the paperweight world with enthusiastic collectors building large collections with a wide range of artists represented.”

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Neil Kraus, professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin, River Falls, to discuss his recent book The Fantasy Economy: Neoliberalism, Inequality, and the Education Reform Movement. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel's continuing strikes in Lebanon, the growing death count in Gaza, Congress averting a government shutdown and funding wars, Medicare, Wayne LaPierre's reign over the NRA, and another brewing Boebert scandal, before parsing through the new footage from January 6 (now three years out), and the evolution of the GOP's attempt to spin it. Neil Kraus then joins, diving right into the fantasy of the neoliberal consensus that has reshaped the economy, and our education system, in the interests of corporations and the wealthy, exploring, in particular, how it has manufactured an antagonistic relationship between the public and our education system. Expanding on this, Professor Kraus tackles the myths that the political class has perpetrated against education, pinning the blame on the system for everything from employment and wages to failing industry, before stepping back to tackle the failures of these myths, and how they obscure the role of general economic conditions. After assessing the neoliberal-libertarian coalition in the attack on public and higher education, Neil, Sam, and Emma discuss whether we are at the end of the neoliberal consensus, and what it will take to swing the political fight over education. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss Donald Trump's theories on magnets, Obamacare, and the Civil War – each growing in concern – watch Mehdi Hasan's final sign-off on NBC, and get another British masterclass on the weaponization of white feminism. Brett Weinstein and Dave Rubin discuss the trauma of being blocked by Elon Musk, Cory from Branton breaks Sam's heart, and Rocko in the UK expands on the implications of insurrection, plus, your calls and IMs!
