Last Week Paramount debuted its third release of 1979 film Star Trek: the Motion Picture. Does this remastered version of the earlier director's cut solve all of the issues with the original film? Not quite. Overall opinions vary on the sum total of the endeavor. On one end of the spectrum it can be seen as a sweeping visual spectacle that heralds the original Enterprise crew's transition to the big screen. On the other it remains a monochromatic, epically slow, big budget remake of the season two episode The Changeling. Barry, Dave and Tod are joined by Brian Mix, who himself has several connections to the film. Note: at no time during this episode does Tod utter the phrase, “The Motionless Picture” so that's progress. There's also some catching up on Picard, a run down of the wallet busting list of 1/6 scale Star Trek figures announced by EXO-6, the usual Random Topics and a round of What's in the Box. Thanks for Listening!

Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle
In Episode 87 of the Crooked Table Podcast, Robert Yaniz Jr. takes another detour from the world of movies to lavish praise on Dirty Computer, the third studio album by Janelle Monáe. Released back in April, this latest work is a concept album — complete with a 49-minute "emotion picture" — celebrating individuality, free expression and being true to who you are. For Monáe, Dirty Computer represents her most ambitious project to date, as the music reflects her own journey to embrace her sexuality and truly come into her own as an artist. Listen in as Rob shares why he's fallen hard for the album and Monáe's authentic-as-hell masterwork. Dirty Computer synopsis, courtesy of IMDB: An Android, Jane 57821, attempts to break free from the constraints of a totalitarian society that forcibly makes Jane comply with its homophobic beliefs. „I don't want another single pop-culture reference out of you for the rest of the trip.
This week we are discussing choice fatigue, how it can negatively impact your life and how to navigate through that. Not before, trashing He Who Must Not Be Named, giving props to Women of Color and giving Janelle Monae her roses. Myf and Zan have been diving into the many reviews and think-pieces following the White House Correspondent's dinner monologue by comedian Michelle Wolf. Meanwhile Janelle Monae has released one of the albums of the year, with an “emotion picture” to boot. And the fate of a band's album was once in the hands of Pitchfork reviews, but does it still have the power to make or break?
