This summer, in June 2023, Janelle Monáe put out her fourth album, The Age of Pleasure. Listening to it made me want to revisit her Song Exploder episode, from 2018. One thing on Song Exploder that I personally love is when we get to hear an artist's raw voice memo, from the moment when they're first coming up with a song idea. This episode has one of my all-time favorites. Janelle Monáe is an award-winning musician and actress who released her first record in 2007. She's been nominated for multiple Grammys, and she starred in the Oscar films Moonlight and Hidden Figures. In April 2018, she released her third album, Dirty Computer, which includes this song, “So Afraid.” In this episode, Janelle Monáe takes “So Afraid” apart, to explain how she built it, step by step—beginning with a trip to the dentist. The Age of Pleasure is that “paradise found,” where she can, and does, love quite freely. “We're in the Age of Pleasure baby, the Age of Pleasure,” Monáe reinstates to me over Zoom. On her last album, Dirty Computer, Monáe's alter-ego Jane 57821 led a group of Black femme dissidents who broke free from The New Order, the totalitarian group of oppressors, and now they are living and loving in the Age of Pleasure. The “paradise found” in The Age of Pleasure is an island of Black beauty, somewhere in the humid Caribbean, where it's always golden hour, fresh fruit is being served in abundance to a beautiful group of people who do not make a distinction between friends and lovers.   Could the power of story-telling help create a better reality?  Afterglow is a stunning collection of original short stories in which writers from many different backgrounds envision a radically different climate future. Published in collaboration with Grist, a nonprofit media organization dedicated to telling stories of climate solutions, these stirring tales expand our ability to imagine a better world. Afterglow draws inspiration from a range of cutting-edge literary movements including Afrofuturism, hope-punk, and solar-punk—genres that uplift equitable climate solutions and continued service to one's community, even in the face of despair. The Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, disabled, feminist, and queer voices in this collection imagine intersectional worlds in which no community is left behind. Whether through abundance or adaptation, reform, or a new understanding of survival, these stories offer flickers of hope, even joy, as they provide a springboard for exploring how fiction can help create a better reality. Kris is away this week, so Tara lit up the Queer Signal and her friend from Toronto, Amanda, showed up. Amanda and Tara talk different Pride events and their own queer journeys, before diving into recommendations. If you enjoy this episode, please consider buying Kris & Tara a Ko-fi! Official Recommendations Tara describes Purposefully Accidental by G. Benson as an explosion of trope candy. Enemies to lovers? It's in there. Slow burn? You betcha. Fake relationships? Of course! It follows the story of a famous actress coming back into contact with a childhood friend she once humiliated, who still holds a grudge. A grudge that develops into…romance! Amanda's recommendation is The Untamed (2019), which is a difficult TV series to sum up. It's a fantasy historical Chinese drama set in a world where cultivators (spiritual warriors) battle evil spirits, demons, and sometimes each other in cross-clan conflict. But really, it's just the story of two lovely boys who, while queer in the original source material, aren't allowed to be overtly queer onscreen, due to censorship. That said, it's still pretty gay and a great story. What does it mean to have agency over your memories? What do you gain when you put your phone down and pay attention to what's happening right in front of you? And what's a dirty computer, anyway? Before Janelle Monáe was a Grammy-nominated artist, she was busy writing short stories. As a kid, she wrote science fiction and horror stories, including one where her grandmother was abducted by aliens. But her love of sci-fi and horror didn't stop there — it's something you can hear in her albums, like The ArchAndroid and Dirty Computer. Tom spoke with Janelle when she released her first collection of short stories called The Memory Librarian: And Other Stories of Dirty Computer.

Musician, actor, and fashion icon Janelle Monáe has long been creating sci-fi worlds through her albums and performances. With her new short story collection The Memory Librarian, Monáe, along with a team of collaborators, expands on the Afrofuturistic world of one of her critically acclaimed albums, Dirty Computer.  Dirty Computer introduced us to a world where people's memories—a key to self-expression and self-understanding—could be controlled or erased by an increasingly powerful few. And whether human, A.I., or something in-between, citizen's lives and sentience were dictated by those of the New Dawn, who'd convinced themselves they had the right to decide fate—that was, until Jane 57821 remembered and broke free. On April 24, 2022, Monáe came to the Sydney Goldstein Theater in San Francisco to appear in conversation with one of the Memory Librarian collaborators, short story writer Yohanca Delgado, and George M. Johnson, whose memoir All Boys Aren't Blue, has been banned in a recent wave of censorship of books dealing with themes like race and gender identity.

Pop Filter: A Decade of ExcellenceAlbum of the Decade YourPopFilter celebrates 11 years of podcasts by choosing the most important album of the last decade! Nothing defines a decade like its albums. Maybe the kids don't like them as much anymore. Heck, maybe they're not hip, but darn it they're important. Plus, the last decade had some of our favorite artists making some of our favorite albums. Dirty Computer, by Janelle Monae; Lemonade, by Beyoncé; and Fetch the Bolt Cutters, by Fiona Apple; just to name a few. These albums helped make the show what it is today. In many ways the albums of the last decade taught us about music, but more importantly they taught us a little something about life. So we did what we always do and made them fight it out to see which was the most deserving of our love. It's how we were raised. It's how we will die.  All of that, and inevitably more, on an all-new PopFilter Podcast! Make sure to also: Check out the 1975 bracket Visit our website Use our Amazon page! Join our Patreon team!
