In this episode, we unpack the standout looks and unexpected moments from the 2025 Met Gala, themed “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” From bold statements to subtle nods to tradition, we explore what worked, what didn't, and why Janelle Monáe's clockwork couture had us fully transfixed. We also reveal which attendee we'd choose to photograph if given the chance—spoiler: one of us is already envisioning a rooftop session with Monáe under city lights. Join us for thoughtful commentary, fashion insights, and a touch of dream-casting from behind the lens. #MetGala

Send us a textAmerica's power dynamics are laid bare in this unflinching examination of who gets regulated and who gets to break the rules. From the glittering Met Gala runway to polluted neighborhoods in Memphis, we connect seemingly disparate cultural moments to reveal a consistent pattern of privilege and control. The episode opens with a sharp critique of the Met Gala's first Black-themed event centered around dandyism. While celebrities like Teanna Taylor, Coleman Domingo and Janelle Monáe delivered stunning interpretations, we question why Black women were largely confined to traditionally masculine silhouettes rather than celebrating the full spectrum of Black feminine aesthetics. This exploration of cultural representation sets the stage for more serious discussions about power imbalances.Meanwhile, celebrities like Future and Trippie Redd face ruthless critique for their appearances and behavior, revealing our complicated relationship with Black male image and identity. The conversation takes a powerful turn when examining a viral incident where a white woman called a Black child a racial slur at a park. "Why don't white men say these words to our faces?" becomes a pointed challenge that exposes how racism often operates through proxies while avoiding direct confrontation and consequences. Perhaps most damning is our analysis of Trump's selective regulation policies. After meeting with Nick Saban, Trump quickly moved to regulate college athletes' NIL deals, potentially limiting Black students' earning potential. Yet simultaneously, Elon Musk's company operates unpermitted methane turbines in a predominantly Black Memphis neighborhood with seemingly no consequences. This stark contrast crystallizes America's inconsistent approach to government oversight depending on who benefits and who suffers.Whether examining academic cheating through AI, celebrity culture, or marriage economics, the episode repeatedly returns to one troubling question: why do we only seem interested in controlling Black success while letting corporations and the wealthy operate under different rules? Join us for an eye-opening conversation that will challenge your understanding of how power operates in America today.

Kim Marsh and Alice Nagle from Fetch the Smelling Salts podcast join Flixwatcher to review Kim's choice Hidden Figures. Hidden Figures (2016) is loosely based on the non-fiction book of the same name by Margot Lee Shetterly. It tells the incredible true story of the biographies of three African-American women who worked as computers to solve problems for engineers and others at NASA. Directed by Theodore Melfi it stars Taraji P. Henson as Katherine Goble Johnson, Octavia Spencer as Dorothy Vaughan and Janelle Monáe as Mary Jackson. Other real life character include Mahershala Ali as Jim Johnson, who marries Katherine and Glen Powell as astronaut John Glenn. In fictional roles it also stars Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst and Jim Parsons. Hidden Figures shines a light on the impressive work done by women of colour in behind the scenes roles. However, there are a number of fictional scenes and several inaccuracies, some that lean into the white saviour trope. Recommendability scores were very favourable despite the historical inaccuracies. Fairly solid scores across the remaining categories give a very respectable score of 4.34 overall. For episode 160 of the podcast, join Rain Phoenix at Licorice Pizza as she hosts an engaging conversation with legendary songwriter Diane Warren and rising musician Mergui. This episode offers a deep dive into Diane's illustrious career, her creative process, and her collaboration with Mergui on the song "Criminal." The discussion provides unique perspectives on the music industry, including insights from one of modern music’s most celebrated songwriters. IN THIS EPISODE:  [5:05] Diane Warren's early musical influences [11:10] Writing I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing and OSCAR nominations [13:00] Diane launches Mergui [15:28] Diane's versatility across musical genres [20:00] Mergui’s insights on sampling Elton John’s song KEY TAKEAWAYS:  Diane Warren's journey into songwriting began at a young age, sparked by her fascination with record credits. She would study the names of songwriters on albums, dreaming of seeing her own name there one day. This early passion and determination set her on a path to becoming one of the most successful songwriters in the industry. Despite the challenges faced by women in the music industry, Diane never let her gender define her capabilities. Inspired by trailblazers like Carole King, she pursued her career with confidence, never doubting her potential to succeed as a songwriter. Collaboration with artists like Mergui showcases Diane and Mergui's ability to adapt and thrive in different musical genres. Diane’s intuitive sense for matching songs with the right artists has led to successful partnerships, allowing her to continue creating timeless music across various styles. It’s important for songwriters to find the right artist to sing and produce their songs, someone who will honor and preserve the meaning and the music. That’s when the magic happens. She has penned nine #1 and thirty-three top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and is tied for having written the most #1 songs as a sole writer in Billboard history. She was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2001 and received the prestigious Johnny Mercer Award from the organization in June 2024. She has received 16 Academy Award nominations, is a GRAMMY winner with 15 nominations, an EMMY winner, and is a two-time Golden Globe winner whose songs have been featured in more than 150 films. In November 2022, Warren became the first songwriter in history to receive an Honorary Oscar, as voted on by the Academy's Board of Governors. She recently wrote the original song "The Fire Inside," performed by Becky G for the film Flamin' Hot, directed by Eva Longoria, which marked her 15th Oscar nomination. She most recently wrote the original song “The Journey” performed by H.E.R. for the feature film The Six Triple Eight directed by Tyler Perry which marked her 16th Oscar nomination. She is the sole owner of her publishing company Realsongs, the most successful female-owned and operated business in the music industry. Warren is a recipient of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a nod to her legendary career, having worked with many of today's most popular artists, including Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, H.E.R., Snoop Dogg, Paloma Faith, Jon Batiste, Maren Morris, John Legend, Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, Andra Day, Justin Bieber, Jennifer Hudson and Janelle Monáe, in addition to having written songs for iconic artists such as Whitney Houston, Cher, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, and many more.   Mergui has made it his mission to push the limits of modern pop music. He’s accomplished some incredible feats such as opening for Bruno Mars and Maroon 5. His talent has been recognized by publications such as Rolling Stone, Billboard, Wonderland Magazine, and Notion. Drawing inspiration from the rich tapestry of early 20th-century Italian opera and the nostalgic allure of ‘70s AM pop, Mergui’s sophomore EP Shadows of Blue was a remarkable fusion of influences. Notable tracks from the EP include the Elton John-approved “Cry,” and “Happy Now?”, which he performed on The Kelly Clarkson Show and NBC’s The TODAY Show, resulting in the track skyrocketing to the Top 10 on the U.S. iTunes Singer/Songwriter charts. Mergui’s music has been featured in top-notch editorial playlists across digital service platforms including Spotify’s New Music Friday (US & Global), Chill Pop, New Pop Picks, and Just Good Music. Mergui’s unguarded sense of vulnerability shines through in his art, landing him a coveted spot on People Magazine’s Emerging Artists of 2024 list. Following a successful tour with Forest Blakk and a collaboration with Sam Feldt in the latter half of 2024, Mergui is ready to take 2025 by storm with the release of his latest EP Nobody Really Knows.

Beyoncé finally got her crowning glory of Best Album of the Year at the 67th Grammy Awards—something that has eluded her illustrious career for decades. “Cowboy Carter” added to her collection of Grammys, I think it was number 36. The singer, who was visibly surprised, dedicated her award to Linda Martel, the first Black woman to perform solo at the Grand Ole Opry. And by the way, Ms. Martel, who's 83, is featured on several of “Cowboy Carter” songs, and it makes Beyoncé the first Black woman to win Album of the Year since 1999, when Lauryn Hill's “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” took the title. Now, while accepting her award for Best Rap Album, Doechii—who is only the third woman to win the honor—thanked God and her mom, Celicia Moore, whom she brought up on stage with her to share the moment. Doechii delivered a powerful message to all of the little Black girls out there, saying they could do whatever they dream of. This year's Grammy telecast, of course, was shifted after the L.A. fires to a fundraiser. And by the end of the show, America had raised more than $7 million for many of the people suffering after the Eaton and Palisades fires. And now for some of the stuff you probably didn't see: that Associated Press reporter who dissed music legend Babyface. In the middle of her interview, she saw Chappell Roan and left Babyface mid-sentence. She didn't apologize until after the clip went viral. And by now, you may have seen Kanye West's wife, who left little to the imagination by going completely naked underneath a sheer minidress. They left after a few minutes on the carpet—hey, nudity is against the law in L.A.! And then there's Kendrick Lamar, who had a great night with five wins, including Song and Record of the Year. But one of the best moments for me was the tribute to the late Quincy Jones, led by Stevie Wonder, who was joined by a student choir from Pasadena Waldorf School and Palisades High School—both severely damaged by the wildfires. The tribute included Cynthia Erivo and Herbie Hancock, who I've got to say set a whole new standard for live performances, along with Jacob Collier, Janelle Monáe, and Lainey Wilson. Yes, it was a great night for the City of Angels, and music's biggest night did not disappoint. Now, we were on the red carpet and backstage in the press room—virtually—kind of an interesting setup. According to a September 2023 Pew Research Center survey, more than one in five Black adults in the United States believe that owning a business is essential for achieving financial success. Although Black-owned businesses have experienced significant growth in recent years, they still represent a small percentage of overall firms and revenue in the U.S., based on our analysis of federal data.   In 2021, majority Black-owned businesses accounted for only about 3% of all U.S. firms that could be classified by the race and ethnicity of their owners. These businesses generated just 1% of the total gross revenue from all classifiable companies that year, while roughly 14% of the American population identified as Black.   In 2021, Black or African American majority-owned firms provided income for approximately 1.4 million workers, with estimated annual payrolls of $53.6 billion. However, most Black-owned firms tend to be smaller enterprises. Two-thirds of these businesses had fewer than 10 employees, 13% had between 10 and 49 employees, and only 3% had 50 or more employees. Additionally, 16% reported having no employees at all (employment size is determined by the number of paid workers during the March 12 pay period according to the ABS).   Arias WebsterBerry is a seasoned entrepreneur, digital marketing expert, and certified Scrum Master with over a decade of experience. His films run the gamut really, and stylistically and genre. But he showed up early to get the tech right. He was super chatty. I always gauge, like, how someone is based on how they work with me because I'm not the host of that show. And if they're sort of friendly and helpful and wanting to get things right with me, it's usually a good sign that they're, you know, not just there for the glory of being on the show.” -- Jamie Muffett After twenty years of experience as an audio engineer and podcast producer with millions of downloads, as well as a successful voice talent and lead producer, my next guest founded RPS, a boutique podcast production company that turns the spark of an idea into compelling, beautiful-sounding podcasts. Broken Record with Rick Rubin, Malcolm Gladwell, Bruce Headlam and Justin Richmond

Janelle Monáe has had a lot to smile about this year. After a run of successful albums over the last decade, in June she released her fourth album, The Age of Pleasure. The album was just nominated for two Grammys including Album of the Year. This project is important—it signaled a big tone shift for Janelle whose past albums have centered in part around a recurring character named Cyndi Mayweather, an android who represents society's new “other.” Esthetically Janelle has always been buttoned up. For her first few album releases she made a point of always appearing in public in some iteration of a tuxedo. For The Age Of Pleasure though, she literally stripped down to almost nothing, flaunting a newfound freedom centered around Black joy and acceptance. On today's episode Justin Richmond talks to Janelle Monáe and her long time music partner Nate Wonder poolside, at their creative home base in the Hollywood Hills called Wondaland. Nate explains how The Age Of Pleasure album started with the simple conceit of making Janelle smile. Janelle also talks about why she decided to ditch a career in musical theater after college, and how THE Grace Jones ended up topless in Wondaland's now-infamous pool.
