Send us Fan MailMost men leave an interaction having done everything right — approached, connected, built rapport for forty-five minutes — and then walked away without ever pulling the trigger. They got the number. They didn't invite. And those are not the same thing. In this episode, Zan and Jordan return to one of the most fundamental and most overlooked principles in the Ars Amorata: the invitation. Not as a technique for scheduling a meeting, but as a spirit — a way of being that tells every woman in your orbit, I would rather have you near me than not. They get into why most men's invitational energy has an invisible ceiling on it: come close, but not too close. The father archetype Zan reaches for when explaining how a man can contain feminine chaos without walling himself off from it. The David Deida debate — whether the male nervous system is inherently stressed by female proximity, or whether that's just a man who hasn't found gratitude yet. And the single sentence that Zan says captures everything: I don't know you at all, but I would love to have you around me.Watch until the end for the practical layer: when to invite, how to invite, and why it doesn't matter at all whether she says yes or no.

What does it cost an artist to tell the truth? Singer-songwriter Zan Fiskum has built her entire creative life around finding out. In this episode, host Stephen Roach sits down with Zan to explore how her most personal songs, about a toxic creative relationship, a fractured friendship, and a complicated bond with her mother, became anthems for strangers carrying the same quiet weight. This is a conversation about the craft behind vulnerability: how to write specifically enough to be honest, and broadly enough to let the listener find themselves inside your story. If you've ever wondered whether your most painful experiences are worth putting into a song, this episode answers that question with a resounding yes.Key TakeawaysThe particular is the universal. Writing from your most specific, personal experience doesn't isolate your audience; it invites them in. The goal is to leave enough space in the lyric for listeners to find their own story.Vulnerability on stage is a form of service. Sharing something raw and real can give your audience permission to feel things they didn't think they were allowed to feel, and sometimes, to take action they've been avoiding for years.Faith doesn't require religious language. Drawing on C.S. Lewis, Zan articulates a conviction shared by many artists of faith: we don't need more Christian people making Christian art. We need Christians making art, beautiful, honest, human art.Your constraints can become your creative fuel. Whether it's a commission, a theme, or a question crowdsourced from strangers on the internet, working within limits can push you toward material you'd never find on your own.Resources MentionedZan Fiskum's album — Forbidden Art (available on all major streaming platforms) Makers and Mystics — "The Gift of the Elders" episode — A previous episode featuring Petrobas from New Zealand on how indigenous cultures honor their eldersZan's social media:Instagram: @zanfiskumSend us Fan MailSupport the showJOIN US FOR BOOK CLUB! Field of Miracles by Lauren Mooney and Stewart Pringle The Doctor, Tegan and Turlough arrive in the quaint village of Heatherington in 1951. But something strange is happening. In an England of post-war austerity, Heatherington is thriving - the shops are full of produce and everyone seems to have everything they've ever wanted, even if what they've wanted is the dead to return to them. The Doctor and his friends must stop the creeping invasion of the Asteri, wish-granting crystalline organisms of awesome destructive power, before they extract a terrible price from the villagers. Helter Skelter by James Moran When a bio-engineered planet and amusement park undergoes a critical malfunction, the entire planet tears itself apart - and the Doctor, Tegan and Turlough are thrown back to their arrival, trapped in a repeating time loop. But for some reason, only Tegan can see the loop, not the Doctor - it has been hidden from him somehow. So why can Tegan see it, and how is she going to fix it? Land of Fools by Lauren Mooney and Stewart Pringle The TARDIS arrives in London, 1980, but something has gone wrong with the timeline. The city is a quasi-police state, overseen by a mysterious new company, Luqos, which promises miraculous gifts to its followers. As Tegan takes off to reconnect with an old friend, and the Doctor teams up with young activist Zan, Turlough is pulled into the heart of Luqos by the shadowy 'M', where they discover an old enemy at work beneath the city. Please note: the collector's edition CD box set is strictly limited to 1,500 copies Recorded on: 15-17 October 2025 Recorded at: The Soundhouse and The Video Factory, New Zealand Producer Sonny McGann said: "Turlough, Tegan and the Doctor are back! We're returning to Earth, where a new threat has emerged wielding immense psionic power. In an England suffering from post-war austerity, one village appears to have everything they've ever wanted. Some will pay any price to see a wish fulfilled - a choice which may ripple through time. "Meanwhile, when a visit to an amusement park on a bio-engineered planet traps the Doctor and his friends in a time loop, one of our companions will have to step up to prevent the planet from tearing itself apart. Three new stories full of wit, emotion, and good technobabble, according to Peter Davison!" Producer Stewart Pringle, co-writer of the first and third episodes, said: "Tegan and Turlough are just great, aren't they? It's so lovely that this set is coming out around the time of Season 21 landing on Blu-ray because it's such a glorious period of Doctor Who. Field of Miracles is our tribute to The Android Invasion with shades of The Wicker Man." The second episode's writer James Moran added: "I will always refer to this story as Tegan Jovanka's Groundhog Day, which tells you all you need to know up front. It made me endlessly amused that I'd come up with a plot almost custom designed to make Tegan as angry as possible. And that was pretty much deliberate, to see how Janet would run with it!" The box set's other writer Lauren Mooney said: "Land of Fools is the Fifth Doctor in the 1980s with shades of Resurrection of the Daleks, but also a vibe of the Sylvester McCoy years. It's a proper little dystopia in a Back to the Future Part II mould, and it leads somewhere that we hope is unexpected. It's a thrill to write for this TARDIS team – the bickering, friction and lack of bonhomie gives this era such a delicious flavour of its own."

Send us Fan MailMost men reading Zan's work assume the Ars Amorata vision is a soft one — all light and ease, women as fluttering butterflies, every interaction kissed by poetry. But there's a shadow side to the archetype that gets quietly ignored, and an answer to a question that almost nobody dares to ask: what would the world actually look like if every man embodied this philosophy? In this episode, Jordan brings a question from a Guild member known only as X — a sweeping, visionary inquiry about what happens to relationship forms, dating culture, and the wider social fabric if all boys grew up versed in these principles. Zan and Jordan take the question seriously, and the conversation moves into territory neither expected. They get into Zan's heresy that women are a reflection of the men in society — and why he doesn't coach women at all. The dividing line between a man who's angry at women (workable) and a man who hates women (closed). The middle-of-the-road guy with no role models, caught between the gun-toting carnivore podcaster and the matcha-latte male feminist. The institutionalised hatred of masculinity in certain cultures that some Guild members are quietly writing in about. And Zan's growing conviction that his future work belongs with thirteen-year-old boys, not thirty-year-old men.Watch until the end for Jordan's take on what would actually change in a world full of Amorati men — and the one global shift he believes would matter more than any other.

Now, a brainquake has happened unto Zan.The mathematician-philosopher Alfred North Whitehead spent his life trying to understand the nature of reality. Ted Gibson and Jason Backe Live at ABS ChicagoSome conversations remind you why you got into this industry in the first place. This is one of them.Recorded live at ABS Chicago with co-host Geno Chapman, Corey sits down with Ted Gibson and Jason Backe for an hour covering three decades of hustle, heartbreak, reinvention, and beauty from the inside out.The Roads That Led HereNeither Ted nor Jason took a straight path in. Jason was a raver kid in Minneapolis who walked into beauty school and for the first time felt seen by a teacher. Ted was a Texas athlete who walked into a salon called Zan and Friends, saw a room full of stylish people in starched Wranglers, and decided that was the life. What followed was barber school, a cross-country move seeking fame, a detour to Atlanta to answer phones while switching his license, and a room with Confederate flags on the wall. He stayed anyway. The sacrifices nobody sees are always the foundation of the success they do.What Fame Actually CostsSaying yes to Angelina Jolie's hair for Tomb Raider changed everything. Vogue. Marie Claire. A PR firm that told them to drop the name Fame and call it Ted Gibson. A Fifth Avenue salon. A DC licensing deal tied to the Real Housewives. A move to LA where they gambled everything and learned more than they earned. Three years in Palm Springs that have brought more inspiration than anywhere else they've lived. Success is not linear. It never was.The Client Relationship... and When It EndsTed's rule: treat every client like it's the first time you've seen her. She is a different person. Jason goes deeper, describing 20 years of New York clients who didn't care what it cost, and how COVID ended it overnight. He had to create a new category... client friends. Losing them felt like grief. It changed how he understood his work entirely.Ted Gibson Beauty Wellness ScienceAfter Ted's mom was diagnosed with dementia, they dove into brain health and found lion's mane mushroom. They felt it. They kept going. A scientist in Oregon with 30 years studying fungi and algae helped them build a superfood powder: lion's mane, chaga, reishi, tremella, and blue-green algae in a coconut milk base with vanilla and coffee. Tremella is shown to be 100 times more effective than hyaluronic acid at moisture retention. Mix it into anything. A book is coming.Convergence: Beauty Wellness Science SummitMay 2-3 in Palm Springs. Send us Fan MailMost men chasing the writer's life have the same fantasy: quit the corporate world, escape to Paris, find the bohemian enclave where great work just happens. But that Paris doesn't exist anymore — and Zan would argue it never quite existed the way we imagine it.In this episode, Jordan presses Zan for an update on his next book (still no release date — sorry, you've been warned), and Zan opens up about the slow, painterly way he writes: six hours a day in the chair, no Substack dribbles, no early drafts shown to anyone. Then the conversation turns to a question many men in our audience are quietly wrestling with: how do you hold a creative life and a corporate life in the same body, without one suffocating the other? They move through the four archetypes of the would-be artist, the romance of place (Paris in the 20s, Brooklyn now, Bucharest, Bali), and the strange truth that even with the internet “democratising” creativity, most of us are working alone — without that gentle rivalry between Picasso and Matisse looking over each other's shoulders.Watch until the end for Zan's plans for a literary retreat in Venice this autumn, haunting the ghost of Casanova through the city that shaped him.

But here we have it: men owning their longing for relationship, and all the poetic wisdom that the longing itself contains. At the same time, more men than ever are voicing their discomfort with terms like “certainty” and “conviction”. These are classic ‘masculine qualities'. Sure, it's dicey to claim certainty and conviction over anything in today's world… but will any great love affair take off if both parties are restricted to yearning, and neither embodies a bit of conviction about their feelings?Today, Zan and Jordan explore this well-worn language used in today's ‘conscious' or ‘spiritual intimacy' circles. What if the conversations around your kitchen table are some of the most important moments in your homeschool? Zan and Meeke Addison, homeschool mom and cultural commentator, talk about raising children with discernment and faith in a noisy, media-saturated culture. They explore the role of parental influence, how everyday conversations shape a biblical worldview, and why shared meals create natural space for discipleship. Be encouraged to slow down, fight for meaningful connection, and intentionally disciple hearts through the conversations you're already having. In this NBN episode, host Hollay Ghadery speaks with Bänoo Zan and Cy Strom about their anthology, Woman Life Freedom: Poems for the Iranian Revolution (Guernica Editions, 2025). This international anthology marks a world-historical moment: the first ever feminist revolution. The slogan chanted by the demonstrators in Iran is Woman, Life, Freedom, and it encompasses hopes and ideals for all people everywhere. This anthology echoes that cry. The poems here might be reflections on the present moment, denunciations of injustice, examinations of the poet's own conscience, laments for the fallen, bitter curses, prayers, celebrations of life, and visions of a better future. Bänoo and Cy aim to raise awareness of the women's revolution in Iran and show the world that this cause is alive and will not be put down. About the editors:  Bänoo Zan is a poet, translator, essayist, and poetry curator, with numerous published pieces and three books. Songs of Exile was shortlisted for the Gerald Lampert Memorial Award. Letters to My Father was published in 2017. She is the founder of Shab-e She'r (Poetry Night), Canada's most diverse and brave poetry reading and open mic series (inception: 2012). Shab-e She'r bridges the gap between communities of poets from different ethnicities, nationalities, religions (or lack thereof), ages, genders, sexual orientations, abilities, poetic styles, voices, and visions. Bänoo calls herself a war correspondent in verse. Others describe her as a political, metaphysical, and spiritual poet. Cy Strom works as an editor. He holds MA and MPhil degrees in early modern European history and has published in academic and other areas, including the visual arts. He edits in different genres and sometimes languages, and has had a role in developing professional editorial standards and educational materials. Learn more about your ad choices.
