Afterward, we chat with Memphis native Amanda Davis, FOH (front of house) engineer for Janelle Monáe and Tegan and Sara. Amanda tells us about her first job as an audio engineer working at a church, to then working on a cruise ship, to getting a phone call from Janelle Monáe's tour and production manager informing her that Monáe wanted a female FOH, and the rest is history.

Today's dose of “Vitamin D” is dedicated to you declaring, “I got the juice.” Now there isn't exactly a definition of what the “juice” is, but I like to think of it as your power, your potential, your dopeness! And ain't nobody got what you got. Can't nobody do what it is that you do, when you do what you do, you feel me? So affirm that! You know, I'm a firm believer of speaking life and speaking life over your life and I need you to know that you got the juice. Janelle Monae, she has this track feat. Pharrell called, “I Got The Juice.” and in it, she sings, “you're so damn electric, you know you got that juice, ain't no one fresher than you” and I need you to catch that too. You dope as hell…just the way you are! Now, the only requirement is that you be brave enough to show up as you, unapologetically and stop looking and checking what everybody else is doing because there is only one of you. And when you're running your race, there can only be one winner…and that's you. “You're number one and don't you doubt it.” So the next time you get in the mirror, I need you to look at the reflection looking back at you and say, “I got the juice!” Now get out there and shine & be the star you were destined to be. That's it for your dose of "Vitamin D," be sure to follow me on all social media @DawnDaiSpeaks & until next time always remember, "you are your greatest asset." Liv.e - "Bout It," a 2021 single on In Real Life / AWAL. Dallas-born singer/songwriter Liv.e may have only just released her debut album Couldn't Wait to Tell You in 2020 but she's been quietly gaining traction underground since 2017, with marquee names like Janelle Monae, Earl Sweatshirt, and Tyler, The Creator singing her praises. And, listening to Couldn't Wait to Tell You, it's easy to see why. The 20-track record is hypnotic in its fusion of soul, jazz, and R&B with loose song structures that fade like dreams. Her latest single and KEXP's Song of the Day, “Bout It” continues that dreamy feeling with hazy downtempo production by Mndsgn that repeats the same spacey line over and over like an incantation and Liv.e following suit with the recurrent question of “Is you ‘bout it?” to spell-binding effect. If you weren't before, you certainly are about it now. Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The purpose of music is to elicit an emotional response and, in the words of Beyonce, "reflect the times". Part of that includes bringing attention to forms of oppression and injustice that people face and using music to not only bring awareness to these injustices, but also as a call to act and fight for change in society. In this episode,we will explore the ways in which artists of color have utilized their gifts to advocate for their communities and inspire others to raise their voice. I want to use this episode to examine the ways in which artists such as Tupac, Lauryn Hill, Common, Janelle Monae, Noname, and so many others have raised their voice against poverty, police brutality, and other injustices and not only made people aware of these issues, but inspired a whole generation of people to fight for change. This episode is about discussing how music not only connects us, but mobilizes us to push back against racial oppression. Here is this episodes playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/68IimiooZmeff6030hVO63?si=88ce32dc0e60461f________________________________________This Episode's Host: Chase LeitoJoin the KSFam! Well, we're certainly not pro-bellum. This week Mick from Behold! pod joins us again to look at a film that seems to have everything going for it: a pair of hotly-tipped debuting directors, a provocative, mind-bending premise, and a quality cast. Even more promisingly, that quality cast is headed up by Janelle Monae, who Graham cites as the only musician capable of filling the void left by Prince and David Bowie. And yet Antebellum received a tepid reaction on release, and Graham and Mick are here to figure out what went wrong. Among the suspects: its gorgeous but showy visual style, its absolute forehead-slapper of a twist and - the ultimate sin - not doing right by Janelle Monae, and what she means to the culture. Yet there's also room to talk about the film's positive elements, as well as an extended detour around the Wikipedia page for the short-lived 1970s band The Normal. For some reason. We can't possibly segue from that, so let's cut to the chase: we've got a Patreon, and if you donate to that Patreon you get loads of stuff including a monthly bonus episode of this very podcast - this month's is about Bubba Ho-Tep - our other movie podcast Director's Lottery, Graham's twice-weekly Doctor Who reviews, and more. Hernandez was born in 1976 in Brooklyn, New York. He is the son of Brooklyn native “Pete Hernandez”, who was the percussionist for Love & Money and Cecilio & Kapono. Eric started drumming at the tender age of 4 and playing professionally at the age of 10 in Hawaii. He played 6 nights a week for 8 years with “The Lovenote Show” a Variety show paying tribute to the music of the 50's, 60's and 70's. It was this unrelenting schedule that bred consistency in his playing and made him a master of all styles, be it soul, funk, reggae, rock and anything else the music demands of him. Daphne A. Brooks explores more than a century of music archives to examine the critics, collectors, and listeners who have determined perceptions of Black women on stage and in the recording studio. How is it possible, she asks, that iconic artists such as Aretha Franklin and Beyonc exist simultaneously at the center and on the fringe of the culture industry? Liner Notes for the Revolution offers a startling new perspective on these acclaimed figures--a perspective informed by the overlooked contributions of other Black women concerned with the work of their musical peers. Zora Neale Hurston appears as a sound archivist and a performer, Lorraine Hansberry as a queer Black feminist critic of modern culture, and Pauline Hopkins as America's first Black female cultural commentator. Brooks tackles the complicated racial politics of blues music recording, song collecting, and rock and roll criticism. She makes lyrical forays into the blues pioneers Bessie Smith and Mamie Smith, as well as fans who became critics, like the record-label entrepreneur and writer Rosetta Reitz. In the twenty-first century, pop superstar Janelle Monae's liner notes are recognized for their innovations, while celebrated singers C cile McLorin Salvant, Rhiannon Giddens, and Valerie June take their place as cultural historians. Brooks is in conversation with Lynell George, and also curated a companion playlist to Liner Notes, which you can listen to here:   https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5pPpJViwMlAjvxsMymDDWv?si=mTt4sXj9QqK6qHQtTixH7Q _______________________________________________   Produced by Maddie Gobbo, Lance Morgan, & Michael Kowaleski Theme: "I Love All My Friends," an unreleased demo by Fragile Gang. If you're lucky we might even dive into what Ewan McGregor has been saying about the Obi-Wan series, or even Frances McDormand and Denzel Washington's Macbeth. From Philadelphia Cream Cheese #spon that implies you need couples therapy to Natasha Bedingfield's "dump truck ass", today's Who? Weekly is going to make you yell, "WHO IS HENRY CAVILL'S MYSTERY GIRLFRIEND?!!" Here's a hint: She's NOT Danielle Beausoleil, no matter what The Sun claims. Moreover, Nick Cannon's having twins (again) and that's not even the weirdest part, JoJo Siwa wears herself on a sweatshirt in People, Kendra Wilkinson and Holly Madison keep their feud alive (while Patrick Schwarzenegger and Elijah Wood start one), Janelle Monae gets pap'd on a yacht and January Jones bludgeons 2 rattlesnakes. TWO. As always, call 619.WHO.THEM to leave questions comments and concerns and we may play your call on a future episode! And for a ton of bonus content, head to Patreon.com/WhoWeekly. First up is Law Roach, the image architect, a costume designer, and a judge on HBO Max’s Legendary. Law talks about his work for Zendaya—who he’s been styling since she was 14—Celine Dion’s fashion transformation of 2016, and his best tips for buying vintage. Then, designer Sergio Hudson takes us behind the scenes of his creative process in dressing women like Michelle Obama and Vice President Kamala Harris, who both wore his designs at the 2021 presidential inauguration. Plus, his best advice for creating the perfect ’fit and his thoughts on how the pandemic has forever changed the fashion industry.
