In this episode, we'll delve into the Chicago Public Schools evolving sex education curriculum. We'll share findings from our Adolescent X research study, and we'll identify the gaps within sex ed that have yet to be filled, like queer and disabled sex. We'll hear from Sonam Rikha and our co-host, Kaya Thomas, about their experiences learning about sex within the CPS system, as well as from sex educators Eva Sweeney and Angela Townsend, who created spaces outside of school systems to fill those gaps. Frankly. is a podcast that explores the health and wellbeing of youth from the perspectives and lived experiences of young people on Chicago's South and West sides. Co-produced by Chicago youth Kaya Thomas and Alizha Vernon and the University of Chicago's Center for Interdisciplinary Inquiry and Innovation in Sexual and Reproductive Health, Frankly. is a seven-episode series that builds on the findings from Ci3's Adolescent X study, a research project that studies narrative methods to explore the messages that young people receive about their bodies, identities, and sexual health. Frankly. centers the voices of young people marginalized by race, gender, and/or sexual orientation as they navigate various social environments, develop their identities, and understand the world around them. Frankly. aims to contextualize the stories of young people by examining the ways in which structural barriers and institutions impede their health and wellbeing. Discussing all things disability access with someone who has made it their life's work to go beyond the minimal sexual safety sex-ed and demand pleasure for all bodies. Eva Sweeney is a 37-year-old genderqueer disabled female who works primarily as a sex educator and freelance writer. Her topics include disabilities and sex, gender, and queer culture. She has been doing sex and disability workshops for over 15 years and started doing this work because she found a huge lack of good sex-positive information for people with disabilities. In this episode of Uncomfortable, Debbie chats with Eva Sweeney, creator of Cripping Up Sex with Eva. Eva is a genderqueer disabled female who works primarily as a sex educator and freelance writer. Eva started doing this work when she was a teen and realized that there was no information on how to integrate her sexuality with her disability. About Eva Through her platform Cripping Up Sex With Eva, Eva Sweeney gives classes about sex and disability, topics that are not talked about nearly enough in our society. As a queer teen with cerebral palsy, Eva could not find adequate information about integrating her sexuality with her disability–so she created the information herself. She now has over 15 years of experience giving workshops all over the country about sex and disability. Through Cripping Up Sex With Eva, she continues to do workshops both in-person and online and she has an online store with pre-recorded classes. Additionally, she has two blogs: Cripping Up Reviews, where she reviews sex toys through an accessible lens, and Crip Q’s where she answers anonymous questions about sex and disability. As always we hope you enjoy this conversation but given the subject, there is some adult content, so make sure to pop your headphones on! About this episode... Miss Laura and Monkey are super excited to meet today with Eva Sweeney. Before we start we have a couple of notes to go over with you. First, this episode may have some longer pauses due to the communication styles - just be patient dear listeners - we promise it is worth it. Second, this interview is recorded over a speakerphone to accommodate Eva's needs so it may be a bit noisier than you are used to - again - it is still worth it! We did some things in the audio edit to minimize this but it still happens! And now, on to the show… Eva Sweeney is a gender queer disabled person who works as a sex educator and freelance writer. She writes a lot on topics around sex, disability, and queer culture. She is joined by her assistant, Cameron who voices for Eva. Eva would like people to know she is just a normal person and is not at all inspirational just for getting out of bed. Eva has cerebral palsy, which for her means she uses a wheelchair to get around and she speaks by using a laser pointer mounted to her head and a letter board. This board is read by whoever she is speaking to or her aide. She needs assistance with almost all physical functions. She is in control of her life - she just needs a little help. For this interview, she pre-wrote out the answers to many of the questions. For any follow-up questions, you will hear her aide help her as she uses the board to respond. Eva shares her ideas on maintaining a positive body image - and discusses how she does not conform to the "mainstream" and responds with "Fuck that - I am hot!". She is overflowing with self-confidence. As far as advice to people on maintaining a positive body image - Eva says "Just be yourself and don't give a fuck what other people think of you." One final message from Eva - "Just stay open minded." About Eva Sweeney Eva Sweeney is a 35-year-old genderqueer disabled female who works primarily as a sex educator and freelance writer. Her topics include disabilities and sex, gender, and queer culture. She is also the creator of the documentary, Respect: The Joy of Aides. She has been doing Sex and Disability workshops for 15 years and started doing this work because she found a huge lack of good sex positive information for people with disabilities. Eva wrote the book Queers on Wheels and has traveled the country giving workshops about Sex and Disability. She is also available for private consultations.Where to Find Eva... In this episode Eva Sweeney, filmmaker and consultant for ABC's Speechless - as well as author, activist, AAC user, and overall dynamo - talks with Rachel and Lucas about her AAC device, the importance of aides (and giving them breaks), her work as an activist on sexuality in the disability community, and more. Meanwhile, Lucas briefly flies solo to talk about the importance of a whole-person approach to AAC assessment and intervention - and our work generally.
