Frustration follows flaws! Can you create tension and conflict if the 4 Story questions haven't been answered? The simple answer is “no”. I desperately wanted to love this movie because I'm writing a short story based on selkies. This is a sweet movie. It lacks some storytelling basics, which results in minimal tension and conflict. I know I've said it before, but learning from stories that don't work is more valuable when you're learning to write. -M"Conflict relies on tension to make readers want to know what happens." Todd McCaffrey was born to Anne McCaffrey on April 27th, 1956. The then-named Todd Johnson came into the world as a rather precocious middle child. Anyone who questions the precocious part has only to read some of the anecdotes in “Dragonholder” to have any doubt removed. He spent most of his childhood on the East Coast of the USA until moving to Dublin, Ireland with his mother and sister in 1970. Like most of the boys growing up in the '60s, McCaffrey became space mad. However, unlike most of the other young men running around their yards in pretend helmets and throwing toy rockets into the air, he was given a “complete” set of the actual Lunar Module Pilot Study Guides in 1968. The number of hours spent devouring them repeatedly from cover to cover is evident in the fact that he has been known to quote excerpts from them during convention panels. When the time came for him to pursue higher education, McCaffrey attended Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, for a year—and hated it. But he did discover one of the great loves of his life while he was there, computers. He graduated with Honors—or rather, “Honours”—in 1985 from Trinity College, Dublin. Having never lost his love for space, he left Ireland for Los Angeles, California, in the hopes of working in the aerospace Find out more at: pernhome.com/tjm/ STEVEN L. Heute steht Nina Brunetto mit uns an der Haltestelle. Close your eyes. Imagine standing on land that your family has held for generations. The waters that trickle nearby sing your family name, and your ancestors are there with you, buried deep in the earth. Now, imagine a stranger coming along and violating this land with no regard to the lineage it carries. This is the story at the heart of our latest Sonic Journey. We're sharing the story of the Fukumitsu family who is protecting their land -- their ‘āina -- through the Emmy Award-winning film “Pili Ka Moʻo” by Justyn Ah Chong with Malia Akutagawa (both Kanaka Maoli.) “Pili Ka Moʻo” is a part of the first season of our sibling initiative Reciprocity Project. This is also the film that inspired Seedcast producer Stina Hamlin to embark on our whole Sonic Journey Series, and we understand why: this film not only includes the strong voices of the Fukumitsu family and their ancestors, but it also includes beautiful sounds from their kalo, or taro, fields and the collective voice of a community standing up for the land and their ancestors. Justyn's film is part of Reciprocity Project, a collaboration between Nia Tero and Upstander Project, in association with REI Co-op Studios. Host and Story Editor: Jessica Ramirez. Traditionally, education has been seen as instilling the common shared civic values that Americans have held for since the nation’s founding. As the educational establishment has become increasingly more progressive, many states have begun to offer alternatives to traditional public-school education, particularly in the wake of the Covid pandemic when many schools were shut down. This has included laws that allow for educational savings accounts, charter schools, and home-schooling. However, these proposals have met fierce opposition from the educational establishment, legislatures, and education unions. At the heart of this opposition is access to funding and the degree to which parents have the right to make educational decisions for their children. Will education choice laws restore balance to American education? How does this battle affect the trust in America’s educational system? Are there proposals that all sides agree upon that can restore a sense of shared civic values? How do these battles affect local school board races and what does that mean for representative government? Panelists will answer these questions as well as address some of the key educational questions affecting the Western States.Featuring:Hon. Clint Bolick Moderator, Justice, Arizona Supreme CourtCara Fitzpatrick, Story Editor, Chalkbeat NationalTim Keller, Executive Director, The Institute for Justice Arizona ChapterErin Valdez, Policy Director, Next Generation Texas
In our latest Sonic Journey, join us on the lands of the Shinnecock Nation, which have been cared for by the Shinnecock People for over 10,000 years. Here, photographer and artist Jeremy Dennis has restored his family's home in order to create a place for creativity, care, and community for a new generation of BIPOC artists. This unique space is called Ma's House, and Jeremy documented the building's restoration in a short film of the same name. Lean closer and listen to fond remembrances of Ma from her descendants. Anyway, please try again now. Seems to be working properly following a reload) Once again, it's time to share a few highlights from the past year of Something Who as we bring you a compilation from our episodes in 2023. And there's a lot to choose from. In addition to our regular presenting team of Richard, Paul, Giles and Simon, we had a lot of guests this year, including Tim Burrows from The Missing Episodes podcast on our 10th anniversary discussion of the Omnirumour. We chatted to an actual Doctor Who writer in Matthew Jacobs, along with Vanessa Yuille, who together made the wonderful fan film Doctor Who Am I? Both Matthew and Vanessa were almost upstaged by a pneumatic drill, but saw the funny side. We spoke with Steve Manfred about his friendship and collaboration with writer Neil Gaiman. Elizabeth Morton spoke with us about her family connections to Doctor Who, as well as her writing career. And Benjamin Cook, Rich Tipple and Timothy K Brown discussed their work on colourising the first Dalek story for the 60th anniversary. Simon Guerrier joined us to chat about The Rescue and The Eleventh Hour, while providing lots of insight from his research into writer and story editor David Whitaker. We hope you enjoy these clips and, if you do, please peruse our back catalogue for the full versions of all of these items and perhaps you'd like to leave us a review on Apple Podcasts or similar platform. The opening music is Three Guitars Mood 2 and, yes, that is Richard playing the ukulele and kazoo on possibly the worst ever version of the Doctor Who theme tune at the end. Jeff Schimmel began his Writing/Producing career in the 1980s while attending law school in Los Angeles. When not studying for the bar exam, Jeff wrote and sold his original Cold War spy thriller, Archangel, to Phoenix Entertainment Group. Soon after, Jeff was chosen by comedy legend Rodney Dangerfield and award-winning Writer/Director Harold Ramis to co-write the full-length Warner Brothers animated film, Rover Dangerfield. This led to a sports comedy screenplay assignment from Orion Pictures and 20th Century Fox, and Jeff's first TV writing job as Story Editor on ABC's top ten sitcoms, Full House.Next, Jeff co-wrote and produced The Schimmel Papers, a series of several short films for Fox TV's Sunday Comics, then went on to write for the groundbreaking, Emmy Award-winning sketch comedy series, In Living Color, worked as Story Editor on the WB network's first-ever sitcom, then served as Writer and Producer on Laughing With The Presidents, NBC TV's final comedy special starring Bob Hope, with appearances by Presidents George Bush and Bill Clinton, actors Tom Selleck, Don Johnson, Tony Danza, Ann-Margret, Naomi Judd, and many more.In 2016, Jeff took over as Executive Producer of Fuse network's music intensive Skee TV series, working with hip hop artists like Snoop Dogg, Tyler the Creator, Post Malone, and T.I. Also in the rap world, Jeff was credited as a producer on three multi-platinum selling CDs by Busta Rhymes. In 2017, Jeff's book, “Maximum Screenwriting,” was released and has earned Amazon's five-star rating. Jeff has appeared as a guest lecturer at L.A.'s famed Screenwriting Expo, is a popular speaker at prestigious universities and film schools, and has worked closely with the Writers Guild of America to protect the best interests of writers.25 COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS AND STRAIGHT ANSWERSThe entertainment industry is the toughest business around. To achieve success as a professional screenwriter, you will need every advantage you can get. A writer who faces readers, agents, producers, and creative executives are no different than a soldier going into combat. To have the best chance of survival, both would be wise to bring every weapon they can carry into the fight. This book is ammunition for the battles every screenwriter will face as it teaches: How to create a bulletproof outline, How to build and breathe life into compelling characters, How to defeat crippling procrastination, How to avoid being ripped off, and How to deal with a myriad of situations other books never mention. The one thing this book will not do is tell you what the proper margins are for a screenplay, where to place a parenthetical in dialogue or what is supposed to happen on page 30. There are dozens of books and free online lectures for that. Maximum Screenwriting was written for one reason only: to teach you what other books don't and to tell you what other writers won't.Enjoy my conversation with Jeff Schimmel. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/2664729/advertisement

Haley Kennington joins this episode of The Jeff Dornik Show. She recently wrote an in depth article detailing the overly sexualized books in public school libraries and how parents are being forced to take on a monster of the system in order to protect their children from these obscenities. The reality is that we need to revisit the obscenity laws currently in America, as they only protect children from photos and video of actual pornography, but don't protect them from animation or drawings of sex acts. We need to put pressure on our legislators to codify protections from this form of pornography that's found it's way into our schools and libraries. Kennington was the Research and Archive Editor for The Daily Wire's documentary What is a Woman, starring Matt Walsh. She was also the Research Director and Story Editor for The Plot Against the President. She's currently the News Editor for Wrong Speak Publishing. Sometimes we bury the lede in the title so let's rectify that straightaway: featuring special guest Melinda Snodgrass! We've never been shy about our obligatory Star Trek references and as we've undertaken our long, strange trip through Asimov's Robot Novels and some related short stories, those references skewed sharply in the direction of The Measure of a Man, which is in my opinion "the moment when The Next Generation earned the right to call itself Star Trek." It's great TV and great SF and a monument to themes and ideas that Asimov championed throughout his career. So for this episode, we going to treat you to an episode-long Star Trek reference as we're joined by the author of The Measure of a Man, the aforementioned Melinda Snodgrass! Please excuse us, we're all a bit starstruck. In addition to writing the quintessential Data episode for TNG, Melinda Is a lifelong Science Fiction fan who has written many novels including the Circuit series, co-created the Wild Cards series of books, and has extensive screenwriting credits including L. A. Law, Sliders, and The Outer Limits. Within the realm of Star Trek, Melinda has written Tears of the Singers, a TOS novel, and five episodes of TNG, which also include a second Data-Centric episode, The Ensigns of Command. She was the Story Editor on Next Generation while the show transformed from a program struggling to find its voice into the science fiction juggernaut we all know and love. As Jon puts it, this episode “slaps!” You do not want to miss this one! Let's go!

Cyclops is Waiting for Me - An X-Men: The Animated Series Weekly Recap
Not as remembered by most as the Night of the Sentinels pilot, Graduation Day will forever have a special place in the hearts of JC and Rod as they are joined by Eric and Julia Lewald. Eric was Story Editor (what we'd now call the Show Runner) for all 76 episodes and writer of the series finale and Julia was the writer on a number of the episodes herself. Without their massive efforts throughout this series, X-Men: TAS could have been just another nostalgic moment but instead became one of the most iconic cartoons to 90s kids ever. Possibly our longest episode ever, there was just nothing we wanted to leave on the cutting room floor with the amazing stories and insight Eric and Julia shared with us. They share the experience writing the third (and final) finale of their run with this iconic series and we'd be lying if we didn't admit we were getting choked up through the episode. We'll let you listen for yourselves but just want to again thank Eric and Julia for the time they gave us to do this episode and for bringing this X-Men story to life. One quick note: As Rod mentions at the end of this episode, this is NOT the finale for our podcast as new episodes are coming in the future weeks of another X-Men animated show. Karen Graci is a story editor working on an animated TV show at Disney Television Animation. As the story editor, she's the head of the writing department where she oversees the writers' room, plus she works with the showrunners. In addition to editing, Karen also is actively writing. People often think of "grammar, punctuation, and spelling" when it comes to being an editor, but Karen gets to use her editing skills in such a creative, fun environment. Karen is currently working on an animated comedy-adventure series called "Hailey's On It!" that is out in June 2023 and that she got hired to begin in early 2021. This show is about Hailey, a risk-averse but resourceful teenager, who must finish her long list of challenging (and sometimes impractical) tasks to save the world. She works with incredibly talented and skilled people, such as the showrunners, other writers, animators, and voice actors. One awesome part of her job is that she gets to sit in on the live reads and recordings, meaning that she's there when Auli'i Cravalho (who was Moana!!) voices the main character, Hailey, and Manny Jacinto (who was incredible in The Good Place) voices Scott, the main male character and Hailey's best friend.Karen took an untraditional path to her cool job, including majoring in international relations and touring with Chicago's famed Second City National Touring Company as a professional improviser. Here are today's: As storytellers, we already know that curiosity is critical. But are you as curious as you can be? When Sam first started looking into this old story, he discovered that reporters had only skimmed the surface. Sam was driven by a need to understand how this situation could have happened. He began asking questions like what was their childhood like? What would drive two young men to do something like this?Trust your instincts. If you think there's more to a story than meets the eye, you're probably right. Sam trusted his when he said, “There has to be much more here than they were just jerks messing with us.” And there was.Working with a good editor is a godsend - it can mean the difference between a memorable story or series and one that falls flat. But, as Sam says, the relationship with an editor is a scary one, because it's so intimate. You have to earn each other's trust and be completely honest with each other. The creative work you do without recognition or outward signs of success is never wasted. I'm a sucker for an overnight success story – which is what Sam's story initially sounded like. But I'm also a sucker for most people's real overnight success stories – which is that good fortune isn't sudden at all; it's the outcome of years of building skills.Links mentioned in this episode:Sound Judgment Ep 14: Bone Valley: How to Create a True Crime Podcast That Makes a Difference***Bring lessons on hosting and producing into your inbox! We're doing something different on this episode. Jodi and I interview each other – and discover some real similarities and big differences between voice acting & hosting. One of the biggest similarities: As hosts and voice actors, we need to communicate emotion authentically. That's where the joy and the success lies – and where many of the problems do, too. Parts 1 and 2 of this conversation with Jodi Krangle are running on Sound Judgment and also on Audio Branding. Thanks to Audio Branding editor Humberto Franco for doing beautiful work in audio and video. Sound needs to change as culture changes. Remember the old movie trailers with The Voice of God? We don't hear those much any more, and for a good reason. Younger generations experience sound in a very different way – they want to be shown what's will be on the movie screen, for instance, not told to. They do not want to be sold to at all. So if we're not hearing the Voice of God from voice actors any more, we're also not wanting that newscaster, anchor voice – the Walter Cronkite voice – in journalism and podcasting, either. 2. Emotional context is what sound does for us.I was surprised to hear Jodi say, when she's recording a commercial, for instance – “If I don't have a movie or play going on in my head, it's hard for the person listening to understand the emotion that's coming across.” Storytellers, when you're using a script, this is key to avoiding sounding like you're reading. We need to embody what we're saying. 3. Hosting is strategic. We need to start treating it that way. In the advertising industry, directors often make the mistake of tacking on voiceover at the end of a production, rather than thinking about it strategically from the beginning. Many folks in Jodi's industry mistakenly believe voice acting is just standing at a mic and talking. That's my pet peeve as well. We should be thinking about hosting – and creating an intentional sound for our shows – at the beginning of the process, not throwing in a voice at the end. Hosting well is how you engage listeners, and hosting poorly can lose them. Tune in next week for Part 2, a bonus episode. Credits Sound Judgment is a production of Podcast Allies, LLC. Listeners to Sound Judgment know I'm on a quest to unpack how today's best hosts make their magic — and to define the universal skills and qualities of “hostiness.” What makes some hosts stars, while we don't remember the rest? Today, we name and explore the first of these universal skills: #1: Sparkling, Attention-Grabbing IntrosCompelling hosts know how to grab and hold listeners' attention from the very first seconds of an episode. A great intro, also called a "lede," relies on the elements of: — Surprise— Curiosity— Scene setting— For interview and conversation shows, stating your purposeWe explore how three hosts, of two narrative podcasts and one interview show, use these elements in dramatically different ways to create remarkably effective ledes.(Please note: This episode includes the sounds of guns and a brief discussion of some tough topics, including suicide, during my exploration of Stephanie Wittels Wachs' lede into the Last Day episode, “A Love Story.” The third season of Last Day is about guns. If you're a host or producer thinking about the tenth anniversary of the Sandy Hook school shooting yesterday, and how to report movingly and sensitively about guns, Last Day is a model of how to do this beautifully and ethically.)
