Following David’s life journey from a shepherd boy to becoming King of Israel. The Bible calls him a man after God's own heart. But his story is not your typical storybook life. We learn from David what success really means, but also how to deal with moments of failure - learning from his life, for my life.

What makes racist feelings and ideas objectionable? In his book Internal Racism: A Psychoanalytic Approach to Race and Difference (Red Globe, 2011), M. Fakhry Davids, a member of the British Psychoanalytical Society, argues that racism, like the impulse to destroy or act on hatred, is an ineluctable part of us all. Borrowing, but also augmenting the work of his fellow neo-Kleinians (particularly John Steiner and Herbert Rosenfeld) on “psychic retreats” and “defensive organizations”, he names the “internal racist organization” as a normal part of the mind, deeming it a non-pathological component of psychic structure. David’s thinking has a decidedly hopeful tinge. If accepted, it promises to help open up the kinds of conversations clinically and otherwise that can be had about racist feelings. After all, if they are average and expectable, they are human. And what is accepted as human can potentially be talked through and about, which promises to constrain harmful action. What I love about David’s thinking is that in updating a psychoanalytic model of mind that accounts for racism, he wipes political correctness and the super ego off the table. By placing the “internal racist organization” as an equal player inside of us, alongside the Oedipal, the ego and the id, it becomes something that you just can’t wish away. That said, if we accept his argument, we do find ourselves contending with the age old problem of the drives, or the paranoid schizoid, wherein managing ourselves in relation to the lure of destructiveness (of which racist feelings play their part) is a life long project. The hope is that if we can come to accept racist thinking as a response to overwhelming and primitive anxieties, (rather than a moral failing), we can see it as a warning sign that internally we are askew. Following David’s, racism can never be expunged (as seems to be the neoliberal fantasy) from the self. In fact, and truly this is the last word, it follows us to the grave. Tracy D. Following David's victory over Goliath, and then his further success in military exploits, it is now very apparent that the Lord is with David in a remarkable way. This, however, attracts the hostility of Saul. David has been trained in dealing with lions and bears when defending the sheep out in the fields, Now he has to learn to deal with people. David had great promises which the Lord has given to him. But there are tests to be undergone before those promises will take real effect. He is being prepared for the day when he will ascend to power. He will have to learn obedience through what he suffers. In this way David is a type of Christ, showing us things in his life that will come true, in a bigger and more significant sense, in the life of the Lord Jesus. David has to prevail, like the Lord will have to, despite the wrongs and unjust hostility He faces.--1- Saul's Hatred-2- Hostility Brings Pressure
The `Books Are A Blessing` series continues this week with excerpts from the Art of Following - David, including: the art of following David is the art of knowing that not everyone will accept you the art of following David is the art of not accepting something that you have not tested
1Sam. 30:1-8 NOW WHEN David and his men came home to Ziklag on the third day, they found that the Amalekites had made a raid on the South (the Negeb) and on Ziklag, and had struck Ziklag and burned it with fire, And had taken the women and all who were there, both great and small, captive. They killed no one, but carried them off and went on their way. So David and his men came to the town, and behold, it was burned, and their wives and sons and daughters were taken captive. Then David and the men with him lifted up their voices and wept until they had no more strength to weep. David’s two wives also had been taken captive, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess and Abigail, the widow of Nabal the Carmelite. David was greatly distressed, for the men spoke of stoning him because the souls of them all were bitterly grieved, each man for his sons and daughters. But David encouraged and strengthened himself in the Lord his God. Then David said to the priest Abiathar son of Ahimelech, “Bring me the ephod.” So Abiathar brought the ephod to David. And David inquired of the Lord, saying, Shall I pursue this band of raiders? Shall I overtake them? The Lord answered him, PURSE, for you shall surely overtake them and without fail RECOVER ALL. When the eternal arch enemies of GOD raid His people’s communities, rob their possessions, and enslave their families, GOD has a plan for them to RECOVER ALL...PURSUE! ----more---- But when the Amalekites invaded and captured David’s entire society his men were crushed into defeat. Following David as GOD’s anointed King, provoked the Amalekite raid against their families. Getting rid of David was exactly what the Amalekites wanted. TODAY, our communities are being invaded, and overrun by the Amalekites—the GOD-hating unrelenting enemies of His K’dom. They have overrun our government and are ripping every shred of our historic biblical culture from our society. They have raided our schools and carried off our children. And just as David’s men blamed and turned against their Charismatic leader, many churches today are turning against Conservative Christians, blaming them for angering the godless progressives. And the Church is so traumatized by its loss of influence, that most have conceded to defeat. The Church has changed it’s prayer from, “Your K’dom Come, You’re Will Be Done In Earth…” to, “Que Sera, Sera” Jesus’ has given us a Royal Order: “Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on EARTH as it is in Heaven. But the victories of the Amalekites have diluted our DESIRE to PRESS that Mandate and PURSUE. We’ve let Escape Theology talk us out of our K’dom Come Mandate. We’ve modified it into, “The earth rejected Your Kingdom, but Your will is still done in Heaven, so come get me.” But Jesus didn’t come to Earth to confiscate its people for a Heaven Repopulation Program! We should REPENT for giving up this world for Heaven, when GOD created us to Rule and Have Dominion on Earth, AS IT IS IN HEAVEN! JESUS didn’t say, Watch the Signs till I come. He said, labor and occupy till I come! Stop saying The Rapture’s Coming! I see the signs! It’s still an evil and adulterous generation that seeks signs. Why are you looking for signs of Heaven’s Rescue Choppers when we’re the Sign that Heaven’s watching. When will WE preach the K’dom to every nation? Bring Me The Ephod! It’s time for us to rise with Kingdom-minded Authority and be militantly aggressive and PRESS our Intercessory Mandate! STOP believing the struggle ends with an Amalekite victory!! Be Converted to K’dom Consciousness, rather than Convinced by Amalekite Culture! Nothing outside you is stronger than the K’dom inside you! 1Jn 4:4 Put on the Ephod of of your calling and ENCOURAGE YOURSELF IN GOD! We’re talking about GOD who drove a million Midianite invaders from Israel using Gideon and 300 shouting men with flashlights. Have you forgotten that when a 3-Nation Axis of evil invaded Israel, He that’s IN YOU wiped them all out with a Praise Team?! Before you surrender America to the Amalekites, remember that GOD empowered Samson to slay a thousand Philistines with the jawbone of an ass. So imagine what He could do with YOU! Before you accept a godless marxist takeover of America remember that our GOD turned around the entire godless city of Nineveh with one message from a reluctant prophet! The entire city fasted and repented, from the King down to the pets! The Gift Of Disturbance GOD wants to send you the Gift of Disturbance to rescue your faith. Nothing changes till GOD’s people trade the Comfort of Sermons for being Greatly Distressed…David was greatly distressed. GOD produced the great Prophet Samuel to lead Israel to drive the Amalekites (and others) from their land. And this is how GOD produced him… 1Sam. 1:7, 10 So it was year after year; whenever Hannah went up to the Lord’s house, Peninnah provoked her, so she wept and did not eat. And [Hannah] was in distress of soul, praying to the Lord and weeping bitterly. She vowed, saying, O Lord of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your handmaid and [earnestly] remember, and not forget Your handmaid but will give me a son, I will give him to the Lord all his life… Samuels are forged by the pressure of Distressing Desire that will not be consoled by anything less. The Church that finds the theft of our children and destruction of our Biblical heritage intolerable, Refuses to accept an Amalekite victory, And with a fierce grieving spirit, takes up the ephod of Kingdom Mandate, And seeks GOD’s face for His Answer, That Church will hear GOD say, Arise, Pursue, and Recover All!

On October 3, 2019, the CCPA-BC and UBC's Vancouver School of Economics were pleased to present the 2019 Gideon Rosenbluth Memorial Lecture. In an era of high inequality, continuing poverty, homelessness and housing issues, and concerns about the impact of new technologies on work, there is an appetite for considering radical policy shifts. In that context, a basic income has received a lot of attention across the policy discussion spectrum. It has been promoted as a policy tool that can help eliminate poverty, and which can also play a central role in restructuring society and the role of labour within it. The question this lecture considers is, “Is it the right policy for BC now?” David Green—a member of the BC government’s panel looking into a basic income—provides background on trends in the economy that are related to the call for a basic income, and describes the different forms a basic income could take, specify potential goals for it, and describe some of the cost and other practicalities. Following David’s talk members of different local communities share what a basic income in BC could mean — both its potential and its problems. Participants include: - Margot Young (Allard School of Law at UBC) - Chuka Ejeckam (BC Federation of Labour) - Trish Garner (BC Poverty Coalition)
