Harry Soo calls himself an “accidental pitmaster,” a self-proclaimed IT nerd who cooked his first BBQ contest only at the urging of co-workers. What a ride it's been, as Harry went on to become a competition BBQ champion and a hero to many pitmasters - amateur and pro - with his vast knowledge via a large Youtube following. It was tremendous to welcome Harry for an extended conversation on Episode 123 of the Tailgate Guys BBQ Show Podcast. Not only did we discuss BBQ techniques, but Harry tells us about some of his incredible adventures, including cooking a Musk Ox Steak under the Northern Lights of Alaska. For Harry, BBQ is not about the trophies, it's about the experiences and memories - and helping others improve their BBQ game. Ever heard of Brisket Sushi? Harry tells us about his newest creation. Co-hosts Steve and Lyndal also discuss their BBQ week, highlighted by Steve's beef ribs cook. Meanwhile, Lyndal previews the Tailgate Guys' dive into a KCBS doubleheader this weekend in Osceola, Missouri. Thanks to our sponsor/marketing partners who make our show possible: Blues Hog BBQ Sauce, Royal Oak Charcoal, The Butcher Shoppe, Iowa BBQ Store, Affordable Income Tax & Payroll, DDR Fabrication, Arkassippi Smoke Live and The Arkassippi Combo, Vietti Marketing, In the Garden of Eden and The BBQ League. I was just saying last time how quiet things were in terms of Meghan and Harry lives and then out of the blue came the news that Random House will be publishing Harry's memoir, with the anticipated release date of the book in late 2022  - just in time for Christmas. It seem that Harry and the publishers did not intend to release news of the book just yet. The announcement appears to have been forced upon them after The New York Post got wind of the project. The book has already caused a stir,  with some newspapers reporting that this is Harry's chance to tell his side of the story, and others already accusing Harry of preparing to drop more bombshells that will embarrass the UK Royal Family. For Harry's part he released a news story through his and Meghan's Archewell website under a heading "Prince Harry to Author Book Reflecting on Lessons Learned Throughout His Life." Alongside a description of his book is a statement from Harry in which he says  “I'm writing this not as the prince I was born but as the man I have become. I've worn many hats over the years, both literally and figuratively, and my hope is that in telling my story—the highs and lows, the mistakes, the lessons learned—I can help show that no matter where we come from, we have more in common than we think. I'm deeply grateful for the opportunity to share what I've learned over the course of my life so far and excited for people to read a firsthand account of my life that's accurate and wholly truthful.”The press releases did not say that Harry has written the book himself. Some news outlets are reporting that Harry is getting some help from J R Moehringer, a Pulitzer-winning former journalist with the LA Times and now author. This has not been confirmed nor denied at this time.Harry is taking heat for seemingly wanting to have privacy in his life but then being willing to tell us lots of intimate details. One Royal commentator, already fearing that Harry will release more bombshells in his book, has labelled Harry a traitor to the monarchy and to his family. How intimate the book will be remains to be seen. What we do know is that between now and when the book is released the press will have a field day speculating about what will or won't be in the book. And once it is published, every little bit of it will be micro-analysed. It was good to hear proceeds from the book will be donated to charity. The press releases did not say that all of the proceeds will go to charity. However, even if only a fraction of the proceeds are donated, it is sure to net a tidy sum that non-profits and charities around the world so desperately need.Don't forget to subscribe to this podcast  and you can read other stories and reach out to me though my blog at https://www.kindthoughtsformeghanmarkle.com/

How and Why to Fire Bad Clients (Ep. 37 Part 2/7)

Is your dad's brand still up? Is he still working? Harry Uy's dad is still very much active in the photography business. This is because his father's brand is his name. As long as people know that he still provides these services, he will always get clients. His only problem was his rates. Were there any clients of his that transitioned to you? How did you handle that? Those that successfully transitioned to become Harry's clients were mainly the children of his father's clients. His father's actual clients can't transition to Harry mainly because Reality Box is fairly more expensive. Expectations can also have a huge influence. Bear in mind that Photography is a tricky service and product. Part of it is the coverage of the event, and the main product is in the form of photographs. Some clients of Harry's father don't appreciate the process—oftentimes focusing more on the value of the raw material instead of the practice. How do you fire your clients? A good thing about the service industry is that they work based on a calendar. Clients will have to book them for a specific date. Harry's way of firing a client is to pose as being booked for specific dates. Whatever date that particular client chose, Harry will say that they're unavailable. This stems from his past experiences of working with these clients. When he sees that that client doesn't understand the worth of their services, they will not hesitate to fire them. Another approach that Harry uses is termed as “presyong ayaw”. Basically, it means they give a quote that is too expensive for that client. This way, the rejection will not come from Harry but from the client themselves. Were the clients that came from your father a big part of your journey in a growing reality box? The clients that transitioned from Harry's father didn't have a big influence in the growth of Reality Box. Most of them have already been accustomed to lowballing prices and over expecting service. For Harry, word of mouth was still the most effective marketing and referral tool. His first few clients were his friends which then referred them to other people. Like what Jack Ma said, most of your clients are strangers who just trusted you. In Harry's case, the strangers were his friends who trusted him enough to risk paying for their services even without seeing a portfolio. In fact, to get their own portfolio, Harry had to hitch on his father's wedding shoots and prenup shoots for free. They used that opportunity to collect as much as they could and make their own portfolio. Harry will never forget the first couple who paid them for their services because initially, they didn't have any kind of portfolio. Support the show (https://tribe.leadershipstack.com/)

This week we spoke to Dr Danny Penman. For Harry, this was quite a poignant interview as in his first session with his pschologist he was given a book called Finding peace in a Frantic World by Danny, which he credits as helping change his life and alter ingrained negative habits. Since then he has also read Mindfulness for Health and the Art of Breathing which are equally fascinating and helpful- with Mindfulness for health receiving recognition as the best book in popular medicine by the British Medical Associtation. Our chat with Danny encompasses a range of topics including how a life-changing paragliding accident lead him to mindfulness. We would really urge you to read Danny's book and explore his work. Continuing our Harry Potter theme, let’s explore how to deal with dementors in your life.   Recall that dementors are big, ugly, wraith-like creatures that feed on and suck all the happiness out of you. And, if they’re feeling really feisty, they’ll give you a kiss that sucks your soul right out of you. (Yikes!)    Also recall that there’s a special way to deal with these foul creatures. It’s called the Patronus Charm.    Here’s how Professor Lupin describes it to Harry in The Prisoner of Azkaban: “The Patronus is a kind of positive force, a projection of the very things that the dementor feeds upon — hope, happiness, the desire to survive — but it cannot feel despair, as real humans can, so the dementors can’t hurt it. But I must warn you, Harry, that the charm might be too advanced for you. Many qualified wizards have difficulty with it.”   Harry wonders what the Patronus looks like and Lupin tells him that “each one is unique to the wizard who conjures it.”   How do you conjure it? Well, Lupin tells us: “With an incantation, which will work only if you are concentrating, with all your might, on a single, very happy memory.”   So…   Dementors feed on our happiness. And, if we allow them to, they will suck our very souls out of us.    Sounds a lot like depression, eh? Indeed it does.   Fighting dementors requires magic that even many qualified wizards have difficulty with. Alas, so it is with depression.   The charm? We must concentrate WITH ALL OUR MIGHT on a single, very happy memory. Yep. That does the trick with depression as well. We know that the mind can’t simultaneously hold both the depressed and happy thoughts. But we must be fierce in our resolve and concentrate WITH ALL OUR MIGHT if we want to win the battle when the dementors glide into our daily lives.   Eating, moving and sleeping well help, too. So does training your ability to focus WITH ALL YOUR MIGHT via a meditation practice. Oh. And deep breathing helps as well — flips the old switch from the fight-or-flight response (which dementors love) to a relaxation response (which they don’t like so much).   Back to Harry. The specific incantation we powerfully speak as we focus on that happy memory? “EXPECTO PATRONUM!!!”   Which reveals another key facet to fighting the dementors: We must expect that our efforts will work.   All that leads to a wonderful creature flowing out of your wand and standing between you and the dementor. As Lupin says, it’s different for each of us. For Harry it was a stag. For Hermione it was an otter. What’s yours? (Mine’s a lion.)   Today’s +1. Got any dementors gliding around in your life?    Focus WITH ALL YOUR MIGHT on what’s awesome in your life. KNOW that you can protect yourself from them.    “EXPECTO PATRONUM!!!”   P.S. If you have a bad encounter with a dementor, Rowling tells us that the best way to recover is to eat some chocolate. (Hah! Science agrees that chocolate does boost our mood but let’s just make sure we limit it to 1 ounce per day and make sure it’s 80%+ dark chocolate. Too much sugar DOES NOT help the cause.)   P.P.S. Remember the epic stag Harry created to fight off the 100+ dementors near the end of The Prisoner of Azkaban? Hermione couldn’t believe he could do that. Even HARRY couldn’t believe it. But… Because of Hermione’s handy dandy time turner, Harry had actually ALREADY SEEN himself do it.    As he said in disbelief: “I knew I could do it this time, because I’d already done it ... Does that make sense?”   Which reveals yet another scientifically-proven piece of wisdom. Recalling prior success is one of the fastest ways to boost your self-efficacy in the moment.    So…    Let’s add that to the mix. Focus WITH ALL YOUR MIGHT on what’s awesome in your life. KNOW that you can protect yourself from them. Recall a time in the past when you successfully faced down your biggest challenges and give me a big ol’ “EXPECTO PATRONUM!!!”   Nicely done! What a beatiful Patronus!
