After months of corresponding with Cody and Cassy Coots, Abe decides to make a studio album for them. It's to feature serpent-handling songs that have been sung in Cody's church for generations. Abe enlists the help of host Ferrill Gibbs to record it, who travels from Houston to meet up with Abe in Birmingham, Alabama. Together, they make a beeline for Middlesboro, Kentucky, in Abe's white touring van. Once in Middlesboro, the two convert Cody's great-grandfather's church – Full Gospel Tabernacle in Jesus Name – into a recording studio. With a six-foot rattlesnake lounging nearby (named "Ol' Lemonhead"), Abe, Ferrill and the Coots make a fully-produced, multi-track, multi-instrumental studio album called "The Coots Duo." The rough tracks being a post-production process in Nashville, Tennessee. Ferrill tracks down Dennis Covington, author of Salvation on Sand Mountain, only to discover that Mr. Covington suffers from a condition brought about by his own quest for faith, detailed in a 2014 autobiography, "Revelation." Ferrill pre-interviews Covington, scheduling a day for Abe to interview the author in Lubbock, Texas. Meanwhile, Abe beelines to the bedside of Billy Summerford, preacher of Old Rockhouse Holiness Church, who is dying of cancer. At Billy's bedside, Abe re-encounters Greg Coots, Cody's Grandfather. Abe tells Greg about an album he's been searching for, a recording of Greg's parents, the founders of Full Gospel Tabernacle in Jesus Name. We live in a culture of “love” where true love is non existent. We cannot pick and choose the word of God- either we abide in Him fully or we will be as the branch that is cast into the fire. So many have been hurt by those that were supposed to be the hands and feet of Jesus. So what do we do? He commands us to love one another as He loves us, and He tells us that in order to love Him we must keep His commandments. Join me as we walk through some tough questions and topics that go in line with scripture, but are controversial in our culture today. We will be reading the following: John 15:1-8, 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, John 13:3-17, John 13:34,35, John 14:15-17, and John 21:15-19. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Al Green is often referred to as ‘The Last of the Great Soul Singers'. In the 1970s the masterpieces he released, like ‘Let's stay together' and ‘Tired of being alone', were in part due to record producer and vocal mentor Willie Mitchell, who signed him to his label Hi Records. Mitchell's influence stretches from the Rolling Stones, Talking Heads, Wu-Tang Clan, to Kanye West. Back then, Green enjoyed seven consecutive million-seller hits. But slap-bang in the middle of his success, he was ‘born again', brought on after his girlfriend, Mary Woodson White, poured a load of grits (boiled cornmeal) over him, causing severe burns before committing suicide. She was furious he wouldn't marry her despite the fact that she was already married. By '76, Green had become a Reverend, and in '78, when his commercial success faded, he started recording Gospel music for which he won eight Grammys over a period of a decade. In 1988, he returned to his soul roots and alongside Annie Lennox, recorded ‘Put a little love in your heart'. A year later he released ‘The message is Love' with Arthur Baker. By the time I met Reverend Al Green at the Full Gospel Tabernacle in '93 for an MTV News at Night special on Memphis, he had released the widely underrated album, ‘Don't Look Back', which featured the song ‘Love is a beautiful thing'. He played and sang for us. That particular song starts with the words ‘This is what I believe' and towards the end references his greatest hits. When I asked him about his own influences, he cited Elvis Presley. He told me that Elvis was the forerunner, not only for him but for all others of his era. Green had bought all Elvis's music and told me that he had met him in the urinal of a Beale Street club in Memphis, where they instantly bonded. Later, in an often repeated quote, he has said he would have shaken Elvis's hand but it just didn't seem appropriate at the time! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Do you struggle with bitterness at the current circumstances you are in the midst of? Or have you felt as though the Lord isn't in the middle of your storm? We often box ourselves up from God and keep Him in a closed perception of who we think He is. We must allow God to be God in our lives so that His Holy Spirit can flow through us. Our reading today will be in John 15:1-11, and Ephesians 3:17-21. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Episode 5 is here and she is deadly! Because this week, we will be discussing deadly animals kept as pets. Jackie tells the story of snake-handler Jamie Coots, who didn't necessarily keep his snakes as "pets" but used them for religious purposes in his church the Full Gospel Tabernacle in Jesus Name. Although Coots gained notoriety for his show "Snake Salvation" on National Geographic, his snake-handling practices had deadly consequences.
